"He couldn't think about Moon. Ulyssian well knew that he could do little for her now, and there were too many critical lines of thought to address."
Don't worry Uly she'll be fine
They took a brisk pace, walking swiftly to the Headmaster's office. Ulyssian's mind raced, passing between concepts with an unnatural fluidity. There was so much to do, so many avenues to grow... in idle hours, he'd often mused what he would do differently, if he could send his consciousness back to the time of his childhood. There were so many exercises he could have done, so many adjustments he could have made, to train faster, work harder, even within the scope of a child's developing willpower.
This was like a second pubescence, his thoughts alight with countless paths to improvement. Training could only take him so far, that much was clear; all texts agreed that, for the Chosen, the highest tiers of supernal skill required active exercise against true adversity. Nonetheless, there were practical ideas, if only he had the time. He feared he would not. His memories of the Age of Glory could hold invaluable knowledge as well, but after Exaltation they were fragmentary; he'd need hours, if not days, to properly place them into context. He felt, vaguely, that he was in many ways diminished from Odyssial-that-was, but did not know what heights he'd fallen from. That was for the best; it would be decades, if not centuries before he grew into the fullness of his power, and it would serve little purpose to be taunted by what he could not attain."
Well yep you got a second chance to things differently and better. Like say finally picking up sorcery? Though we do need time to grow back into our power. Good thing Uly isn't angsting over his current weakness. Makes sense though. Doing so would be inefficient when he could spend that time regaining his strength.
Characters from other stories should follow his example.
"Sir," Ulyssian replied, "I haven't thought through my goals yet. I am still in the process of recovering my memories from the First Age. There could be critical information there."
"You have memories?" He frowned. "That is not unheard of, but, aside from the location of your prior incarnation's tomb, they are rarely useful, often distracting."
Snort oh it's not that simple Zao. It never is with this one.
"Not just memories," Ulyssian said. "At the close of the First Age, I arranged for my Exaltation to seek out my soul again, and commanded Lethos not to erase its characteristics. My memories I maintained on the Exaltation itself. I remember the Age of Glory, some parts of the Primordial War, and after that, only generalities. I believe my mind-state by the High First Age had grown too complicated for this brain to parse. Likely those memories will be released to me as I grow in strength."
Zao stared.
Yeah That's a completely appropriate reaction Zao. Well for someone who doesn't know who we are. Then the appropriate reactions are to either scream in terror, flee, start begging for mercy while groveling to us, or some mix of the above. You can ask Heaven, Hell, the various things that either died at our hands or because of us and the Rakasha(Especially the Rakasha).
I meant what I said," Zao replied, grimacing. "I don't think Creation is going to outlive my natural lifespan, and I have barely more than a century. If we're lucky, we'll get fifty years, at the rate things are currently developing. In twenty, we'll all be living in a war-torn ruin. Creation has too many enemies, and they are too strong. Its would-be defenders are too busy murdering each other. Your behavior was likely to attract a Solar Exaltation. I'm almostsurprised it took this long. I thought, if I could just find a Solar that was willing to listen, and teach him everything I knew, maybe he would be able to do what I could not."
And there's that reminder that we are on a time table. 50 years at best? Not even a full century? We have a lot of work to do. Fortunately for Creation and everyone not foolish or dumb enough to get in our way, we're us. I expect our efforts will at the very least buy more time to give us a bit more breathing room.
"Yes," said Zao. "And the Realm is still the most powerful entity on the face of Creation. Just not powerful enough. If you are as capable a Solar as you were a mortal, however, I think there is a chance."
Looks at the accomplishments of Odyissial the first Dawn, The Lord Staregos commander of the Entire Exalted Host, the Subduer of the Wyld, Peerless Beyond Sorcery, Most High, the one who turned Lethos into a river, who could slaughter several SCDs before their third circles could react just 7 years after exalting, the Man who terrified The Exalted Host to a level on par with the Great Curse, The one the Raksha feared as the "End of Stories", The Most feared and powerful being in Creation, Heaven, Hell, and the Wyld, the guy who took out twice as much of the Usurpation's forces as the rest of the Solars combined in his weaker less ruthless alternate self, the wielder of one of if not the strongest melee weapon ever made, the man so stubborn and determined he found a way to beat death itself which was considered impossible even for those whoose entire purpose was to do the impossible."
Look at those accomplishments And realize we mean to
surpass that glory. You have no worries Zao.
"We will have to move quickly, though. You cannot waste your time here. Within a year, I want you either to be in control of House Sesus, or in a position of similar influence, hopefully betrothed to an equally powerful House, without neglecting the growth of your personal power."
Head of House Sesus? Him? Zao thought
it was a realistic prospect. Everything had changed. But there was no time to reel. There was no time to sort things through the timidly advancing, languorous pace of human emotions. If the world was going to end, then Ulyssian, who was Odyssial, could give nothing less than his utmost. The value of every day, every hour, had to be maximized ruthlessly. It was... comforting. Everything had changed, and nothing had."
Head of the house or in a similar position in a year? Zao truly does have high expectations for us. Well let's not disappoint him? Shall we? Also he won't die this time if we have anything so say about it. Zao won't sacrifice himself to make sure we exalt, die powering up, or whatever other bullshit tries to off him. Not again. After all "Third times" the charm. We will protect Zao. We owe to him and to Moon.
Heh somethings never change Ulyssian.
"Now," Zao continued, "there are two matters to attend to. Number one, your prior life. I will take what you have said at face value, but I am not experienced in this field. Ivory is, and she may be able to help. You were a Solar of the First Age. Do you remember which Solar you were?"
Oh no one too special just O-
"Odyssial," said Pearl, voice soft. She always had been dramatic.
Fucking teacup ninjas
"Odyssial," Zao exhaled. "I have heard that name before, in the secret councils of the Viziers, as they spoke with demons. A name they feared, that they dared only whisper. It was slightly ridiculous. I have seen it inscribed in ancient script on the furthest corners of the world. More than this, I do not know. Would you care to explain how you do, Ivory?"
They only whimper? They can even think his name let alone say it without
suffering a heart attack? Must have been demons who weren't old enough to personally remember him. And only inscribed on ancient text in the farest corners if the world thing is a reminder of how through a job the Siderael did erasing the deeds of the Solars. Very impressive given how our crusade against the Raksha spread our name everywhere. Maybe this is why some trace of our existence still lingered in the world despite Siderael efforts. Minus people like Lea and the descendants of our loyal dragonblooded legions of course.
However we can fix "they don't know about us" thing when we're ready of course. Oh yes we'll do a very good job of jogging everyone's memories and re engraving ourselves into the annals of history.
"Sifu," Pearl said reproachfully, features conflicted. "it's not ridiculous. You wouldn't understand. Odyssial was the greatest and most terrible of all the Solar generals. The Maidens themselves feared what he might do. And I... one of my past lives, was very close to him. His personal advisor, in fact. As for how I know, well, they look and act exactly the same."
"You're not much different yourself, Pearl," said Odyssial, turning to glance at her. "Your features are all the same, you're merely taller." Sepulchral Pearl had grown up malnourished. Reminiscent Ivory, or whatever name she had been given, likely had not.
Pearl/Ivory: Essentially Ody and therefore Uly was and still is the baddest motherfucker to ever live.
Ulyssian: Stop your making me blush. I'm nowhere near the height of my power yet and what did I tell you about calling me that?
Ivory: "Sorry can't remember everything as unlike a certain someone I didn't plan to tell death "fuck you." So my memories are still a little blurry."
Ulyssian: hmph excuses.
"Past lives," Zao muttered, shaking his head. "I don't have time for this. Deal with it amongst yourselves, tell me afterwards if anything needs to change. Ulyssian, Odyssial, whatever you prefer to be called, you will find me in the hospital wing. Ivory, I trust you will not forget the urgency of our current situation."
Zao's train of thought as he heard this "Greatest and most terrible Solar? feared by the Maidens themselves? Ivory is a reincarnation too? And she was his personal advisor? What is this?I don't even-you know what? Fuck it. I'm both too sober and too old for this bullshit. I'll just leave you guys to your reunion while I checking my daughter kthanksbai
Ironically he couldn't say he's too old as technically speaking both Ivory and Ulyssian are much older then him if you count tier past lives to their age.
Oh and funnily enough he still has absolutely no clue of how epic Odyissial was and how the demons whispering his name in fear is actually tame reaction. Otherwise he would have been long plastered by now or at least started drinking after Ivory said our name. Either way he would be drunk as all hell. Which might not be a bad idea. I'm sure they created some drug or drink to help deal with the tramua of facing Ofyissial's wrath. I imagine it's very popular. Probably explains why those demons can say his name outloud without suddenly needing brown pants, having a heart attack, or simply assuming the fetal position and start crying for mercy for daring to let his name come from their tongues. You know normal reactions.
I am not Sepulchral Pearl," Pearl maintained, voice trembling slightly. "She was just one of the previous holders of my Exaltation, and a monster. Uly, Ulyssian, there's not much to say. I may have memories, but my soul is not hers. What I did today, though you may not understand, was the equivalent of high treason to my Faction. I threw in completely with Zao, I-""
Great she's starting to freak out. Stupid bronze brainwashing.
"Cold fury burned within him. The Bronze Faction would pay in blood. Him, they had merely killed. Pearl, they had eviscerated."
Yes when the time comes we will remind the Bronze Faction exactly why we were feared by even the Primordials, the Incarnae, and our fellow Exalted. They obviously have forgotten. They shall be a testament to what the fuck happens when you are stupid and arrogant enough piss off Ulyssian/Odyissial by harming those he cares for.
"Ulyssian shook his head. "No. The effects propagated to those I was closest to, I couldn't contain it to myself even if I'd wanted to. Lethos treats your soul and characteristics the same as it does mine. Your Exaltation is fated to search for you alone. That is likely why the Bronze Faction made sure to indoctrinate you, in each life, from an early age."
So we essentially kicked death's ass so bad that we accidentally did too well a job and caused those close to us to be reincarnated as well because death feared we would be displeased to not have our compatriots back as well? Damn Odyissial just how hard did you punch death in the face that it became such a submissive little bitch to you?
"That," she shook her head, so different now from the composed Professor that Ulyssian knew. She was almost petulant, in that particular way of Pearl's. "That can't be true. I know I'm similar to her, personality-wise, but that doesn't mean anything. I'm not her, I'm not her, I'M NOT!"
See this crap people. We couldd've had shit like this happen to us personally if we had went with Identity crisis. Aren't you glad we missed that bullet?
[ ] Prove It. Release Ambition from your anima. As her own memories will undoubtedly tell her, only four Exalts in all Creation can wield it without your express permission, and it cannot be fooled. If she is not Sepulchral Pearl - Exaltation and soul - she will not be able to use it. This is a critical moment, you cannot afford delay, not if Pearl is to recover herself. She died because she was close to you. You will not allow her to suffer any more at the hands of Chejob's lackeys.
For this to work, you will have to flash-purchase the Immortal Bladesmaster Title. Since you paid 150,000 XP before, I will discount the cost by 75,000 XP; the other half paid for the benefits of your extremely good Disguise outcome. You will therefore require 245,000 Normal XP to flash-purchase the Title, which grants, among other things, the power to summon your blade to hand, the power to banish and retrieve your personal arms from Elsewhere, the acquisition of Ambition, and greatly improved offensive skill."
Ohh so we can get our bitching blade AND tell the Bronze brainwashing to go fuck itself. Me likey and the xp cost would be worth it. As for those for our exalts who can wield it I'm guessing they are Pearl(Obviously), Lea, Fairest and Ulyssian. Maybe someone else if Ulyssian is excluded in that case I have no idea who it could as the only other named exalt in our past life is rosary. Wait of course Our loyal dragonblooded commander Inexhaustible Ember.
Wait if that's true she is a likely reincarnation candidate and isn't there suspicion that she's Flame's Sister in this era. If that is true as well...hehehehehehe We need to meet her ASAP. Flame's reaction would be glorious and would make the decision not to kill him well worth it. Double points if he's also the reincarnation inexhaustible's older brother who also hated us. The sheer amount of salt he would create would be enough to provide the salt needs of humanity for a full millennia. Yeah not
killing Flame is laying off more and more. Sooooo many potential trolling opportunities.
[ ] Attempt to Persuade Her. You are newly Exalted, and less than confident in your social skills. Still, you must find a way to break through the Bronze Faction brainwashing and help her see the evident truth. Both that Pearl is her identity, and that Pearl was far from a monster. She was a Hero of Creation, instrumental to the defeat of more than one Titan. Her actions saved trillions. With an exceptional stunt, your chances are fair to good."
The Social fu option. Hmm Ulyssian usually left such matters up to Lea and his Prescence is described as being better for intimidation which isn't what we want. However Rihaku does say it
Could work with a good stunt and we would be passionate about convincing Ivory of how her last self was awesome and the Bronze Faction has been feeding her BS.
[ ] Accept It. It is the result of Bronze Faction brainwashing. But ultimately, only Ivory can decide whether she is or is not Pearl. As she herself was saying earlier, she has thrown in completely with Zao. She will be a reliable ally regardless. [+150,00 XP]
We let Ivory decide what to make of her past. She's already thrown her lot
In with Zao by hello our charade. So she'll support us because Zao supports us. This way we get awarded XP. Tempting.
Reaction 1360 words
This shit took nearly 3 hours on my phone but hey it should at least be worth it for the xp.
[X] Prove it.
This gives us access to our artifact N/A Sword which helps out greatly with our combat skills and fully convinces Ivory. All of my yes.
