You can't help but smile as Shinji's eyes light up at the colorful clearly labeled box in your hand.
"I-is it really?" "Yep, all yours, you'll have to put it together though, it's a model!"
You hand it to him and he hugs it to his chest "Can you help me with it?"
"When I have time son. You know how my job is-"
"Really important" he finishes but smiles at you nonetheless.

Outside the Reiquarium
"What do you mean by 'bodies survived'?" You ask wearily clutching Rei to your chest.
"The details are still foggy but it would seem we've failed to prevent one of your predictions." He says grimly.
"Any word from Dr Fubuki?" You ask panic rising.
"No, not yet."
"Dammit!" You cuss a bit too loudly as Rei begins to stir in your arms and you suddenly feel the hairs stand up on your arms and back of your neck in a way that can't be natural.
You begin frantically rocking her as gently as possible and making light shushes until she seamed to calm down. You then walk her over to a table and gently before picking the phone back up.
"-Endo? Gendo!" He calls through as the signal gradually clears back up clearly just as affected by whatever Rei seemed to do.
"Sorry, I got caught up with Rei."
"Rei? Ah right! Today was her 'due date'. Still what are we to do about the current situation?"

You hung up and went back to pick up Rei.

Interlude 2: Fubuki's lament
Dr Mukuro Fubuki was many things. A loving mother, a capable scientist and a respectably skilled cook if she did say so herself.
She was also currently sitting ramrod straight in her plane seat awaiting her return to Japan after being recalled from Germany.
Because of her failure.

In the middle of the night before the planned 02 contact experiment. Only two people were there, Fubuki and Kyoko Soryu who she had held back to talk about something privately.
"Alright what is it?" Kyoko asked impatiently blowing a strand of her own red hair out of her face.
"Kyoko you can't go through with the experiment!"
She scoffed "Fubuki we have literally everything taken care of, with the safety precautions we set up-"
"They won't work fully!" Fubuki declared in a panic before quickly explaining everything she knew.
Kyoko gave her a flat stare "Do you really think I'm that stupid?"
"Huh?"
Her look changed to a glare "I know what this is about. All our careers you've been the successful one. The desired one. The one who got married and had a kid first and them that kid turned out to be a prodigy! Now that I'm in center stage you're the jealous one! Well geuss what? Your not scaring me away from my rightly deserved success!"
Before she knew it Kyoko had taken her out of the building and informed security not to allow her back in.

Fubuki stared at her hands in dejection. She'd been a fool, she hadn't had the nerve to go through what she couldn't think of as anything less than murder and had made a last ditch attempt to save her through warning.
She could have never even contemplated Kyoko would have such a deep seated hidden distain for her, she'd always considered them friendly rivals at best.
Soon enough the plane landed and as she got off she sent out a silent prayer.

To be completely fair this outcome isn't that unpredictable. Fubuki got a sensorsd and cut down version of the speech Fuyutsuki got because we don't know enough about her life in any canon to convince her that we're actually a extradimensional posseser and not just Gendo gone insane.
Because of this and her pre established relationship to Kyoko it wasn't absurd that she took the actions she did given what she knew.
I'm not insulting any of my wonderful players or insinuating that anyone should have seen this coming, just pointing out that it was possible and thus not all the blame can be put on her.

There's practically zero info on her in canon. There was absolutely no way to make an informed decision especially when the players had no idea she even knew Kyoko from before.
No it was clearly established they knew eachother and from Fubuki's perspective had a good relationship.

But if she's based on Kyoko's unnamed rival aka the one who stole her husband how could she possibly think she and Kyoko had a good relationship? In the manga the woman who was her rival stole her husband prior to the accident. In the anime it was implied they had an affair right around the time of the accident. Unless she's a total idiot there's no way she could conceivably think Kyoko would listen to her.
Tbf, in character we might not remember everything or have thought to investigate the relationship deeper, and it does seem like an obscure fact in all continuities so it makes sense we made a mistake.

"I won't make excuses, I failed. My misreading of Kyoko's and my relationship and own doubts about the plan caused this tragedy and I take full responsibility." She declared standing ramrod straight her voice dead serious but her eyes barley held back tears of grief.
"It was my own fault too, I should Hava acounted fir this." You declare as you truly feel you should have as unreasonable as some might say it would be...
You shake your head, you might be in his body but your not truly Gendo. You aren't that schemer from canon and lack much of the knowledge he had that the show never explained.

You nodd "Correct, Asuka Langley Soryu will be chosen to be a Eva pilot with the proceeding of events. We need to keep and eye on her and ensure the girls psychological well-being while awaiting and well after her mother's aprochining end."
The others nod grimly and you take a moment to consider your options.
Someone will need to head out to Germany to keep a close eye on things. The question was who?
Fuyutsuki was out. Besides filling in for you in certain management minutia you'd yet to fully grasp and already had his own observation work in the university.
You could do what you were originally considering for the Sabotage plot. Their trustworthiness would be a totall coin flip but it would keep all of your current inner circle out of immediate suspicions way.
You could also send Fubuki back in, she's clearly itching at any sort of chance for redemption.
Or you could handle It yourself, play it off as dedication to figure out what happened to your wife and what not along with your power over NERV overall...

A day later you have the official formally assigned and their first official report back to you just came in.
Kyoko is already confiined to the hospital and the therapist has done what they can giving little Asuka a shoulder to cry on.
Now for the next part. You pull out your phone and dilemma up the number you dug up for Mr Langley.
"Hello?"
"Is this Mr Langley? Dr Soryu's husband?"
"Yes, who is this?"
"My name is commander Gendo Ikari, I recently received the news about what happened to your wife and I wish to give my condolences."
"Oh! Umm, thank you."
"I lost my own wife Yui in an experiment similar to the one Dr Soryu was conducting and was left with my son who is actually about the same age as your daughter. When I heard what happened I decided to call and say that you would be wise to remember your child. Even if you find yourself busy with recent developments keep. Her. In. Mind." You finish solemnly as the voice on the other line goes quiet for a time.
"Uh, alright sir, I'll remember that."
With that you hang up.

In the crude makeshift nursery in NERV'S depths You and your inner circle are assembled to run a few diagnostics apon Rei.
You awkwardly try to keep her attention on a soft plush toy you wave in front on her face while Fubuki runs diagnostics on her with some machines and Fuyutsuki takes down notes of her results.
She simply gives you a bored look.
"Alright that's about it." Fubuki declares as she finishes up and you hand the toy to Rei who simply holds it and looks at it with a dull curiosity that your certain does not belong on a baby.
"What can you say?"
Fuyutsuki read off what he took down "Her A.T field has formed far stronger than any recorded from a human being in terms of it's ability to influence the physical world. This was predicted but she far surpasses initially expected parameters thanks to the alterations made to her in development."
"Sooo, what is the long term plan for the kid?" Fubuki asked.
You nod "True, given her nature there will certainly be difficulties in bringing her up."
"I will help but I refuse to be the one in charge of her, I'm too old to start playing parent now." Fuyutsuki states.
"Hmmm."

She's just at the line where she's stable and not completely dangerous. Fun fact! Had her human to Angel DNA balance been altered any further to the angel she would have come out with multiple eyes, wings and killed you as soon as those eyes opened in a bad end!

EDIT: @KingMe bit off topic but how complete are the EVAS? Can modifications to their armor and equipment still be made? Was thinking of things like arm mounted pile bunkers for core cracking and the like.

They're base designes from canon are already done (the soul suckining is the final step) but that doesn't mean they can't be upgraded!
