Harry Potter and the Whims of Fate (Harry Potter Quest)

[X] You know magic. Use it to intervene and assist Sirius. Even though you are a novice, you have a wand and remain clad in your invisibility cloak.
-[X] Stay under the Cloak and start dropping/flinging whatever physical objects you can use (heavy or sharp) at the initial attackers to distract them (if available, shooting gum at their eyes/mouth with Waddiwasi is a fine distraction as well), preferably from behind cover to avoid getting hit by accident.

Skirmish at Rue du Soleil
Harry forced his hands to stop shaking and took a deep calming breath.

I know magic. I can help. I will help.

His fist tightened around his wand. Even though he was a novice, Harry had to do something. Underneath his invisibility cloak, his eyes cast from side to side over the street, while he feverishly raked his brain for a spell he could use to help Sirius. It felt like his mind was slogging through mud as he tried thinking through all the spells he did know. Diffindo? He could never make it go far and it lacked power. Tripping Jinx? Too unreliable, no guarantee it'd distract them. Expelliarmus? No, he'd just started learning that and could barely cast it. This was not a time for mistakes...

Waddiwasi! He recalled how Uncle Remus had once used it before to precisely shoot a piece of gum onto his eyebrow. While Harry's mastery of the spell was nowhere as good, all it'd take was one good hit in the eye or mouth to give the distraction Sirius needs!

Staying under his invisibility cloak, he cast his eyes across the street in search of ammunition. Spotting a piece of gum spackled to the street, a determined grin cut across his features, and he quickly pointed his wand at it.

"Waddiwasi!" Harry said, and his voice was swallowed up by the roar of crowd.

Quickly pointing his wand at one of the assailants afterwards, he watched as the projectile gum quickly sailed through the air towards the man.

Only to narrowly miss him.

'Damn it!'

Wasting no time, Harry quickly sought another piece of gum from the sidewalk and promptly fired it off with the same practiced motion.

Only to hit an assailant in the chest, to no visible effect. The enemy didn't even seem to notice as he whirled about.

Just as he was about to fire off his third piece of gum at the bespelled Ignius, there was a sudden flash of blue light and he saw Sirius down on one knee; he must've been hit! Please be alright!

Before any of his three opponents could capitalise on the weakness, he took a quick roll forward and was back on his feet, a blue shield shimmering around him, blocking the quick attempts at follow-up spells.

Dread filling his stomach, Harry changed tact and quickly directed a bottle cap at the attacker, which went sailing straight at the hooded head. 'It's going to hit!' he thought triumphantly.

The bottle cap smashed against the closest enemy directly on the forehead, surprising him, and he quickly looked about, looking for the one responsible. Only to leap backwards and raise a shield as 3 bright flashes of light passed him by, courtesy of Sirius.

The gambit seemed to have cost Sirius; leaving him little time to form a shield as the ground in front of him suddenly exploded, knocking him back several steps and forcibly dispelling the half-formed shield.

The explosion finally shocked the street into action - high pitched screams suddenly rose as people started trying to force their way from the fight, but in doing so only caused more confusion, as one group made for the apparition points and the other deeper into the Rue du Soleil.

With rising desperation, Harry cast about now in search of something bigger to use. Within moments, he spotted it - one of the panicking bystanders held a red glass bottle haphazardly in his grasp.

Acting on instinct, the young Potter quickly cast the spell and sent it lazily hurling towards one of the attackers.

The slow speed proved to be detrimental; the wizard noticed it coming from half-way and with a lazy flick of his wrist sent it off course. But, it served its purpose, as not a moment later a bright red flash of light engulfed the dark wizard and the man fell, hitting the pavement with a dull thud.

Harry's heart beat loudly as the wizard went down. For a long moment, he stared at the wizard. Stunned.

Before the young wizard could make another move, Ignius went down from one of Sirius' spells, and a sharp crack resounded through the street; the other assailant having turned tail and fled via the apparition point.

There was a terrible silence throughout the street, and Harry shook from head to toe. His breath came in gasps as if he'd run a mile.

In the next moment, Sirius appeared right next to where Harry stood, and placed a firm hand on his shoulder.

"It's alright, Harry," Sirius said quickly, relief was etched into every line of his handsome face, "Come on."

Feeling like a marionette, Harry followed the older him towards the Apparition point. Next thing he knew, he felt Sirius' hand on his shoulder forcibly twisting away, everything went black and he was pressed hard from all sides; he could not breathe, there were iron bands tightening around his chest; his eyeballs were being forced back into his head; his ear-drums were being pushed deeper into his skull, before he suddenly found himself standing in their Hotel's apparition point.

I hate Apparition!

By the time Harry had regained his bearing, Sirius was already engaged in a conversation with James through the two-way mirrors they used. Harry tried to make out what they were saying, but their words seemed oddly distorted.

Before Harry could even get a word out, Sirius grabbed his arm, depositing a small box into it.

"There's a Portkey in there that will take you back to England. Your father will be waiting for you there." Sirius barked out in a voice that brooked no arguments.

"What about you?" Harry asked.

"Don't worry about me, I've got to take care of this fiasco," Sirius said, and a familiar roguish grin split across his face, "I'll see you soon."

With a reluctant nod, Harry promptly took out the portkey. As soon as his fingers touched the old wristwatch in the box, he could feel the room suddenly start spinning; faster and faster until he felt just about ready to hurl; the colours blurred into one and just as he was about to throw up he found himself kissing an unfamiliar floor. His father rushed forward to grab a hold of him.

I hate Portkeys!

Things of note that happened in the interim:
  • After much prodding and poking, Harry is able to find out that the men who attacked Sirius in France had ties to Bellatrix Lestrange, the wanted Death Eater. Ignius is found to have been under the Imperius of the wizard they captured.
  • Neville tells a tale of his exploration of Apophis' tomb in Egypt, of how he escaped a mummy.
  • Harry begins a cordial correspondence with Marie. Every month or so they exchange letters via owls. She writes of the beautiful Beauxbatons, and Harry's longing to go to a real magical school intensifies.
  • Half a year after the incident in France Harry is taken by James to see Uncle Sirius in St. Mungos. The older man is missing his left hand and half his ear. After some questions, Harry finds out that Sirius was chasing Bellatrix Lestrange in Eastern Europe. He found her, or rather she found him, and they had duelled. Sirius lost the duel, badly, but managed to escape with his life.
  • In 1994 Harry and Neville are finally able to convince their parents to let them attend Hogwarts alongside their sister, Becky. (Start in 4th Year of Hogwarts)

Area of particular interest for Harry over the next three years: (Pick three and use spoilered plan format. You may pick an option more than once for your plan.) Note: This is in addition to Harry's normal studies and activities.

After seeing Sirius duel, and realising how utterly useless he himself was during the fiasco, Harry has taken to avidly practicing his dueling technique. To aid him in this, he has also looked into the Dark Arts, for knowing them means knowing how to counter them.

This experience just showed how badly harry needs to be able to duel effectively. Dark arts let's him know what spells Dak wizards might use. Mind arts are so no one reads our minds. We're not going half ass it like Canon!Harry. especially since Snape won't be our teacher.

Let's get ready for the Triwizard.

Everybody in HP that practices dark arts are literally insane or have the biggest of all sticks up their ass. ALCHEMY WHERE IS MY ALCHEMY. Dumbles is good for nothing but being a manipulative inheritance stealing dick.

I don't have a huge interest in Dark Arts, personally I prefer the Albus Dumbledore school of dueling where you do a bit more than fire jets of light at the other, hence an interest in Dueling and a more obscure art.

As a heads up:

Choices picked here will have an effect upon the next vote, which will decide Harry's stats/skills as he goes to Hogwarts, which will be rather important, as you won't get such a lump sum increase in them for a while. The XP expenditure will also be handled differently for this instance, in the interest of making it easier to follow and lend your voice towards the build you'd like to see. Beyond that we'll use regular XP expenditure system.

Also, you can expect more regular updates from now on.

She's Bellatrix, isn't she? Goddamnit.

Reasoning: Yeah, no thanks to the Dark Arts. I have no interest in having Harry wear eye-shadow while reciting dreadful poetry.

Nope, she's the hoe that gonna introduce her the fleur.

Wait, are you suggesting an almost slavish devotion to increasing personal power isn't the path to success in the HP world?!

C'mon son.

Grindelwald had like 60 years of solid success. Voldemort did too. And Albus started out that way and he got to a 150 years old and was Headmaster of the best wizarding school in the world. If Harry Potter teaches us anything its that lavish devotion to personal power results in a lifetime of being a badass motherfucker before someone kicks your shit in.

Which might be worth it.

It's just not the route I want Harry to take.

This is in addition to the normal amounts of time he already spends with friends and family. This is what he goes above and beyond to spend time on, sure you can pick more time with friends and family but it's nonsense to imply that not choosing them here would mean Harry is in any way anti-social.

Social!Harry because screw having yet another quest where all the training all the time!

Rowling underplayed it in the books, but being a star in the only sport in the Wizarding world should be a huge social boost. Just look at Krum or any real world sports star.

Spend time with friends for the obvious social boost.

Mind arts are op and passive legilimency is stupid OP.
