Dancing Queen
[X] You said it would be at least an hour, and they still have things to do; let them finish up before you get everyone together.

You shake your head and finish the practice piece. No, you should let everyone finish whatever they're doing - relaxing, preparing, or working. You don't have anything in particular that you wanted to do, but now it seems that a task presents itself. You really shouldn't interfere with the kobolds' routine, but you can thank them in another way, and you begin playing again. Not the waltz - the Kettenbrücke, probably, for the bridge - but other tunes. Shepherds' songs, church music, and operatic pieces, all from home, played one after the other without a break. You wonder if the kobolds will come with Ilya when she leaves, or if they'll stay here or go back to the Einzbern estate. Sakuya probably wouldn't mind the help, and kobolds are much more efficient than fairies. And they don't scare as easily, which is always nice. Well, it's not your decision to make, although you could ask Ilya before you leave. She must have brought them - the piano wouldn't have been in the state it is if they'd been here for a decade, after all - but she may not be the one they actually work for. On the other hand, kobolds are remarkably capable creatures, and if Ilya gets ready to leave, you don't doubt that they can tag along if they want to, and if Ilya wants to bring them along, she may ask you instead.

You continue playing for an hour and a half, putting the kobolds' efforts to good use, but eventually you wind down the last song and finish playing. You could have kept going until someone came in to check on you, but that would be irresponsible. Nevertheless, enthusiastic applause comes from the doorway as you get up from the bench, and you see Satsuki standing there. Oh, dear … you hope the kobolds don't mind.

"Flandre-sama, that was amazing!" She rushes up to you, smiling in awe, and you bow your head appreciatively.

"I've had a lot of practice. Is something wrong?" She blinks, slightly confused, then blushes and shakes her head.

"Um, no - I mean, Illyasviel-san asked me to see if you needed any help or anything, but you were playing when I got here and I didn't want to disturb you." You nod and walk into the hall. Satsuki hurries in front of you to guide you to where Ilya is.

"What were you doing before that? Keeping watch over the castle again?"

"No … um, Illyasviel-san wanted me to tell her about my life before I became a vampire." She sounds nervous or unhappy about it and you frown.

"You did tell her, right?" Satsuki shies away at the sharpness of your voice and you shake your head. "She had a very sheltered life, and what was normal for you would be new, possibly incomprehensible, to her." She nods hesitantly.

"I did tell her about it, and she did seem interested and kept asking questions. It was … it's just that it was a little strange." She falls silent after that, but it doesn't take long to reach the study where Ilya and Tohsaka are waiting.

"Alright, if everyone's ready, we can have the competition now," you announce as you walk in the door. Sella is the only one who seems apprehensive - Tohsaka looks eager and Ilya is excited. A shame you can't dance with her, but then who would judge?

"How long is this going to take?" You shrug at Tohsaka as Leysritt carefully stands and, with Sella's help, picks up Ilya and cradles her gently. It's a bit worrying to you, in case Leysritt stumbles, but as long as she keeps herself focused it seems she can move without issue.

"Maybe half an hour, if we drag it out? I was thinking three to five dance periods with short breaks between each, and at the end Ilya decides who she thinks is the winner." Tohsaka nods and Archer appears behind her. "Oh, I almost forgot -"

"I heard, I heard. Seems like it'll be interesting." You grin at Ershin as Deis's voice emanates from the empty space above its helmet.

"Yay! Deis and Ershin are going to watch, too!" You skip to the junction and wrap yourself around the armor, hugging it with arms and wings, and a gust of wind tousles your hair as you release your grip. Tohsaka sighs and her Servant shakes his head, and Ilya smiles proudly. "Come on, come on!" Leysritt sits on one of the wall-benches as Tohsaka and Archer take up their positions on the floor. Satsuki and Ershin sit by her as well, keeping her and Ilya company, and you snap your fingers. They're going to be out anyway, after all. "What should I do with the other two clones?"" Ilya frowns for a moment as one clone flies to the piano and begins warming it up. It plays as well as you do, and while it dances as well, too, it feels more proper to have the real you dancing. And it'll probably make Sella feel better, too.

"Hmm … you mean, should you have them dancing as well, so the floor isn't quite so empty?" You nod and Ilya closes her eyes. "Sure, why not? You don't mind, do you, Rin?" The mage shrugs.

"Whatever works." You snort at her lackadaisical response but Ilya just smiles.

"Please, if you could have them form a third pair that would be nice." You curtsy and hurry over to Sella to get ready. You can tell she's nervous and uncomfortable so you smile reassuringly.

"Relax, Sella. Nothing bad is going to happen." That doesn't seem to help, but before you can continue the music starts. Sella stiffens and you whisper, "Relax." After a few seconds of introduction, it's time to begin the dance.

Your clones, of course, spin off perfectly, each knowing precisely where and when and how to move. Tohsaka and Archer start off rather well, although the Master is obviously unsuited for her role. Sella, meanwhile, moves almost as clumsily as her twin, and it takes almost half the music for her to relax enough to not be a complete embarrassment. She looks like she knows it, too, as her face is bright red. When the music finishes, you and your clones turn to face Ilya - you have to drag Sella to face her as well - and you all curtsy politely. Sella manages a bow that isn't too out of sync with your own gesture. After a short rest, the piano begins again with The Blue Danube, and you take a minor joy in watching Archer and Tohsaka fumble slightly with the different music. Sella does much better than before, although she still moves stiffly and her movements poorly complement your own. Again, you finish with a curtsy, although Tohsaka and Archer keep up with you this time. The third piece turns out to be Valses Sentimentales, causing another disruption on Tohsaka's part as she gets used to the music. Still, for their first real 'dance,' they do quite well. As the music comes to a close and you turn for another round of curtsies, applause echoes through the room. Sella tries to stand upright but you keep a firm grip on her arm to hold her in place. All three pairs of dancers stay on the floor, waiting for Ilya's pronouncement, but she waves for you to come closer, and you, Sella, Tohsaka, and Archer approach the bench.

"First, Flan, I would like to thank you for having your clones dance as well. They provided valuable insight as to how you were supposed to dance." You curtsy primly and she smiles. "However, I don't need any more time to decide on a winner - Rin and Archer." Satsuki pouts but you simply smile and clap your hands as Tohsaka stares at Ilya. "Neither pair danced perfectly, of course, but I think that your team showed greater coordination and degrees of closeness. Sella, you in particular need to work on loosening up! You're too rigid and stiff, and it made your partner work harder than she had to." Sella bows meekly as Ilya wags her finger, scolding her.

"Congratulations, Tohsaka, Archer." You curtsy and Tohsaka gives you an embarrassed look. Hmm … maybe if you do this again, you can dance with her and Archer can dance with Sella? Wouldn't that be fun! Archer simply nods, acknowledging your praise.

"Er, well … of course we would have won! Your partner was nearly half again as tall as you." You give her a look and she looks away. Suspicious ….

"Shall we give the winning team a prize? Maybe some special alone time in the bath?" Tohsaka turns bright red and glares at Deis, and somehow gets even redder as Ershin begins laughing. Her shoulders bunch up, but Ilya stops the explosion by clearing her throat and looking disapprovingly at Deis. "Alright, alright. I'm sorry, Tohssaka." Apparently unwilling to trust her voice, Tohsaka simply nods, and Deis shrugs before disappearing. Well, now that the competition is done with … maybe you should get ready to visit the Grail.

DM Note: The roll was for who won the competition, so @Stormgear rest easy. And if it feels like the update sort of slams into a brick wall at the end … well, I think so too. I think I'm bad at transitioning. And a little sleep-deprived right now. :) But this is basically last call before the plot moves on.

The tsun is weak to praise, just as Flan is weak to sun
It's been bothering me all day. Were you trying to make a "sun-dere" pun or is it one of those things you don't notice at first?

Also, I need to investigate the concept of sundere vampires.

[X] Final preparations and go to the Grail Cavern.

"Well, fun-and-games time is over, I suppose. Shall we prepare for the main course for tonight?" Satsuki looks at you, momentarily confused, but when she sees Ilya's grimace realization dawns and she clenches her fists nervously.

"And that's my good mood gone," Tohsaka grumbles, and you grin toothily at her. She sighs and shakes her head.

"Yes, I think we should." Ilya reaches out for you to take her and looks back at Leysritt after you float back. "Thank you, Leys. You go get some rest now, okay?" The maid nods and Sella walks up to help her stand. Sella glances back and Ilya nods. "Well, shall we go back up to the study?" Tohsaka leads the way and Satsuki and Ershin follow behind you. Satsuki nervously stations herself by the door once you reach the study and Ershin stands next to her. You set Ilya in an overstuffed chair and hop in next to her, letting her sit crosswise on your lap.

"So, who wants to start?" Tohsaka sighs and grabs a sheet of paper from the desk.

"Here. You understand it, right?" You grimace at her handwriting. Second Magic, Zelretch, opens holes to parallel worlds – so not what Patchouli and Remilia have been doing, apparently – and lets her draw on them to restore her magic ….

"So how powerful an attack can you make?" She rubs her chin.

"Well, it would be on par with some Noble Phantasms, probably. Not as good, not as focused, but if you remember Saber's attack against Sakura, something at least that powerful. And I'd be able to keep it up almost constantly." You nod and keep reading. Where Rider's Master has a supply of mana she can't exhaust, Tohsaka has one that is – in theory, at least – infinite. If Tohsaka is right, then any contest between the two would come down to each combatant's ability to keep going. It's almost a shame she couldn't make it … and then she holds up an ugly silvery dagger, irregular and crudely-made. "And this is what it looks like." Ilya nods.

"That's not the real thing, of course," Deis says. "But apparently that's what the real thing is supposed to look like." Tohsaka smiles at you.

"Oh? You don't like it very much?" You snort and shake your head.

"It's ugly." Her smile vanishes and she looks curiously at the blade before shrugging.

"Well, not everything needs to be frilly and pretty. If it gets the job done, it'll get used even if it's ugly." Tohsaka shrugs again. You rest your chin on Ilya's head and she makes a token effort to shake you off before leaning back against you.

"I tried looking into the Grail cavern to see what I would need to do. I was able to get in, but the farther in I went the blurrier and darker it got. I don't think I got a third of the way in before it became impossible to see anything. So … I tried finding something I would definitely know and be able to trace." She holds out a slender gold bracelet for you. It's too large for you to wear, though … you cluck your tongue and swiftly undo your ribbon, then tie it around the bracelet. Tohsaka shakes her head and you studiously ignore her. Ilya smiles sadly and leans against you again. "I hope that works. It should, since I can transfer my sight to it, but …." There's no way to be sure until you try.

"Can you communicate with me through it?"

"Not very well. The link she made with it should let her push magic into it, but – well, you probably won't notice unless she puts in enough energy to make it break. So it's pretty much an emergency warning system, and if the cavern does block her connection to it, she won't be able to do even that much." Ilya nods at Tohsaka's explanation and you give her a hug.

"Well, I should be going," you say without letting go of Ilya. "Do you want to stay here or should I take you down to the workroom?" She hesitates before nodding slightly.

"The workroom, please." You form another caravan heading down again, and Ilya checks the view from the bracelet. You nuzzle her cheek again and Deis nods.

"We'll take care of them, don't worry." You curtsy.

"Thank you, Deis. And you help, too, Satsuki. Take care of Ilya." She swallows nervously and nods.

"If you can … please, don't kill her." Tohsaka doesn't look at you and simply brushes past you to sit at one of the tables.

"Good luck, Flan." You smile and wave at Ilya. Archer is back on the castle roof and gives you a measured look as he continues his rounds. Well, as long as Tohsaka keeps him here, everything should fine. If he follows you, however, you're not sure you trust him not to put an arrow in you if the opportunity presents itself.

A commotion at the temple draws your attention and you float invisibly over the compound. The monks are all outside, and a couple of them look hurt … and there's a sealing circle with a pile of rotten, undulating flesh moaning within. Is it something they tried to bring in, or did something attack them? Well, nothing you can do about it, not without getting Arcueid's attention. And whatever it is, the monks seem to have it under control, anyway. You fly on without another glance, only dropping your invisibility once you're inside the tunnel. Like usual, it's warm and comforting inside, although it doesn't feel quite right. You hop and skip through the tunnel, not bothering with a light source and just moving along quickly. And then you're finally at the cavern itself.

It's bright, now, and you fly up to the level of the cliff to get a good look around. The magic circle is certainly doing something, and a massive obelisk rising from it seems to be the focus of the energy. Perhaps it's the focus of a wish? Or maybe that's what Ilya is after, the source of her Third Magic. Well, whatever. As you glide forward and land on the edge of the cliff you finally pay attention to the girl standing, waiting, attended by a company of shadow giants. You make a show of looking around, even turning your back and looking down the cliff.

"What are you doing?" You turn around at the question and shrug.

"Oh, I was just wondering where the rest of your giants were. These aren't anywhere near enough to beat me, you know." You grin and she swallows nervously, but she's controlling her trembling well.

"Why? You're a monster – I'm a monster, too! We … we should work together!" You sneer at her and she recoils.

"Me, work with you? Ha! Putting aside the fact that you're incompetent, weak, a coward, barely fit to be a scullery maid – you hurt Ilya. You hit my friend and tried to make her unhappy. I don't like it when things like that happen, Master of Rider." She trembles, but now it's with anger as well as fear.

"I don't care about her! Senpai is mine! What about my happiness? No one ever cared about how I felt except -!" You lunge forward and slap her, then throw her to the ground and hold Laevateinn pointing at her face.

"You see, Master of Rider, I don't care about your happiness. As you said, I'm a monster, and I live by different rules than humans. What you do and what is done to you – that doesn't matter unless I care about you." You grin wickedly. "Hey, you can regenerate, right? Can you tell me what it's like to be burned by my Laevateinn? How it feels to have your eyes pop in an instant? Does it feel like a fever, or is it over to quickly to feel anything?" She starts breathing heavily and you laugh before swinging your gift onto your shoulder and hopping off her. You take a few steps toward the obelisk. "Of course, your death isn't really required. Can we use this? This Grail?" You turn back to look at her and she blinks, staring uncomprehendingly.

"Wh-what? I … I don't …?" You sigh.

"You didn't correct me. You knew what I was talking about. You are the Master of Rider, the thing bearing the name Matou Sakura. Whatever the shadow-thing is, it doesn't control you, hasn't broken your mind and taken over. So I'll be frank. The Grail is supposed to be used to make a wish. Can that still happen? Or do I need to beat you catatonic first?" She stares at you, and a smile grows on her face.

"You … you're scared! You wouldn't be talking unle-!" You lunge at her as she sits up and slam Laevateinn into her arm. She shrieks in pain and the shadow giants begin moving, but you grab her face, thumb pressed sharply against her right eye and claws digging into the side of her head.

"I'm not particularly patient, Master of Rider. Will you cooperate, or should I simply butcher you until the others get here and can study the Grail themselves?" She whimpers disgustingly, but it's the flash of light from behind you that makes you shove her back to the ground. The shadow-giants cluster around her as the shining pegasus slams into you, tries to trample you, but you had that moment of warning, and your claws find purchase on its white coat – enough purchase to clamber around its chest and over its wing to grab Rider and drag her from her mount. You slam her masked head into the ground as her animal turns to face you.

"Rider!" You jam your thumb into the underside of Rider's chin, hooking it around the mandible, and with your other hand on the back of her head, you twist her neck. Not enough to snap it, but enough to show that you could. The shadow-giants undulate aggressively but keep their distance from you.

[X] Kill Rider and continue talking.

Amazing, Monster Diplomacy is working fantastically well on Sakura.

A big part of that is that she is legit terrified of Flan. And for good reason. Flan killed Assassin in straight combat, and gibbed Saber Alter. Sakura has no more protectors worth a damn, save Rider.

But Sakura doesn't know we can't gib her in this room, like we did Saber. And we can't let that on.

Unfortunately, Rider might actually deduce that we're sorta bluffing on a number of counts. If Rider reassures Sakura in some way that they might win, or try to expose our bluffs, that makes this much harder. So Rider needs to be silenced, and well...killing is pretty silencing.

This is kind of depressing, but....when you get down to it Sakura is an abuse victim pushed past her breaking point. It took Rin abandoning a killing blow and taking one herself, plus Shirou, to convince Sakura that people care about her and that she should reject All The Evils Of The World.

Flan can't do any of that.

She can convince Sakura she's the bigger monster though, and that if Sakura doesn't cooperate she'll die. Dark Sakura will believe the worst in people. Flan being awful fits in her worldview.

So...it kinda feels like we might be able to bring Sakura in line just by terrifying her that much. And holy shit is Flan doing a good job being scary here.

[X] Kill Rider and continue talking.

Damn, I know that Flan is strong and powerful but full powered Flan without annoying injuries holding her back is terrifyingly powerful to the point that she manhandled Rider along with her NP like some sort of insect.

Anyone who see this for the first time will piss their pant seeing Flan doing that the a Servant when it should be other way around.

It should be noted that Rider want to save Sakura from being a monster, were scary enough to convince Sakura to give it up because in the end, all her power (seem's) pointless against us.

[x] Let Rider go and continue talking.
-[x] Toss her aside, make it clear your power gap is such that you don't NEED to be concerned.

I want to note that killing Rider will fill the Grail, which means Angra Mainyu doesn't need Sakura anymore.

Just to clarify this, Rider did not make an attacking charge like she did against Saber - too unwilling to risk harming Sakura.

[X] Let Rider go and continue talking.

Killing Rider would be good to eliminate outside interference but it could fill up the Grail and make things a little too explosive.

I...don't think so? There'll still be two Servants left. Gilgamesh means there'll be six Servants in the Grail right now, and you need seven for the full powered wish.

Technically I suppose with the right vessel the mud can come out. That happened in UBW, and Gilgamesh, Saber, and Archer were all still alive. Hell the ritual was underway while Sasaki was still hanging on. But Rider, Berserker, and Archer are all alive here right now, so technically the conditions from UBW have already been fulfilled.

If anything, the more Servants go in the Grail, the more Sakura loses her ability to function as a person and not as a human, like Ilya. Sakura is just very resilient in that regard.
