Training Satsuki
[X] Work with Satsuki on combat skills.

"Anyway, as long as we're out here, would it be alright if I keep using the Simulator for a bit?" Shari takes a few seconds to react to your question, finally jerking around to frown at you just before Ginga can step forward to shake her shoulder.

"Ah, yes, but - um, what would you be using it for?" You grin and roll your head back to look at Satsuki. Your servant swallows nervously and you giggle before looking back at Shari.

"I think I want to see Satsuki actually fight, even if it's just practice, and since the Gadget Drones aren't that dangerous, they'd be good for her." Shari's frown doesn't fade, though, and you shrug. "It's fine if we can't, of course. We can just go to one of the normal training areas and I can work her on form and technique." She taps at the keyboard a few times, looking at a few screens that pass too quickly for you to get a good idea of what they show.

"A little bit should be fine," Ginga says, and Shari hesitantly nods. "Twenty minutes?"

"That should be enough. I'll just go down there with her, okay? You'll be able to hear what I want if I just say it, right?" The buildings of the Simulator rise up out of nowhere once more.

"Yes, we'll be keeping an eye on you." You grin at Ginga and nod before turning to face Satsuki.

"Okay, come on!" You hop over the railing and glide along the bridge to the main area of the Simulator. After a moment, Satsuki leaps over the barrier as well and hurries to catch up, holding her skirt up so she doesn't trip. Once you're suitably far into the arena you slow to a halt and land. "Okay, could I get one of the big round Gadget Drones? Don't have it do anything, just have it sit there." Satsuki looks around curiously, then takes a nervous step back as the massive sphere rises out of the ground. You pat her shoulder. "Alright, so this is the stronger of the two main enemy types this place uses. It's a magical recreation of a machine, so there's absolutely no problem with you destroying it, okay? Good. Now, this one isn't going to do anything, so I want you to go hit it." She carefully walks up to it and touches it gingerly before nodding to herself and taking a step back. Her feet are much too close together, and when she throws her punch she swings it around to the side instead of hitting it straight, but she's still strong enough to knock the machine away, its armor cracked where she hit it. You nod - not good, really, but at least she's putting force into her attacks. "Now I want you to hit it as hard as you can."

She takes a deep breath and walks closer to it, clenches her fist, and takes the last step while driving her fist forward and up. The shriek of tearing metal answers her strike and she shakes her hand out as the Drone lands and rolls away. "Did … did I do well?" You don't answer immediately, instead walking past her to inspect the damage she caused.

"Hmm … are the Drones supposed to be this light?"

"Doctor Scaglietti's Drones were appropriately massive, but the ones that are in use now tend to be lower-quality, with less armor and sophistication. Would you prefer to use the originals?" You shrug at Ginga's question as you study the Drone; the second impact is much more obvious than the first, and the armor belt was actually torn away from the lower section - the cause of the tearing metal. You turn back to Satsuki and nod, smiling, and she starts to sag in relief before catching herself and stiffening. You giggle and wave her to come closer.

"Alright, so this is the first time you've really had practice, right? That's why I'm not too upset with your performance." Her good cheer vanishes and she looks apprehensive until you shake your head. "You're not in trouble. There are just problems with the way you struck that I'll be correcting. Before that, however - why did you try punching it?" She blinks and cocks her head confusedly.

"You said to hit it, Flandre-sama?" You hold up one hand, fingers curled into claws, and whirl, slashing at the Drone and scoring its armor.

"Can you do that?" She stares at the damaged armor, then looks at her hands and slowly shakes her head. "Fine, fine. We'll work on that. Then how about … this?" You drive your fingers into the armor and grip the interior - then rip out the heart-sized chunk of armor and hold it up to her. She walks up to the Drone, but after staring at it for a moment she turns back to look at you pleadingly, and you sigh and toss the chunk of armor away. "Something else to work on, then. Okay, Ginga, we don't need this one anymore. Could we get a few of the smaller ones? Thank you." Four of the cylindrical Drones rise up out of the ground as the big one fades away. You gesture for one of them to come closer and it flies toward you. At your nod Satsuki walks up to it and hits it, still standing too tall, but at least this time she doesn't throw her arm around. The Drone crumples and soars away, tumbling to the ground and rolling for a few meters. You wait for a moment to see if it rises, but when it remains still you nod in satisfaction. "Now, if you could have the remaining three try to avoid her attacks? Satsuki, I want you to destroy the rest of them."

"Y-Yes, Flandre-sama." The Drones drift away from each other as Satsuki begins her approach, but they stay in the intersection so she doesn't have to chase them across the whole arena. It still takes her an embarrassingly long several minutes to destroy them all, due in part to her caution, and partly because she overbalances when she makes rushing attacks and the Drones are able to escape her easily. Perhaps fueled by her embarrassment at her performance, she resorts to the basic tool use to defeat the last one - she picks up one of the damaged Drones and hurls it at the final target. She slumps when it connects, and jumps back nervously when they explode together. When she finally meets your eyes she immediately blushes and looks down at her feet. Not that you need to rebuke her any more right now.

"Alright. Thank you, Ginga, Shari. I think we'll find an out-of-the-way place and just work -" A stroke of light catches your eye and your eyes narrow. "Is it expected to rain anytime soon?"

"Ahhh … thunderstorms farther north, but they aren't expecting anything heavier than a light rain over here. Shouldn't start for another hour or two." Your mouth twists and you sigh.

"Thank you. Thank you for the use of the Simulator. For now, I think we'll find an unused room and work on form and technique."

"Too good to wor-" You force yourself to breathe normally as Ginga cuts off the communication before you can hear the rest of what Nove has to say. She sounded more bitter than mocking, though, so maybe she's just irritated and doesn't remember - or know, possibly - that running water doesn't mix well with you. Well, whatever; you float over to Satsuki and, without warning, pick her up in your arms and start flying toward Long Arch. Satsuki stares at you with a combination of embarrassment and terror, neither of which is particularly helped by your expression of dull annoyance. The Simulator fades away before you reach the edge of it, and when you pass over the Mid-Childans you don't see Wendi or Shari.

Once you're inside you let Satsuki walk and float quickly through the halls until you find a suitably-large unused room to work in. You send out your clones to move the chairs and tables out of the way and turn to face your servant. "Right, either Meiling didn't teach you right, or you just didn't think about what she told you, so we're going to get right to the basics. The most important thing about fighting is how you stand and hold yourself, because that dictates your reach, offensive and defensive options, and how balanced you are. Standing like this," you stand up straight, "is awful from a fighting perspective, because you have no balance, stunted reach, and you're completely open. You want to stand more like this," you settle into a wider stance, one foot forward, " because it's more stable, your body is better protected, and you can lean forward without ruining your balance. Now, try standing like this." She stares at your feet for a moment before trying to copy you, and you titter quietly. "Wrong, wrong, wrong. Stay that way." You walk forward and physically move her body so she's standing properly - her shoulders, her back, her head, her knees, and her foot positioning. You step back when you're finished.

"It's … uncomfortable." You snort at the complaint.

"Your posture needs work. Alright, now stand with the other leg forward." She freezes for a moment, then attempts to comply. You sigh and fix her positioning again - and then have her switch stances again. And again, you fix her positioning and then have her switch stances. After an hour you add another stance, this one more forward and aggressive, and after an hour of switching and correcting between the four you add another, more defensive stance, and spend the next two hours doing nothing but switching between them. "Right, so you remember how you're supposed to stand? Good, now every day, at least twice a day, spend fifteen minutes just switching between them so they become second nature."

"Yes, Flandre-sama." Her voice is subdued and you sigh. You haven't even gotten to the really boring parts yet … of course, if you can get a sparring partner for her, you should be able to make some of those a little less boring. But that's far in the future.

What do you do?

Ooooh boy... Seems whatever Meiling taught her does not stick instinctively. At least not without some real pressure on her like with Kuro. Nevermind style, someone to help her remember the basics may be best.

She needs to work on rote practice for the next part. Leave her to getting her stance grounded.

Checking out the kitchen again is actually a valid option.

What's in a kitchen can change day to day (aka the food in it)

Ah well...

...Hmmm, maybe Satsuki is the type that learns more in a real fight more than practice too...

While I believe you (probably) meant those separately, it does raise the possibility of Flandre grabbing a country or two and putting Satsuki in charge so she gets used to politics more quickly... :p

"Then we're done with that for now. You still have some paper and a pen for taking notes, right? Good, go get them and meet me in the same classroom as we were in for your etiquette lesson." She bows hastily.

"Y-Yes, Flandre-sama!" You're pretty sure you see her smile when she runs off, but it's not terribly important - whatever she thinks she's getting tonight is going to be wrong. Your clones return the room to its original setup as you walk out and head toward the classroom. Satsuki meets up with you at the door, scrambling to a halt and bowing; you nod back and walk in, letting her follow. Once she's settled you sit on the edge of the table and look at her.

"What do you think politics is?" Her face blanks and she stiffens.

"Umm … it's how countries talk to each other?" You wait for a moment, to see if she elaborates, then shake your head.

"Wrong. At best, I could give you some partial credit, but not very much. Politics is how organized societies get things done. Talking to other societies, talking to things that aren't societies, war, trade - all are aspects of politics." She frowns and tilts her head to the side.

"War is …?" You nod.

"Yes. War is distinct from diplomacy, which covers most of the talking parts, but both fall under the purview of politics. Also, remember that I specifically said 'organized societies' instead of countries - the distinction is important, because politics happen internally within a state, regardless of whether that state is a country, a city-state, a coalition of countries, a school, or a guild. It's not even necessarily between similarly-ranked entities within those societies, either; if you tried convincing me to teach you different aspects of combat, for example, or if you tried to get me to not teach you about politics, those are aspects of politics." Her frown deepens and she looks down at her paper.

"But … just the two of us?" You nod.

"It qualifies. A human and nature doesn't, and a human and a hostile animal doesn't, because there generally isn't any organization or intelligence on at least one side of the line, but two hunters who come to an informal agreement about a stream they both use for water, even if they never speak to each other, are practicing politics." She nods slowly and you smile. "Good. Now, one of the keys to understanding politics is being able to understand how entities think, what they value. If you can't understand another entity or organization, not even enough to make a reasonable guess as to the results of a given action, diplomacy and trade is going to fail. If you can't understand their physical make-up - or lack thereof - and capabilities, force is probably going to fail."

"Like … um, with you and Patchouli? Sorry!" She flinches at your scowl and you sigh.

"Yes, to a degree. That's also an example of why high levels of intelligence are not necessarily going to help with politics - Patchouli is very intelligent, but we're simply too different for that to make up the difference." You shake your head quickly, pushing the magician out of your head. Family affairs really aren't something you want to talk about here, anyway. "Lack of understanding is also why most youkai/human interactions fail - most youkai don't or can't understand human mindsets, and most humans aren't willing to consider youkai mindsets. Not unreasonable on their part, but when a youkai that can and does understand their mindset comes along, it usually has to hide itself somehow even if it isn't hostile …." Your eyes narrow and you mock-scowl at Satsuki. "And this is all just a little too focused." She relaxes and smiles shyly.

"Um, sorry, Flandre-sama." You purse your lips before nodding.

"Very well. Now, where was I …? Right. Now, a proper understanding of etiquette is very important for politics, which is part of why these are the two lessons I'm starting with. Understanding etiquette isn't just about not insulting people unintentionally, but also about proper respect and an understanding of authority." You explain the interactions between the two, how knowing the etiquette involved lets you use certain options that aren't necessarily polite ones that are associated with etiquette - how knowing that certain entities are regarded as higher than another and deliberately flaunting that in some way is a statement of political intent, and how changing the way you treat those two entities subsequently can be taken. … More and more, it seems like staying here to teach would be more beneficial, because you could use examples she can relate to, or possibly even participate in - maybe you could even give her temporary command for a while, so she gets used to both authority and the 'safer' politics of the military's chain of command. It would certainly be easier and less dangerous than giving her a country of her own!

Of course, that would mean embroiling yourself in politics as well, and that's an arena you've never been particularly adept in. Sure, you know the theories well enough, and you can play certain parts very well, but you're still a youkai and tend to be direct and set in your ways. Your favorites are your favorites, and playing politics to keep other people from rebelling isn't something you're good at keeping track of. Cudgels are more subtle than you, because you just don't care.

But Satsuki doesn't hear any of that. All she hears is you explaining the basics of politics - different types of interactions, the situations each is usually used for and why, and so on. She actually already knows most of the basics, or at least is reasonably familiar with them, and is able to speak about some of the more subtle interactions, explaining that she witnessed some of them in school. She also quickly grasps how the internal structure of a society is political - the rules and segregations, customs and traditions. Unlike the etiquette lesson, she has some experience in the specifics of what you're teaching. Hmm … you'll need some books.

Eventually you roll your shoulders and slide off the table. "Well, that's it for tonight," you say, and she cocks her head to the side. "There's about an hour until dawn, so you should have some time to clean yourself up a bit before you have to sleep." She starts, not having kept track of the passage of time, then jumps to her feet and bows.

"Thank you, Flandre-sama. And, um … I'm sorry about … um …." You wave her away gently; she nods again and bows before gathering her materials and scurrying out of the room, bowing again after crossing the threshold. You sigh and shake your head.

Hmmm... Well, there's nothing wrong on the intellectual side so as far as combat go, we really could use someone closer to her mindset for anything combat-related to stick instead of, well, Flandre. A shame we could not give her more time with Meiling.
