You nod to yourself and walk over to the window. There's still one person who might have a useful perspective, after all. You open the window and step out, flying up to look around the roof from above … but you don't see Archer. Scowling, you float across the roof in case he's hidden by a tower or reverse slope, but you still can't find him. Has he finished his vigil, gone to look from somewhere else, or is he simply avoiding you? A sigh comes from below you.

"I'm right here." You look down to see him pacing along the edge of the roof, looking out at the forest, and drop down to float alongside him.

"Hmm. You don't mind some company while you watch, do you?" He gives you a meaningful glance and you giggle as your clones slip out and dart to good vantage points. "Well then, why don't you come sit down and we'll chat? They'll keep a good watch while you're away from your post, and if anyone gets upset, tell them I threatened to bite your thumbs off." He sighs dramatically.

"Rather a difficult deal to refuse. I suppose it's in the best interests of everyone if I accept." Even so, he keeps walking until you reach the corner of the castle and leaps onto the tower. He sits down, leaning comfortably against the tower and grinning confidently. "So, what does the mighty vampire wish of this humble Servant?" You snort and pick out your own spot, sitting primly above a projecting window. "Actually … before we start, may I make an offer? You are obviously here to pick my brain instead of wanting to have a chat about unrelated subjects, so for each question of yours I answer, I will ask a question of my own. If you prefer to not answer, you will lessen the penalty you choose to inflict upon Rin and myself to a degree commensurate to the question you refused to answer. Is that agreeable?" You consider him carefully; in a way, the more questions you ask, the better it is for him, because he can then either learn more about you or he can ask something you don't want to answer and so give you less cause to really hurt Tohsaka … of course, as she pointed out, that only matters so long as you're still allies. You shrug with a grin.

"I suppose that is fair, Archer. I get to go first, of course." He bows his head and makes a gracious, sweeping motion with his hand. "Then the first thing I want to ask you about are those 'cleaners' you mentioned - what are they, and are they any fun to fight?" His expression turns dour and he looks away.

"You would ask about something like that …." He sighs and looks at the rooftop for a while before continuing. "They exist to end threats to humanity. If there is a truly survival-ending threat, they step in and take care of it … and everything else in the area. Anything that is in the area, could be tainted or have a connection that would allow that threat to survive. And they are always just enough." You tilt your head and he sighs. "If you were targeted, enough of them would be sent to ensure that you died, but not so much as to be complete overkill. It's a balancing act, one that eliminates its targets at minimum cost to itself." He falls silent for a moment and you study his carefully-neutral expression. "Is that enough of an answer for you?"

"Hmm … were I a speculating vampire, I'd say that you used to be either someone who fought against these cleaners, or who was a part of their organization but didn't approve of it." He raises an eyebrow and you smile. "You emphasized that they use 'just enough' force to resolve the issue, and you're apparently a Hero. That means that either you fought - and died - against them, and you wish that they hadn't sent 'just enough' but had sent too many for you to fight, so your end was glorious instead of simply … ended. Or you were a part of their group, but you don't like that they send 'just enough' and wish they would send more than necessary so that fewer of your comrades lost their lives. Or perhaps I'm off the mark a bit? Well, it doesn't matter." You laugh quietly. Given that he's encountered something like the shadow-thing before and knows that these 'cleaners' will be sent against it, it's probably a bit more likely that he was a member rather than an opponent, but it doesn't really matter. "Perhaps I'll revisit it, but I think that's enough of an explanation for now. It would be a grand fight, to be sure, but it would be the last fight, and there's nowhere to run?" Of course, you have access to a way out, and you doubt that whatever group sends these 'cleaners' can follow you out. You gesture for Archer to ask his question.

"I was under the impression that you had some … issues you needed to work off. Stress to relieve, if you will. And Rin was under the impression that you would be gone for a while, yet you came back remarkably quickly. Why?" You stare at him; he gets the chance to ask you a good question and that's what he decides on? You sigh; the mortal mind works in mysterious ways.

"I came back because my business was finished. Oh, I could have gone on for longer, had more fun, but the main issue had been resolved. I don't like being caged, Archer, which is what Arcueid was being used to do to me. However, she specified this city and the temple, so my little jaunt is nothing for her to be concerned about - but it is a statement to those who directed her. That was a mere taste of what I am capable of doing to their precious cities, and they spend effort containing me here, where I have done almost nothing. It was a message, and now they can back down or they can make a mistake. On the other hand, here is where the shadow-thing is going to attack, so I need to be here to help Ilya." He scoffs.

"And Rin, of course." You smile, baring your teeth, but he isn't fazed. "Still, while I'm sure they appreciate your concern, it is probably unnecessary. The Shadow will be busy consolidating itself and its position, especially after having absorbed Saber. It will almost certainly stay passive until tomorrow night." That may or may not be true, but it would explain why the three mages are busy trying to make a sword instead of bolstering the castle's defenses. Still, you're sure you made the right decision.

"Be that as it may, the answer is still the same - I came back because I was finished with my business and considered this place more important." He spreads his arms in defeat and you quickly follow up with your next question. "Why do you have a grudge against Emiya?" He glowers at you.

"Because he's an idiot." You wait expectantly but he refuses to elaborate on the excessively bitter remark.

"There has to be more to it than that. Your Master is an idiot, too, but you don't have a grudge against her." He barks out a laugh.

"Ha! Then let me put it to you this way: you dislike Rin for reasons you consider important but that most people consider trivial, and I dislike him for much the same." You glare at him, hands almost clenched into claws, but he simply matches you with a fierce stare. But it's not worth antagonizing him that much, so you eventually huff and look away. "… If that's enough of an answer, my I see your weapon again? The black rod you used?" You frown at him and he shrugs, his previous irritation seemingly forgotten. "I saw it when they brought you in, but I'd like a closer look, if you don't mind." Maybe he thinks he recognizes it? If so, he's sadly mistaken … but if that's not it, why would he want to see it? You think about it, but - especially if he's already seen it - you can't come up with a reason to hide it. You're hardly shy about using it in battle, after all! The only oddity is that he's asking to see it … but considering his first question was about why you came back 'early,' it's probably just his strange behavior again. Eventually you shrug and take out your sister's gift to you. It is, of course, still unblemished, the twisted metal still unmarred by cut or dent. A wonderful gift from your loving sister, your precious Laevateinn. After a few moments of study, Archer bows his head in thanks and you put Laevateinn away.

"Well, then, on to real business, I suppose. This shadow-thing and its host - how do you propose to deal with them? Do you think it is possible to sever whatever connection there is between them, or otherwise undo what the old Matou has done?" He is of the opinion that it is something that will bring those cleaners out, after all, and that is apparently a death sentence. He looks up at the sky as he thinks.

"… Well, killing Sakura should be sufficient to remove the threat, although I understand that that might be somewhat difficult by now. Her Servant won't allow it if she can help it, and regardless of whether Sakura is willing to go through with it or desires it, the Shadow will probably attempt to preserve her life until it no longer needs her. So, presuming we could locate Sakura, my plan would be to send the entity most likely to survive prolonged combat against the thing while the rest of the group sneaks in; once it's vulnerable, a concentrated strike should eliminate it. If that doesn't work, we probably can't do anything about it." You nod to yourself as you consider the plan.

"Straightforward and direct; I would be playing the role of distraction, I assume? And what of separating Rider's Master from the shadow-thing?"

"Yes, it is simple, and it suits my philosophy quite well - strike only when a killing blow can be assured, don't kill meaninglessly, and avoid meaningless battles. As for saving Sakura … I don't know. Perhaps it could be done, but I have no idea how to go about it. And if her death prevents meaningless deaths, I can live with that. Better to take the sure path than risk complete failure." You look at him carefully; his expression is certainly composed, but his tone of voice isn't quite so calm. Perhaps, like his Master, he would rather she not die? He smirks confidently at you. "If you are ready, then my question to you would be … what is your greatest weakness?" You raise an eyebrow at the Servant - asking that right after that bit about striking only when a killing blow is certain isn't exactly reassuring. Especially not in the context of his plan for defeating the shadow-thing. Then again, like his Master, he's probably quite aware that the penalty is fairly meaningless, so it's not like you would really lose much by refusing to answer ….

Huh. I'm surprised Archer didn't think of Rule Breaker. We might have to get him to come up with something similar- I'm sure there's a sword out there that can sever a connection like he one Sakura has with Angra Mainyu.

Huh. I'm surprised Archer didn't think of Rule Breaker.
Well, we know that he didn't spend almost the entirety of UBW backstabbing (in one case literally) people he was either allied with or actually cared about, so I'm sure he was perfectly truthful about the things he said and is most definitely not planning on nuking Flan with a Caladbolg II while she's in the middle of a fight with the Shadow.

*cough*

Well it's pretty clear that Archer is aiming to kill Flandre and gathering up all the tools he can to do so effectively and efficiently. The question here is does Flandre think it's worthwhile to go ahead and reveal her weakness in this conversation. It's really interesting how in this quest so far Flandre really is at her most vulnerable and restricted when she's in a conversation in a civil situation.

It's technically true and that's the best kind of true.

Not sure what the reasoning is behind telling him about our weakness when he obviously doesn't have any good will towards us. Nor are the questions that we have asked him proportional to the value of asking for our greatest weakness. Also I feel like we aren't planning on ever using the punishment that we promised on Tohsaka which makes me question why we said we would punish her later, when Archer would be less likely to try to kill Flandre if we had forgiven the transgression.

On the other hand I have no idea what to vote for :(.

[x] Answer 'lack of worldliness.'
-[X] Ask him about what he thinks the Shadow is, and share your experience when it tried to eat you to help figure it out.

He asked us what our greatest weakness was! That's a very open ended question. We don't need to say what our actual PHYSICAL weakness is, just... You know, a personality flaw would do. A lack of worldliness IS why Flan is doing all this travel, after all.

Though is that her greatest weakness? Maybe not from the perspective of a human, but rather one of a vampire.

Maybe 'Lack of patience' is more accurate for Flan, though.

We kinda lose our steam a bit after we saw Rin at her lowest and after that, she barely act antagonizing toward us. I mean, if Rin act like this from the beginning she might have been Flan's friend by now.

Arrogance, because even if he were able to put it to use, Flan can still kill him almost instantly. Or, a measure of trust - Servants seem to take great stock in protecting themselves, so by telling the weakness Flan demonstrates that she is willing to give him an 'advantage' against her. In between the two lies confidence; Flan trusts that Archer won't take advantage of her weakness ... and even if he tries, she isn't going to let him beat her.

Probably some more that could be thought of, but those are simple ones.

Though is that her greatest weakness? Maybe not from the perspective of a human, but rather one of a vampire.
Or youkai in general - worldliness can be defined as practical experience in the 'real world,' and most youkai are comfortably secluded within their own little worlds. This is important because the biggest advantage humans have over youkai is their creativity and imagination, and a youkai that remains cooped up is 'safe,' but also unable to take advantage of humanity's new ideas and inventions. That ... not exactly stagnation, but close, is a huge weakness for youkai, not only because they can't take advantage of the new ideas, but also because they can't protect themselves from them. It's a conceptual weakness rather than a literal physical weakness, but even more than just a personality flaw, it is something that exists.

Also, just as a heads-up, there's something I have to do ... either tomorrow or Sunday. >.> And if it's tomorrow (and I'm not sure when I'll find out when it is), then the update will probably be late. I might sneak it in early, depending on how close the votes are (looks at three-way tie).

And well, if it's not by total surprise Flan COULD blow everything up.
Or exit dimension in an emergency

Yes, it's fine. Unless I've said that votes will be closed by a specific time or I've said that votes are locked, they can be posted. :) And that's definitely something that could be considered Flan's biggest weakness.

You shift your position above the window. What Archer asked for was your greatest weakness, not the most immediately lethal, or the easiest to take advantage of. It's true that your vulnerability to sea and sun is great, but those are mere physical threats, only a danger if others are there to take advantage of them. In another way, Remilia is your greatest weakness - your sister, the only one close to you, who has never abandoned you. If she did, you would crumble and break. Perhaps your impatience …. "If you would rather not answer, I quite understand," Archer says, and you glare balefully at his smug expression. No, impatience isn't your weakness …. Eventually you settle yourself to respond.

"I suppose my greatest weakness is my lack of worldliness." He raises an eyebrow, and you nod at his skeptical expression. "Yes, experience - not in fighting, nor the arts of nobility, but in the world of humanity. Of the variety of humans, of their thoughts and ideas and ideals, of what has truly changed over the period of my existence. Understand that like nearly all youkai, I am not particularly imaginative; we may improve upon, refine and extend to their fullest the ideas of humans, but coming up with what is truly new … such things as cars would never have been created by youkai, nor advanced weaponry. The very concepts of such things are too foreign to the ways our minds work." Archer nods in understanding.

"And what you cannot conceive of you cannot defend against. Yet … you do not seem particularly confused by the trappings of the modern world, nor by its customs." You spread your arms and flap your wings.

"I am no mere fairy or beast youkai, Archer; however, there is truth in your words. It is not, I believe, the technology and craftsmanship that has affected me the most since the beginning of my sojourn. Rather, the ideas and thoughts of those around me seem to have had the most influence. The survival of Tohsaka and of Rider's Master is the greatest indication of that." You cast your memory back - in Homura's kitchen, when you hurt Agito for merely being rude … yet you have let Tohsaka live through her repeated insults, and Rider's Master through her assault on Ilya. How things have changed …. You tilt your head at Archer's irritated expression.

"… No, it's nothing." He exhales and looks across the castle toward your clones. "Well, did you have any other questions, or can I get back to my duties now?" You giggle.

"Quite right! The shadow-thing - you're familiar with the general nature of it, but what do you suppose it is?" He frowns at you.

"You don't think your friend's guess is correct? That it's a mass of negative human emotions gathered into a gigantic curse?" You rub the side of your head and shrug.

"Maybe, but … I've been in a hex, and that was … invigorating. Unthreatening. When the shadow-thing attacked me, it was just … pathetic. Wasted, feeble, human hates and curses, attempts at violence and punishment, but … still such a failure. It was so pathetic that I had to kill it for its presumption, to tear it to pieces. And it feared me, Archer. And had you not struck at us, I should have consumed such of its essence as could not flee." You fix him with a glare and he sighs.

"So it's an intelligent hex. We know it's using Sakura as its host, and apparently has been for some time, so maybe that was actually her emotions, rather than the hex having any intelligence." You scowl and cross your arms … but Servant and Hero though he may be, he's no magician, so you probably shouldn't expect much from him.

"… You've encountered something like this before. Did you learn anything about that thing's provenance? Can they be related? Surely you don't expect me to believe you know absolutely nothing about it?" He simply shrugs in response.

"Something of the Shadow's threat and power isn't something to be analyzed or 'contained,' only destroyed." Your scowl darkens … but if he really doesn't know …. "If you really want to figure out what it is, you should probably discuss it with Illyasviel - given its connection to the Grail, she's the one most likely to have any information or insights on it." You stare at him, wondering just what he's concealing … but eventually you have to relax and nod.

"Alright, I suppose that's true. So, what question do you have for me?" He looks at you thoughtfully.

"Hmm … why do you dislike Sakura so much? I didn't think you had interacted much with her."

"She hurt Ilya." He seems confused by the statement, so you shrug and walk him through the logic. "Ilya is someone I care about, and Rider's Master hurt her. Therefore, I do not like Rider's Master. … Is there a confusing concept in there somewhere?" His expression returns to its usual neutrality.

"No. Continue, then." You wonder what's so important about your attitude Rider's Master - although it could be about your attitude toward Ilya - but file it away for later thought. Instead you lean forward and stare at Archer.

"Why did you want to see Laevateinn?" He shrugs nonchalantly.

"It interests me. As I recall, you were able to harm Berserker with it, and you recently demonstrated an ability to create fire with it." You stare at him skeptically; something makes you certain he isn't being particularly truthful. "Did you make it yourself?" You laugh at the notion.

"No, it was a gift from my sister." Immediately his shoulders loosen slightly. Hmm … could he have been trying to gauge your capabilities by what it was capable of? Or did he simply not want to possibly deal with more like it?

"It really is quite beautifully made. Your sister must be quite the artist," he says, and you smile and bow politely. "If you have no further remarks … where are you from, precisely? Some of the statements you've made, some things you are familiar with, and some things you haven't said or aren't familiar with, make it quite clear that you aren't from here." His stare is quite serious, and you hear the unspoken question of what you're doing here. You sit up straight as you consider what to tell him.
