[X] Go see Deis and talk to her about the situation.
You stretch, arching your back, and hop to your feet. "Well, is there anything you wanted to ask me?" Satsuki stares out over the lawn for a moment, thinking, then shakes her head.
"No, not right now. I mean … well, there's all sorts of things I think I should ask, but with everything that's going on right now, it's probably better if I don't give myself more things to think about." She smiles self-deprecatingly and you shake your head.
"Then I'll leave you to your thoughts." She jumps to her feet and bows, smiling nervously, and you nod your head before turning away. The yard by the garage is ravaged as well, although not quite so badly as in the front, and it's easier to ignore as you drift down to the door. You slip inside to find the light coming from the ceiling - starspots of magic. Ershin is still sitting where it had been, but now the Church woman's weapon, Seven, is leaning against it. Before you can come to a decision about whether or not to leave them in peace, however, Deis appears and waves at you.
"You're looking a lot better than the last time I saw you," she says. You stick your tongue out and smile as you come to rest on one of the piles of scrap.
"I was just taking a nap. Am I interrupting?" You gesture at the weapon and Deis shakes her head.
"No, no, we were just talking. We've somehow come across someone even lonelier than I was before meeting you, and we're in similar circumstances, if not quite the same, so I thought I'd reach out to her a bit." Ershin eases the weapon down and sets it across its legs.
"Aww. Deis, you're making a new friend!" She rolls her eyes and you giggle.
"That's not the case, Flan - we're too different, and I'm not sure she particularly likes me, I'm just acceptable enough to talk to. … Well, you could be right, but I don't understand her well enough to know how she feels about me." She sighs and shakes her head. "Anyway, you sure you're okay? Illyasviel said you got into a fight in the rain."
"Yup. Rider's Master took over Saber, and she ambushed us on the way back from meeting with Arcueid. I fought her normally for a bit, to get her away from Ilya, but she was too much of a threat to keep fighting in the rain, so I got a little … final." You wiggle your left hand and Deis nods somberly. "So I guess I wanted to let you know about the situation as it stands and see if you had any thoughts before we start planning things out with everyone." She nods and gestures for you to continue. "So … I suppose the first thing to bring up would be that Archer, at least, is … not exactly trustworthy, I think. We talked for a bit when -" You break off as Deis nods.
"Yes, we know. We, ah, listened in." Well, that simplifies some things … and you can't really blame them for not bringing it up, considering what happened. "Rin said she'd keep a handle on him until we made a formal agreement dissolving our truce, so he should be safe enough, even if we do follow his plan to tie up the Shadow until he can shoot it. She seemed a little … part of it was preoccupation, and maybe concern, but I think she learned something important from that conversation."
"Okay, so Archer can be trusted for now. Then … Arcueid is still going to be a problem, and I think she's even more upset with me now, but the terms haven't changed. As long as I don't fight in the city or the temple, it shouldn't be a problem. Which takes us to the shadow-thing and Rider's Master."
"Why don't you just call it the Shadow like the rest of us?" You scowl at the interruption.
"Because that implies a level of legitimacy that I'm not inclined to grant it. It might be the shadow of something, but without knowing what that something is, calling it a proper title is bad form. Might as well call it the Hex or the Grail, because those are just as likely to be correct. No need to categorize everything. Anyway." You frown, collecting your thoughts, and Deis waits patiently, a slightly amused expression on her face. "It's been hurt, and it's just lost its Servant, so - especially if Rider's Master is influencing it - it's probably scared. If the matter were a simple one of just killing it, I could probably go in there and deal with it. But if I do that, there's the chance that it'll come here after you all, and between the power difference and Ilya and Leysritt's disabilities, I'm not sure you'd be able to get way unless you started running early."
"On the other hand, if we go there in a group, we're going into its territory and whatever other protections it has, like those giants from when it attacked. Of course … do you think it would be possible to negotiate with it or her?" Your mouth twists wryly.
"It's crossed my mind. We are in the position of strength, and negotiation is more likely to get access to the Grail … but Rider's Master is still a Master, too, so she'd be negotiating against herself in that case. If she doesn't know what will happen if the shadow-thing gets more powerful, we might be able to convince her to separate from it in order to save Emiya from the Cleaners, but that relies on her believing us. And on separating her from it being possible, which may not be possible." Deis nods sympathetically and stretches across your lap, ignoring your scowl.
"Yes, that does rather require some information we don't have. Especially with how her grandfather linked her to it, even if it's possible we may not be capable of 'fixing' her without killing her, crippling her, or destroying the Grail. And the people who might be able to do that are either probably incapable of coming to help in a meaningful timeframe or are hostile to us. Quite a problem, my fancy-winged friend, isn't it?" You sigh and nod glumly. Deis looks at you interestedly.
"Okay, so assume we beat the shadow-thing and deal with Archer. Maybe Ilya can use the Grail to fix herself and give you a body, maybe she can't … but the local organizations are still angry, and given that their negotiator was sent back to them in a bag, they're probably going to bring everything they have to clear their enemies out from here. Even whole, even with Berserker and her servants, I don't think Ilya can beat them. I can't beat a whole country, not without being able to control when and where engagements take place or by abusing my power. So she can't stay here. And if she isn't whole, I don't trust the Einzberns to take care of her - even if she is, I don't trust them, but if she's healed and has Berserker, she should be able to make them listen to her."
"If you're worried about her being safe, why not invite her along?" You take out the two rods, one white and one black, and stare at them.
"I did, before she got hurt. She was scared, Deis, because she knew how this world worked and her place in it, but in other worlds she could lose Berserker. And if she doesn't get healed, how can I drag her along on an adventure? … I mean, it's not like I don't want to take her home, don't want you to see Gensokyo, but if I go back then I'll have to go back to Mid-Childa and finish my contract there, and that'll take a few months. So I won't be able to be with her or you, won't be able to help or just be there for you …."
"Well, what do you think is the right choice?" You sigh.
"If I knew that, I wouldn't be having trouble making a decision. It's just … I'm stuck between two wants, and if I'm pretty sure I know what taking one path brings, I know that if I take it I'm always going to wonder what would have happened if I'd taken the other. I have to look at the two wants I have and figure out which is more important to me, whether I'd rather take the surer thing or the risk." You put the rods away and slump unhappily. "If I could ensure that Ilya would be safe here I'd be able to go without worrying, but …." A gentle breeze swirls about your head, tousling your hair, and Deis grins.
"I suppose that's what you get for trying to be responsible, though. If you were less caring, more irresponsible, you wouldn't have to worry about what happens to Illyasviel - or to me, I guess." Except that's part of what you're trying to fix. If you can be more responsible, control yourself better, you won't cause as much trouble for Remilia. Deis's grin fades and she looks at you, curious and concerned. You shake your head.
"No, I'm fine. I just agree with you about the responsibility bit, and I kind of wish it wasn't that way." She laughs.
"So does everyone, Flan! Normal people want good things without having to work for them, want things to go their way without having to be responsible for those good things happening. Why do you think people get so hung up on things like wishes and miracles? It's because you get a benefit - sometimes a huge benefit - for a specific and usually minor effort." You nod and, after a moment of examination, poke Deis's illusion in the stomach. She gives you a look and you poke her side before giving up.
