Fractured Fantasy: A CK2 Style Final Fantasy quest

She basically got exactly what she wanted, but in a way that denied her the chance at revenge.

Considering it took her majority of XII to realize that the revenge would be pointless and would come at the cost of many Dalmascan lives... That might end up boiling over. It's one thing when a person themselves realizes something and chooses to let go of anything really. But it's a whole different can of worms if you're forced to let go of something or denied it. Not the healthiest thing to happen for sure.

I was thinking about something, maybe it's unimportant and silly, but if there's a pattern of FF PCs being transported at their lowest point, we could probably figure out what time in their own stories a significant number of them got transported. We already know some, we…might be able to guess others…I'm not sure if it'd be worth it though, especially considering at least one group of characters has significantly messed with the formula according to my own knowledge and there's probably others that I just don't know or remember because I didn't get into a full 3rd of the FFs.

Well, it's hard to say if it's always at their lowest point. It does seem to be early usually, but the VII crew for instance is later in the story. IX is at least far enough along Garnet knows about summons putting it somewhere in Disc 2 at the earliest. XIII is… XIII, so I mean a lot of madness there. It's fun for sure trying to piece together who knows what.

VII manages to be both ridiculously early (Pre Crisis Core) and ridiculously Late (Our cast mostly)
IV and XII didn't even start though. Likely neither did VI.

IV could have started, I think. Though it would be very early on, regardless.
Also, if the intro synopsises are anything to go by, then:
  • Celes is from early World of Ruin--maybe right after her attempted suicide. (Which would put her at odds with the rest of the VI cast we've learned about so far, but we already have Zack and Aerith from different time points...)
  • Lann is from the 80-90% mark of WoFF.
  • Aqua is from the postgame of Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep.
And Lostime seems to be from the 90% mark of Chocobo's Dungeon.

It's worth mentioning, that was the plan for Celes, if chosen as the player character. But she wasn't chosen. As much fun as it would be to have a time traveling Celes trying to backstab Kefka to prevent his ascension, that's not what's happening here.

… would be kinda rad though.

I apologize for taking so long with the next update. Life has made me pretty busy. One of our managers quit and I had to pick up the slack, we had a storm, lost power and internet for a while… just busy with stuff.

Also, does anyone else plan to put a Garnet Omake in the running? We're about halfway to the initial deadline I set, and like I said if no one plans to contend I can end it early, or if people are just having trouble writing I can extend it.

While I've had vague ideas for one, nothing has been coming together. It'd be a Negaverse thing, or close enough to one anyway, that I'm not sure it'd really fit for this. It wouldn't come together by the 18th anyway, and I'm doubtful it would come together by the 25th at that.
Edit: Basically, I'm not planning to contend at this point.

I'm personally quite satisfied with the chosen path the current omake suggests, so I add my vote to its pile by simply not weaving something together.

It's a lovely little story of Garnet and Steiner being very much themselves, all the way down to Garnet trying to navigate just existing as her own person with actual decisions to make, and I'm glad to have that as our future.

IV could have started, I think. Though it would be very early on, regardless.
Also, if the intro synopsises are anything to go by, then:

Based on Omakes which made it Canon Cecil and Kain didn't even make it to Mist since instead of being burned by Bomb Ring the village was attacked by Shinra.

Yeah I kinda figured that would be a preferential treatment for the Hero just to make sure they're have some footing and reason to work against their faction.

Ahhh, okay then. It would be pretty cool... *bins a document* ((My laptop corrupted the file anyway.))

Sorry to hear about all the chaos, and I hope things turn out well on your end.

Oh, right, I forgot about that. ^^;

Well, guess I can only say definitively that Lostime is at the 90% mark of Chocobo's Dungeon, then. FF8 might also be kinda far along, but it could very well be that they're time-displaced, too.

Well Seifer isn't the Sorceress Knight mentality so he comes from rather early on or at least before the Timber Fiasco. Not sure if Rinoa's Father Omake with Leo is Canon though since Rinoa being a Sorceress is a rather late game reveal.

They could easily have come from different times. It seems they showed up in different places.

"Let Alephan's wisdom guide you!" Agnea called out as she started to dance.

"What?" Setzer yelled over the rushing air.

"She's telling us to use magic!" Alfyn clarified as the shadows descended upon them.

Before anyone else could move, the Wyvern dove for Freya, claws outstretched. She tensed and managed to jump a moment before it would have crashed into her, leaving a deep wound in its shoulder as she passed. The wyvern skidded, talons scratching the deck as it struggled to get back in the air. You quickly cast Blizzard before it could take flight and tore a chunk out of its wings

Shadow lunged for one of the humanoid creatures, with bat-like wings and red-hued claws. Dipping under its guard, he landed a sharp blow near where its ribs should have been. Rather than blood, a cloud of black vapor emanated from the wound. "They're tougher than they look!"

Alfyn waited for his opponent to dive at him, then caught it with a perfectly timed Icicle. It reeled back, shaking itself to shed the ice clinging to its body.

As you fought, more and more of the monsters flew past, unable to keep up with the Blackjack's speed. Setzer was doing everything he could to evade them without knocking you off the ship. One particularly thick cloud of black smoke passed by and-

WHAM!

You wheezed and stumbled as something hard hit you right in the stomach. A few feet away Shadow did the same. What you thought was black smoke turned out to be another monster. Similar to a Bomb, it seemed to be at least 90% head by volume and floating without any visible means to do so, leering at you with glowing yellow eyes as it reoriented itself.

Shadow retreats to the Rearguard! Agnea takes his place!

The newly revealed bomb-like creature flew forward, chomping wildly at Shadow. The ninja, still off balance from the earlier attack, was too slow to dodge. Instead, Interceptor jumped between himself and his master, latching on the creature as he clawed it viciously.

Meanwhile, Freya crouched to jump again, but before she could take to the air, the Wyvern crashed into her, kicking her to the side with its clawed feet and leaving deep puncture wounds in her torso.

You summoned a shimmering barrier to deter the one attacking you, causing it to bounce off harmlessly. Once again you cast a spell towards the Wyvern, this time conjuring a stream of water to strike it. Water didn't sound like the deadliest tool, but the impact was heavy enough to knock it to the ground, briefly stunning it.

Another shard of ice came for Alfyn's flying beast, and this time it struck deeply. Rather than simply 'dying,' the creature burst open like a bag of flour, expelling a thick cloud of black mist that was swiftly torn away by the howling wind.

Shadow swiftly ended his opponent with a stab to its injured side, but not before it clawed him in the chest, leaving a trio of slash marks that bled freely.

"Let me help!" Agnea moved to the forefront, giving Shadow an opportunity to slip back out of the danger zone.

Agnea twirled on the spot, the wind rising into a sharp gale that sent the black bomb-like creature flying back as black ichor dripped from its body. The spell sent it careening towards Alfyn, who caught it in the back with a quick axe strike to finish it off.

Closer to the back of the Blackjack, Freya stilled herself, keeping a watchful eye on the Wyvern as it swooped around her. She waited for the moment it committed to the attack run, and braced her spear against the deck. It plowed headlong into the spearhead, exploding into a cloud before it could so much as touch Freya.

The final monster barreled right for you, chomping at the air, so you gave it a shard of ice to chew on. Some small part of you wonders for a moment if it needs to breathe or not, as it gnaws on the ice before crushing it into pieces.

The creature's eyes wander back and forth, suddenly aware that it's outnumbered and surrounded.

"Hold on, everyone!" The Blackjack suddenly veered to the right, dodging another cloud of shadowy bodies. With the warning, you were able to stay standing, but Angea wasn't so lucky. She was mid-step as the ship moved and tumbled to the deck.

"Agnea!"

Sensing an opportunity, the monster struck, floating forward and biting down on the dancer's leg. Agnea cried out in pain, but before it could take a second bite, Shadow lunged forward, planting a knife right between its eyes.

"Angea, are you alright?" You quickly run over and crouch by her side, joined a moment later by Alfyn, already rummaging around in his bag.

"It's not that bad, really, just a spill is all." Agnea ignored Alfyn's protests and stood up, wincing slightly as she tested her leg. The apothecary frowned and bit his lip, but didn't seem keen to press the issue while you were in danger. You knew for a fact the second you had a minute to rest, he would not let her go without a check.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your ever amazing captain speaking. We made it through the blockade!" Setzer adjusted the throttle, the Blackjack slowing from its breakneck pace to a slower, more reasonable speed.

You looked back towards the swarm, and it suddenly occurred to you how massive it was. Now that you were on the inside, it looked like the entire settlement was surrounded by a black dome. The hole you had punched through it, and the bigger one that Clan Centurio's ship had carved through, were slowly being restored as new creatures flowed in to replace the fallen.

Well… no getting off the ship you're on now.

Setzer found the ramshackle airship dock, and you pulled in for a landing.

[The party breaks through with only a single combat encounter!]
[All damage and MP loss will be restored in time for the Siege]

Traverse Town gave you a pretty cold welcome, though, considering the circumstances it was understandable. The entire population seemed stuck in a state of grim determination and every single person you saw was running an errand, patrolling, working on makeshift barricades or otherwise making themselves useful.

You pulled one of the patrols to the side to ask where Cid was, and they pointed you in the direction of the first District and said Cid was likely in the building facing the front gate. They explained it was the closest to an official meeting place in town.

"You better have good news for me, or I'm gonna #$%ing lose it," Cid growled at you, without looking up from the absolute mess that was the table in front of him. "I have been busy arguing and organizing, and getting all these pansies to get off their asses and fight. I haven't slept in a fucking day, and some genius tried to get me to drink coffee. I don't drink coffee! I drink GODDAMN TEA!"

"I brought you a bunch of professional monster hunters from Dalmasca, and a familiar face."

For a moment, Cid didn't respond. Then his head snapped up, the straw he was chewing on slipping from between his lips in sheer surprise. He stared blankly at you for a moment before turning to the dragoon at his side. "You see her too, right, Kain?"

"Yes, Sir."

"Don't call me sir." Cid snapped, almost automatically. He scooped up the piece of straw and put it back between his teeth. "Well, you're a sight for sore fucking eyes Aerith. I'd love to have a tearful re-uh, meeting. But we're kinda busy with shit right now. Have to put that on hold until we're not up to our eyes in Heartless."

"Heartless?"

"... Ah, fuck it. Kain, you're in charge till I come back."
Cid stood up, taking a moment to stretch. "If you start feeling loopy, pass it to Biggs or Wedge. I'm taking Aerith to see the crystal." The dragoon nodded as Cid led you out of the room.

"There's a lot to catch you up on, so I'll tell you the short version. The heartless are those creatures that keep attacking the town. They love the dark, light scares the piss out of them, and we have a crystal that constantly shines with the stuff. Some of them have that weird red stamp pattern on their chest, the others are jet black."

"Do you know where they come from, or why they're doing this?"

"No fucking idea where they come from. Our best guess for why is that they wanna smash the crystal because they're scared of it. It's hidden in the clock tower, has some kind of power to… save people, I suppose."

"What do you mean?"

"Everyone who landed here lost their home, one way or another. We think the crystal collects refugees, saves them from landing up somewhere even shittier. Not that this place is a resort…"

He slowed down as you reached the clock tower. "We've been thinking of putting defenses in place. Breaking the ladder and making some long twisting path to it, but when you're defending from things that can slink in shadows and fly…" He shook his head and showed you the ladder. "I'm taking a walk to clear my head. Tell me when you're done with the Crystal."

The closer you got to the crystal, the more you felt… focused, at peace. Like you were walking into a room that exuded tranquility. When you reached the top of the ladder and climbed into the crystal's chamber properly, its radiance almost blinded you.

The Holy Crystal. Its glow compelled you to walk forward, showing you images of peace and prosperity. You and your friends were gathered in a field of blooming flowers, not just AVALANCHE, but Zack, and even the Turks.

It occurred to you, if these were the younger Turks, perhaps they haven't done anything truly vile yet? You always felt some affection for the young Turks, Rude, Reno, even Tseng was a friend of Zack's. They hadn't dropped the plate yet, and with your intervention, maybe they never would.

Yes… You could make peace with everyone you realized. You could save everyone. AVALANCHE, Zack, the Turks, even Zack's mentor Angeal, even Seph-

You reeled back, slamming gracelessly into the wall of the tower as you retreated from the Crystal. It still held the same tranquil glow as before, but…

Suddenly, you wanted to be anywhere but here. You closed the latch and quickly climbed down from the tower, trying not to feel like you were running away.

When you made it to ground level, Cid was leaning against the clock tower, chewing the straw. "I recognize that look. Crystal tried to get you to embrace peace and harmony and shit? Send Shinra a peace treaty and see what happens?"

"Yeah, something like that." You said, feeling oddly unsettled.

"Well, let me tell you something you need to hear." He turned to you. "That crystal up there doesn't stand for 'goodness' or any shit like that. It stands for peace, stability, and Order. Maybe that sounds like a good thing when the world is twisted in fucking knots but…"

"The point is, you have every right to be angry, to want to change things. The only reason our little group came together is because Shinra has a talent for leaving a list of pissed off people a mile wide."

"Letting all that get to our heads is a bad thing, obviously. But forgiving Shinra for everything is it's own brand of fucking stupid. The world needs shaking up from time to time."

You turn that idea over in your head. You've seen what hate does to people. You were there when Barret had to put down his old friend Dyne like a rabid dog. You never wanted to hold that much hatred in your heart.

But that didn't mean your anger wasn't justified. Shinra pushed you around, kidnapped you, kept an eye on you for years and years, tricking… watching… controlling.

Maybe that meant you weren't a creature of order. Maybe you had that spark of chaos inside you. But that was okay. You'd take righteous anger over apathy any day.

Barret was a good example of that actually. He was angry because he cared, because he was compassionate. He saw harm being done and wanted to put a stop to it, for the sake of everyone. Righteous fury. You may not always be able to temper it into that righteous anger, but that's what you should strive for.

"… you clear your head?"

"Yeah. Thanks Cid. You're pretty wise for a crotchety old man." You tease.

The pilot barked a laugh, "And you're pretty sharp-tongued for a little flower girl." Despite getting him to crack a smile, it doesn't last long. When Cid looks up at the clocktower, his expression immediately dips into a scowl. "We're running out of time. We gotta get back to the 1st district and get ready for their attack. I assume you plan on chipping in?"

"Of course!"

"Alright then. Let's go, I'll introduce you to everyone..."

[To Be Continued]

Sorry it took me so long, life's been busy, fellas. I expected the heartless to be rough, but you are very lucky that Shadow didn't get knocked down by the Darkball+Air Soldier, and lucky that the Darkball aimed it's final charge against Angea instead of Aerith. Shout-out to the QP from Magewyrm and Shogeton, meaning you only needed to fight a single wave of Heartless. I was looking forward to an entrance battle, but considering how brutal this particular dustup went... probably a good thing it only took one.

I am working on the rules for the Siege itself, they're a bit of an experiment, so we'll see how it goes. I'm also working on sheets for the characters you're going to meet, because there are a lot. As a little sample to tide you over, I've already rolled the results for Clan Centurio. You got Montblanc (Moogle Black Mage) Krjn (Viera Red Mage) a Bangaa Monk and a Viera Fencer. Not shabby at all! You got 2 of the founders, and both of them are mages!

Eugh, we're really feeling our lack of a proper tank.

On another note, can we swap out our Poison Materia for one of our Level 2 ones? We'll probably get more out of fire or lightning than poison against Heartless, and our Level 2 Materias have better spells to.

"Well, you're a sight for sore fucking eyes Aerith. I'd love to have a tearful re-uh, meeting. But we're kinda busy with shit right now. Have to put that on hold until we're not up to our eyes in Heartless."
Kek. Makes sense Cid is no longer terribly fond of the word, "Reunion." Hojo managed to quite thoroughly ruin it.

For once Aerith's trauma over Sephiroth comes in handy, helping to break her from the vision the crystal showed. I feel a little bad for the silver haired pretty boy though, Aerith is already hoping the Turks being younger means they're fine but the idea being applied to Seph is just too much for her.

Wonder how Freya's going to get on with Kain? They're dragoons, but they don't share a common history so it might lead to something interesting.

Still, only one combat encounter. Not too bad all things told. Everyone did pretty well for their first time against the Heartless. Now we just need to hold out until the siege breaks.

Sweet. Montblanc is a (presumably) a big deal and Krjn is a powerful hunter in her own right. We still don't have a tank character though.

It's funny the leader joined along. Makes this favor feel like a way bigger deal. But it's a good opportunity for information gathering about a new threat too.

the QP came in pretty handy here for pushing through, really lucky. whoever spent that should definitely congratulate themselves, saved us from the very real possibility of not being able to deal with another wave of breaking through (and even if we did succeed, the possible bad luck on getting through after that!). at the very least definitely not without using combat items, which we don't want to need. unlocking things like formations for a boost could probs come in handy tbh

looks like bars will restore in the time before we have to fight the siege again, nice. i wonder if that's a factor of only having a single wave of combat going into it or it'd be the case regardless?

either way, we have it, which will definitely help. fingers crossed for the actual fight and that we can effectively stiffen the existing lines/prevent breakthroughs/guard priority targets or whatever we end up doing.
looks like there's not much to do with the holy crystal at the moment which is a shame, but can't be helped. guess we just need to hold back upcoming waves and see what our options are afterwards to try and solve this long-term? fingers crossed we'll have a chance to prep for the siege right now too, boosts from setup should definitely come in handy

Oh, the QP rules got changed! Thank goodness that roll was good enough to push us over, I was fully expecting to have provided a bigger bonus than what we actually got.

"I brought you a bunch of professional monster hunters from Dalmasca, and a familiar face."

Hahaha, he thinks she's a hallucination ghost! Awwww. Situation is tense, yeah, but I hope Aerith's help lets him breathe if just a little easier.

Man, now my FFXIV head is going 'hmm, a place for those who are lost, dealing with the subject of anger, vengeance and forgiveness.'

Could bring in pre- Heavensward Estinien to add one more traumatized dragoon.

And that's why the Heartless are feared across the multiverse everyone! We nearly died to a handful of weakened grunts after all.

Good to have the hunters with us. We're going to need them.

As for the crsytal...*Shudders*, though I concurr on the exact feeling rage should be.

Damn that was rough. But we got some pretty strong friends huh? Mountblanc Alone is a nice catch.

Crystal showing stupid peace huh? We really do need to address certain trauma eventually if we ever hope to avert the crisis without turning Zack against us.

Alright. Established contact. Great job!

Now comes the hard part. The Heartless want the crystal, and we can't just give it to them. But we can't move it or do whatever we did with the wind crystal yet. We probably have to fight a boss Heartless, which.... not great. Not optimistic about that. It'll probably one of those big ass boys with the tentacle hair. I forget their name.

Gonna need to see what we have to work with to figure out how to proceed....

You're thinking of Darksides, though I'm not sure we'll be seeing one of those given that there's already a Boss Heartless associated with Traverse Town in the Guard Armor / Reverse Armor.
