Evermark Underground: RPG Brothel Management

[X] Plan Denouement

I wouldn't mind getting the magic shop started, but replenishing the healing potion stock isn't a bad idea. Thanks, Sonata!

"Did my purchases from the harbour come in?", you ask.

"Yes, Mistress," Holly reports. "The fur and silk are safely in the cellar, while we've set up the soundstage equipment on the indoor stage. We've already sold all the grapes, actually - they went quite fast - for a total profit of 30 clean Æther."

"Less than I'd hoped, but cleaner on the books. Probably worth the purchase."

Holly nods. "Probably."

"Edie, how did the donation to charity go?"

"In addition to being in a good cause, it seems to have quelled some of the rumours about us. Not many, but some."

You nod. "It's to be expected that clearing your name takes longer than muddying it."

"Exactly."

"As for our other investment in our name… we now own a third of all of House Galero's debt. That ought to give us some major leverage, oughtn't it?"

"It certainly sounds like we're doing something of importance."

You smile. "Glad you agree. And speaking of things of importance - Varielle, you finished those potions?"

She nods. "They're done, at least for this batch."

"Good to hear. In that case, I have a ball to attend."

Much like the balls in summer and fall, you find yourself in your same starlight-blue dress, out on the Merchant's Guild dancefloor. It's time again to ask how you'll focus your efforts while you're here.

[ ][Ball] Try to get a word in with the established investors and merchants.
[ ][Ball] Speak to the Guild officials, particularly the higher-ups, and feel them out.
[ ][Ball] Focus on looking for those of revolutionary sentiment and gathering them together.
[ ][Ball] Focus on the younger and more radical merchants to try and find recruits.
[ ][Ball] Go stand at the buffet table.

Marielle and the Kalinsha meet in the middle of the shrine. Marielle extends a hand; the Kalinsha takes it. They both nod for the music to start together.

And they dance.

Marielle is a consuming fire; the Kalinsha is a deep ocean. She dances and twirls and flits around him with consuming energy; he matches her with discipline and form. Where they meet, something new happens. Steam, erupting into the world.

The whole room fills with silver fog too dense to see through, and somehow still they dance, blind and musicless and perfect, and the mist gathers itself up into a perfect opal sphere and falls with a clatter to the floor.

Both the Kalinsha and Marielle pant from the exertion of… whatever just happened. The Kalinsha sits down heavily.

Leah claps from the bedside as you step forwards and pick up the jewel. It hisses gently against your hand, like the memory of steam.

"Does anyone have any idea what just happened?"

Everyone shakes their heads.

"Well then."

You tuck the sphere away in your purse for safekeeping.

The Steamborne Revolution 9/10

The Redcaps line up in the dojo, nice neat rows for you to command. Valerie stands one pace forwards, as do the mercenaries you've employed as a training corps.

You stand on an old harbour crate you had in the cellar, and look over it all.

"Men and women of the Redcaps," you say. "You have fought well and honorably. You have taken wounds in the service of what you believed in, risked your lives in the defense of this harbour. You are great and worthy, and perhaps some day the world will know your names; but for now, you can only be sustained by this. This comradery, this cause, this battle. It is all you can hope for."

"I think it's enough. I think I'd rather fight and die with you all beside me than try to struggle alone. I think you are the best men and women I could have chosen for this, and fuck your origins, wether rat or redcap, urchin or a rich house's castoff. You are all Redcaps today. And I thank you deeply, from the bottom of my heart, for all that you've done for me and this city I love."

You step down from your crate.

"Redcaps, Dismissed!"

They salute you as one.

You salute back.

Then you leave.

You're not sure how much longer you could have lasted before tearing up.

That was beautiful. Red Caps and Rats united together. Beautiful scene. Also very interesting about the whole dance thing of our new religion, we need to figure it out eventually.

Shouldn't we have 10 House Galero favors now, not 0? And shouldn't either our Discretion have gone up or our Scandal have gone down? I also don't see any silk in our treasury even though we have per-month silk income and we just bought a bunch of stuff from the harbormaster.

Okay, I'm trying to think of something. Expect it to suck.

[X] Plan Meetings.
-[X][Ball] Speak to the Guild officials, particularly the higher-ups, and feel them out.
-[X][Control] The Suffragists' Union is dedicated to political and mercantile equality. Go see what they're doing.

Okay, I don't know who to really pick at the ball, but either merchants or guilds would make us and our business have a more legitimate front by at least being seen around merchants with a high standing reputation or official city guilds, right? I picked the guilds, but well-known merchants are still a possibility.

With the Ceverra I think getting contracts through them might still be helpful and might help us gain favor, right? I don't really remember and I can easily change it to something else like looking for noble or rich clients.

I want to meet the Suffragists' Union because I think they might be a good addition to the revolution and keeping up contact could be handy. I also want to meet with The Sharks to see how we stand with them and if we can find a weak spot to somehow convince them later to merge with us.

More potions helped in the past, and it will help in the future.

The dance I want to do with Leah to get to the 10/10. Feels right to me. I also want to keep training our soldiers in the Broken Fang Way as we were before we became a teacher. Sweet memories~.

[X] Plan: Spending Aether
-[X][Ball] Go stand at the buffet table.
-[X][Control] Upgrade a business room into a VIP room. 3 Bolts Silk, 30 Clean Æther.
-[X][Charm] Upgrade the landscaped courtyard with a water feature, like a pond or a stream. 250 Clean Æther.

-[X][Personal] Take time out of your schedule to go on a date with Leah.

Each time we've went to the Ball there's been the option to hangout at the food/drinks area, and I'm curious what it will bring. I doubt that its a "skip" option.

For the Plan, building the Magic shop on the vacant lot with Libertine Favors leaves us with enough clean Aether to buy a water feature for the courtyard, as well as start adding silk to the second story. With the silk tribute, we can upgrade a room every three months until we can finish the rest all at once.

I also talked last time about checking in on the Sharks to see what their plans are now that they've achieved their goal. Finding that out will probably decide how we approach our intigue actions in the near future.

Next, I think we should look for experts on either magic/faith/or failing both, jewelry to look at the steamborne gem before poking at it ourselves. I doubt they'll understand it fully, but they should eliminate dead ends for us.

Finally, its been a few months since we've had a date with Leah, and they have been a stressful few months. I think a date will help us relax, as well as develop our relationship with her.

(I'm hoping if we can recreate the steamborne gem, that we can make a set of matching jewelry for the two of us.)

The only thing I don't like about this plan is the ball. I'm with you that I doubt it's a "skip" option, but I think we should look into the Guild officials sooner rather than later.

I feel that the guild higher ups and established investors won't really give us anything worthwile until we've been introduced to court. We're kind of a nobody outside the harbor until that happens.

Why would the Merchant Guild be stuffy about people who aren't at court? Speaking from real-world history here since we know very little of this world's history, merchants and nobility were at odds pretty much the entire time they both existed as institutions. Merchants are dirty commoners while nobles are stuck-up fops. There's no reason to think that the Guild would stick its nose up at us for being a merchant when their entire reason to exist is to leverage their collective power against the nobility.

*rubs her forehead* think I copypasted something incorrectly, let me see here.

... annnd should be fixed.

What more is required for being introduced at court?
10 favors are accumulated, etiquette lessons have been going on for several months, and M. Estellé has what I thought was a high-quality outfit.

Is it possible to extend the hotelry and other businesses into the empty lot?
Instead of building a magic shop?

How many people are employed in the fishmarket?
As good as closing it might be for improving the class of the business, I don't want to throw a bunch of people out of work.

Is that... some sort of Orbite?
An Orbite takes the physical form of a crystalline sphere, about the size of a baseball, with its color and inscribed Aspect determined by which Noble House that Orbite was manufactured by.

An Orbite is "inscribed" by the process of singing an Elædrin mantra while pressing the crystal sphere to the bare skin over your heart. This dissolves the sphere into a wash of Aura, and "kindles" your own Aura for the first time.
You know, I think you're right about it being an Orbite. That might change my plan for the faith option now that you've pointed it out.

I wonder if the lead singer for our band can help us with that second part, I think she was described as something similar to Elædrin, she's a member of all faiths so she is trust worthy to approach.

Innumerable Aspect, and the MG contract magicians had something similar?
The contracted Magical Girls were more about Class change, it was the Succubus Contract magicians that could let you change your Orbite.

I don't remember how Innumerable Aspect changed people's Orbites. They'll definitely want to know about a new Orbite though, especially if its not one innately tied to the Noble houses.

It's less about the Nobility aspect, and more about being a known name. Like I said, we haven't really done much outside the Harbor. Hotel Variety is pretty popular and has grown relatively rapidly, but its not a major investment opportunity. Its more a source of Noble gossip due to its secondary business, and bailout of House Galero's debts.

And with the Sharks being in control of the Port Authority, the warehouses, and the sailors/deckhands, even someone who's kept an eye on the Harbor underworld isn't likely to know of us due to the Redcaps. And we've taken great efforts to separate our public persona and our leadership of the Redcaps on top of that.

I'm pretty sure that the important people know who we are. They may not know of our revolutionary goals, but I doubt we've really hidden the fact that the Redcaps answer to us (thus the Scandal from the Mob shootout).

[X] Plan Waterfront Business
-[X][Ball] Speak to the Guild officials, particularly the higher-ups, and feel them out.
-[X][Control] Upgrade a business room into a VIP room. 3 Bolts Silk, 30 Clean Æther.
-[X][Charm] Upgrade the landscaped courtyard with a water feature, like a pond or a stream. 250 Clean Æther.

OK, it's late so just a quick breakdown: I want to talk to the Guild officials so we can get an idea about how friendly they are to our revolutionary sentiments. If they're friendly, we have a potential ally. If they're not, we know that the lower-tier members are, so that's a possible lever to push at a future point. Valuable info either way. Control, Charm, and Lore are all about upgrading our existing properties. Intrigue is about consolidating the waterfront—the Sharks were primarily opposed to the Mob, so maybe now that we've helped them with that we can work out some kind of deal or even absorb them as well. The Faith option is because I want to see if it's an Orbite; if so, I will be campaigning for us to shift ours to it ASAP. And finally, Personal is for Leah since we didn't spend any time with her last month.

@Evenstar what else do we need to be introduced to court? A better dress (or just more dresses, I imagine nobles would laugh at someone who showed up to every court event with the same clothes)? Court-appropriate jewelry? Something else I'm not thinking of?
