"Working Together"
[X] Work together with Oriko and Homura.
- [X] Make note, in a calm tone (as much as we are able atm) that we NEED to get one who DARED to even try something like
that to us, and while we may give them (Oriko and Homu, that is) SOME time for their questions and alike, in the end ruffian must
suffer properly and we won't tolerate any interference on that part.
- [X] Inform Homura about the apparent plot to kill her dead.

"Fine," Homura says, exasperated. "So, if she's in here …." The three girls sweep their lights around the room, and Kirika walks past the cubby you're resting in. After a moment, you pull yourself out of the cubby and drop to the desk below. Three beams of light converge on you, but only Homura's stays after they identify you. You really don't feel like working with them, but it does offer the best chance of success; killing everything you can get your hands on might make you feel better, but you might not be able to stop, and you aren't guaranteed to get Karen, and you're simply poorly-equipped to search for someone who doesn't want to be found. You glance at Homura, then shift back into your natural form and take out a dress. Homura coughs expressively, and the other two turn back to you.

"Wha-? But …?" Oriko frowns as she stares at you, and you glower at the light directed in your eyes.

"Umm? F-Flandre?" You close your eyes as you dress yourself, focusing your attention inward. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, yes. Why?" She seems to relax, probably because you're trying hard to not let any emotion seep through.
"When you opened the box, everything got really dark, and Headless made me hide in my room. When it went back to normal, I came out, but then you went to sleep, and Headless is locked in another room. I can hear her screaming, sometimes." You pause for a second, then continue getting ready.
"… Hm. I can't come in right now, not without making everything worse, but …," you focus even more intently, keeping yourself just outside the range when you'd retreat into your mind, and you barely hear an echoing cry of rage. "She sounds more angry than anything else. Keep an eye on her, and if breaks out and tries attacking you, yank me in there. I'll come by when I have a moment and see if I can get her out, okay?"
"Thank you! … Um, take care!"

You shake your head, clearing it, and hop off the desk when you finish getting ready. The three magicians are watching you, and you face Homura, keeping Oriko and Kirika in sight. "Homura, I don't suppose you have discovered the identity or whereabouts of Karen? I have business with her, you understand." The black-haired girl exhales softly as you speak. Before she can say anything, however, Oriko interrupts.

"Yes, she made you angry, I'm sure that is far more important than the threat to life and safety that she is to us. Your 'business' can wait, Flandre Scarlet." You turn to face Oriko and smile without menace. If you had your sister's control, you could radiate enough power to force her to fall to her feet in worship; unfortunately, the only way for you to do that is by radiating enough power to make stone bleed, and you'd probably kill her. You'll have to do this with words.

"Oh, but you are so very wrong, Oriko. You see, I have been insulted, not simply angered. This chit of a girl, this Karen, assaulted my person in a cowardly manner, and I simply will not accept that." You take a few steps toward the pale-haired girl, and your eyes narrow slightly, menacingly, while your smile remains fixed. Your voice, soft and sibilant, echoes from the far corners of the room. "Moreover, you claim that child to be a threat to your life and safety - while you stand within simple striking distance of me? You will accept the primacy of my desires over your own feeble requests, or I will kill you, and you will work to locate her, or I will see to it that your 'life and safety' are dangerously threatened." Oriko trembles angrily, and Kirika transforms but maintains her position behind the other girl. Perhaps she thinks her ability will save them; you wish she would try, but she isn't foolish enough to move first.

"You thi-!"

"Enough." Homura cuts Oriko off, and the two stare at each other for a moment. Oriko turns away. "Flandre, I understand that you're … upset about what happened. But the situation is more complicated for us; Oriko has been trying to find Karen, based on the description Lutecia passed to me, but she keeps getting headaches and her Soul Gem corrupts far more quickly than it should be, so Karen seems to be fighting back. And Madoka and Mami both had attacks that nearly led them becoming Witches within minutes of each other. You can see …." She trails off as you spin and float back to the cubbies. You know what she's doing, and you don't particularly care for it. Maybe you should make your feelings on the matter known in a more direct fashion …. You pick up the needle from the cubby where you left it and present it to Homura.

"Do you know what this is? Have you seen anything like it before?" Oriko and Kirika grudgingly walk over to see it, and Homura hands it over, shaking her head.

"I don't know. It seems similar to Grief Seeds in terms of material, but it certainly isn't one. It was in the box?" You frown and stare at her for a moment. "Agito said you all were attacked after you opened the box, and that you left in a rage, trying to find Karen." You stare for a few more seconds, then blink slowly and take the needle from Oriko.

"The box was booby-trapped, and two needles went into my eyes. One struck my mouth. I suppose you could say I was enraged, yes." You stare at the needle for a moment, then step over to Kirika and jab it into the back of her hand before she can react. Even though you withdraw it almost instantly, her eyes twist interestingly and she drops to the floor, shuddering and twitching spasmodically. You watch as Oriko drops beside the girl and tries to lever her over, then Homura pushes past you and shoves her arm underneath the shaking magician. She calms instantly, and when Homura stands up, glaring furiously at you, you can see the Grief Seed in her hand. "Interesting. I wonder why Mami and Madoka were attacked without the use of those, but you received a trapped gift. Hm … Oriko. It seems you are, at least at present, useless to me, so stay here with Kirika until she's finished sulking in whatever passes for self-pity among the damned, then meet with us. Kirika can still be used." She starts, eyes wide, and starts to say something, but you're already turning to walk away. After a few moments, Homura follows you. When you emerge into the open air, you frown at the sky - dawn is perhaps a few hours away. Homura stops next to you.

"That was not the best way to handle them." You shrug.

"They already know I want Kirika dead for my own reasons." Homura frowns down at you, and you shrug again. Then you take a steadying breath. "What happened to Lutecia, Homura?" She hesitates, and you turn your head enough so you can see her through both eyes.

"She's resting at Kyouko's church right now. Her left arm was broken, her stomach cut open, and she'd lost a lot of blood. Mami kept her stable while Junko drove her there so Sayaka could heal her properly." You quiver, furious at Homura and at yourself. You were the one who hurt Lutecia, right? But Agito didn't tell them that, even with the excuse of Karen's attack. Why let them think something else attacked her? You shove the thought down inside and take another breath; trying to think about it now will drive you to distraction or worse … and you can ask her when you go to see Lutecia.

"Homura. You are not one of my favorite people right now. Do you know why?" She frowns as you speak, then swallows nervously, starts to open her mouth, then closes it and tries to think what you mean. "Good. You're at least thinking about it. Hospitality, Homura. Do you understand it? Two guests were injured under your roof. They were injured because someone tried to attack you, and they were injured because you told them to initiate the action that led to their injury. Lutecia was nearly killed; I was insulted; and these happened because someone wanted to kill you." You let that sink in, then look forward and take a step. "I will think about it; the situation is uncommon, and it may be that blaming you is unreasonable. Now; what plans have you and the others come up with to locate Karen? You have had more time than I to consider it, after all." Homura is silent for a long time, but you let her have her moment.

"Nothing that will particularly help. I have one more idea, but … we tried Oriko, and that plan seems to be backfiring; Mami is back at her apartment trying to find places magical girls could hide out; and we could just try to flush her out with Kyouko's girls, but that would be risky." You nod and start walking. "… I'm surprised you haven't simply decided to burn the city down until you find her." You don't bother dignifying that with a response, and after a few minutes Homura frowns at the direction you're taking. "Going to see Lutecia?"

"Mami," you say, shaking your head. "She does have the best relation with the creature you call Kyubey, does she not?"

"And he's probably able to give us assistance. That was the last idea I had come up with, but I dislike working with him, and had hoped to avoid dealing with him." She sounds very unhappy about the prospect.

"… And Oriko told me they'd just left when we reached your building." Kyouko and Yuma are both sitting by Mami, with Kyubey in the green-haired girl's lap, watching you. Mami sighs and frowns at the city map, then looks up at you and Homura as you finish off your cake.

"I see. I'm afraid I haven't come up with any leads, either. I'm sorry … but, Kyubey?" She looks hopefully at the strange creature as it uncurls itself from Yuma's lap and hops onto the table. It gives you a brief glance, then turns to face Kyouko and sits down, tail twitching. Kyouko glares.

"No!" Mami, Kyouko, and Homura all speak at the same time, and the creature twitches its tail again. Kyouko seems both frightened and angry, Mami frightened, and Homura is unreadable. You lean back and examine your fork.

"What did it say?" Mami frowns, then shakes her head.

"Nothing, Flandre." Homura answers you verbally, and Kyubey turns to look at her. You know they're negotiating, you just don't know what they're negotiating with, and it seems no one wants to help you. You get up and put your plate in the kitchen. When you come back, Homura and Kyubey are still staring at each other, Kyouko is glaring at the white-furred beast, and Mami is looking fretfully at the three of them. You pick up Yuma, ignoring the startled squeal, and hop back on the couch. Yuma slides to the side and you lean against her, watching Kyubey.

What do you do?

[ ] Threaten Kyubey if it doesn't help you.

[ ] Threaten to burn down the city and expose magic if it doesn't help you.

[ ] Information trade; in exchange for everything it knows about Karen, including her location until you personally engage her, you offer:
- [ ] Everything you know about Sakura Kyouko and what happened to her.
- [ ] Everything you know about Akemi Homura.
- [ ] Some information about you and where you come from.

[ ] Leave and go see Lutecia.

[ ] Other?

You know I figured Homura had Flandre open the gift because she thought it was odd, suspected a trap, and decided that Flandre made a good discount rogue. Either she's tough enough to take it if it is a trap, or she dies and is no longer a problem. That's a win-win for Homura.

As it turns out though, people tend to be very unhappy with attempted murder. And Homura utterly neglected to consider the hospitality angle in which she's responsible for their well-being.

A bit too used to being able to undo the consequences of time loops, and very unused to consequences following her to future possible loops.

If she ever admits to what I think she did, she's probably going to have to either offer up some massive compensation or be Flandre'd. Messily.

I figure she probably assumed Flan could handle it.

Flan COULD, but that's a concentrated grief spike, I think? It'd have oneshotted any magical girl, except Flan is a youkai and it simply aggravates her monstrous nature.

That is what I meant by, "EIther she's tough enough to take it..."

The point is, Homura pretty much asked one of her guests to poke at what she probably suspected was a trap, instead of suggesting some safer way to dispose or open the trapped gift.

[X] Leave and go see Lutecia.

You stay there for a few minutes, waiting for something to happen. Yuma shifts a couple times, and you're pretty sure she looks at you once or twice, maybe trying to say something. Perhaps you could take the initiative, offer Kyubey some information to trade for Karen's location, or see if he knows what that needle is, but … if they're going to deliberately exclude you from negotiations, they must be pretty confident in their ability to gain something worthwhile.

"Flan?" You raise your eyebrows a little, then narrow your eyes as you focus less on the outside world.
"Headless? Are you okay?" You get an image of the two of them sitting at a table, the younger girl clutching Headless's arm.
"More or less. Need some rest, though, and wanted you to know I'll be out for a while." She yawns and waves, and you smile.
"Alright. Tell me if you need help cleaning up - twelve hands are better than four." Then Headless puts her head down on the table and the image fades into fuzzy blackness. You yawn, stretch, and hop down onto the floor, breaking the silent staring of everyone else. Mami frowns and starts to get up.

"Ah, Scarlet-san, is everything …?" You curtsy.

"Mami Tomoe, thank you again for the cake, and once more most graciously for your efforts in preserving Lutecia's life at a time when I could not." Just because you'd rather be slaughtering a certain black-haired girl is no reason to not be polite, and Mami blushes and bows her head.

"No, it's really fine. I'm very glad I was able to help," she says, and you smile before turning to Homura.

"I'll let you work on things here, then, while I go see to Lutecia. Don't take too long, please, or come empty-handed, or I may have to take you up on your suggestion." To her credit, she doesn't so much as blink, only nods in response and turns back to Kyubey. You wave to Kyouko, who watches you suspiciously, then walk out of the apartment. Closing the door behind you, you leap into the air and fly toward the church. It's still dark enough outside that no one is likely to see you, and you aren't moving fast enough to create any disturbances, so everything is still peaceful when you land in the church courtyard. You hesitate, as both the house and the church have lights on, then enter the church and hurry into the main area. Sayaka is kneeling in one of the pews, but looks up when you come in, and stands when you approach her.

"Hey, Flandre. Are you okay?" She looks concerned, and you nod quickly.

"I'm fine. Where's Lutecia?" Sayaka shakes her head.

"She's asleep right now, but she's fine. In the house, second floor, seco-" She grabs your arm as you turn to leave, and you glare furiously at her. "Second room on the left. Really, are you okay? You don't look good." You take a deep breath before nodding.

"I'm fine." She lets you go and you rush to the connection. You pause at a large mirror on the wall, studying your reflection and trying to figure out why she would be worried about you. Nothing seems odd to you … but then, Mami got some cake for you, but not for anyone else, so maybe Homura is just trying to get people to not irritate you any more than you are already. Shrugging, you take off again, hurrying through the church and the house, up the stairs, turn left - and then turn around, because there's only one room that way. You dart down the hall and stop at the only room with a closed door. Slowly, gently, you open it and peek through. Agito is sitting on a chair next to the bed, where Lutecia is sleeping soundly and peacefully. The fairy puts a finger to her lips but motions you closer anyway, and you move another chair next to hers.

"Are you okay?" You give her a sharp glance, and she raises her hands defensively. "It's just, well, you looked … really, really bad when - when whatever happened, and you were screaming pretty loud. And," she carefully takes out two more needles and holds them out for you to see, "I pulled these out of the ceiling when no one was looking, and since you were right there …. Well, even if they weren't magical they'd hurt pretty bad." You stare at the needles suspiciously, then look up at Agito.

"Yeah, I got hit by three of them. I only have one right now, don't know where the other two are …. What happened?" She sighs and puts the needles away.

"Well, you got hit, and fell, and Lutecia went to try and help, and … well, you hit her away and then tore off down the street. I tried to help Lulu, and we managed to get a healing spell set so I could go get Homura. She seemed to have guessed that something weird happened, but not how bad it was, and they all seemed kind of freaked out about it. We got Lulu here, and Sayaka healed her, and … I've been watching her ever since." You think for a moment - you could ask how she knew where Madoka lived, or when, exactly, she took the needles, because her story seems a bit off to you, but … really, those aren't important.

"… So why didn't anyone know what happened?" She frowns at you, confused, and you scowl at her before turning to stare at Lutecia. "Homura said you told her we were attacked after I opened the box, and that I went to chase the attacker; she didn't know that I was the one who hurt Lutecia." Your voice is quiet, but Agito looks around nervously anyway. "Why is that? You lied to her - them - and I don't know why. Wouldn't things have worked better for you if you'd told them what happened?" She gives you a blank look, then sighs and leans back in her chair, joining you in watching the sleeping magician.

"… Before I say anything, can you tell me why you're asking? Why do you think I kept quiet?" You huff and shake your head.

"I don't know, that's why I'm asking!" She winces at the vehemence of your statement. "Nothing changes - you don't get any hold over me, because I don't care, and my situation isn't helped or hurt, because it's blatantly obvious that the reason I hit Lutecia was because of the trap. It could even be that the trap was designed against unwanted tampering, and it's because I opened it instead of Homura that anyone was hurt, in which case everyone getting worked up over Karen is pointless." Agito stares at you for a moment, eyebrow raised.

"So you don't think anything should be done to her?" You snort in derision.

"Of course she's going to suffer for humiliating me and getting Lutecia hurt," you say, and Agito nods. "I don't like impudent brats insulting me in cowardly fashions, especially without cause. Now, are you going to answer my question?" You turn a baleful eye on the fairy, and she swallows and nods.

"So … there's a couple things. First is that, for all that you and I don't always see eye to eye, I trust you more than some of these kids. Homura is … odd, and hard to get a real handle on, and Mami seems a few steps from some kind of breakdown. And the Kyouko girl you brought with you seems like she wants you removed from the situation. I'm sure you can handle any of them - you can probably handle all three! - but not having to handle them would work out better for all of us." You consider that for a moment. Self-preservation, taking you at your word over the other magicians. And those magicians can still be useful, so long as they haven't been antagonized into hostility. It makes sense. "You're blunt, direct, and resort to far too much violence too quickly for me to feel really comfortable with you sometimes, but I understand you and your position much better." She sighs.

"The second thing … well, you said something about getting a hold over you, and that's pretty far off. Almost the exact opposite. I know I just said that I'm not always comfortable around you, but … well Lulu and I wouldn't have asked about your life, and listened to you for half a day, if we weren't interested in understanding you better. We -" she sighs and gives you a helpless expression, "well, Lutecia, at least, does want to be your friend. I'm … a little nervous about the whole thing, and I'm too worried about how everything is going to work out. But you're trying, and she's trying, so I'll try, too. I didn't tell anyone the truth because I thought it would help you, not out of any expectation of a response in kind, or because I wanted something. I was … just trying to be a friend …." She trails off, puzzled, as you shake your head.

"Now you're just confusing yourself. There are two main points to friendship - working together to solve a common problem, and shoring up each other's weak points. Like with Patchouli and my sister: they had a common goal when they first met, and worked together, and later when we moved to Gensokyo, which is much better for all of us than staying on Earth was, Patchouli provided the magical expertise and Remilia supplied the power. And Patchouli's a weak-bodied magician, so her staying with us gives her a secure location to do research and whatnot, while Remilia got someone who could teach me more effectively than she could." You pause for a moment and look up at the ceiling, thinking, then look down to see Agito staring at you.

"That's … that's not a friendship at all! Tha-" She leans back as your glance turns to a furious glare.

"Are you calling my sister a liar?"

"No! No, not that," she waves her hands back and forth in front of her, as if trying to ward you off. "What I meant was … at least with humans, friendship has an awful lot to do with emotional support and affection. It's not a, a give-and-take relationship like you're describing. That sounds like a business deal." You draw your knees up to your chin as you consider her nervous explanation.

"Hmm … maybe. I mean, I know what a business deal is and how it works, and I've seen some, but Remilia was very explicit when she said they were friends, not partners or anything like that. I guess they could have some part they keep hidden from me …." You give Agito a wry grin. "I'm a lot like you, you know? I don't really like Patchouli a whole lot, and I get the feeling she doesn't like me, but because Remilia likes her, I don't make a fuss. And because Lutecia likes me, you don't want to raise a fuss." She stares at you, mouth working silently.

"N-no! That - I mean - I -" You lean over and pat her on the head with a smile as she sputters in confusion. She slumps and stares at you with a twisted expression, and you shake your head patronizingly.

"There, there, it's okay." You slide out of the chair and pull the fairy into your arms, then jump up and drift over the bed. You gently set Agito down on the bed before drifting back to the chair. "You've been up for a long time now without rest, so you're tired and not thinking clearly. Get some sleep - either Homura is going to bring me information on Karen, or I'm going to have to go find her myself, and I don't want to leave Lutecia alone when that happens, so that means you have to be ready to take care of her. 'Kay?" You smile charmingly at her, and she stares uncomprehendingly for a moment before nodding dumbly and slipping under the blanket. You start humming the tune to the lullaby you sang before, but she's asleep before you finish the first verse. Shaking your head, you move her chair back against the wall and put yours in the corner, where you can see anyone coming in through the door or the window without being seen first. You make yourself comfortable to wait and watch as the sky begins to brighten.

You sit there for more than five hours until Lutecia wakes up. Sayaka poked her head in a couple times, either trying to talk to you or just bringing food, but you ignored her and she left peacefully. Homura never came or sent word. But for the moment, that doesn't matter. Lutecia's eyes blink open, and she stares at the ceiling for a moment before looking around the room, and when she sees you, she smiles softly and lifts her arm in a small wave. You hesitantly make your way to the bedside.

"Are you okay?" Her smile grows at your question, and she nods.

"I'm fine, Flandre." But her voice is odd, different from usual, and you frown worriedly.

"Really? Are you really okay?" Her smile fades and she looks down at her arm.

"… They hurt. My arm and stomach." You start to get up, to get Sayaka, but she grabs you with her injured left arm, and you stop. She shakes her head. "It's okay, Flandre. Really." She lets you go and looks over at the still-sleeping Agito.

I find it very strange that Flandre somehow doesn't know what 'real' friendships are, considering she has one with Headless (and, to a lesser extent, Yellow).
If Flan really did think that way, there'd be no reason to keep Headless around. Not only does she not really contribute anything for Flandre, but Headless' presence is also actively detrimental to her relationship with Remilia.

Flan does consider Headless a friend, but she's also aware that most people don't have entities other than themselves running around in their heads, so she doesn't think her relationship with Headless would be considered a 'real' friendship. Her real knowledge of interpersonal relationships comes mostly from Remilia's relationships - with her, with Patchouli, and with the various servants they've had.

In an agentic friendship, both parties look to each other for help in achieving practical goals in their personal and professional lives. Agentic friends may help with completing projects, studying for an exam, or with moving a friend from dwelling to dwelling. They value sharing time together, but only when they have time available to help each other. These relationships typically do not include the sharing of emotions or personal information.
Flan's point of view is that Remilia and Patchouli's friendship is more or less of this form, and that this is a 'normal' friendship. Remilia's assistance to Patchouli is more of a long-term/continuous help, so Patchouli is willing to set aside her own work if Remilia asks for a short-term project. Her own relationship with Headless resembles this to a degree - Headless makes her more efficient in combat, she lets Headless feel things more viscerally.

Headless and Flan both enjoy similar activities, Headless doesn't actively harm Flan and (generally) isn't a problem for others, as well. She's also an aid in combat - Flan gets a bit focused when she and Headless share the wheel, as evidenced by Spilling Blood. And Remilia, for her part, is still worried about the potential side-effects of (trying to) take out Headless. Even after four hundred years, she isn't sure what Headless is, and even though there are parties in Gensokyo who might be able to help, she's wary of involving them in case something goes wrong. And Flan and Remilia would still have grown somewhat apart even if Headless didn't exist, because of Remilia's actions.

To be clear, Flandre understands the concepts of companionship, affection, trust, and so forth that form the basis of friendship - she just doesn't apply them as a friendship. Similarly, if someone presented her with the concept that 'friends are like family, except you can choose them,' she would understand how one is 'supposed' to act in a friendship. It's simply that her view of what a 'friendship' is got skewed because for the longest time neither she nor Remilia had any friends, and Flan had her relationship with Headless that she wasn't sure was a real friendship, and then Remilia met Patchouli and told Flan that they were friends, so that's what she's basing her idea of what a friendship is supposed to be like on.

...
I think. Flan's a little weird in the head, sometimes, you know?

Makes sense to me; if the only example she has (aside from the people in her head which even she knows is unusual) is Remilia, why wouldn't she base her definition off of her?

tried to help Lulu, and we managed to get a healing spell set so I could go get Homura. She seemed to have guessed that something weird happened, but not how bad it was, and they all seemed kind of freaked out about it.
So Homura expected something, but not a blunt attack like that one.
Well...basically to Agito, it's like seeing herself cranked to 11.

"… They hurt. My arm and stomach." You start to get up, to get Sayaka, but she grabs you with her injured left arm, and you stop. She shakes her head. "It's okay, Flandre. Really." She lets you go and looks over at the still-sleeping Agito.
She knows some healing magic, so if she says she's okay, she probably is. Lutecia's healing doesn't cost grief anyway, so outside of an emergency, she's better.

Hopefully Sayaka fixed up any internal injuries. Internal bleeding can look a lot less bad than it is.

You bow your head, waiting, then look back up at the magician. "Lutecia?" She turns to you, and you lower your eyes. "I … I'm sorry for hurting you! It's my fault … if I were better, or stronger, or a magician, or faster, you wouldn't have been hurt, wouldn't still hurt. You're only alive because Agito was able to help you, then get more help, and then Mami helped keep you alive, and Junko drove you here, and Sayaka healed you and Kyouko let you stay here and I … I couldn't do anything for you." You hunch a little, keeping yourself in arm's reach of Lutecia. "I'm sorry." You wait like that for several minutes until Lutecia speaks and you look up at her.

"Flandre? Why are you apologizing?" She seems honestly confused, and you curl your wings around your shoulders.

"Because I hurt you, and if something worse happened to you, I'd be breaking my promises to you. I'm supposed to be protecting you, because I'm better at that, and I said we could go and get you to your mother, and if … if you die, then I'm breaking my promises to you, and if you die because I attacked you, it's even worse." Her arm reaches out, and the tips of her fingers tip your chin up so you're looking at her. Her eyes are clear and unaccusing.

"Flandre, it wasn't your fault. Blame Karen, for trapping the box; blame Homura, for asking us to open it; blame Agito, for not being faster than you; blame me, for telling you about Homura's request instead of opening it myself, or for touching you when you weren't in control of yourself." Your head droops again, but Lutecia lets you mope. "I know how strong you are, and it would have been simple for you to harm me irrevocably, but you didn't. And I appreciate that you want to help me find my mother. So don't blame yourself, not when others are just as, if not more, at fault than you." You look up, and a small smile forms on her lips. "Weren't you telling me not to be upset for being fooled by the Doctor, because I had no way to realize he wasn't telling the truth?" Your wings unfurl, almost of their own accord, and you smile back.

"Mm. It's …." You trail off, thinking. Maybe it's not same thing, but the idea is the same … and then you hear something gurgling. Lutecia hunches her shoulders and looks down at her stomach, and you giggle. "Ah, just a moment, then." You retrieve the tray with the covered dishes and set it on the table by the bed, then hand one of the dishes to Lutecia. "Sayaka brought these in earlier, but I thought it would be better for you to sleep as long as you needed, first." She peels the lid off the dish, revealing an apple, an orange, carrots, broccoli, rice, and well-cooked meat. Lutecia smiles lightly and takes the fork you hold out to her. Agito twitches in her sleep, and you keep an eye on her as Lutecia eats; it's not long before she jerks up and looks around worriedly.

"Wh- Lulu!" She almost gets tangled up in the blanket as she tries to turn over and get up, but she freezes when she sees that Lutecia has the dish on her lap. "Oh, good, you're -" She cuts off and blushes brightly as her own stomach growls loudly, and Lutecia giggles. You hand another of the dishes to the red-faced fairy. "Um, thanks." She sheepishly sits back next to Lutecia and opens the dish. She nods approvingly at it, then looks over at Lutecia's dish. "Um, these weren't all supposed to be for you, were they? I can go …." You hold the fork out in front of her.

"Sayaka didn't say anything about them being just for Lutecia, so there isn't going to be a problem," you tell her, and she nods before starting to eat. You wonder if you should start telling them about Gensokyo now, or -

"You look like you want to say something," Agito says, interrupting your thoughts, and you look over to see Lutecia looking at you as well. You shrug noncommittally.

"I was wondering if you wanted me to keep talking about my life, or if you wanted to talk about something else, or …." Your eyes slide to Lutecia's arm and stomach, and your expression fades a little.

"You were about to tell us about Gensokyo, weren't you?" You nod at Agito as she swallows whatever she was chewing on. "Well, go from there." You glance at Lutecia as she nods, then sigh and drag your chair back over to the bed before looking up and figuring out where to start.

"Well … hmm … okay, so Patchouli's the one who did the work - setting up the transition, placing the wards, and all that magic stuff I don't know much about - and Remilia supplied the power. Oh, and I told you about the spell cards and the danmaku game and all that?" They nod, and you smile. "When we first got to Gensokyo, those weren't in effect. That's why Remilia and I got to have fun when we got there, because it was real fighting. There are youkai that are stronger than vampires, and others that are faster, or better magicians, or heal faster, but nothing has all our abilities, so even low-class vampires are stronger than most youkai, and Remilia and I, we can't be matched except by the absolute best youkai out there." You smile wistfully, remembering the power being flung about, Patchouli's spells keeping your vulnerabilities from affecting you and Meiling following in you and your sister's wake. You sigh and shake your head.

"But there were too many youkai who could threaten us, so when they got seriously involved, Remilia called a truce, released all the youkai she'd bound, and negotiated with the powers in Gensokyo for terms, on the basis that it was less costly for everyone if we didn't fight to the death. We ended up not being able to do much ourselves, which … didn't really affect me that much, but I think it bothered Remilia a lot. At some point, the Hakurei shrine started working on the spell card system, and when that was introduced, Remilia threw her support behind it, and I think she made some sort of deal to be the first one to try how it works." You grin, and Lutecia leans forward a little, interested. "See, most youkai need to sustain themselves at least partly through fear, imposing the 'legend' of their kind on humans and feeding off of it. Vampires don't have that weakness, but it's something that most youkai have to do. But since Gensokyo is a fairly small, sealed territory, attacking enough humans to impose the legend of even a handful of youkai species would either destroy the humans or force them to wage a war of extermination. The Spell Card Rules avoid that.

"They revolve around 'Incidents' caused by youkai, which are of varying severity, which substitute in some fashion for imposing the legend. And humans solve them after they've had some time to work, allowing the youkai to feed off the fear. For example, Remilia's Incident came to be called the 'Scarlet Mist Incident,' because she tried to cover Gensokyo in a red mist thick enough to block out the sun - which would let her walk around during the day without needing to use a parasol."

"And you, right?" You look at Agito. "The Mist would have let you go outside too, right?" You stare at her for a moment, then look at the wall and shrug.

"I don't know. Remilia never said anything about me being able to go out. But the reason doesn't matter, because it was nonsense anyway," you continue as Agito growls. "Remilia knows the Mist would have killed off the humans, so she wouldn't have been allowed to keep it going, so the reason she said doesn't matter. Okay?" Agito nods reluctantly, but Lutecia doesn't look at you. "Anyway, Remilia lost to … I don't know whether Reimu or Marisa solved the Incident, actually. They both showed up, I think, and Marisa beat Patchouli, but I'm not sure who went and fought my sister." You giggle. "I got to meet Reimu, though. Remilia kept going out to the shrine, and I wanted to see what was so special about it. But Patchouli … stopped me, and then Reimu and Marisa came to see what was happening. I got to play danmaku with Reimu! She even beat me and made Remilia come home. Aah, but I still haven't been to the shrine."

"And Marisa and Reimu are humans?" Lutecia asks her question so softly it almost doesn't register, then you look up and nod.

"Mm. Marisa Kirisame is a magician, and she's supposed to be … umm. Hm. Probably somewhere between Nanoha and Hayate, if she ever actually used all her power to really fight. Reimu's not as powerful, but she's much more talented, and I'm pretty sure she cheats somehow." Lutecia shakes her head.

"I mean … how can humans compete with you? We … we saw your fight against RF6, and …." You giggle.

"Oh! Mm, didn't I say? Well, the Spell Card Rules. 'Incidents are easily started. Incidents are easily solved.' Even though I'm not supposed to be part of any Incidents, in case … just in case, my Spell Cards still follow the rules, and they're beatable. In a danmaku duel, it doesn't matter if one side is capable of killing the other without effort, you still have to follow the rules, which are designed to allow the 'weaker' side to win. Of course, fights between youkai don't always follow the Rules, especially if there isn't an Incident going on, and humans who are in some areas aren't necessarily safe, because you don't have to accept a danmaku duel, not unless you're involved in an Incident." Agito waves her hand in front of her as Lutecia glances at the third dish for the third time. You glance at Agito.

"Um, what were those pauses about? When Patchouli 'stopped' you, and why you aren't supposed to be part of any Incidents?" You blink owlishly at her, then lean over and grab the third dish from the table and hand it to Lutecia.

"I'm not hungry," you say, and after you push it closer to her, she takes it from you. You aren't quite lying - it's just that you aren't hungry for that, and it won't really help you anyway. You turn back to Agito "Why do you think my sister wouldn't want me to be part of an Incident? You're someone I'm trying to get along with, and think about how easy it's been for you to say something … regrettable. If someone did something like that in a Spell Card match, and I reacted in a similar fashion, it would be … bad." Yes, very bad. Probably somewhere on the 'killed, or at least thrown out of Gensokyo' side of punishment. And it's not like you haven't done that before - though, to be fair, those people were insulting either you or your sister, not simply saying the wrong thing. "… But the Incident after ours was neat. The Princess of Ghosts kept spring from coming! It snowed for a long time, and Remilia and I made snow-forts, threw snowballs … it was a lot of fun." And Headless's sister probably would have loved it. Maybe you'll find a place with snow sometime? "The one after that had the fake moon and unending night, and the one after that was some religious squabble between the Hakurei shrine and some newcomers." You frown at the wall, wondering how much you should tell them about Gensokyo … they won't be there for long even if they do visit, after all ….

"Um, Flandre?" You blink and turn back to Lutecia as Agito frowns into her empty dish. "Would you mind showing me how to play the piano?" Your face starts to light up, but your eyes are drawn to her arm, and you consider it seriously. If her arm is still damaged, she won't be able to play properly, and if it still hurts, it'll be a distraction. She is human, after all ….
