0.51: Power Selection, Cont.
Since people can't agree on things to pursue, even after voting for three things at a time, have some grapeshot. You may vote to look at the sub-powers for up to three of them should you so desire, or explore even more options, or you can pick one/end power selection.

[X] Manipulate
-[X] Red
-[X] Sentient

Biokinesis, Telekinesis, and Thermokinesis in one package.

[x] Victory
-[x] Blue
--[x] White, Gold
-[x] Non-Sentient

Doesn't exist. What kind of a quest would that be, anyway?

[X] SCIENCE!
-[X] Silver
--[X] Gold, White, Blue
[X] Sentient

-[X] Learn
--[X] White Blue
---[X] Gold
---[X] Silver
---[X] Brown
--[X] Sentient

Pretty much the same thing.

You'd be able to dissect, replicate, and understand the sciences behind enchanted objects and/or gadgetry, so long as they work on some version of physics instead of just being an object remotely powered by an ability.

You'll also be able to learn about more mundane things by observing them.

[X] Evolution
--[X] White
---[X] Brown
---[X] Silver
---[X] Blue
--[X] Sentient

If you're hurt by something or a problem sufficiently distresses you, you will be able to become immune to or solve it within 20 hours.

Example: if you're punched, receiving an attack of equal or lesser kinetic force the next day wouldn't do any damage. A stronger one would, but then the day after that, that one wouldn't harm you either. If your mother contracted a fatal healing-resistant illness, you'd be able to make a device to cure her.

I do not recommend trying to "power-level" yourself via high amounts of emotional trauma.

[X] Patterns
-[X] White
--[X] Blue
--[X] Gold
-[X] Sentient

You will be able to impose order where there is none.

Example: If you have a broken glass but the break is smaller than the rest of it, that would be a break in the pattern and you could fix said glass. If there are three piles of four rocks and one pile of three rocks, you can create another rock to add to the last pile. Things like that.

Side-effects may include an obsession with symmetry.

-[x] Weather
--[x] Red
---[x] Silver, Gold, Orange.
--[x] Sentient

Silver and orange aren't necessary.

You will be able to create environmental effects over a large-to-gargantuan area which may or may not obey the laws of reality. You will have pretty good control over the effects, but not where within the storm those effects are generated.

Example: a storm which accelerates time around the areas where lightning strikes.

[X] null Nullify
-[X] White
--[X] Gold, Red
[X] Sentient

You will be able to temporarily remove many kinds of- *glances over script* waiiiit a second...

Didn't we already do this? "..." Yes, I see the different description, but it sounds remarkably similar to me. "..." Fine, fine, I'll say it anyway.

You will be able to temporarily remove many kinds of environmental effects from part or all of the area around you. These include, but are not limited to: gravity, time, light, heat, touch, smell, and distance. These effects will end after five minutes if you stay within range or thirty seconds if you do not.

You may vote to take a closer look at up to three things at once, but this time, please keep in mind that colors are important and vastly change the potential of a power. A green "Artifact" and a silver "Artifact", for example, are two completely different things.

Yes, the symmetry thing was a joke. Probably.

By the way, due to an exploit that I accidentally left lying around, you're going to be able to give the AI in charge of monitoring/controlling the area where people get powers an actual body. The AI is also known as "Sentinel" and will be able to follow you home if you do so.

Said body must be biological in nature; part of the exploit.

[] Don't give it a body.

On that delightful note, we never did name your sister. What's her name, anyway?

I like this power. lets get out of Character select we've been at it for 3 days real time now.

Keeheeheehee.

This would actually be a very interesting power in real use. Text-format strictly limits its use depending on GM fiat and description, though.

Unfortunately a little too random.

[X] Give it a body, that of...
-[X] Another twin. Now you get to be triplets!

[X] Celes

Since we missed the chance for nephrite and jadeite paired names, Celes will do.

[X] Keep playing!

Unvoted Brood ( ) for this other interesting power I think deserves some attention...even if I think it'd be more interesting if it was purple primary instead of white:

Yo dawg, I heard you like concepts...

[x] Perspective
-[x] White
--[x] Gold
-[x] Sentient

Conceptual boundaries are overplayed- let's mess with conceptual perspectives instead. Also, now smooshing someone's head with our fingers is a very real threat.

[x] Time
-[x] White
--[x] Gold, Blue
-[x] Sentient

C'mon, give us some ZA WARUDO goodness...

[x] Manifest the Sentinel as a Magical Girl.

In keeping with twin cliches, we're obviously the serious, analytical twin while our sister is the whimsical, intuitive twin. To complete the mirror image, we need to be heroic while she's villainous - and didn't Mom give us a lecture about the most annoying hero type to face...?

That's right - we obviously become a magical girl for 'srsbzns' reasons.

Beyond that, I don't think letting suggestions flow in forever will be conducive to this quest ever making it out of chargen, so we're probably looking at one or two more rounds of observation at most.

Time to start considering what powers already examined stand out.

Actually...could we manifest the Sentinel as a male twin?

Not sure about powers yet, at first glance learning/SCIENCE seems a bit lackluster, however it gains a lot more appeal when you consider that you are not only able to REPLICATE other superscience/magic items, but you actually UNDERSTAND the principles behind them, which means that you would be able to create synergistic effects that snowball into more and more powerful/complex devices the more you learn. (basically Dragon on steroids).

It also has the benefit of our stuff being usable by other people, should we so choose.

Manipulate is extremely powerful, but has far more limited growth than the others, considering that these are the most optimal powers it is likely that we would be the most powerful bio/pyro/telekinetic in the world (Amy/Behemoth/Jean Grey), the question is if that will be ENOUGH, after all, there are many other supers who presumably have powers on that level, and many of them have either A: more experience then us. or B: Powers that grow over time, making a powerful but dead-end ability more dangerous.

Nullify seems super exploitable, (one of the most powerful we have seen) since it is distance-limited but also able to affect distance (and we all know how that goes). however it is also really boring sounding, so I would prefer if we didn't choose that one.

Same goes for Evolution.

-[X]Repeat above query for different color combinations

We already got a bit of a misaka thing going with the little sister we just adopted/forcibly altered to suit our whims. may as well see if we can go further with it. (the repeating query is because 'duplicate' is likely to turn up some interesting results in other categories)

[x] Select Assimilation

If we assimilate something, does it consume that trait from where we assimilated it from? Like assimilate the hardness of a diamond, does the diamond still have the same hardness?

Anyway, here's an example of conceptual perspective manipulation in action.
Eh...it seems cool and it's strong (anyone you can affect is at your mercy), but it isn't all that interesting to read about. Better in visual media.

If we assimilate something, does it consume that trait from where we assimilated it from? Like assimilate the hardness of a diamond, does the diamond still have the same hardness?
The way Alivaril described that actual example was with the word "steal" so I'm thinking it's actually taking the concept.

[X] Celes

We've got a good selection now, but I think we could go for one more round.

[X] Keep looking.

I don't care what new powers we see, though.

I think I may have found the one I want, anyway:

Biokinesis, Telekinesis, and Thermokinesis in one package.

This one is quite something. It's OP, but not setting-breaking (I think). @Alivaril, can you elaborate on this one a bit? How good is each power? Are we talking 'lift mountains' level TK, and 'Panacea' grade biokinesis, and 'I just made a mini sun' level thermokinesis? Or is each individual power more modest?

No, it does not.

As a general rule, you won't find things like that in this setting. If a telekinetic is capable of lifting mountains, they almost certainly can't do things on a smaller scale.

Progenitor likes watching people use powers in new and interesting ways. Whether that's finding different applications for a fine-control power or avoiding collateral damage for a massive-scale power, he's still happy. Considering how bored he is with an "I Win." button, he doesn't want other people to have one.

Spotted this in the first two or three posts, but...on a scale from "yes" to "yes" how much influence has Worm had on your conception of superpowers, hm?

Absolutely none, actually. Me and one of my friends put this setting together several years ago. Splintered was inspired by the sentient powers from this setting, not the other way around.

QM note from the first post:

We'll see how this goes. I fully expect for nobody to bother with this quest.

Special thanks to Leanne for handing me her original notes on this setting after she burned out on it. Neither of us read Worm before we actually made it, so any similarities between the two are entirely coincidental. Except for the term "capes". I took that since it sounds better than what we had before.

Ironically, there's a major hero named "Dragon" in this. No, she is not a Tinker or any of the equivalents this world has.

The sentient powers in this setting inspired me to make Splintered, not the other way around.

Be aware that, in this world, there are a large number of heroes and villains who operate under Silver Age Rules or otherwise treat the whole thing as one giant game. A large portion of the public agrees. Schools for heroes are a thing.

EDIT: Oh, right. I'll do a post for common knowledge on famous US heroes later, but for those curious, Dragon's ability is Wealth Affinity.

No offense intended. :p

In any case, perspective manipulation doesn't really work with the medium, so changing vote:

For assimilation, does the effect become diluted with size? For example, if we stole hardness from a diamond and applied it to our fingernails, vs applying it to our whole body, would it have the same effect or less for the latter? Also, can we transfer properties, either directly or with ourselves as a middleman? I.e., could we transfer tastiness from bread to diamond or would we have to transfer tastiness to us first, or would we not be able to do that at all?

I imagine that sort of thing we would find out as we used it.
