Esquestria: The House of the Sun - A pony cultist experience

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Dear reader! Whether you are new here, archive-reading and whatnot, or you are already someone who has been with us for quite a while, I would like to say a few words that I believe are best kept close to mind.

-This is an MLP quest. And more importantly, none of us are gratuitously cruel. So good things will happen on this quest, and I hope that enough good things have already happened to prove that.
-This is also a horror quest, so bad things will happen. Bad things might happen to good characters if you are not able to protect them, and you most certainly will not be able to intervene if you lack the tools to do so.
-And finally, this is a quest in which you jostle with powers greater than yourself, with all that it entails.

Please, do keep those things in mind as you go forward. But ultimately, this is also a quest in which it is hoped we all have fun! So if any of the above points is not exactly your cup of tea, or somehow make the experience as a whole "not worth it", then this quest might not be for you. Which is fine! Individual tastes are a thing, so don't think any more about it if you don't want to read anymore. And regardless, I hope you have a lovely day!

PSA for whoever needs to hear it:

Readers should take their own mental health into consideration when voting and not subject themselves to triggering narrative elements like rape or constant mental torture of a friend just for the Greatest Good of a world that doesn't exist.

If those are fine for you or Regrettable is even more triggering, then GREAT! More power to you. But you aren't a bad or selfish person for picking the option that keeps the characters you've emotionally connected with safe. [REDACTED for spoiler warning]

This is a high intensity quest that doesn't hold back when it comes to horror and negative consequences. Take care of yourself.
(Quote slightly edited to avoid spoilers)

I'd like to remind the ones that go "let's kill our dad" that our beloved uncle is a mafia boss, and is probably responsible for more deaths and sufferings that even our father.
Or at the very least broken bones and/or heavy intimidation and blackmail
If for no other reason that he's probably the one our dad goes to when he needs someone dealt with extra-legally.
Wait... Did you think I was advocating killing him for moral reasons? Huh, weird.

That really didn't factor into it, except in that he's scummy enough I won't feel bad killing him for personal, practical reasons. But no, I never said "let's kill him because he's a bad guy" I said "let's kill him because he's basically our enemy and his control of our estate is a sword of Damocles hanging over our heads and also Velvet hates him." None of those things apply to our Uncle and pointing out he's a mafia boss doesn't really affect any of those things.

Well, luckily enough that seems to be resolving itself in a relatively manageable manner, but we may yet regret leaving him alive this long.

why? It's not that hard.

in usually means "inside".

on usually means "right above something"

and "at" is basically close proximity to the item in question.
...ok, at is a bit less easy. Technically speaking when you're "at" the store/threatre and so on, you're technically inside it usually...

Yeah, there's actually a lot of implicit context regarding what counts as a "setting" or a "ground" in those three.

I'm in the platform waiting for the train to arrive on the station; before that I was in the bus waiting to arrive at the bus stop so I could go on the bus to the train station.
Wrong in at least 2 ways, and it still sounds reasonable unless you look very closely.

And that's not even getting into the in/on thing, where half the time both of them are wrong in different groups of English-speakers!

You know, we did conveniently attack Copper in a way that leaves her technically alive. Surely we could just sneak into whatever asylum they put her in and take a few bites?

Alright, here are my reactions to the latest update!

@BirdBodhisattva another update, another round of suggestions! :V

You don't use them as guideposts to remember what insights you gleamed all those months ago, when you pored your efforts into translating this tome.
This is confusing "poured" (to decant/pour a liquid) and "pored" (to read thoroughly).
when you poured your efforts into translating this tome
when you pored over this tome to translate it

But more than that, you are shocked when you put think back at what you just read, and notice that you actually understood it.
Looks like a word has been left in accidentally; "put" should be deleted.

After all, you understand that the workshops the servants use during the day, to perform the countless small repairs for the estate's maintenance, is a busy place.
It looks like there is subject/verb disagreement between "the workshops" and "is". It sounds wrong to me, but I suppose you could argue that "the workshops" is a singular place.

Astrology is a… curious science. After all, you know the stars are real, but you also know that the alicorns can shape the night sky at their whims.
This is confusing astrology (the fortune telling practice based on constellations, which is a pseudoscience or not claiming to be serious/scientific) with astronomy (the study of the stars and night sky, which is a science). That's a very common mistake, for example in City Skylines (YouTube clip, Reddit). Maybe you could argue that the usage is different in this universe somehow.

Whenever our collection of Mane 6 grows, I feel a deep satisfaction! (And heartbreak at our current relationship with Twilight.) I think I recall that gathering the Mane 6 and siccing the Elements of Harmony on something was some kind of ending or approach somehow? That may be a moot point now, though.

So, you can tell that she is not shy. Instead, she is reserved. Fluttershy, you realize, is a mare who knows, understands, and accepts what she likes and dislikes. And the few times you have seen her engaged and talkative, it was when the subject involved something that she was truly interested in.

Fluttershy, you can tell, is a mare who knows what she wants. And who simply does not give any of her time to the things she dislikes.
I love how Fluttershy is written in this story. It makes me respect her character a lot 🥹. Fitting how you can see (in the two Mane 6 ponies we've developed deep relationships with) that they had the potential to be something greater, before things intervened in this history.

...How much did we tell her about Comet's role in Twilight's condition?
I'm really wondering how much we told her about Twilight too. Given she is at "Confidant" level, I would be inclined to believe we told her the whole truth, the cult's involvement, how we blame ourselves, and how Twilight was a hair away from figuring things out. I wouldn't be surprised if she left out Comet's involvement, though. We didn't necessarily see Comet mistreat Twilight or anything, so maybe we did mention it, though one could say he was still an accomplice in holding and transporting her.

I wonder what we told her about Twilight because there is a chance Fluttershy tries to help of her own volition somehow... please 🥺... I guess I wouldn't necessarily count on it since they are at season 1's friendship level and have only known each other a short time. But I will continue hoping/praying we can be friends again, and that Twilight doesn't just sit on the sidelines indefinitely, become a rival, or attempt to become a rival but quietly drive herself insane again.

And even answering some of Fluttershy's questions about Edge, or at least clarifying some of the things that she realized Comet was doing and that she noticed, even if the stallion didn't realize it.
...will she end up Main Winter and minor edge?

it kinda fits her, honestly.
Hmm... quite possibly! The rage of edge tempered by the coolness and control of winter. Another idea: heart, due to her care for animals (Soft Sweeps's affinity was said to be heart because she had a caring personality, at least before the Catastrophe). And sorry if we had this discussion while I wasn't here. :V Has someone done a full Mane 6 lore affinity prediction yet? In any case, it would be interesting to see a pony with only one affinity in Fluttershy. Actually...
You have not been able to piece together what other affinity she has, if she even has a secondary affinity at all.
-Fluttershy, great [WINTER] lesser [UNKNOWN]:
...these two quotes seem to be contradictory; it feels like the latter is implying/leaking the fact that there is a lesser affinity in Bird's notes. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it. :V

Not related to this update at all/I meant to reply to this awhile ago...

I actually come more from the MLP side, and when I first tried CS I couldn't get into it due to how unwieldy it felt.
As someone from the MLP side who enjoys fanfics and quests a lot, I've searched the MLP quest landscape high and low; here's what I know.
  • d20 Pony (first update) is an actively updated, high quality, and very long running MLP quest that I follow. It did evolve quite a bit when it went from daily to longer weekly updates, but generally, decision points come much more frequently than a quest like this one. The tone is significantly different than this one; I'd describe it as adventure plus slice of life, with an optimistic tone. Also, all the status screens and the homepage are for the current state, if you care about spoilers.
  • The latter is unfortunately inactive/unfinished, but Shades of Twilight and its sequel The Equestrian Equation are really good Mass Effect x MLP crossover quests.
  • There was a site called anonpone.com that hosted numerous (4chan-style) MLP quests, but sadly, it went down 😢. You can at least see what it looked like in web.archive.org (link).
  • There are still some quests that pop up from time to time on 4chan's /mlp/ board, but I don't blame you if you don't want to hang out there.
As you can see, it's far less prolific than the fanfiction scene, but there are still some active, high-quality examples like d20 Pony and this quest. :)

Admittedly there have been a few things people have considered blasting with the Elements, but yeah, none of them were really a Victory as far as we know.

A level 7 book is probably the last will of an Hour, isn't it? The last true fragment of their power, waiting.

Yeah, but it's not like we know the resting place of an Hour though, especially not one which promised some last remnant to take back to the waking world.

Wait a second... We do.

Yeah, I'm wondering if we really ought to get working on that Winter Sacrament. I sorta forgot about the above, but it makes the alternative to getting the Sacrament essentially leaving the Sun-in-Rags to Windy... (Or maybe I should think of him as more of a threat than I have been).

I am fine with doing winter sacrament, and even the lantern. But if we try to have the Conversation with Marinette she's 100% going to cotton on and break her bonds in response.
Clearly we just need to channel enough Moth she can't tell what we are doing until it's too late, since Moth subverts Grail.

More seriously, I do wonder if part of taking down Marinette would involve using some form of Moth to make your chosen champion immune to her grailness like the MoA used scars to make the Colonel immune to getting eviscerated by the Seven Coils.

Subversion isn't really that direct in most cases. Even if it was, it's about changing one Lore into another, not necessarily one Lore being immune to another. There's also the matter that Winter is the lore used to resist General mental fuckery, not Moth.

In this case the idea in my head would be to turn Mareinette's grail-messaging mind-whammies into harmless mothy babbling through, I don't know, special beeswax or something, moth loves its bugs and buzzing. Make so there's no need to resist at all. Just spitballing eldritch ideas since this is partially a setting where you can scab yourself into invincibility.

…Bro, that's just changing one mind whammy for another mind whammy. Moth is far from Harmless. :V

I do take your point that there probably are novel ways to resist, though the real problem isn't so much not being grailed into the ground as it is, you know, actually killing Marinette. Which is hard enough on its own.

She's a skeleton, you just gotta use blunt damage. All these Edge people keep using slashing damage and wonder why it doesn't work, smh.

More seriously yeah, it's hard killing a Heart Name.

Stop Doing Occultism! (A Lunar Bureau Flier[?])
Shortly after Celestia's announcement to Equestria of the discovery of a new branch of magic, this poster was found attached to the main door of the Lunar Bureau's publicly accessible offices. The culprit is still at large, and any information about their possible location should be reported to the Royal Guard immediately.

hey @BirdBodhisattva you once said we skipped over a very easy expedition you meant for us to complete early, to get a good artifact that would have helped us a lot.

I'm curious: have we outgrown the usefulness of that expedition?
I don't think you outgrew it. Even a Level 3 artifact is still very useful nowadays, given the low level of your Confidantes. Granted, Velvet being an overachieving generalist helps you a lot, but she still is limited by how many personal actions she has. So an artifact at the hands of an otherwise inept Confidante means that a pony without a Lore can cast rituals as well as a Level 3 Velvet.

Also, @BirdBodhisattva since I don't think you answered, can we use summoned minions for the Conversation, or do they have to be normal Ponies?
No. Only normal ponies.

Fresh off the presses of the Lunar Bureau, a poster warning against the dangers of occultism in the style of the infamous "Stop Doing Math".
I love this! :V
