Every step that Taylor took towards the growing chaos couldn't help but make her think that this was an increasingly bad idea.
There weren't many steps to take, mind you, more just not fleeing from the encroaching darkness.
Different sensations warred in her; that feeling of something like a weight dropping down her stomach. The thrum of anticipation that built in her blood, a low drumbeat that quickened with every passing moment, a jittery feeling that felt like it consumed her.
Yet what she could only focus on, was a feeling of almost vicious promise, a premonition of violence that Taylor knew without a doubt in her mind was not of her own.
That it was something the giant felt, or perhaps knew?
It was strange, a remote part of her brain noted that only in times like this, it felt like she had a better sense of the giant, almost a sixth sense for what she thought he was thinking… or perhaps she was just humanizing her power.
Or just distracting herself from the pounding of her heart as she did something that she knew was stupid. A toss up, really.
It didn't take a genius to figure out what was causing the lights to go out once Taylor had gotten far enough; someone was messing with the power grid. Not that she could figure how they were doing that; just that it was happening.
Though she did figure out who the proverbial they were.
Asian Bad Boyz.
It was… strange watching them go to work. Well, as much as Taylor could from behind a newspaper stand. Truly behind, given that there were dozens of guns going off!
The ABB had commandeered a bus, one of those long multi-section ones, and it was rolling slowly through the street, disgorging gangsters and thugs, who ran out seemingly at random to tag or torch buildings, some throwing down wired-tube devices as they advanced before returning back to the bus.
That's not to say that the Empire Eighty-Eight wasn't putting up a resistance, it's just that the ABB was just that more organized. They had clearly planned ahead; what looked like… squads? fire-teams? were marauding ahead of the bus, putting pretty much an end to any organized resistance. As in, people were being executed against the pavement, blood flowing freely onto the road.
As far as Taylor could tell, this was just straight up urban warfare, and she was in the middle of it!
She knew, deep down in her heart of hearts, that the giant would keep her safe from everything, but that couldn't quite overpower the rational side of her that looked at all of this and found it terrifying. The fact she was here went against every single thing she had been taught about safety within Brockton Bay or safety period.
The thing was, what was she supposed to do in this situation? Let the ABB kill what she could only hope to be neo-nazi gangsters? She wasn't that idealistic; a good chance they were just beating down anyone in sight- its why Taylor was pressed as tightly as she could against the kiosk, hands over her ears to try in vain to dull the tumult of violence.
Naturally that's when the scream of metal on metal overpowered everything.
Like an inexorable pull, she looked out from behind her cover, just a quick peak- that sudden urge to look at the cause of something sudden overpowering her caution.
A metallic structure that had not been there ten seconds ago filled a quarter of Taylor's vision, a shadow looming over her.
Smooth with irregular protrusions, none suggesting artificial, more organic than cables, the structure twisted and writhed as it sprung forth, oblong convexities sprouting forth to surround several figures as guns from atop buildings opened fire. The convexities thickened, going down from the main structure, animating in such a way that made Taylor's eyes crawled, creating fluid structures across the road.
A mass of hooks and blades descended, turning two of the ABB members into a red mist in a matter of seconds, as a cloying, choking, consuming smog followed, as some unseen force tossed limbs out in different directions, at least a half dozen people dying in front of Taylor in as many seconds.
What only drew her eyes away from the spectacle was the flash of colours and falling ash as a figure blurred between the capes still on the moving monstrosity.
The figure appeared back on the ground followed in quick succession by explosions as the living metallic entity threshed and bent in on itself, the squeal of its material causing physical pain to Taylor. Fragments of something rained down, one going directly through part of the newstand, pulling a startled scream from her lips.
Fear shot through, ice fractaling through her veins. That could have killed her, right then and there.
She needed to act and act now.
Taylor…
[] ...unleashed the giant, and hunkered down. She couldn't leave without having him next to her to bodyguard her – not without possibly getting shot. Hopefully she wouldn't be injured in the active cape fight she was stuck in the middle of!
[] ...retreated with the giant close by to be summoned; she needed to get out of here and needed to have done that before the capes started going at it. No reason to delay. This wasn't worth probably dying over!
Author's Note: THE ROLLS, THEY HAVE REDEEMED THEMSELVES FROM LAST TIME! VINDICATION!
Sorry… it was… oddly cathartic to see what got rolled this time around.
Taylor seems to have found herself in a bit of a clusterfuck. Escalation, clusterfucks, killing children and suffering. Normal Taylor activities.
I will have you know that QA is very pleased right now. She has many new friends to speak to while Taylor is absolute losing her shit. [SAFEGUARD] has the absolutely best gossip to share… though they seem oddly obsessed with ninjas for some reason? Weird.

Where darkness reigned the world was bathed in monochromatic hues, the only colour remaining being where the moonlight pooled and the firelight flickered. Her nightvision was better than any brand available for purchase, but even it still lacked any colours.
The plan she had devised came to be an overwhelming success. Perhaps the Empire was simply caught off guard by the ABB deploying tactical acumen. Something of which Lung and Oni Lee both lacked when it came to much else than them fighting solo, if that. But more than likely the rumours of them being hunted were far more dependable than previously thought.
They had pushed far into Empire territory, even if it was from one of the weakest points of their border that still spoke ill of their ability to respond to threats- andthis was all just a threat.
There was no other goal of this push. To show the Empire's weakness, to show the ABB's power, to make the little people afraid, and to make the PRT think twice about acting on ABB turf.
Her hand covered the man's mouth, a kunai slit his throat with nary a sound. The men he ran with left him behind, ignorant of the dying man laying in a puddle of crimson. It was the eighth time tonight she had killed.
Sometimes she still had the gall to wonder when she became so numb to it. Or why she had allowed herself to do so.
Kage's attention snapped to the massive metal hinagiku that had sprouted into the street, steel vines pushing the massive alien hana forwards. The blooms stretched out, shielding the Empire's grunts as capes descended from the hana's stem.
"Brunhilde." Kage murmured softly. Truly, a pain in the ass to deal with when one did not have a shaker to counter the girl. Especially when killing the child was not something Kage would do. It was one of the few lines she had not crossed yet, and she held that close to her heart.
Her cloak wrapped around her like a security blanket, hiding her from the world as she moved. Kage tapped her right ear twice, code for the spotters to start calling a retreat. The Empire had brought their powerhouses, or the ABB had simply gone too far into Empire territory. The chaff would not survive their attention.
An obvious observation as Hookwolf, Night and Fog began to tear into the closest clusters of the disposable troops. Oni Lee took the opportunity presented to set his former selves around the dense yellowish fog that allowed Night to access her nightmarish form.
His explosion scattered the dense fog into a low lying mist, leaving Night exposed in her ridiculous high heeled outfit of which several ABB tried to take advantage of and shoot her. Few even succeeded before she popped the pin on her smoke grenade.
Kage tsked as she started to run, tapping her left ear to get a line to Oni Lee. "Distract Krieg, I will disable Brunhilde," she dropped the line after, knowing he would follow the order without hesitation. Which is why she started rushing towards the pulsing metal mutant hana, her steps as silent as a gentle breeze.
She dodged the pests that Brunhilde's power seemed to create as a side effect, and used her Shinobi Shuko to climb the metal bloom up towards the stem as Oni Lee appeared in front of Krieg and Brunhilde who had remained on the unnatural creation.
Then he exploded, because of course that is all he could think of, and the metallic hana bucked and it's metal screeched as it did so. The movement of the hana hindered her, but not enough to prevent her from reaching the target.
Standing atop the stem, both Empire capes focused on retaining their footing as Brunhilde fought to get her creation under control rather than worry about another attack, speaking rapid German to her creation. Krieg's field kept them safe from explosions, clearly.
But, even as the field caused her to feel unnatural drag upon even the simple action of breathing, Kage had no issues retaining her balance. Dark red energy coated her hand, and even slowed, her strike was quick. Even just a gentle tap, her fingertips struck the base of the skull where Brunhilde's spine grew from and the young girl toppled forwards dead to the world.
Krieg cursed in his foreign tongue and began to turn.
But before she could move, Kage witnessed the barrel of an RPG poke its way out of one of the bus's smashed windows and fire at Hookwolf who was climbing a building to get at one of the sniper teams.
The explosive zipped through the air, before Stormtiger swiped it with a stroke of his air, causing the explosive to suddenly rocket upwards, high into the air.
The fighting almost paused as everyone watched the small missile sputter and fall back down to the earth in an arc. Kage threw herself onto the stem and hugged it tightly just before the RPG hit the gas station at the end of the street.
Her ear protection only dulled the sudden roar, and her mask saved her eyes from the blinding light of the fireball. But both did little to save the breath being stolen from her lungs by the massive explosion that left parts of the gas station and the asphalt it had sat on careening in the air to fall back down like meteorites.
For a moment she laid there, trying to get her bre-
For a split moment, a razor's edge in time, Kage felt rain battering her. She heard the waves battering the building she was in. Tasted the salt in the air. Saw four glowing eyes, peering through cracks and into the office building. Sheer hopeless, nameless terror grabbing her heart and attempting to strangle i-
Then the sound hit her.
"░░░▒▒▒▒▓▓▓███████████████!"
Kage looked up from the stem she laid upon, her eyes finding the destroyed bus and the figure responsible with ease, as if they'd been drawn to it. A human figure stretched out to a grotesque degree, filled with muscles like steel wire until it looked almost inflated. Skin like coal, and eyes burning like the fires of hell.
It was the Kyojin, the same one that almost broke one of her ribs before.
The Kyojin turned to face her.
The giant that she sliced the hand off of.
Kage made sure her cloak was engaged and hurriedly dropped off of the stem, sliding along a blossom until she hit the ground in a silent roll.
Not a moment too soon had she left the hana before it was no longer looming over her. A crack followed a second later followed by the sound of shattering metal as shrapnel showered the area around her.
Kage moved, doing her best to dance in-between the sudden and vicious projectiles, only sparing a glance back to where she had been.
The massive metal hinagiku, so large that one could have driven a semi on had been ruptured by the Kyojin- without pause, it's great club relentlessly slammed into the writhing alien plant, opening rents into the facsimile of flora.
Then, with neither grace nor apparent effort the Kyojin reached into the countless rents in the alien flora, grabbed the metal within and tore the steel hana in twain.
It writhed in false agony, it's metallic form slamming into everything around it, even it's own form in a cacophony of screeching. Nothing was safe from it's movements, A power line was torn down, cars were shorn in two, the road suffered great up-heaving rents, and the buildings around the halves were the worst off. Utterly ruined by Brunhilde's power thrashing in it's death throes, sliced, crushed the damage so severe that one building began to sag towards the street.
But the Kyojin ignored the sagging building and the dangerous metal edge of the dying flora. One half of the writhing alien hinagiku was seized by brick-like fingers, the steel cable-like muscles of the Kyojin went taunt as the hinagiku's fight was suppressed. The red inner glow of the Kyojin only grew in it's intensity as it began to crumple the metal of the flow, compacting the alien flora into submission.
It was while it was standing there that Oni Lee appeared followed by a half dozen grenades going off.
The metal the Kyojin held had warped and broken under the concussive heat from Oni Lee's various grenades. Not a drop of blood fell from the Kyojin.
Kage tapped her communicator connected to Oni Lee, giving him orders to distract the Kyojin while the chaff of the ABB retreated. To lead the Kyojin into the Empire, and let them break themselves upon the Kyojin's unyielding body. She was not going to attempt to fight it, she had no death-wish. No for this.
Having seemingly grown bored of it's task, the steel goliath hinagiku it held was carelessly disregarded, with a shattering rumble, the Kyojin disappeared, leaving a crater along with a resounding crack from where it had been.
The only sign of where it had gone was the persistent sounds of combat within the smoke and smog of Night and Fog's forms.
Oni Lee had not been needed after all.
The ABB had succeeded in their goals, taking the Empire to task and humiliating them. They had no need to spend the life of the ABB's gangsters anymore, the bus full of people was already an unacceptable loss.
Kage was not looking forwards to the letters she would have to draft for relatives, a self appointed task as Lung did not care for, but it was something she felt was her burden.
Only half a minute later was Night thrown out of the obscuring fog upwards into the air. She went for one of the grenades on her belt of tools, then a misshapen figure appeared next to her, forty feet in the air having stopped on a dime. In mid-air.
A dim muffled pop.
A flash.
A crash as something heavy hit the ground.
The dust settled revealing it's identity.
It had been flayed; it's dark skin missing, horribly burned the likes of which looked more similar to one of the unfortunate soul's who suffered from one of Lung's more sadistic punishments.
Shining, fractaling blood spewed from it's orifices, it's eyes missing, just gooey masses of flesh, a hole the size of a basketball going right through it's chest and out the other-side, gem like organs glittering as lifeblood leaked from them.
Yet the Kyojin held Night in it's left hand, naked sinew touching her, drenching her black clothing crimson.
It looked like it was on death's door, it's breathing irregular and laboured.
As it tried to stand, one of its knees buckled.
It was as the Kyojin fell to one knee that Hookwolf pounced, hooks and blades, a dervish of the concept of a 'cutting edge'. The mass of blades known as Hookwolf covered the Kyojin, seeking to finish the job Fog and Night had started.
He did not succeed.
When the Kyojin lifted Hookwolf off itself, not a single piece of the cape had pierced it's body, just skittering along it's exposed innards. Blade and hook and bent and been forced into every exposed crack and crevice of the Kyojin's insides.
All of it simply broke when the Empire cape was lifted by the Kyojin in it's disgustingly large hand. With it's right arm extended high, Hookwolf was being held at least two meters off the road.
Without it's skin, Kage could see every musculature from the deltoid down to each individual muscle coating its fingers ripple.
Metal shattered, scattering around the Kyojin.
A man screamed in agony.
Hookwolf hung from the Kyojin's grip, flesh and offal having been pressed from each and every crevice of the Kyojin's hand like a bleeding red paste.
Kage felt a rare sensation of squeamishness take her as stringy gore snapped easily, Hookwolf fell to the ground one way and his feet the other.
The Kyojin's hand fell away, shucking the gore from it's hand loudly, the wet paste remnants of Hookwolf's legs splattering on the ground.
Bones creaked and clicked as it stood up, even from a distance the Kyojin looked to be nine feet tall.
Kage could see the other side of the street through it's chest, the wound it had taken had not healed. The Kyojin simply refused death.
Night held in it's skinned left hand. She wasn't moving.
Claws of air slashed at the Kyojin.
They did nothing.
It moved.
The only reason Stormtiger lived past the next five seconds was that he seemed to be able to alter some aspect of the Kyojin from hitting him. That didn't stop the Kyojin from using Night as a bludgeoning weapon and smacking him across the street into a heap.
The entity turned.
Two messy pits of ruined corroded flesh looked directly at Kage, the glowing red in their depths somehow still searing into her vision.
It took a step.
Kage felt her heart clench in her chest.
Another step-
Then it was gone, fizzling out of reality like a sparkler.
Kage remained where she was, legs refusing to move as if they'd been carved from solid stone.
Something moved, in the corner of her eyes a shifting figure half crouched behind a newspaper stand that was no longer fit to hold newspapers.
It was that girl. The same girl from the bus. The tall thin one with long wavy hair.
The girl, and the Kyojin soon after.
Curious.

Author's Note: Hi Kage!
So, this was about half written by my wondrous editor, KindredVoid. Praise may be directed to them.
Speaking of praise, QA is now trying to influence you, dear voter, with positive enforcement. [Praise].
The only combat roll that was done was for where the rocket was going to land. Poor gas station.
As you can tell, the giant did much a violence, many broken humans.
Please vote and discuss as per always… man, is this what YouTubers saying like and subscribe feel like? It sucks.
[X] Research Local – Find out what's going on with the gang war!
Kinda want to see what the response to Herc is like at this point, given the carnage he's wrought of the Empire's heavy hitters.
[X] Research Local – Find out what's going on with the gang war!
...It sounds like Herc turned Hookwolf into a burger patty and then tore him in half, and then did unspeakable things to Night and Fog. Maybe Taylor should spend a day or two seeing the fallout of this before she goes out again.
