A Little Exploring
[X] Refuse to let their mind-reader in.
-[X] Politely but firmly.

[X] Scout your surroundings... just wander around. No magic needed.

"Well, yes. It would only be a brief, directed search ...." Verossa trails off again as you shake your head. You don't know him, or whether any of them are trustworthy, and you're not sure you would let them look at your thoughts even if you did trust them.

"No. I'm sorry, but I will not allow you to read my mind." You bow your head the tiniest bit, and while Schach is frowning, Verossa's face has cleared a bit.

"That's quite alright," he says as he picks up the box. He grimaces at the torn side and shakes his head. "Well, hopefully I'll be seeing you again shortly, Miss Scarlet - probably not tomorrow, but perhaps the next day. It seems you made quite an impression at the Simulator. Have a good time," he says, smiling as he leaves. You feel much better - even if you don't really like being pushed away like this, at least Vita hasn't done it to forget about you, and she's really trying to get you a Device! You giggle softly and spin in place, arms crossed over your chest. Then you remember Schach is still there, and stop spinning.

"Hey, what were you doing before?" She blinks, apparently confused by the question.

"Ah, you mean before I came to see you?" You nod. "Well, I was teaching some of the Initiates. Would you be interested in joining us?" You shake your head; she must be talking about prayers and stuff like that, and maybe how to serve other people - she did bring that tea set, after all, and she didn't do a terrible job, even if she couldn't compare to Sakuya. You'd rather do something else.

"Ah! Hey, can I go outside? Or look around here?" You put on a pleading face, and she looks away for a moment.

"Well, we don't intend for you to feel locked up, so ... yes, I suppose if you wish you may explore a little, although some areas are restricted, and I do hope you will recognize them when you encounter them?" You sigh - she probably means thing like locked doors and guards, and those usually mean fun and interesting things! - and nod. She sighs, then looks a little concerned. "Alright. Do you need a guide? I can take you, or have someone else do it if you'd prefer that." You shake your head.

"No, I'll be fine. If there's anything specific I want to ask, I'll just ask someone nearby!" You giggle, then look outside again. "Oh! And I'll try to keep away from crowded areas, okay?" You jingle your wings, and she smiles.

"That would help, thank you. Just one more thing - you are supposed to be here for the time being, so will you promise you won't try to leave?" You make a face; it's not like you would know where to go, anyway!

"I promise; for now, at least, I'll stay here." She bows and glances at the tea set; you nod and she takes it with her when she leaves. You giggle again; now you have a completely new environment to explore! Even if you did agree to those silly rules ... mainly because you're pretty sure that Vita would be upset if you did anything fun around them. You're going to have to teach her the proper way to behave at some point. You stretch and take out your parasol; you don't think you'll need it, since it looks pretty late, but you like carrying Laevateinn, and this is pretty close - and you can keep your wings from being observed once you get outside, too. That should make everyone happy!

The hallway is quiet when you step outside your room; in fact, a quick check reveals that none of the rooms seem to be occupied. Either they don't get many guests, or they cleared out this hall just for you. It's certainly a very nice area; it's not quite as fancy as what's present in the mansion, but the quality is very similar. Of course, once you've seen one room, you've seen pretty much all of them; a few have some extra things in them, like the machines in your room, but there's not a whole lot of change. Even the colors in the rooms are all nearly identical, which is a little strange to look at.

You decide to go outside first, then see what the rest of the building is like, and you open up your parasol right after stepping outside. You notice a couple slits running through it that weren't there before - probably sustained when Vita was attacked. You add that to your mental list of checks and balances for that person and his organization. Looking around, you find yourself on a large, well-kept yard, with smooth paved walkways going straight in some places and winding in others; you walk along one winding path that takes you close to the trees and - you think - eventually passes near what seems to be a curtain wall.

The trees, of course, are trees - they're made of wood, they burn easily, and you could probably rip up any of the ones here with ease. The wall, when you reach it, gives you a few things to think about. It's made of a smooth brown stone, and it certainly does seem to be a curtain wall ... which makes no sense to you, because when you look around from the top of the wall, you can see higher terrain around the castle. Within throwing distance for you, or a bowshot for a human. This strikes you as not only strange - you can't see very far if there are mountains in the way, after all - but very stupid, since the point of a wall is to keep things out, and some of the high ground is close enough to let someone in. Then you turn to look at the castle itself ... which is part castle, part mansion, and part cathedral. It seems to be mostly built of the same brown stone as the wall, and it certainly seems solidly built for the most part, which is why you call it a castle. That, and it's really big ... which is part of why you call it a cathedral, but also because it has the sculpted architecture you associate with such buildings. And mansion because some parts are obviously intended to be habitations, and while some are new additions, some seem to have been part of the structure from the beginning. Maybe whoever built it was touched in the head?

You walk along the wall, admiring the view of both the landscape and the building until you come to the front of the estate. And you can tell it's the front because not only is there a large crowd of people in the courtyard, but there are large doors into the building ... and a large road leading out. You want very little more than you want Schach right in front of you right now, because you don't like being tricked. She tricked you into thinking you wouldn't be able to find out where Vita was, and then she made you promise not to leave! You grind the handle of your parasol in your grip, then turn and kick the crenellation beside you, shattering it. You take a few steps and kick the next one - more to get rid of the now-extraneous shoe than because you want to break more of the wall. You glare out into the stony plain the road carves through until you feel a little calmer, then turn back to the building. You could go in the front way ... but there are still a lot of people there, and you're definitely not in the mood to deal with them politely. Looking around, you see some open windows. Perfect.

You walk back so you won't be completely obvious, then fly onto the roof and walk to the nearest window and drop in. You smile at the startled blonde woman sitting at her desk, then put your parasol away. While she's still trying to figure out who you are and what you're doing there, you hover up and pat her on the head, smile very toothily, and head toward the door when she recoils, paling. You nod to the butler outside the door, who also seems shocked by your sudden appearance, and head down the hallway.

It's rather strange - every time you find a building that seems to be much larger than it needs to be, it turns out to be true. Just like the mansion, this building has lots and lots of the same room over and over. Sure, it has some rooms that are simply very large - you found the cafeteria, for example - but there are other rooms that only had slight changes, like who was in them or what color the flowers were. Eventually you find Schach - she's actually outside with a group of people, and she seems to be leading them in combat drills. She turns to look at you as you glare reproachfully at her.

"Miss Scarlet! Is there something I can help you with?"

The waiting is killing me, when will we get a device or at least some blood. At the rate we're going Flandre might just kill for a drink and then she'll probably end up losing her hat.

Yes, it's kind of a shame Flandre decided to join the good guys and conceal her true nature, isn't it? And then she put poor old Headless on a leash, too ... :(

Either we do this or keep murder-hoboing around, leaving nothing but ash and destruction in our wake. And eventually even Flandre would get bored with that, but she wouldn't until long after we did and that would not be a fun game to play.

Our character growth is going to come about one of two ways, destroying so much even Flandre starts to feel bored/regretful over it or by trying to control ourselves.

Yea, when we tried otherwise last time, we missed out on the chance of "best fight" and a time stopping maid of our own. (Yea, we got some shiny things and pointy things, but we know we could of gotten so much more)
Even Flandre is capable of learning from her mistakes...at least a little bit.

...There was an option to join Spaghetti?

Hopefully when we win the trust of these guys and make a device of our own, they'll be able to unlock what makes a Witch tick and get us some proper servants. Vita's nice, but some Youkai that can understand Flan's thought process will give her someone to relate to more easily.

I remain convinced that's the path to stability for Flandre. She's a youkai, so the deaths of strangers is never going to phase her, and attacking her for it is only going to piss her off. Someone she's responsible for suffering for her actions, in a way that she might never see them again? That will get her attention.

True, but Flan's not doing things that would let her learn about the world and interact with it; she's being secretive, which is pushing more of the "Can we trust her?" buttons, and the only person she's actually "admitted" her true nature to is the one who's working pretty much all day, every day on training her kids. She is also letting herself be controlled, a bit, because she's under the impression that it will help her achieve her goals, so she's pretty much just reacting to things as they come along, rather than actively pursue them in a (for her) meaningful fashion.

... At least, that's how I've been trying to write her. For all I know, I've been missing the mark entirely.

Anyway, votes are still open.

...Gah. And paranoia loses the day once more....

Anyway, two things:

First, if we're willing to rules-lawyer a bit, we didn't actually promise Schach anything -

"I promise; for now, at least, I'll stay here."

Emphasis mine. 'Now' is such an ill-defined word, isn't it?

Second, what is the extent of Flandre's invisibility? Specifically, can she be detected with magic?

If she can be detected with magic:

[] Ask her ...
- [] Who the blonde woman was.
- [] Who the woman in all the pictures is - the one with mismatched eyes.
- [] When you can talk to Vita or Nanoha.
- [] If theres anything to do, you're bored

If she cannot be detected with magic:

[x] "No, just looking around."
-[x] Find one of those locked doors Schach was talking about - invisibly, of course - and try to get in.

Now edited.

She can, but she doesn't like to. Original intent was 2-3 days anyway - Flan's willing to wait, but not long.

Second, what is the extent of Flandre's invisibility? Specifically, can she be detected with magic?
Depends on the nature of the magic and how strong it is, as well as what the magic is looking for. For example, way back in What a Mess, Momo's ability to detect things didn't let her find Flan until she was right in front of them and Momo was looking at her. It's possible to brute-force the invisibility, to 'detect' through it by knowing what it does, and to detect what's being masked by working around its effects.

You hold your reproachful stare for a long moment, then giggle and give her a special grin - and just like every other human you've given that grin to, she recoils, and you change it to a more normal, more pleasant, expression. No sense antagonizing her yet, after all ... but you won't forget how she tricked you.

"Hmm, maybe? I was exploring, and then I had some questions, but most of the people I saw were either busy or in a big crowd, so I decided to keep them in my head and ask someone who didn't look too busy. Do you know anyone who isn't too busy?" You tilt your head and freeze in place as she considers your question, and she nods.

"Well, if you can wait just a few minutes, I'll be free; the lesson's almost over, and then it'll be time to eat." You nod energetically, then spin around and jump up onto the ornamental lip over the door, turning again to crouch like an adorable gargoyle. Schach stares at you for a moment, then sighs and turns back to the assembled group - who are also all staring at you, at least until she gets their attention again. True to her word - this time - the drills pass quickly, simple rote pattern strikes and blocks, then some stretching, and then they're dismissed. Curiously, no one seems to want to walk through the door you're perched over. "Well, come on, let's get something to eat."

"Mmm ... no, I'm not hungry." Schach looks at you in surprise as you hop down and start walking down one of the paths. "Why don't we talk on the way back to my room?"

"It's been more than a day since you last ate anything, you really do need to have dinner," she says sternly. You shrug and keep walking, and you hear her footsteps following you.

"I'm not hungry at all right now, so it's fine," you begin, then pause and spin around, smiling cheerfully at her. "But since you're so very worried about me, if I get really hungry, I'll go see you first, okay? Anyway, I didn't explore everything, but I did find the cafeteria, so I'll be fine on my own anyway. But, my first question! So, I was walking around on the wall, and then I got to the front courtyard, and since there were a lot of people, I decided to go inside and look around, so I flew up to the roof and went in one of the windows, and there was this blonde woman at the desk, writing something, and she had a butler outside her room, so I was wondering who she is. Is she anyone important?" Schach sighs as you spin once again and keep walking.

"Ahh ... yes, that was Lady Carim Gracia," she says, sounding resigned. "She's the head of the Belkan Church, and my superior. She has some business right now that is keeping her busy, but she did want to meet you when that is finished. May I ask you something?" You spin around, walking backward, and cock your head. "What happened to your shoes?" You shrug.

"I kicked a wall. Well, twice - once for each shoe. They broke, so I left them there." You turn around so you're walking properly, and so you don't have to look at the faces she keeps making. "Anyway, there were a bunch of old paintings and stuff on some walls, and there was one lady with mismatched eyes, one green and one red. Is she someone I should meet?"

"That, I'm afraid, is something impossible - she is the last Saint King, Sankt-Kaiser Olivie Sägebrecht, and she died quite a long time ago. Her actions and beliefs formed the basis on which this Church was founded, in fact." She gives you a brief history of the Saint Kings and their empire, Belka, and you can't help but feel like you'd have been more at home there than here. It reminds you of home, back on Earth, really ....

"So she's not sleeping under some mountain somewhere, I suppose," you say as Schach winds down her lesson. Her footsteps stop, and you continue. "That's how legends usually go - the important king or knight dies, or seems to, but is actually sleeping in a mountain or on a special island or something, and will come back to save the land if something terrible happens to it." She starts following you again.

"... Perhaps, but those are legends, and this is reality. She died, and she isn't coming back."

"Hm. Too bad, I think I'd like to meet some of those Ancient Belkans - they seem like interesting people." You spin yourself around and jump toward Schach. "Anyway, when can I see Vita again, or Nanoha? I wanna see them!" She blinks and takes an inadvertent step back as you pout.

"Ah, well, I don't think they'll be free for visits for several days at least, since they're still training, but I can probably arrange a video-call, if that's acceptable." You shake your head.

"No. Has to be in person, so I know it's them." She sighs, so you press forward. "I mean, you already said they're busy, right? So how can I tell if it's actually them and not someone pretending to be them? If I can do it, why can't someone else? It's not like faking a screen is hard for magicians, after all." She stares at you; is voice mimicry really so hard for them to do? It's not even magic ... maybe it's just how quickly you switched between Verossa, Nanoha, Vita, and Schach's voices? "Well, if that's the case," you say, dropping back to your normal voice, "may I have some pencils and drawing paper? I'd like to draw some things for Vita, and maybe for home as well."

"... Yes, some can be brought to you; would you like to participate in some activities here, as well? Enrollment in the school is probably not possible, but we can have someone tutor you .... Unfortunately, there are not many 'activities' to do here - if you have a particular request, we may be able to have something brought in." Notably, you fail to hear anything resembling '... let you out of our conrol.' You wonder if the imprisonment is intentional or if they really think they know what's best for you ....

That was more than two days ago (Tuesday, by your internal reckoning - you wonder whether you should find out what day it is). In the intervening time, you finished your exploration of the Church, and the only really interesting place you found was its modest library. You watched a couple of Schach's combat classes; all of the students were completely new to weapons, but the instructors at least seemed to know what they were doing. And Schach continued to bring you tea, twice a day, although still unblooded, although she told you last night that the 'lab test' that Verossa was planning would be ready today!

You also drew some pictures for home: pictures of the Church, and its silly defense plan, and the Drones you fought, and some of the buildings; and for Vita, so she will know what to expect, you made drawings of the mansion, and Meiling and Sakuya, and the Library and Patchouli - and Remilia and you, of course! All annotated, too.

But right now, none of that matters to you. What does matter is the near-crippling pain racking your skull. It's not just painful, it's absolutely maddening ... and you have no idea what's causing it.

What do you do?

[ ] Attempt to resist it.*
- Do you tell anyone about it? Allow them to examine you?

[ ] Maybe blood will make you feel better?
- [ ] Sister Schach - you did say you'd see her first when you got hungry, after all ....
- [ ] Someone else?

[ ] Find Vita.

[ ] Obviously the Church is doing something to you ...
- [ ] Fight back! Kill them all.
- [ ] Run away!
- - [ ] Where?

[ ] Just smash things until you feel better!

[ ] Ask Headless.*

[ ] Other?*

*: Attempting to ignore the pain will require a roll above 60 on a d100, which I will make if the vote wins. Failing the roll will default to smashing things.

*: Asking Headless is it's own vote; it can't be combined with others, as Flan will follow the course of action Headless suggests. Headless will not attempt to deliberately sabotage Flandre's goals.

*: Write-ins that are complex will require the roll associated with attempting to ignore the pain. I will inform you if it's too complex as soon as I can; generally, if it requires making a specific distinction between things that Flan doesn't have a clear focus on or involves talking, it probably needs the roll.

EDIT: Currently, it's ~2 in the morning on Friday.

-[X] Complain to Schach about it.
--[X] Ask for blood, type O whole blood. Flandre will use it in private.

Not a big fan of the mystery box, just because she won't screw us over on purpose doesn't mean it won't happen accidentally and considering her plan will probably be to threaten someone or eat someone avoiding Headless's plans until we finally have a device is probably a good idea.

Bit of a shame Flandre didn't ask for blood beforehand but now things are getting desperate, outing that she needs to eat blood due to a medical condition is much less terrible than losing control and eating someone.
