Dungeon Crawler You!

Something to note about Doppelgangers : they don't so much "automatically change shape" as "painfully and manually reshape themselves". It's a skill she'll have to practice. Copying a specific person or race is difficult (especially without a mirror), and even just looking good is actually quite hard.
There's another shapechanger race out that which can easily do all that, and that's changeling. It's not accessible to us. A shame, because while Changeling can't pull the metal bodymass tricks that Doppelganger can, Changeling can copy various magical properties of other forms. Doppelganger cannot.
For example, becoming a Medusa would let a changeling use her deadly gaze, but a Doppelganger cannot. On the other hand a Doppelganger wearing full armor can pull lots of metal-shaping tricks that a Changeling cannot, and a Doppelganger does not have the "you must have touched this race to turn into it" limitation that a Changeling does.

Same, so far there appear to be four of us voting for it, but I kinda hope more people go for it. I'm curious what kind of cool powers Leo could get.
The only reason I'm not actively campaigning for it and am instead also supporting the Doppleganger version is that I completely understand the decision to give at least one of us a Race we know will be good at combat. We have no idea what the subspecies will actually give her, and the base abilities alone are nowhere near enough to qualify as a good combat race.

For those of you voting for Wheeler Dealer + Sysop, are you ok if the end of the quest is that we bankrupt Borant and end the crawl early "winning" that way? Not that it's for sure what's going to happen but it seems to be the the main idea behind the build combo.

Or do you want to explore at beat the entire dungeon?

This choice is going to change things I believe. Also celestials are good and can make a crawler good, but in canon Carl absolutely bodies the guy that is one of those crawlers, so I'm not sure if they are enough to keep us at the top.

Catgirls definitely have memetic appeal.. but it would have been nice to have more of an estimation of the subspecies first to see if it holds up to the munchkin potential of doppelganger. Maybe if it had something like nine lives or something..

The main problem with doppelganger is resource and skill. We have a manager to talk us through though and Taylor hoarding stuff in his inventory. We'd be able to pull through the first bit.

Ambition is cheap and spite is the most powerful human emotion.

I'm going to be honest, while I'm sure Rollup can get to the point of turning Bronzes into Celestials through some change to its scaling at a multiple of 5 so that it can actually trigger the 1375 times needed to complete that set instead of being limited to one trigger per Skill Level so you need level 9 to turn 64 Platinums into 1 Celestial and can only somewhat expand it down into Gold, I wouldn't care if it actually doesn't or gets preemptively nerfed ahead of time. What I want is the ability to get dozens of Gold and Platinum boxes early instead of using our trash Bronzes and eventually having Silvers in the same position as trash.

The synergy between it an Sysop is really nice, but I needed it pointed out to me. The thing that got me excited about Sysop is spreading around Character Actor and whatever similarly broken personal Actionables we end up picking up later.

Edit: hell, I'm considering having Taylor give himself Character Actor immediately on Floor Three instead of shortly before they leave and just ignore the possibility of using anything else from it until later, besides giving Leo Moose's boxes before we leave the saferoom so he can. This would dramatically mitigate the immediate danger of the option by letting him focus on a combat class for now.

First the next book is being released on royal road and now a quest!
I wish I had found this sooner.

This going to be fun.

[X] Plan Catkin Leo

Wdss Multacorplan is taking Off? Neat.
[X] Plan: Wheeling, Dealing, System Screwing Multacorpalan

Being straight: Remember that it's a narrative quest and Taylor has plot armor. If your *only* reason for not giving him Scion is because you're worried about his survival, that's not an issue. If you don't want to read about slug boy, or if you think the temporary harm to socials is too big a deal, that's a totally valid reason not to want to do it.
For the slug look there is SysOp'ing the Bodysculpting skill and for socials there is that+ letting cha boosted Drew do the talking for a while.

I think this is the only legal vote with Sysop plus Wheeler Dealer that has a possibly of wining?

I agree that basically making a super class with Sysop is appealing, though I will note there are going to be some problems with it
1) Using the ability to transfer actionables turns off the rest of Sysop for the floor, so we can wait until the end of the floor if we can accurately predict that and aren't forced to travel down early and it might work
2) Can't be in a safe room when using the ability for an hour
3) We get the actionables at level 1, and later on it might be harder to level some of these things based on how Levi explained xp

So I'm going to take another stab at a more traditional build though I realize it's an uphill battle.

Klepto allows for some shenanigans and levels faster because of the pickpocket xp bonus, and Crognan provides an outlet for that xp, she'll be using it to throw globs of time.

Scion and Archmage, because Archmage is not an Earth class so Scion can keep the transform race open and see what happens. Archmage is also actually getting slept on a bit, it gets powerful spells at the start and gets more powerful as it levels. 4 Points can turn any spell to 1MP cost.

[X] Dungeon Crawling
-[X] Leo gets Crognan and Battle Klepto
-[X] Taylor gets Scion of Zree and Archmage
-[X] Drew Picks Democratic Senator

Voting is open for at least another 24ish hours, and "Plan Catkin Leo" is rising. It could surpass it in time, especially if you add a vote towards it :p
Also, there's at least one person (me) currently voting for both WDSSM and Catkin Leo who would remove their vote from everything other than Catkin Leo if it looked like it has a good shot at winning.

What kind of advantages are you even expecting from Catkin?
Doppelganger has +10 Constitution, a massive ability to tank damage, the ability to grow weapons and tools out of various materials, and if you can get big enough armor this scales really well and allows for a lot of player creativity (always good in a quest).
Meanwhile at best Catkin will be some sensory, melee or agility boons. Eh.

Accept that yes, vaccines save lives and no, they do not have microchips in them
Hey eaglejarl, is that actually true?
We see in canon that every human had some kind of brain chip (in the epilogue where Bea got captured). Maybe they were applied by alien tech magic, but seeing as the aliens have been on earth since the 1930s it makes a lot of sense for the mass-vaccine programs to have actually been used to microchip earth's population...

Leo can probably learn to make cat ears with practice. She seemed the most taken with that race too in the Q&A. She's a teenager, she'll go wild with customization. Eventually. I wonder if Taylor packed anything to significantly build up biomass? He'd have to sacrifice utilities..

Also we'll have to try give Leo a different spin than what Katya went with.. maybe have her practice to shift arm into a lance or something while skating. Suction pads or hooks that turn into screws to let her cling to walls or ceilling in case of a gravity mishap. Or glider arm wings. Create pockets of compressed smoke for Drew, or Napalm for Taylor.

Personally, when we're told that the subspecies available are really, really good, I'm hoping that there are even better ones than the obvious options of Schrodinger's Catkin and Copy-Cat(kin). The point of picking Catkin is that we're betting on it being affected by Drew's Tir Inqua Luck Aura to make it something on that level or better.

So it goes with mystery boxes. A doppelganger gives +10 Constitution and weapons and armor, but a catkin could be anything! It could even give +10 Constitution and weapons and armor!

More seriously, when it comes to gambling with unknown risks and payouts, I'm more of a mind for 'a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush'. It's not just a matter of rolling in the upper percentiles of subspecies, we don't even know what 'top 10 catkin subspecies' looks like. It could be that none of the top races are as good as Doppelganger, and no amount of luck will make it a good choice. It could be that some of them are better than Doppelganger. We have no way of knowing, and that's before the question of whether we'll get one of the actually good ones. We don't know if Drew's luck aura will do anything here, so that's a third layer of uncertainty if you want to look at it that way.

Really, it just feels like way too much a blind shot in the dark for my tastes. It's not really a plan or a strategy, doesn't make me feel like the result is clever or earned or anything, it's just throwing ourselves into freefall and hoping there's a mattress beneath us.

Top five classes for Drew to pick in layer 3, in order :
  1. Elemental Arcanist (Fire). Instantly gaining a bunch of very effective fire spells? Having those spells at a reduced mana cost to compensate for our lack of mana-regen tricks? That gives the group the kind of ranged firepower they're currently rather running out of, which is especially important as we're going to a Skyfowl layer with a bunch fo flying enemies. It also synergises well with Pyrophilia.
    • I know this is a weird choice, because this class didn't do so well in the earlier voting. But it neatly solves our biggest upcoming tactical problem for this layer (flying foes), and having the drawback be for a single layer seriously mitigates it (no chance we'll be stuck as a fire mage on a water layer, or something). Instead, taking this early means we can level the spells now when level 4 is still decent enough to be combat-relevant.
  2. Local-Access TV Psychic. The Silver-Tongued Liar skill is amazing on a high-Cha build like Drew, and his +15% leveling for Cha-based skills means we'll definitely manage to level it. That means we keep this insanely amazing skill! If this class granted any direct combat things, I'd take it on the spot.
  3. Vegas Strip Magician. No attack powers, which is a shame. But taking Translocate now and levelling it will definitely pay off later, and getting Sleight of Hand will go well with his luck powers.
    • If I thought we could keep the "no penalty for stealing equipped items" I'd have suggested Battle Klepto. Instead, Vegas Strip Magician provides an excellent spell + the chance to get the fun hand-trickery skill.
  4. Barbarian. In the short-term this is a solid combat class with a Gold item (excellent), and we're likely to get something great as gear considering our luck aura. In the long term, taking Pathfinder now will definitely pay off. And Pathfinder will be super useful this level - remember that we're leaving the tunnel environment and entering wide open spaces, forests, etc.
  5. Wizard Supremacist. Powerful, grants an amazing class, but we lack any kind of mana-booster or health regen trick. Without any way to mitigate the drawbacks of this class it gets downgraded a bunch, but it's got so many fantastic options that we're sure to get at least one.
Note that I am NOT including Democratic Senator among these good classes. Here's why :
  • Universal Health Care requires a total party wealth of 20 000gp to even activate. Sure it's one of the best parts of the class, but we don't have that kind of money and we didn't take any wealth cheats.
  • Gun Control Legislation affects our attacks too. Not great.
  • Voter Protection Legislation is a good skill that I'd be happy to have. Fair enough.
  • Climate Change Reduction Efforts is nothing awe-inspiring, but it is nice to have.
  • Public Education Funding is a +1% XP modifier with a 3m range. There's also no obvious way to grind or level it, so we might well lose it entirely by the end of the level.

Therefore :
[X] (Drew) Elemental Arcanist : Fire
