Evermark Underground: RPG Brothel Management

[X]Plan Acceleration Preparation
-[X][Ball] Speak to the Guild officials, particularly the higher-ups, and feel them out.
-[X][Control] Distribute your leaflets covering revolutionary topics. (Opens menu for where to send leaflets.)
-[X][Charm] Search for contacts in the city.
-[X][Intrigue] Buy another tenth-share of House Galero's debt. 1,250 Dirty Æ, +5 House Galero favours.
-[X][Lore] Build a magic store on the vacant lot with Libertine help. 300 clean Æ, 5 Libertine Favours.
-[X][Faith] Try to find a Caducite priest to dance with you.
-[X][Personal] Take more time alone to cultivate your Aura and Orbite.

Reasoning:
  • Ball: If we can get an in at the upper levels of the Guild, that gives us some huge opportunities. And if they all oppose our ideals, then that's valuable information as well—it speaks to a divide between the established merchants and the young, hungry ones, and that's something we can use as well.
  • Control: We still have some pamphlets and we still have some revolutionary organizations that we haven't really put in contact with the others yet.
  • Charm: Not many options are here given that I want to build the magic shop. We've looked for Ceverra contacts the last couple times, so let's go to the city now.
  • Intrigue: We have over 2000 dirty to spend this turn, and if we buy the favors now we can possibly ask to be introduced next turn if our existing silk dress is considered good enough. And if it isn't, we'll know to be on the lookout for silk.
  • Lore: More income, stronger power base, firmer control of our territory.
  • Faith: We've tried the others and we're still short on Steamborne advancement.
  • Personal: I could be persuaded to change this, but we haven't cultivated since we changed to Kalinsha. It's possible we'll get new insights from it.

This number is wrong iirc, we've definitely made more then one batch of healing potions. Shouldn't it be 12 or 18 at this point?

I'm glad the date worked out well, we're definitely going to have to take the month into account when planning dates in the future though, I can't imagine outdoor stuff in the dead of winter will work out as well.

It seems that the Vansaga practitioner took the dance as a competition rather than collaboration, which meant it didn't become Steamborne. A shame, but definitely something to think about in the future.

And the Redcaps seem to be in a place where we don't need to micromanage them, we'll still guide them with big picture stuff, like who to ally with and who to attack, but the stuff below that can be handled by them without issue. Which is good, it's where we wanted them to be at this point, we can move our focus onto making sure the different causes of the revolution can unify after this.

[X] Plan: Winter Storm
-[X][Ball] Focus on the younger and more radical merchants to try and find recruits.
-[X][Control] The Suffragists' Union is dedicated to political and mercantile equality. Go see what they're doing.
-[X][Charm] Search for contacts in the city.
-[X][Intrigue] Have the Redcaps stage an assault on Mob territory along with your allies the Sharks.
-[X][Lore] Have Varielle brew some healing potions, just in case. 100 Dirty Æther should suffice for a batch for six.
-[X][Faith] Dance with Leah and practice its use as a channel for Steamborne power.
-[X][Personal] Go down to the docks and purchase "lost" or confiscated cargoes from the Port Authority on the sly.

We tried for the revolutionaries last time iirc, so this time we should look into the younger merchants for recruits. Hopefully it goes better than last time.

If it weren't for the fact that we're going on the offensive with the Mob, I'd be buying the Magic shop at a discount this turn, but since we are, I'm making a last batch of healing potions. Next turn is the magic shop for sure though.

The Redcaps are finally going after the Mob, which should not only make the Sharks happy, but should also make our lives easier on the Harbor. If successful, the only forces in the harbor underworld will be answering to, or allied with us. Next turn we should be able to buy the last half of House Galero's debt, and hopefully, if we take over the Mob's silk merchants, we should be able to buy silk for much cheaper, allowing for us to have more than just the one dress for appearing in court.

We got some favors with the Suffragists, and I'd like to see what they could offer to us. I also want to start looking for contacts in the city proper as we continue to expand. The Port Authority should also have some unique opportunities for us, we just have to remember that it's not a consistent source of whatever we buy.

Finally, dancing with Leah should help us understand what went wrong with the higher ranking Vansaga practitioner, which should hopefully further our understanding of the Steamborne faith.

Steamborne is basically about shipping Vansaga/Unfanged. Introducing a third god into the mix is not at all obviously a good idea. These are people, not alchemical reagents.
No, they're Gods, and we have no idea what that means in this world. Also, Estelle is Caducite, so how do we know that faith isn't part of it?

I like this plan, but I do want to keep up the relationship - we didn't go on a date w/ her last month, remember.

[X] Plan: Winter Storm

Eh, what the hell? Let's storm the mob. I don't know how likely it is to succeed, so it's a huge gamble right now.

The vote is closed, but I just caught up so I feel the need to say Good Work, Evenstar! I barely understand what's going on even with the Information posts, but I'm invested in our burgeoning relationship with Leah and the faith that we've concocted together.

Dross 1904
"So Estelle, how did the ball go?", asks Holly.

You blink. "Shouldn't I be the one asking you questions?"

"This is supposed to be a status update meeting, right? So dish. What happened at the ball?"

"I was able to direct a few more enterprising young merchants to the Suffragists' Union. That's about all."

"Alright," says Holly. "I suppose it's my turn to confirm they got there. Which they did."

"Was that so hard?"

"No, not really. On to Edie?"

"On to Edie. Edie, how did your search for contacts in the city go?"

"I encountered an organization giving aid to the poor, Cadis' Servants. They seemed like they might be a useful contact point if we wanted to recruit from the downtrodden in the city."

"Good work. Varielle?"

"I finished my batch and also made sure my previous one got all the way to the treasury; sorry for forgetting to move them last time!"

"Don't let it happen again, alright?"

"Yes Mistress."

"I hope we have enough potions."

"Me too."

The cramped side office of the Port Authority is as dingy as always. The official you talk to is the same one as before; it's only now that you notice the tattoo of a shark just above his wrist.

"Good hunting," he says. "Can't say as there's much in this lot would help you, but be my guest to buy whatever you please."

"So," says Leah. "Your people should be hitting the Mob any minute now. This could be our last chance to dance for a very long time."

"Let's make the most of it, then."

Despite the dark clouds on the horizon, your dance is still as passionate and perfect as ever. Nothing like the one you had with Leah's Vansaga mentor.

This is a dance between equals.

When you step away from the dance, something goes click in your brain.

"I have an idea."

The Steamborne Revolution 8/10

You can hear the gunshots across the harbour.

There just isn't enough of anything to dampen the racket. Too much sea, not enough buildings.

It sounds like a war zone.

You take a sip of your tea, and try not to worry about your people dying out there. They're strong, and well-prepared. You'll be fine.

Some hours after the gunshots stop, Valerie comes in to the teahouse. She looks exhausted.

She pays for a room, but goes to the warded meeting room. You follow.

She closes the door behind you.

"It was bad," she says. "Lots of casualties, both ours and civilians. We had enough potions for everyone, thank all the gods, but it was an awful bloody mess."

"We got them all, though. We won. Us and the Sharks, and I swear the Sharks need to learn to shoot straight, they caused half as many problems for us as the Mob…"

She sighs. "It was a victory in the end. We didn't lose anybody. But it's going to be in the papers tomorrow that we went in and wiped out the mob here. There were at least a half-dozen witnesses, probably more."

"On the bright side, we were able to capture the Mob's account books for this area and even after a 50/50 split with the Sharks it'll be a major gain for us."

"That's it. That's my report. Permission to go sleep, Kalinsha?"

"Granted."

I think it's wise to go for rebuilding our Discretion budget, and we can afford spending a lot. Hopefully, a plan like this should let us get closer to going to the next phase of our entanglement with House Galero, and get more money and opportunities flowing. Also, I hope that we will be able to produce e.g. more healing potions by having a big dedicated space for magic work and hiring more staff to fill that out.

Woof, that scandal. We need to get some more discretion somehow. Publicly donating to charity, maybe? Also, that's a huge income boost.

I'll get a plan drawn up this evening if no one else chimes in with one I like beforehand. Building the new magic shop is my top personal priority. We might want to try the charity to see if we can get more discretion buffer from it.

EDIT: Whoops, crossposted with a plan. I don't see anything I dislike about that except that it doesn't have a Control option ;)

I think we can get more discretion by donating to charity publically, by getting more nobles into the buisness, in visiting or otherwise, and by upping how much Galero is patronizing us.
(I also added a control option, btw)

:o I'm so glad we made as many potions as we did, or it would have been a lot worse for us. I don't think the Mob is gonna do anything in the Harbor for quite a while after this, they were hit too hard to do so. I wouldn't be surprised if they started getting pressured by the other underworld factions because of this.

[X] Plan Burn Baby, Burn!

Basically what I was gonna have for my plan. I do think we should talk with the Sharks next turn, since they originally unified to kick the Mob out of the Harbor, and now they've achieved it. We need to know if they will fracture, and what their future plans are. I don't think they are so fragile that we need to look into that immediately though.

For now, I think we've earned a breather after all that excitement, a date with Leah sound wonderful.

Jirachi47, could I convince you to edit your plan? I love everything about it, but change the Personal Action to:
[][Personal] Spend time overseeing one of the major business areas. (Write in a stat; Control, Charm, etc.
-[] Intrigue: Personally visit and thank the Redcaps/Rats for their actions

After having a bunch of civilians killed, what sounds like lots of 'friendly' fire, and blowing through a pretty large stash of healing potions, I think M. Estellé needs to be prompt in showing her gratitude and reaffirming her support of the gang. Maybe interview Valerie for any standouts to give specific recognition to, along with a monetary reward? There are now heavily armed killers working for the brothel, and they need to be kept happy and loyal.

Damn, this could be really bad now with all the scandals. I hope we use the next few months to build a lot of discretion because this war was costly, and not in lives. Now all we need to do is take over more and more areas connected to the harbor and we will become the Harbor Queen.

...Yeah, I know that this will go against The Sharks, which could be a very bad idea, but eventually I want to become the Harbor Queen with full control over the city harbor. Those who commerce have all the power.

Valerie said that there were casualties not fatalities among the civilians and our side, so I think that while people were wounded, no one died thanks to our stock of healing potions. (Except the Mob of course.) Combining the fact that we were the ones distributing healing potions, and the fact that the Sharks were the ones who created the most "collateral damage", I think we can easily keep the public's opinion of the redcaps positive despite this. Maybe paying some reparations to the civilians wounded in the fight would work.

Depending on how the Sharks handle no longer having a common enemy to unify themselves around, it might be easier to solidify our grasp on the harbor than one might think. If they fracture, we should poach the ones that can be made into Redcaps, and remove the ones who will become problems for us if left alone.

Of course we should hope to keep things peaceful, as the fight with the Mob showed, forcibly removing a faction is costly in scandal (and potentially lives) even when successful. If we could fold them into us like we did with the Rats that would be optimal, though unlikely.
