[X] Research Local – Find out what's going on with the cape scene in Brockton Bay
The keyboard at the library clacked as she entered her library card information.
It had actually been a long while since Taylor had last looked into what was going on publicly with the cape scene. Nearly three weeks. With how her power manifested, she surmised that she was uniquely isolated from it. After all, to fight villains she didn't need for them to even see her. Really, she didn't need to see them if she was willing to let the giant entirely off the leash.
There were four things of immediate interest to Taylor that she found within the first five minutes.
The first was that the Empire was in retreat against the ABB. Or at least it seemed that way. They hadn't done any major fights, or none that were known of, in the past two weeks. Meanwhile, Kage had led unpowered members of ABB deeper into what was considered Empire borders, by whatever nebulous metric people used.
The Empire was the longest staying gang in the city. There had never been a time in Taylor's life where the Empire Eighty-Eight didn't exist. Hell, it predated the Protectorate. The gang had weathered it's first leader's death. It had survived a visit from the Nine. They had been there when the Butcher began it's infamy and still been there when the Teeth had been forced out. It was a Brockton Bay institution for better or worse. It was worse. It was always the worst of the two. There was no better when it came to Neo-Nazis.
So to hear that they were in retreat without putting up any kind of visible resistance was beyond strange. Their supporters online were as loud as ever and yet the actions of their capes said otherwise.
It made Taylor feel uncomfortable, more so than she usually felt when it came to a gang of super-powered skinheads.
Then there were the two fights that she'd had the giant involved in.
A solid block of the city had been wrecked due to the fight of her giant against Squealer's big rig. There had been more than a hundred injuries and several missing people.
She felt queasy at that.
Would Skidmark and Squealer have left without harming anyone if she hadn't sent the giant in? She didn't know.
Next was the Merchant ambush on Battery; no one had seen Squealer since. Admittedly, that had only been a few days ago…
Battery seemed to be fine.
That was where the good news ended.
Mush had died.
Reading those words made Taylor's stomach drop.
It wasn't that Taylor felt bad over him from an individual standpoint. Merchants were literal drug peddlers. She had seen some of their dealers at Winslow. Plus that ambush had clearly been meant to kill Battery. He was a literal supervillain.
No, rather, it was the fact that the giant had probably had something to do with his death. Probably. She didn't exactly know for certain. She could feel bile rising at the notion that she had killed someone.
That whole moral quandary was thrown to the back at the fourth tidbit of information.
Either The Simurgh or Leviathan were due to attack most likely this week.
Much like the Empire, it had been something that had been going on for as long as Taylor had been alive. Though they had gotten worse over time; she knew when she had been born there was only a singular one. She vaguely remembered when Ziz had first appeared. The entity had appeared as an angel only to effectively destroy Switzerland without any opposition.
As long as she could remember, the Endbringer sirens had been a staple of being alive.
Her earliest memory of them was maybe when she was four and her mom had been grading some papers. She was giving something to her mom, maybe a drawing or some such thing, and her mom had looked at her with a smile.
That smile turned into a rictus of fear at the first shrill tone from the siren. Seeing her mom go from unstoppable in her four year old mind to hugging her as tightly as she could, trembling in fear was seared into her mind.
...if she was being honest, she couldn't think why one would attack Brockton Bay- the city wasn't exactly important in anything except maybe regional medical tourism. Then again, Ziz had destroyed Madison, Wisconsin…
There was one difference, however, compared to all other times before, at least for Taylor.
Taylor had the giant now.
Which meant she would have a choice to make.
Monday morning brought Taylor to school as it always did.
For the first time in a few weeks she was actually nervous going to school. A feeling that had been a constant companion for the vast majority of her highschool career.
That feeling was numbed as she walked through the halls and spied Joanna reading a book on economics. A book that Taylor was pretty sure was not assigned by the school. "Hey Joanna. Freakonomics?"
"Mmhm. A touch...drivelish, but it has some interesting knowledge." Joanna explained. "How did it go? You look glowing."
Aaaand that was pretty much the exact reason she was feeling nervous. Pink tinged her cheeks. A Nikki-related reason. "It was nice. We're gonna have a second one."
"Ah good. Better than it ending in flames at least." Joanna hummed. "Staying away from Empire territory are you?"
"Yeah. Boardwalk." It was still sinking in that she was going to have to avoid a lot of the city when she was with Nikki.
It still hadn't quite clicked yet.
"Good. Most of the Empire's men probably will just leer at you two. But why take the chance?" Joanna asked as she flipped a page. "Do you have protection?"
"I have keychain mace?" Taylor's first thought was on the giant, but considering no one but her knew about it, it was a fleeting thought. "Nikki was packing." Her face scrunched at the memory. "I think Dad was gonna give her a shovel talk but, uh, that didn't happen."
Joanna slowly laid her book on the table. "Packing? Like that shitty Russian pistol she had at the range? She carried it with her?"
"No? It looked different. Yeah, in her purse."
Joanna closed her book. "Not to speak ill of your future wife or whatever, but do you think she's smuggling guns? It feels like something she could do."
The ravenette coughed at Nikki being called her future wife after a single measly date, that being said... "I'm, like, ninety percent sure her dad is part of the Mob. So… maybe?"
"What makes you think that?" Joanna asked, leaning forward as a single eyebrow raised.
"Okay, a lot of things; for one is the amount of guns." She started ticking fingers off, "I don't know much about them but some of them were definitely illegal. Then there is the fact that her dad could afford to send her and her grandma over here from Russia but can't leave himself? Suspicious." Another finger. "She's clearly wealthy which means its not that he can't afford to leave." Another finger. "Whenever she talks about Russia, she always couches it in terms of surviving there or danger. Physical stuff not starving kind. Which shouldn't be as much an issue if they got wealthy the more normal way, I think."
Taylor stared at the four fingers she had extended. "There are other things that she's said that make me think it's that…" Like mentioning that her mother and siblings had died in probably violent ways. She looked back up at Joanna. "She got within the same room as the Butcher and thought it was too much like her homeland. What else could it be?"
Joanna hummed. "Wow, dating the Don's daughter. Bold move Taylor." her lip quirked up in a smirk. "Looking to marry 'into the family' as the Italians say?"
Taylor wrinkled her nose at that. "Hah. No. It's just a theory." Her head drooped. "I'm going on dates with a maybe-mob princess, what even is my life?"
"Could be worse." Joanna noted dryly as she picked her book back up. "Could be dating Lung's daughter." She snorted "Or Kaiser's." The blonde started to chuckle, which turned into a belly laugh that caused her to snort.
"That's horrible." Taylor laughed despite herself as a thought came to her. "Y'know what'd be worse? If they dated each other."
Joanna snorted again, having to put her book down to cover her mouth to stop from bursting out laughing at the notion. "S-Shut up!" Joanna laughed.
"Nope." Taylor was proud to actually make her friend laugh. It sounded simple but it was a good feeling. It had been a long time. "What would be worse; Kaiser's daughter dating Lung's or Skidmark's?"
Joanna thumped her head against the table as she curled up from the laughter, the pain only dimmed her laugh for a second before she was giggling and snorting, trying to hold back her guffaws.
She was still giggling when the bell rang two minutes later.

Hey got a chapter out within two weeks! Good job me. Bare minimal done!
Joanna's life has been forever altered by this conversation ^_^
Taylor is definitely repressing something that will come back later.
We ingress closer to one of the two common events in most Worm stories. Amusingly for me, what I'm more interested in isn't the event (not to say that I'm uninterested in it...) but what comes after. Taylor will have to make a decision and honestly I don't know which of the choices I'll be more excited about.
Hehe.
Also happy one year anniversary!
Hope everyone has enjoyed this; it's been fun to write!
