Dungeon Crawler You!

We should try to fight an Oni to see their tactics etc. And prepare accordingly.
Possibly, un-enrapture another to see how it goes. (As a reader of DCC, I know we can befriend NPCs somewhat. They're not quite sentient, but they're thinking beings)

We saw they bring certain plant juice. Maybe we can see how we can exploit that. Spill it?
Use the corrosive properties etc.

[X] Accept the help. Borough Bosses are no joke, we'll need them and they need us.

I'm thinking we have a second chance here, these guys have actually done nothing to us at this point.

The boss is something that is mind controlling and using the mind controlled oni is gather and brew for them. It's unclear whether the brew causes more mind control or that is an effect of the boss and the brew does something else. If we had Mordecai from DCC we could gather up the ingredients in the wild and ask him what it makes, I'm unsure if our own guide has the same knowledge or even if Mordecai would be able to help before he became Donut's manager. Could still get the ingredients from the wild and test how flammable they are, if we need to explode a boss.

[X] Plan Trust then Verify
-[X] Choose to trust Luke's group, ask them for their group's makeup and fighting style, do they have anyone tough that would generally fit the "tank" role, does the assassin like crawler have any stealth skills?
-[X] Take the scrolls and use 1 to free an enraptured Oni and find out what the deal is with the Boss and what they are brewing
-[X] Use an info that we receive to try and get an advantage in the fight
-[X] Take all fighters that volunteer, give each person a health potion and the mana potion for the those that have spells
-[X] Your party and Luke's party will use the scrolls of Mind defense (Moose included) before the boss fight, also each person gets a health potion and mana potion.
-[X] Give the "tank" from Luke's group the infuriate potion for the level 10 Taunt as well as the Shield Scroll
-[X] If the "assassin" has stealth skills give him the coins and explain how they work to him as well as using them for to start the fight
-[X] Have Leo use the Fog Scrolls to create zones that the mobs can't see into for crawlers to pop in and out of
-[X] If Fireball is an aoe scroll, save it for later in the fight when Taylor can use the banner followed by pyrophilia on the tank and then the scroll to both heal the tank and damage the boss.
-[X] Explain all these tactics to the groups

My hope with hitting an Oni with a scroll is that they'll be pissed that they're mind-controlled and just dump intel on us. Fighting them isn't a big priority for me.
Same.
I'd like to start the second level six hours early.
Why? Everyone starts the second level at the same time. Better to spend the time after beating the boss resting or finding more bosses.

As far as 'if we can't beat it', again, agreeing and disagreeing. When we take on the boss, we're doing so with 7 high-level companions, our crew, a team to handle support/mob maintenance, and we have a 90% chance of landing a tenth-level spell followed by an eight-level spell. That evens the odds quite a bit IMO.
Nothing wrong with taking extra people to talk with the ogre as security.
We have 24 hours until the level collapses. We need to spend eight of them resting. I'd like to start the second level six hours early. I don't think that taking out a neighbourhood boss in that time is realistic, to say nothing of 'several', to say nothing of the potential resource burn that comes with fighting a boss like that with people we don't know. It's also unclear to me that partying up and taking out a boss would push any of Charlie's people over the top.
Fair enough, I'll concede that 'several' is far too optimistic, and you've got a point that our consumables are likely to be what will help us beat the Borough Boss, and we can't use them as prep. However, fighting and beating a neighborhood boss can't be both too dangerous and also worth not enough xp. Either it'll be easy, or it will be lucrative. Second, even if it doesn't have enough xp to tip them over to higher levels, they'll still get items and achievements, things that may make the upcoming fight more survivable, plus real experience in working as a raid group.

[X] Action Plan: Playing the Odds

Quite like this plan, not sure if it's size is a problem for EJ but i agree on the rivalry idea

Why? Everyone starts the second level at the same time. Better to spend the time after beating the boss resting or finding more bosses.

if you go before 6 hours are left you get frozen till it's time, but if you go with 6 or less hours remaining you get a headstart

Why? Everyone starts the second level at the same time. Better to spend the time after beating the boss resting or finding more bosses.
No:
If you exit no more than 6 hours before collapse you get an early start. If you are more than 6hours early you get paused.
And those 6 hours could be the chance to be the first to do something achievment or even recap worthy.

Also on the Team makeup question:
We may need to actively guard against "enrapture" using our scrolls. To big a Team may make that Impossible.

From Discord..

" In some stories it is implied that kitsune and oni do not get along. Like the Phoenix and Dragon they would appear to be foils to each other in many ways and tend to clash from time to time."
Smoke form Kitsune raid distraction
Also did Taylor pack any soybeans or sardines cause

"Long ago oni could be repelled by the stench of burning sardines and other methods, but today it is most popular to toss soybeans (which oni are said to hate) and shout "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" ("Out with demons! In with happiness!")"
Burned soybean smoke kitsunes
I imagine Taylor took an offline copy of wiki that with his crazy preparedness schtick

EJ: Taylor packed pretty much whatever y'all want unless I think it's not something he would have packed. You want soybeans, you can have soybeans.

So.. should we go around handing all the combatants our soybeans? Have Drew burn a bunch of them too, to fill a gas canister with burnt soyabean smoke to smokebomb and make kitsune shapes out of. It's a good supplement to all the other plans.

Edit:

-[X] Distribute soybeans to all of the fighters and Oni lore about their aversion.
-[X] Drew burns the rest of the soyabeans and collects the smoke. Sardine smoke as well for good measure.
-[X] Practices making Kitsune shape smoke-forms.

Does someone who goes into the second floor five hours early reach it an hour before someone who goes in four hours early? Also, does Taylor actually know about this? I Control-Fed through the reader mode, found nothing.

This strains belief. Why would he have thought he needed soybeans?

Yes.

To quote the relevant chapter:
If you prematurely descend, you are held in stasis until the collapse.
[...]
We recommend descending to the next floor no earlier than six hours before the scheduled collapse. If you descend during that window, there will be no stasis involved, and you'll actually get a head start over those who came before you.
We are now populating the staircases down to level 2. Remember, everyone: only go down the stairs early if you absolutely have to. Once you descend to the next floor, you can't go back up. Also, we're trying something new this season. If you prematurely descend, you are held in stasis until the collapse. So those of you working on your social numbers, keep that in mind. Viewers tend to lose interest quickly, and you'll shed favorites if you're not accessible for a couple days before the floor above collapses. We recommend descending to the next floor no earlier than six hours before the scheduled collapse. If you descend during that window, there will be no stasis involved, and you'll actually get a head start over those who came before you.

Heads up that you do one X in braces (brackets?) at the top of a plan; anything under it becomes the plan. Right now you have each line of your plan as an individual plan.

Do you mean to talk to the oni? I imagine so (oni to ogre is a short hop) but what you were replying to was about the boss.

I think that one is too optimistic.

We have 24 hours. We're going to spend at least eight of those resting. We're going to go down six hours early, or as near as possible. That leaves us with ten hours. At least three are going to go to drilling and training with our new comrades and brainstorming/planning for the boss.

For finding a neighbourhood boss to be worth it, we'd need to find them and defeat them within seven hours while bringing along much squishier combatants who might get fucked up or killed in the process. The best-case outcome is that we snag some good loot, experience working together, and maybe our hangers-on level a bit.

The worst-case scenario is that some of Charlie's folks get fucked up and their confidence in us is shaken, we burn a bunch of resources because we haven't had the time to do a proper recon, and we get fucked up so we're going into the plant-boss fight less-than-optimal.

I don't see a good ROI here. Something that might make sense is rushing a neighbourhood with Luke's crew: I don't know if they'd want to work with us, but it's far more important that we're good at coordinating with them as they'll actually be involved in the boss fight: Charlie's people can drill independently and they're going to be managing mobs while we deal with the boss anyway.

Feel free to fork my plan (copy large chunks and post it as your plan) if you're passionate about it - below is the final-ish incarnation unless someone has some really good ideas I've left out.
[X] Action Plan: Playing the Odds
  • Accept Luke's offer.
    • Leo might not love it, but you'll manage your people if he manages his.
    • Don't display weakness or apologize; you're men, making a deal as men.
  • Recruit fighters from Charlie's camp. (Goal: outnumber Luke and co. 2:1)
    • Take anyone level 5+ who's willing to go; if fewer than needed, go by level.
    • Brief them on Luke: be honest about what you did, but be clear they're a threat. Watch our back; we'll watch yours.
  • Don't let the religious nut join the strike force.
    • Ideally, he never finds out about it.
    • Get a few people who aren't coming to the fight to make sure he doesn't interfere or try to steal the kill.
    • If he makes a fuss, make a j'accuse speech calling out his predatory behaviour and bounce with whoever will follow.
  • Approach a non-stupid Oni.
    • Try Brain Barrier it (give it a scroll?). If successful, pump it for intelligence. What's it gathering? What's the boss like? You're looking for an edge, or the trick.
    • Try to poison/sabotage whatever it's gathering.
    • See if soybean-and-anchovy smoke kitsune are distracting/effective - you brought Wikipedia, so bone up on folklore!
    • If it doesn't cooperate, kill it.
  • Hunt monsters (plants/Oni) in the area to get familiar with them/practice with your new comrades.
    • Have Levi critique your performance.
    • Ask him about Luke and co. Any tips? Does the AI generally set up rivalries like this?
  • The fight:
    • Brainstorm with everyone beforehand.
      • Discuss abilities/resources.
      • Designate roles/teams (monster management, battlefield control, support, boss strikers).
      • Distribute mundane resources (barriers, acid neutralizer, etc.) and run drills.
      • Distribute Brain Barrier scrolls to key individuals - boss might try mind control.
      • Lean hard on any intelligence you got from the Oni.
      • Talk about previous boss experiences and see if there's themes to the weaknesses.
    • Start six hours before the collapse.
    • Drop the banner ASAP so it covers as much space as possible. Designate someone(s?) to run smoke/fog scrolls: keep monsters off-balance. (Have Drew coordinate that?)
    • Designate someone highly mobile (nominate Calliope if she's willing) to use the protection scroll, and then to get close to the boss and start flinging coins. Stop when you get a lance; throw the fireball (from within the banner) when you do. Two big spells should do a hell of a lot of damage.
      • Goal is a fast, decisive victory. Looks good on TV and minimizes risk.

I think that "-[x] foo" is how you tag something as a sub-item of a vote. I'm not familiar with those or how they work with the tally system -- @Sickul , can you edumacate me? Regardless, if you want to simply have a bunch of text, that's fine.

Well he did go on a grocery run before coming here.. He'd have picked up non-perishables like dried food and canned sardines I guess?
It seems perfectly reasonable that we would have stacked provisions and that in doing so, we would have bought a little bit of everything on the off-chance it might be useful.

Even if we didn't, we can almost certainly ask the wire wool people for a soybean dish and take some out of the room.

@eaglejarl is it safe to assume that we would have looked through the corpse of the mad doctor and taken any personal loot (his scalpel?) that qualified as dungeon-made? I imagine we would have tossed the corpses while cleaning up.

(It was pointed out that Drew is alone in not having a cool weapon.)

It depends on how you run the tally I believe, I usually see it run by block in which case each -[] indicates a subvote and to vote the entire plan only the title is needed. The benefits are that it's easier to see the plans people are voting for by looking at the tally, and the vote is more modular letting people add and subtract parts they like/dislike for their own plan, which seems to really lower the barrier for people making plans.

I'll do my plan however @eaglejarl would prefer going forward though.

Here's a couple of things my plan is doing and why I think everyone should vote for it.

Trusting Luke's Group - They are higher level and most likely have someone better suited to the tank role than we do. I have no desire to risk Leo or Moose on what is going to be the toughest opponent yet when we can instead kit out their tank with the potions to do the job better. Our interests align here, we both want the boss dead and kitting them out let's them take the brunt of things.

PreScrolling BrainBarrier - We know for a fact that the boss can mindcontrol, we have exactly enough Scrolls to use on our party and Luke's with 1 leftover to free an oni for interrogation. Because it provides protection there's no reason to be reactive and instead protect the highest levels and the biggest factors in the fight.

Fireballing Early- These boss fights seem scripted like a raid boss sometimes and do things crazier things when they are low health, so while that could be a reason to not fireball early I'm unsure if this boss will be like that. The reason I think we should wait though is because Pyrophilia is targetable and Fireball is most often an aoe attack, done right this should function as a powerful attack and a complete heal on the tank.

Yes, you can assume you checked the bodies, since it was called out in the update that you were looting everything not nailed down.

PSA: Minor clarification to chapter 12.

  • 3 single-use silver coins. When flipped, they will either blast a target mob with a level 10 Force Lance spell (if they land heads) or heal them to 100% (if they land tails). They can only target mobs within 20' of the person flipping the coin.

I'll freely admit that this is a little long, but a decent chunk of it seems like offscreen prep. The tl;dr is to prep and then go all-in on the coins (one in eight odds we don't get a lance) followed by a fireball.

I think having Levi critique our general approach to the plant creatures is one of the better ideas I have here; refining our technique will be important. We want this to flow.

Suggestion: be mindful of what equipment you show off in front of Luke's party. The boss may be a kitchen sink encounter, but it's best not to give the party any extra incentive to let you die (or finish you off once loot boxes have been opened) in order to loot your bodies. The same can be said of abilities--e.g. if there's good reason to believe the boss will be immune to Drew's smoke, it would be best to hold that back as a trump card in case of post-boss conflict.

I'm surprised everyone is so leery of Luke's group, not that they are harmless of course, but Luke himself seems to have an iron grip on the group and looks to be pretty calm and rational. If he dies then sure we might be in trouble as the rest of his group is wild, but as is we can probably expect him to act in his group's self interest, it would take an extraordinary piece of loot to be worth the 3 skulls it would take minimum to kill us without witnesses, more if there's members of Charlie's group there.

And there really wouldn't be a good time for them to betray us, during the fight and they risk failing the encounter killing everyone, afterwards and everyone is right next to the stairs down and they risk a witness escaping.

It feels like we are the ones poisoning relations between us and in trying to limit the fallout of a potential betrayal we are probably increasing the likelihood of one.
