You guys seem to be talking past each other. You might not have any sexism but there is definitely a general feeling amongst the public that a dumb, ignorant guy is more respected than the same attributes in a woman.

Personally I didn't really have an issue with Mantis, as mentioned she grew up in isolation with only Ego to really talk to...but I do know that some people are going to take her the wrong way.

I didn't have any issue with Mantis either, she's just socially awkward after living in isolation with only Ego to talk to.

Mantis was definitely the weakest part of the film--there's a lot of uncomfortable proximity between her character and stereotypes of Asian women, and she kind of sticks out as a bit one dimensional next to Gamora and Nebula.

I didn't see any stereotypes and I don't think she was the weakest part of the film, the weakest part was probably the Sovereign People and even than, not much of a weakness as the film overall was very good.

Well, I mean, there's a line between "this character is socially awkward" and "this character is stupid" and some of the jokes with her move to the latter end, which is kind of a sexist thing what with her being a childlike woman with a breathy voice and all. It's a similar issue with Drax in the first movie, but those implications aren't there for a man.

I dunno. The thing with Mantis was while she was socially awkward, she was also both funny and useful. Drax in the first movie jobbed a lot, while Mantis, despite being a kind of bad at social situations basically saved the whole crew twice over. Also, the film must gain a bit of credit for the fact that Gamora and Nebula have a way more active role this time, and they managed to make Gamora's straight woman thing work, which I was very impressed by.

Like, usually, the straight woman or man is the least funny of everyone, but because the rest of the team can be so annoying and goofy, I felt that Gamora almost became an audience surogate for the annoyance at having to deal with Rocket, Quill and Drax.

I would like the Guardians to get a snarky, Buffy the Vampire slayer type for their next outing, if there is one, maybe Nebula once she's recovered a bit.

Just because you don't see any stereotypes doesn't mean there aren't any. She definitely hits many of the "demure deferential submissive soft-spoken and a bit dumb/naive" Asian woman stereotype.

She feels the weakest of the main Guardians, but part of comes from only having only 1 film to get character development. Even then I felt that second-in-command Ravager had more dimensions to his character.

I don't know, but I'm not taking any risks.
But he said he was alone, and that Peter finally meant he had someone else like him. If he believed he was a Celestial wouldn't he try to socialize with them, or at least mention meeting them instead of saying he was one of a kind?
His name is literally Ego, his entire motivation is that nothing in existence measures up to his standards so he is going to replace it all with himself. He probably thinks the same of any of the other Celestials

Honestly my biggest issue with the film was Drax essentially doing nothing but dragging jokes out way past the point of them being funny. I don't know where this started but it seems that now the standard humor writing is to have a long set up, a punchline, then repeat the punchline like four times. Each time dragging out the punchline until you are certain even someone hopped up on N2O would no longer be laughing.

Just saw this with my brother and one of his friends, and we loved it! :D

I teared up when all the other Ravager captains showed up to see Yondu off

So fun!
Mary Poppins, yall!
Tazer Face!
Shufflecat!
I think I liked it even more than the original. Good times :D

Saw this with some friends today, I wasn't overly blown away by it but it was fun. I think it tries too hard to be funny in a couple of places and then Drax drags out the punchline longer than needed, but it's still a fun way to pass an hour and a half.

Mary Poppins is a pretty cool guy. Eh kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything.

Well I just got back from watching it and had a good time. The thing that I remember the most was the first trailer that came on before the movie started was the one for Aliens Covenant. The mood whiplash was real. I was thinking until the Marvel trailers came up that I might have been in the wrong theatre. wonder if I watched that movie I would get the Guardians' trailer before watching it.
