Kitchen Checkup
[X] Make sure the kitchen is ready.

The kitchen calls to you; you have work you will need to do, and you need to ensure that the tools are ready. You giggle at your drama and make your way to the kitchen. The first thing that catches your eye is a small boxy device with buttons for each letter of the Mid-Childan alphabet; the second is Ginga's note on the device - a text-only communication tool you can use to send her a list of ingredients you'll need, either specifically or to replenish existing stocks - and the list of dishes for tonight. As promised, none of them should take more than a few hours. It's a fairly normal list, really, with a couple pasta dishes for the major courses, bread rolls in a couple varieties, a particular variety of salad … all have the required ingredients and directions listed, and the note ends with a request for you to send Ginga a note if there's anything it looks like you can't make. Not that you really expect that to be the case.

You bring the list and the device with you as you investigate the food stores. Reasonably well-stocked, with all the less-perishable essentials present in substantial quantities. And there are so many pasta supplies - but after recalling the amount the prisoners and Ginga were eating when you had dinner with them, it's not such a surprise. Things that need to be kept cool - fruits and vegetables, and milk - are present in a rather less industrial scale, and things that need to be kept frozen are there only in limited quantities. The most interesting thing is the wall of shelves with the prisoners' names Hmm … are they taking turns making meals, then? Footsteps in the kitchen proper draw your attention and you turn, wondering if you should investigate, but it turns out to be unnecessary as Wendi walks up to the door and stops abruptly, staring at you for a moment.

"Oh, um - you're in here," she says dumbly, and you nod slowly.

"I am. Looking at supplies for tonight." A nervous grin breaks across her face and she nods quickly.

"Oh, right. And you found our wall." She stutters slightly as she talks, a barely-noticeable tic, and you step back to give her room. "Um, we've been doing some experimenting with cooking - it's just something to do, you know, to pass the time and actually do something instead of sitting around reading or something like that. I mean, none of us are really great at it or anything, but, um, I don't know, maybe if you want some help making stuff we could chip in? I mean, even Nove wouldn't dare burn water or anything, something important like this, but, I mean, you're just one person, so maybe we could just keep an eye on things for you, maybe hold something, 'cause your arms are a bit short?" She takes a deep breath and covers her mouth before leaning forward and looking sidelong at you. Her shoulders slump as you seem to ignore her.

"… I do have my clones, remember?" You swivel your head to meet her eyes and she blinks before blushing slightly and starting to babble an apology. "I do appreciate the offer, however." She freezes again before nodding jerkily.

"Oh, um, no, I'd … totally forgotten about that." She clenches her fists and breathes raggedly.

"Would you be more comfortable if I left?" Her head jerks back and forth in denial.

"Nononono! You're fine, completely okay, not a problem!" You hold her gaze for a long moment, obviously waiting for her to retract her denial and explain that you do make her nervous and she'd prefer that you leave … but she doesn't say anything, so you nod.

"Okay." You turn your attention back to the girls' shelves, but there's nothing strange or out of the ordinary so you consult the list of ingredients. If there's no need to rush, you might as well double-check everything. Maybe even triple-check, if there's something you can't imitate with something else. A few spices and condiments go on the list almost instantly, not being present in anything like the required quantities, and after a minute of Wendi staring at you anxiously, an odd thing about the list occurs to you. There aren't any drinks, and the supplies in here aren't bad, but aren't overly well-stocked, either. And alcohol is entirely lacking. You shake your head sadly before turning back to Wendi. "Is there a specific location drinks are kept? Or is what's in here all there is?" She flinches at your question before plastering a smile back on her face.

"Drinks … um, there's water, and what's in here … don't think there's anything else …. Ah, that's a problem, isn't it?" You nod and add a note about drinks to your list for Ginga.

"A little bit. Wouldn't be a good idea to have a lot of good food if you don't have drinks of appropriate quality and quantity as well." You frown at the list of things you're supposed to make. You aren't actually sure how many people are coming, and that's going to affect what you ask Ginga to bring, too. Nothing is written to feed more than twenty or so people, given the presumed portion sizes and amounts …. "Do you know how many people will be coming?" She stiffens again before shaking her head and you glower at the list. Considering what's here … you triple the amounts you're asking Ginga to bring and add a few more to the list, then add another note explaining the reasoning for how much you're asking for and what it's okay to reduce or remove if there are fewer people coming. You check the list and your numbers again, then make sure you're following Ginga's instructions and send it to her. You sigh and start setting aside the things you'll be using. When you finish, Wendi is still standing awkwardly, watching you nervously. You stretch and consider your next move. You're not actually being a problem here, after all ….

What do you do?

[ ] Stay in the kitchen area.
- [ ] Ask Wendi if you can help with anything.

[ ] Take a nap.

[ ] Go talk to Cinque.
- About?

[ ] Go talk to Nove.
- About?

[ ] Other?

... Anyone else tempted to offer to teach them how to cook?
I suspect it could go horribly wrong and end in flames/blood, though, even if they accepted.

- [x] Ask Wendi if she interested for some breakfast? If she is you can cook up a meal for her.

In the Kitchen with Wendi

"… Well, I guess that's it for now." Wendi flinches slightly but covers it up with a forced smile. "You're staying here, right?" She nods jerkily.

"Y-yeah. Some stuff I want to try making for Cinque and Nove. And then I'll just make up some stuff for breakfast. Um, was there anything you wanted?" You shrug and grunt noncommittally.

"Mm. I'm fine, thank you. Is there anything I can help you with? Cooking advice or ideas?" You smile innocently at her as she stiffens and, slowly, shakes her head.

"No … no thanks. I'll be fine." You shrug again.

"Okay. I'll be out there, so if you change your mind, just ask!" You turn around and walk out to the kitchen proper, finding yourself a place to sit where you can see everything … and, conversely, where someone working in the kitchen can't help but be aware of your presence. Out of the way, of course, but definitely there. Ah, it's just like the fairy maids back home!

Wendi spends some time in the pantry, mostly being very quiet, but after a while you hear her humming to herself and moving around normally. You take out a sheet of paper and a pen and start sketching the kitchen. It won't be quite as good as a normal portrait, but it's good to work purely from references from time to time. And then, of course, the main attraction comes in and promptly drops the bag she's carrying. You stare at her. "Ah … you're still here." You nod.

"I did say that I'd be out here." She blinks dumbly and you lean to the side to see what was in the bag, but nothing spilled out so it's still a mystery. "Is it a problem for you?" She frowns and works her hands.

"It's … ah …." You tilt your head to the side and she shakes her head irritatedly before picking up the bag and walking to another counter. You raise your eyebrows, but she didn't say anything, so … is she trying to work on her tolerance, or does she just like something about you being here? Regardless, you start making sketches of her at work - nothing too detailed, just capturing her way of standing and how she moves. Besides, it's something to do besides sit there and stare a hole in her back. Wendi spends a few minutes separating everything from the bag - a few varieties of vegetables, milk, and a couple small jars that probably have spices in them - and getting a few pots ready. After finally filling a large pot with water and setting it over a stovetop to boil she gets a knife and starts chopping up one of the vegetables before turning around and staring at you. You look up from your sketch and cock your head to the side.

"Change your mind about getting advice?" She clenches her teeth and inhales sharply, then almost-glares at you, pinkish eyes gleaming.

"… No! Okay, you are bothering me! You're creepy and weird and I've been trying to pretend you're not here but that's not working! Look, I'm trying and trying, but it's not working and I'm trying to do something here but you're making it really hard to concentrate and you keep staring at me! And normal people don't just shrug off being wrecked the way you were, and the way you just don't care about being hurt is kind of terrifying, you know? It's … it's …." Her high-speed rant trails off all too quickly and she slowly looks down at the large knife in her hand. The color drains from her face in a most endearing fashion, and the look of horror on her face as she looks back up at you is just so priceless.

"… So earlier, when I asked if you would prefer I left and you said no, you were lying? You said I wouldn't be a problem, but now it is?" She closes her eyes and her whole body starts shaking.

"I … I … please? Cinque wants us to get along, to not be bothered by you. I'm trying, I really am, but it's hard. Please, can you just … go away?" You tilt your head to the side.

"Can I wait in the dining area?" She keens, head thrown back and teeth clenched, and when she looks down at you her eyes are starting to tear up.

"No! No, just stay away from me like you said you would, you crazy little brat!" She starts gesticulating wildly, knife still in hand, not noticing or recognizing the way you freeze. "You're a damn pain, just like Nove says, you've been nothing but trouble for my sisters and me, you don't care about us, you're just … just …." You aren't sure how she realized she went too far, but her face abruptly pales and she steps back against the counter, knife held up in front of her in a pitiful attempt at warding you off. You slip off the stool and take several calculatedly slow steps forward. Wendi slides back along the counter and starts shaking; you turn your head and keep an eye on her for several seconds, then simply turn away and walk through the door into the dining area. Your eyes seize upon the tables arrayed throughout the room … but if you started throwing them in here, the damage wouldn't be able to be covered up before the party tonight.

What do you do?

[ ] Begin … creatively rearranging the dining arrangements.

[ ] Go for a walk.
- [ ] A long walk.

[ ] Break Wendi's arms.
- [ ] Then go for a walk.

[ ] Other?

How rude! Flandre even asked her if it was a problem! :V

[ ] Go for a walk.
- [ ] A long walk.

Is this the sort of walk that results in news coverage? Like "This morning most of 20 people were discovered scattered around the park. Their spines are still unaccounted for."
Or just getting somewhere quiet/different for a while?

[] Break Wendi's arms.
[] Then go for a walk.

Tempting. But I've think we've grown past this.

[X] Go for a walk.

[X] Go for a walk.
-[X] Avoid going outside if it's raining, explore the base

*Sigh* Seems like whoever decided for us to stay here had a bad idea. That's even worse than with Nove.

Edit: Added second line.

"Ahhh … thunderstorms farther north, but they aren't expecting anything heavier than a light rain over here. Shouldn't start for another hour or two." Your mouth twists and you sigh.

Going for walk outside is likely not a good idea with the Rain.

Maybe there's a nice out-of-the-way room full of stuff that won't be missed.

That's just impolite. But we've grown past senseless violence, at least alittle.
Might as well go poke around, see what's what.

If we do stay in the base instead of leaving, there's the possibility that we'll run into, say, Nove while still very irritated and badly hurt her over some comment we'd usually ignore.

Hey, Hey, Hey. We must remember what walks mean for red-dressed vampires. We must be very careful... :V

But seeing as there is no other suitable choice...

[x] Go for a walk.
- [x] Rant about her rudeness while on this walk.
