Deep Red (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

I do hope that the deal with Azula will be more than just waifuing her though. Akane's looking to be the most solid and decent member of the family, it being solely based on romance would kind of cheapen that.

IC, Akane herself is still in denial about being lesbian. She also doesn't attract to azula like how she is to mitsuko yet. She does genuinely love and trust azula as a family though while waifuing is mostly us voters pushing it. Still, Azula have imply to want akane to be her concubine if azula end up as the firelord and she might be a little yandere for akane.

Also we are closest thing Azula has to mother so some of voters want to keep their relationship that way

Also remeber that we are on SV which is rather strict about NSFW stuff, especially with <18 years old involved

Read the whole thing in one sitting. This is the BEST Avatar quest/fic I can remember reading. Akane is a great character and I find the intricacies of the royal family are pretty fascinating as someone who loves some political intrigue in their stories.

Just "fade to black" on anything not SV appropriate. Wouldn't that work?

They're sisters can we not

I did not get the concubine vibe out of that at all. That was a werid conversation. but my reading of it was just Azula being glad she'd find a flaw in her older sister, rather than her coming across as annoyingly perfect. Either that or azula suspects her feelings for her own friend are not purely platonic so it's a solidarity thing.

some think that she is happy that she has some sort of power over us that can make sure we can't ignore/betray her

rather fucked up mindset, but not that surprising

I'm not really planning on writing any explicit smut/NSFW scenes for this story, to be honest, even on the fiction.live page - that's one reason why I felt okay to go ahead and crosspost here. And I'm definitely not doing anything like that with any characters less than 18 years old.

Unfortunately for you, this quest is hosted on fiction.live which has almost no rules about NSFW stuff. Soo... ya know while wanting to keep it out of SV is okay, don't jump on others that want it

Honestly, even with the.....questionable nature of Fiction.live, I don't see any forseeable chance of anything happening with Akane save sister/family-feelings fighting with rivalry-feelings.

yeah, azula is not in a great headspace. Though the way she was freaking out over a threat to her sister has me thinking that she's not as bad as in cannon. I suspect having someone who isn't the worst parts of her personality writ large treat her with respect and affection has helped.

hm, maybe that's part of why she's so focused on the Akane? a mixture of respect, and the contradiction of someone who makes extensive use of soft power still being undeniably strong. Given the poles of azulas world are likely her strong beloved father and her weak despised mother her sister mixing traits of both likely seems wrong to her in some fundamental way. On top of that Akane likely being one of the few of people in her life who's actually nice to her means Akane has to be someone she focuses on.

Azula is definitely not as bad as in canon. She expresses concern, she hugs her sister, she has displays of affection. She is changed, and not quite the girl she was in the memories of Zuko Alone. A little bit softer, maybe, perhaps allowed to be a bit more of a child by the space created by her older sister. She is still recognizably Azula, with all that entails, but she is not canon Azula.

Just popping in to show my support. Kosm you do some amazing work and its always a pleasure to read it. You've created and breathed life into some amazing characters in this and the other quest, and some of the moments have been really moving. Keep up the good work!

Thanks CharlBaal and Leonidas and Stormwhite, I'm glad if you all like it! <3

The relationship with Azula is one of my favorite parts of writing this, to be honest. She was always pretty much my favorite character watching the show as a kid, so it's a lot of fun exploring her from a different angle through the point-of-view of a big sister.

I'm planning on running the quest this Thursday, so I'll try and post the next update here on Friday. ^_^

Why is it always lesbians?

Why can't there be a good bi protagonist sometimes?
There are some bi protagonists around, if you look for them, but there are pretty intuitive market reasons for them to be less common than either straight or gay protagonists. While there are lots of individual exceptions, there's a general trend that people prefer to read romances containing characters who (a) are the same gender as the reader and (b) aren't attracted to people the reader finds unattractive. Thus the high prevalence of straight romance novels; focusing on straight people ensures that (a) is met for all their binary-gendered readers, and that (b) is met for all their straight readers, and thus that the novels have maximally-broad market appeal. And, given (b), bi protagonists are pretty inherently going to have less mass appeal than either straight or gay protagonists; because straight protagonists can fulfill (b) for straight people and also for bi/pan/etc. people, and gay protagonists can fulfill (b) both for gay people and for bi/pan/etc. people, but bi protagonists will only fulfill it for bi/pan/etc. people, not for either exclusively-straight or exclusively-gay people.

There's a counterforce in that, beyond (b), people seem to additionally like reading about characters who are attracted to people who they do find attractive; so there's a market niche to be found in writing bi protagonists in order to appeal to bi/pan/etc. people who prefer them over straight or gay protagonists. But that's then aimed at a relatively small audience compared to either straight or gay protagonists, and so it's to be expected that running into those stories is going to be less common.

Of course, there are lots of authors who aren't writing for mass appeal, and are instead just writing things that they personally like. That's especially true on sites like this one where there's not much of a revenue stream. But you're still going to get fewer authors who like bi protagonists than who like either straight or gay protagonists, so the outcome will be similar even if the path is a bit different.

Summary: You are Akane, older sister of Zuko and Azula, and Crown Princess of the Fire Nation. And you think, someday, your father is going to kill you.

I confirm what others have been saying: this is one of the best stories I have ever read. It's hard to even describe why; you're so far beyond the typical problems fanfics have, that I'm left on unfamiliar ground.

Your overall writing is impeccable. The personality of each character is clear, rich, and believable. Characters actually grow from their experiences, rather than being static functions that convert situations into responses. You've managed to give readers a voice without them derailing the story, and without Akane sounding like the living embodiment of a UN committee. Finally, the storyline is intensely interesting... so please, write more! I eagerly await the next chapter!

I love this so much! I especially love how Akane's questioning about her sexuality is so realistic. That internalized homophobia is so hard to get properly.

There's also a decent amount of hero worship/idolization considering what Akane did. Not even an hour after Azula warns her sister about the threat to her life the Firelord is dead, Akane is injured and the throne room is in flaming ruin. Akane might have just one-upped her father in Azula's eyes, regardless of what her sister says otherwise.

Not only that, but Akane is kind to her as well.

Just read it on fiction.live, had to struggle through the annoying interface before realizing it's been cross-posted.

It's quite good, characters sounds like how you expect them to. There is a hint of mystery regarding our father and what he thinks of us. I am expecting the central plot element or goal to hopefully be introduced soon. I. E. What drives the MC forward.
