    Time passes by. With your current resources you keep decent security and maintain the Eva's and facilities as a whole enough to keep them working while Fubuki continues the artificial ensoulment project.

    The planning and design faze for the MAGI continues to progress smoothly and in time and Naoko it seems has all but forgotten her attempted advances and is throwing herself into her work...perhaps a little too much.

    You bring it up during the next update meeting for project MAGI.

    "I'm fine sir"

    "Dr Akagi you've been sleeping in your office more and more and pulling too many overnighters. Your colleagues are becoming concerned. Your current project is still only in the planning and design stage. You can afford to take a break."

    "With all due respect Ikari you and the others are worrying about nothing. Besides what would I even do with time off?"

    "When was the last time you spent time with your daughter?"

    "Ritsuko has her studies to worry about." She said crossing her arms and you raise your eyebrow

    "And you don't need to pull her away from them to spend time together, I've been encouraging Shinji to improve his grades but that doesn't stop me from making time to visit him"

    "I really don't think our situations are comparable, Shinji is a literal child and Ritsuko will be in college next year."

    "And how much time before that have you spent with her?"

    Naoko goes silent.

    "Ritsuko is a smart girl like me, she can take care of herself."

    "Who are you trying to convince of that?"


    By next Monday Naoko took a week long sabbatical and came back rather refreshed.

    On the Shinji front you had indeed been encouraging him to push himself in his studies and with some help from his Tutor that had actually shown a marked improvement.

    On the socializing front there was a uphill battle. Even without as many issues as canon he was still naturally something of a introverted child and getting him to try to make freinds with his classmates wasn't easy.

    Still with work he'd managed a few which he was happy to talk to you about on your visits.

    "-and Hinata doesn't really like reading much but he's the best at math class and Taichi is really nice but he doesn't like listening to the teacher at all-"

    Even if it means sitting through the barley strung together sentences of a kid his age talking when excited.


    Soon enough the year was coming to it's end.

    You sit in your office getting through the last of the years paperwork with some help from Fuyutsuki.

    He finished and let out a sigh "Even with Fubuki it looks like we were correct about the artificial ensoulment projects time requirements."

    "Indeed, still I like to think we've long since made whatever peace we can with what will have to happen now."

    He nods

    "Now let's try to take a break from the negative. Do you have any plans for new years?"

    "No not really, I haven't found the time to celebrate it properly in a awhile."

    "Well I'll be taking Shinji out for the occasion. Care to join us?"

    He looks down and contemplates for a time before looking up with a sigh "Very well, not as though it coukd truly hurt I suppose..."

    "That's the spirit!"

    He rolls his eyes and the two of you lock up the office before heading out

    And with that we're out for now! I'll be releasing a interim peice for the transition time period before we move to Evangelion year 2005

    • Hopefully the research will bare fruit in time. Even if it doesn't we can use it for Rei's EVA so we don't have to split her soul in half.

    Might be a good idea to partner more with the military, see what we can get going. Artificial AT field degradation or penetration would be a godsend in terms of minimizing damage to Tokyo-3 and not making the military feel useless; we already know it's possible to replicate the Lance of Longinus, so who knows what else could be done with the technology.
     
    Interlude 1: Fuyutsuki's new years with the Ikari's

    • Doctor Kozo Fuyutsuki let out a light sigh as he made his way to where he said he'd meet up with the man inhabiting Gendo Ikari's body.

    He had no idea what he was thinking when he said yes. It was already uncomfortable working with somone who'd apparently had a third person omniscient perspective into parts of his life but he'd been able to pull through those feelings just enough to work with him for the greater good but that had been all.

    He looked up and saw the setting sun and shook his head to clear away those thoughts.

    "I got myself into this, the least I can do is commit." He muttered under his breath as he eventually came upon the car his conspirator was waiting outside.

    The man gave a smile and seemed to be in a good mood as he smiled and invited Kozo into his car.

    The two drove for a bit before eventually stopping outside a house that had Shinji and another man waiting out front.

    The Not!Gendo waved the boy in and once he was seated and buckled he was introduced to him as a colleague of his father's work.

    The car drove and the boy started peppering him with questions of their work which he gave as careful answers to until...

    "Did you know my mother?"

    "Y-yes, I worked with her just as I worked with your father and even before then I actually taught at the college she attended " He allowed himself a small smile as he let the nostalgia wash over him

    "What was she like back then?"

    "Even then she was a truly brilliant and driven young woman who wanted to make this world a better place"

    "Why did you stop teaching?"

    "The second impact hit and the world briefly went to complete chaos and I felt my skills were better suited helping people as a doctor in a time when there was a desperate need for medical professionals."

    It continued like that for a while. Question and answer until eventually the car came to their destination and they briefly paid respect at shrine before heading to see a fireworks show, the sun had finally gone down fully and they looked magnificent.

    Still he found himself more interested in the lit up face of the younger Ikari as he watched the show in awe.

    He thought of the love he never acted on's sacrifice and how in another time and another place he'd joined with the true Gendo to try and invalidate that Sacrifice to bring her back.

    By the shows end he watched Not!Gendo's back as he walked in front of him and carried a now very sleepy small boy.

    Later that night when the boy would give him a tired wave goodbye as he was carried inside he woukd wave back with a steeled resolve the boy was not yet capable of understanding he'd caused.

    • You stood before the Reiquarium once again. It had finally received a minor upgrade in space to contain properly it's growing inhabitants.

    Looking at then now they almost resemble fully grown babies. Rei's incubation is almost complete.

    "I'm still a bit uncertain of this plan..."

    "It's simple, you return to working as a professor part time at the college Misato Katsuragi, Ryoji Kaji and Ritsuko Akagi will attend and keep a eye on them and guide them in the right direction when possible."

    Fuyutsuki let out a sigh and seemed to resign himself to this fate.

    "Now on to more immediate business. We'll need to be very careful with how the sabotage of the Unit 02 contact experiment goes, neither of us can be there to oversee things go to plan without raising suspicion, there's already rumors about Gendo killing his own wife."

    "But we'll have to be careful about the saboteur we get being competent and professional enough to make it look like an accident and not leave any trace of our own involvement."

    You nod "Know anyone?"

    Fuyutsuki is silent for a time before finally stating "What about Dr Fubuki?"

    "I'm uncertain, from what I've interacted with her she truly doesn't seem the type..."

    "Ordinarily no. But if we bring her in to our little benevolent conspiracy she might just see things differently."

    "Are you certain?"

    "Yes. If we explain it to her in a way that ensures she understands this as a mercy killing for Dr Soryu and her daughters own goods more than anything else."

    It was risky. But another ally wouldn't be bad...

    What are we going to do about Rei btw? Are we going to accelerate her growth at some point so she's closer in age to the other pilots like in canon?

    Very well, we'll bring Fubuki into the fold and see if she can act as our saboteur. But how to explain it to her, I lack the intement knowledge on her I did on you to bring you in?"

    "Let me handle the initial details. I'll deal her in to the more basic conspiracies before stating you have found a means to know the side effects Dr Soryu's version of the contact experiment and the accociated side effects."

    You nod in agreement and leave the rest to him.

    Later

    You stand in a large but somewhat dark room at a long table with several officials from the government and military officials.

    "So do you understand?" One of them, a man at the head of the table asked.

    "If I understand correctly I shall be formally given the rank of commander as NERV as given special privileges in the aid of construction of Tokyo 3 alongside the government?"

    None of this was a surprise to you of course. SEELE had contacted you breifly earlier in the day to inform you of this as they pulled the strings to make it happen for the scenerio.

    "Now Commander, are there any particulars you'd like to implement in the planning of Tokyo 3?"

    A few days later

    You stood in a carefully selected un monitored room alongside Fuyutsuki and Fubuki.

    "So, do you really see no other way then 'mercy' killing Kyoko?"

    "At this point we're afraid not." Fuyutsuki said solemnly.

    She looked down for a long moment before turning her gaze to you

    "Fine, I'll fly out to Germany under false pretenses and interfere with the new safety features they put into Unit 02 so she'll be absorbed."

Hardline communication between the MAGI and all defenses/systems (this is to facilitate us adding a secret system to the MAGI where external communications are kept separate from any of the physical connections to the city and routed through a few cables to the MAGI system so we can easily stop cyber attacks by just cutting a few cables).

    The men around the table nod and after some further general plans are drafted up you head out.

    You walk out to your car and contemplate everything.

    It's a few days before Dr Fubuki flies out to Germany for the plan.

    It will be at least weeks before the first Rei is finally complete.

    And Fuyutsuki will be spending more time teaching and keeping an Eye on Misato, Ryoji and Ritsuko in the college.

    With this new free time between helping oversee construction you decid it will be best to spend what free time with Shinji.

    the votes were a tie between outdoors activities and schooling so this really came down to a coin flip

    At a restaurant

    The overall plan to bring Shinji out of his shell had gone rather well and as a reward for his recent improvements in grades you decided to take him out to a nice restaurant.

    "How's your work been?" He asks with genuin curiosity

    "It's been going as well as it can."

    "Ok..." he'd already talked his little head off about everything he could think of earlier and the two of you were left in a awkward silence until...

    "So, this dinner wasn't the only gift I got you for your improved performance in school" you said as you pulled out a small bag containing-"

    Reiquarium

    You stand waiting as the birthing process of the first Rei Ayanami as the incubation has finally reached completion.

    When it was finally done and you held her in your arms you can instantly see the results of your tampering.

    Her skin is paler and what in one world would have been blue had been replaced with a small puff of stark white hair and as she opens red eyes you can't help but remember the End of Evangelion film

    As you exit the chamber still holding Rei you suddenly receive a call from Fuyutsuki.

    "Ah, I didn't expect you to call so soon. How has your return to teaching been?"

    "No time for pleasantries I'm afraid, I just got word from the German division and something went wrong as Dr Soryu's body survived!"

    I mean that's unfortunate..but better a vegetable then a mentally unstable nut job that will traumatize her kid further by committing suicide in front of her …plus assuming her soul and mind made it into Unit 02 maybe at some point we can transfer it back into her body?

    Hopefully she's a vegetable this time around, yeah. I didn't notice the emphasis on 'body' in the update so that might mean she's brain dead like you said.

    I can think of one other possible scenario.
    We all think a person's soul gets sucked into the Eva.
    Whose to say that the Eva's soul (whatever passes for a soul in an EVA) can do the same in reverse, getting inside the person's body.
     
    Oh just wondering, was worried for a bit this was dead because you posted updates so rapidly before. Sorry to be a bother!
