[X] Go talk to Archer.
-[X] 'Cleaners' that he mention in the past.
--[X] Why do you have grudge against Emiya?
---[X] Does he have any thoughts on how to beat the shadow and its host? Maybe a way to undo whatever Zouken did to her.
You nod to yourself and walk over to the window. There's still one person who might have a useful perspective, after all. You open the window and step out, flying up to look around the roof from above … but you don't see Archer. Scowling, you float across the roof in case he's hidden by a tower or reverse slope, but you still can't find him. Has he finished his vigil, gone to look from somewhere else, or is he simply avoiding you? A sigh comes from below you.
"I'm right here." You look down to see him pacing along the edge of the roof, looking out at the forest, and drop down to float alongside him.
"Hmm. You don't mind some company while you watch, do you?" He gives you a meaningful glance and you giggle as your clones slip out and dart to good vantage points. "Well then, why don't you come sit down and we'll chat? They'll keep a good watch while you're away from your post, and if anyone gets upset, tell them I threatened to bite your thumbs off." He sighs dramatically.
"Rather a difficult deal to refuse. I suppose it's in the best interests of everyone if I accept." Even so, he keeps walking until you reach the corner of the castle and leaps onto the tower. He sits down, leaning comfortably against the tower and grinning confidently. "So, what does the mighty vampire wish of this humble Servant?" You snort and pick out your own spot, sitting primly above a projecting window. "Actually … before we start, may I make an offer? You are obviously here to pick my brain instead of wanting to have a chat about unrelated subjects, so for each question of yours I answer, I will ask a question of my own. If you prefer to not answer, you will lessen the penalty you choose to inflict upon Rin and myself to a degree commensurate to the question you refused to answer. Is that agreeable?" You consider him carefully; in a way, the more questions you ask, the better it is for him, because he can then either learn more about you or he can ask something you don't want to answer and so give you less cause to really hurt Tohsaka … of course, as she pointed out, that only matters so long as you're still allies. You shrug with a grin.
"I suppose that is fair, Archer. I get to go first, of course." He bows his head and makes a gracious, sweeping motion with his hand. "Then the first thing I want to ask you about are those 'cleaners' you mentioned - what are they, and are they any fun to fight?" His expression turns dour and he looks away.
"You would ask about something like that …." He sighs and looks at the rooftop for a while before continuing. "They exist to end threats to humanity. If there is a truly survival-ending threat, they step in and take care of it … and everything else in the area. Anything that is in the area, could be tainted or have a connection that would allow that threat to survive. And they are always just enough." You tilt your head and he sighs. "If you were targeted, enough of them would be sent to ensure that you died, but not so much as to be complete overkill. It's a balancing act, one that eliminates its targets at minimum cost to itself." He falls silent for a moment and you study his carefully-neutral expression. "Is that enough of an answer for you?"
"Hmm … were I a speculating vampire, I'd say that you used to be either someone who fought against these cleaners, or who was a part of their organization but didn't approve of it." He raises an eyebrow and you smile. "You emphasized that they use 'just enough' force to resolve the issue, and you're apparently a Hero. That means that either you fought - and died - against them, and you wish that they hadn't sent 'just enough' but had sent too many for you to fight, so your end was glorious instead of simply … ended. Or you were a part of their group, but you don't like that they send 'just enough' and wish they would send more than necessary so that fewer of your comrades lost their lives. Or perhaps I'm off the mark a bit? Well, it doesn't matter." You laugh quietly. Given that he's encountered something like the shadow-thing before and knows that these 'cleaners' will be sent against it, it's probably a bit more likely that he was a member rather than an opponent, but it doesn't really matter. "Perhaps I'll revisit it, but I think that's enough of an explanation for now. It would be a grand fight, to be sure, but it would be the last fight, and there's nowhere to run?" Of course, you have access to a way out, and you doubt that whatever group sends these 'cleaners' can follow you out. You gesture for Archer to ask his question.
"I was under the impression that you had some … issues you needed to work off. Stress to relieve, if you will. And Rin was under the impression that you would be gone for a while, yet you came back remarkably quickly. Why?" You stare at him; he gets the chance to ask you a good question and that's what he decides on? You sigh; the mortal mind works in mysterious ways.
"I came back because my business was finished. Oh, I could have gone on for longer, had more fun, but the main issue had been resolved. I don't like being caged, Archer, which is what Arcueid was being used to do to me. However, she specified this city and the temple, so my little jaunt is nothing for her to be concerned about - but it is a statement to those who directed her. That was a mere taste of what I am capable of doing to their precious cities, and they spend effort containing me here, where I have done almost nothing. It was a message, and now they can back down or they can make a mistake. On the other hand, here is where the shadow-thing is going to attack, so I need to be here to help Ilya." He scoffs.
"And Rin, of course." You smile, baring your teeth, but he isn't fazed. "Still, while I'm sure they appreciate your concern, it is probably unnecessary. The Shadow will be busy consolidating itself and its position, especially after having absorbed Saber. It will almost certainly stay passive until tomorrow night." That may or may not be true, but it would explain why the three mages are busy trying to make a sword instead of bolstering the castle's defenses. Still, you're sure you made the right decision.
"Be that as it may, the answer is still the same - I came back because I was finished with my business and considered this place more important." He spreads his arms in defeat and you quickly follow up with your next question. "Why do you have a grudge against Emiya?" He glowers at you.
"Because he's an idiot." You wait expectantly but he refuses to elaborate on the excessively bitter remark.
"There has to be more to it than that. Your Master is an idiot, too, but you don't have a grudge against her." He barks out a laugh.
"Ha! Then let me put it to you this way: you dislike Rin for reasons you consider important but that most people consider trivial, and I dislike him for much the same." You glare at him, hands almost clenched into claws, but he simply matches you with a fierce stare. But it's not worth antagonizing him that much, so you eventually huff and look away. "… If that's enough of an answer, my I see your weapon again? The black rod you used?" You frown at him and he shrugs, his previous irritation seemingly forgotten. "I saw it when they brought you in, but I'd like a closer look, if you don't mind." Maybe he thinks he recognizes it? If so, he's sadly mistaken … but if that's not it, why would he want to see it? You think about it, but - especially if he's already seen it - you can't come up with a reason to hide it. You're hardly shy about using it in battle, after all! The only oddity is that he's asking to see it … but considering his first question was about why you came back 'early,' it's probably just his strange behavior again. Eventually you shrug and take out your sister's gift to you. It is, of course, still unblemished, the twisted metal still unmarred by cut or dent. A wonderful gift from your loving sister, your precious Laevateinn. After a few moments of study, Archer bows his head in thanks and you put Laevateinn away.
"Well, then, on to real business, I suppose. This shadow-thing and its host - how do you propose to deal with them? Do you think it is possible to sever whatever connection there is between them, or otherwise undo what the old Matou has done?" He is of the opinion that it is something that will bring those cleaners out, after all, and that is apparently a death sentence. He looks up at the sky as he thinks.
"… Well, killing Sakura should be sufficient to remove the threat, although I understand that that might be somewhat difficult by now. Her Servant won't allow it if she can help it, and regardless of whether Sakura is willing to go through with it or desires it, the Shadow will probably attempt to preserve her life until it no longer needs her. So, presuming we could locate Sakura, my plan would be to send the entity most likely to survive prolonged combat against the thing while the rest of the group sneaks in; once it's vulnerable, a concentrated strike should eliminate it. If that doesn't work, we probably can't do anything about it." You nod to yourself as you consider the plan.
"Straightforward and direct; I would be playing the role of distraction, I assume? And what of separating Rider's Master from the shadow-thing?"
"Yes, it is simple, and it suits my philosophy quite well - strike only when a killing blow can be assured, don't kill meaninglessly, and avoid meaningless battles. As for saving Sakura … I don't know. Perhaps it could be done, but I have no idea how to go about it. And if her death prevents meaningless deaths, I can live with that. Better to take the sure path than risk complete failure." You look at him carefully; his expression is certainly composed, but his tone of voice isn't quite so calm. Perhaps, like his Master, he would rather she not die? He smirks confidently at you. "If you are ready, then my question to you would be … what is your greatest weakness?" You raise an eyebrow at the Servant - asking that right after that bit about striking only when a killing blow is certain isn't exactly reassuring. Especially not in the context of his plan for defeating the shadow-thing. Then again, like his Master, he's probably quite aware that the penalty is fairly meaningless, so it's not like you would really lose much by refusing to answer ….
