Disciples of Red Dew Sect (Cultivation Riot Quest)

Excellent job on the beast tide disciples... I see many of you are wary and hurt. But let it be known that good work will go rewarded here.

I have recently improved the Red Dew School technique to the copper grade and as a reward this new version shall be freely available to you all!

Take the book out of the sect compound and be crippled.

Stan Li was so absorbed in learning the red dew technique that he didn't really notice what was going on outside the sect. But he is happy that his senior disciples performed so well during the crisis.

Hawk stands up from underneath five spirit wolf bodies. His body is covered in scratches, cuts, and bloody marks but nothing too serious. He wouldn't need to spend sometime healing today. However, despite surviving, his expression was one of slight...disappointment. Not at the battle or anything like that. He was glad that most of his fellow Red Dew Disciples lived through the fight. And it was certainly amazing to see so many of his fellows accomplish their goals or survive when others would have fallen.

But...he hadn't really gained much in terms of Insight. He was still no closer to reaching Soldier like his three peers had. He had no enlightment to draw upon from this battle.

He looked down at his bloodied hand, turned it into a fist, then went off to check on Sister Wuyin and any other Disciples that might need a hand regaining their strength.

The path of a Cultivator was long and hard. And he wasn't one to give up easily.

The Numbers, What Do They Mean!?
In the wake of the Beast Tide, as armies of Disciples are dispatched from Red Dew Mountain to begin the arduous task of picking up the pieces from the colossal masses of spirit beasts that had emerged from the depths of the Ancient Devil Forest, they would report a mysterious series of scribbles being seen all over the Sect. While this was a somewhat familiar sight to many of the Disciples, as was the messy handwriting and raving language, these scribbles were a bit more chaotic than previous entries.

Numbers and strange equations were scattered seemingly at random between garbled lines of texts, writing of elements, beasts, interactions, statistics, calculations, predictions, Giant Hands, and squirrels, for some reason.

Alongside the text were fragments of crude maps, marked with X's in seemingly random locations located across the Red Dew Mountain.

If one followed those maps long enough, they would eventually arrive at the final series of scribbles, this one etched into the stone of the underside of a mossy boulder.

Did... Wuyin carve this with her sword?

That might explain the handwriting, at least.

Wuyin's Declassified Sect Survival Guide - Special Edition! : The Numbers, What Do They Mean!?

Hello again fellow Disciples! It is I, Sect Sister Wuyin, here today with a special edition of the Guide!

What makes this so special you may ask? Well you shouldn't ask that, because you followed by ramblings all the here, so I hope you have a damn good reason to start questioning me now of all times!

Regardless, this edition of the Guide serves as an optional addendum to my existing entries! You don't have to be here! But the scavenger hunt was fun wasn't it?

Anyway, after a fair bit of discussion on Discord (Please join it, a lot of important stuff gets talked about there, and yes, I know that doesn't make sense. Don't worry, you'll know what it is.) it was recently revealed that the method to determine the number of successes a Disciple scores for a given action has changed!

No longer are we subject to the whims of the dice rolling above our heads by the Giant Hand in the Sky! Now we're only partially subject to their whims? Some of us more than others!

Without further ado, the equation that decides success and failure, victory from defeat is....:

(Spirit + Body + Fortune + Relevant Attribute + Qi + Techniques + Other)(Chance of success) + (Number of successes rolled on Fortune Dice) = Total Successes

Now, none of that makes any sense to any of you. It might not even make sense for me!

So let me break it down to you in a way you won't understand but will still understand.

Spirit, Body, and Fortune are your attributes. If you don't know what those are, go back to the first edition of the Guide! Regardless, these contribute successes based on their grade, with Clay giving 1, Copper 2, etc.

Relevant Attribute is essentially the attribute that makes the most sense for the type of action you're doing! If you're doing something brainy, like training a technique or studying a recipe, you'll use Spirit! If you're doing something brawny, like wrestling a bear or carving a statue, then you'll use Body! Fortune, sadly, can never be a relevant attribute! Boo! But also probably for the best, and for the sake of the Giant Hand in Sky's sanity. Carpal tunnel from rolling too many dice is no joke!

Qi is the number of bonus dice you get from spending Qi on techniques! Certain techniques allow a cultivator to spend Qi for additional dice! Additionally, any Disciple who has achieved the Tempered Heart may spend 1 Qi to gain 1 extra die on any action! Please remember to do this, because it's basically a free die since you regenerate 1 Qi every turn by default!

Techniques is exactly what you think it is: the number of dice your techniques contribute to an action! This is based off their grade, and follows the same scale that attributes do! Now, you'll note that I said techniques, and yes that does mean what you think it means: Multiple techniques can now contribute dice to an action! This was done mostly for the sanity of the Giant Hand as having to check exactly which technique applies to which action took a lot of time! That being said, I wouldn't recommend testing the Giant Hand's patience on this one! Don't start trying to use crafting techniques to swing swords into people's faces now!

Other covers any other bonus dice. These can come from medicines, tutoring, really just about anything that helps you do a thing! It's Other, what else did you expect!

Chance of success is the chance of a die rolling a success! By default, this value is 0.5. It can be increased by having an NPC friend or a Spirit Beast Companion, or having an elemental bonus by facing an enemy you overcome elementally! It is decreased by being injured!

Finally, Successes rolled on Fortune dice is a bit more complicated. See, despite the fact that technically everything I mentioned before hand contributed "dice", up till this point, absolutely no dice have been rolled! Since it was becoming a pain in the ass for the Giant Hand to roll so many dice, they have simplified the system such that Disciples now simply generate successes based on the average result they would have gotten had they rolled all of their dice, rounded normally (So up if a fractional success is .5 or above, and down if .4 or lower)! Much simpler, and much more reliable and predictable!

But, there is still an element of randomness in the form of Fortune dice! Based on the grade of a Disciple's fortune, a number of d10s are rolled. If they roll above a certain number, which is 5 by default, then additional successes are added onto the result!

Now, I'm sure that's a lot to take in, so I'll save you some trouble and headaches and tell you some of the implications of this system:
- Spirit/Body Cultivators are now INCREDIBLY consistent! They will always score the same number of successes for an action within a range of 1 success. The trade-off is that their performance suffers quite a bit if they take actions which don't have their focus attribute as their main attribute! So if you're a Body/Spirit cultivator, consider very carefully if the action you're taking uses Body or Spirit as it's relevant attribute! When in doubt, you can always ask the Giant Hand in the Sky about which attribute is relevant!
- Fortune Cultivators have the benefit of their performance being the same regardless of what action they take, but in return, while they will match or exceed the performance of a Body/Spirit Cultivator about 2/3rds of the time, there will always be a 1/3rd chance of rolling lower! Such is the whims of fortune!

Finally, here's a bit of a bummer to end on: Training techniques has gotten a lot harder! It now no longer requires 3 successes to improve the grade of a technique, but it now requires 9! Ouch!

Anyway, that's the end of this addendum. Don't hold your breath for anything else like this for a while, barring something dramatic happening like the Giant Hand in Sky changing the fundamental rules governing this world again. So y'know. Could happen?

Good luck out there Disciples!

P.S: Path of Calculation Insights Please!

Wuyin, still reeling and somewhat incoherent from all that she'd seen through the Rainbow Eyes, stands on a box she'd gotten from.... somewhere, in front of the now empty mission board as the Disciples milled about between their duties and their training. She would have stood on the barrel, but Hanyi had gotten all of them. ALL, of them.

Well, at least he made good use of them.

She clears her throat, and once more raises her voice to the milling Disciples. To the Sect at large, Wuyin was still a largely unknown mercurial persona. That being said, there were always bored people around, and watching a crazy girl spout nonsense could be entertaining for a few minutes or so.

Wuyin takes in a breath after having shouted that much to the various disciples. Most of that shouted didn't seem to make any sense? Attributes? Tempered organs failing to be used? And what the heck was a LinkOnScepter? Surely none of this made sense to anyone?

Regardless, Wuyin had seemed like she was finished, having stepped down from her crate....

Only to realize she'd forgotten something and stepping right back onto the crate and shouting loudly once more!

"Oh, and for my fellow PC Disciples! Yes, you know who you are! I'm sure we all remember those hard-scrabble days we spent a little over a year ago desperately trying to cultivate and improve despite our heavily limited means! Well, for some of us, those days have only just started! So I would humbly ask if anyone of us are willing to donate resources, be they medicines or spirit stones for the weakest and newest among us, to spare them some of the pain their Seniors had to endure, and to show them that the star of the Red Dew Sect rises ever higher! Thank you, that will be all!"

And finally, finally, the mad girl stepped off her crate and wandered off to do who knows what who knows where.

Huh. I thought I had increased my attributes already. Okay.

"I don't mean to dictate your cultivation Bird-Monkey, but I would suggest gaining Gold Body by placing both of your organs on Body! This will grant you a bonus when you breakthrough!"

"Ah, thank you Sister Wuyin. And, do not worry. I see your council as extremely insightful. As I am certain many other Disciples do."

I have, in fact, used my Tempered Stomach to increase my attributes. I started off with a Sword Technique already learned, so Tempering my Stomach pushed my Spirit up to Gold, and that is as high as it will go.

Also, Sword 2? If I claim to be Sword 2, who dares call themself Sword 1? Among the disciples of my generation, I am the most skilled in Swordsmanship, who could you be referring to as Sword 1 in this case?

huh, now that I think about it, I have not seen Brother Jian Ke in a while. Did he make it out of the Beast Wave alright?

Edit: He lives, he just failed to get a notable mention.

"That is a question you can answer for yourself! But yes, he's fine. No injuries, made it out with plenty of blood on his sword, or so the rumors, and Jian Ke himself, would probably say! As expected of the Rumored Blade, AKA Sword 1. Ah... woops."

He doesn't even know any Sword techniques! Even wounded as I am, I could best him in a duel! How could you insult me like this, Sister Wuyin?

Hello, I will attempt to draw all current active players characters together. If you have any specific request for your character appearance that isn't on your character sheet, feel free to tell me! You can dm me or ping me on the discord server.

It will take a while for me actually start drawing so take your time

Oh. Cool.

Just do whatever with my description. I don't have any preference.

Wuyin shrugs her shoulders.

"I did it chronologically! It's not my fault there are multiple sword-based disciples!"
"Sword-based disciples are a plenty huh? Wonder who they are..."

"..sister, are you really asking that question? Though an exchange of pointers of Insights will be nice.."

"..dear younger sister of mine, why are you having a look that is looking forward to that?"
