Behind the Serpent Throne (CK2)

I feel that personal combat is important because incoming war (yes we're a leader. Doesn't mean we won't have to fight) but also even here we're getting into fights, and winning them is good.

Also accidents happen. Or 'accidents'. You know.

Shonen friendship probably means more options, and I'm drowning in those already.

Man, that was exhilarating. If all fights are going to be like this...
[] The 'Gang of Roughs'
Need: 40, Rolled: 1d100+10 (Special win, counts towards getting a crit)+15 (martial bonus applies)=112, 'base' roll of 97, crit it is! 112+1d100=209...another crit. 209+1d100=307...another crit.

307+1d100=395, fucking finally.

Literally what the fuck?!?!
*ahum*
So sorry, it's just, my tights....

[] Reroll the Academy Bureaucracy option (it was a failure, if you're wondering.)
Better pick this then. If we were to fail this one again, would you take the 2nd roll or the best of both rolls?
[] One of the soldiers spreads the tale around, and his victory reaches many ears, adding to Kiralo's reputation.
Greater reputation is good and would increase the chance of success on some actions and unlock new ones.
[] Having pushed himself to his limits, Kiralo has found strength on the other side. +1 to Personal Combat.
Better PC is good, especially now, but I'm not sure if it's worth giving up another reward on this list.
[] Kiralo has made not merely a servant, but a friend through this battle. Or perhaps just someone who likes to tag along, because now Ji'lae's trying to talk to him.
Could be useful.
[] The rumors of a job have drawn more and more skilled Mages than expected. Coming out of their holes in something of a swarm.
This is why we did the action in the first place, so....

[] Hi'sen: A northerner who is said to have a real talent for calling upon spirits to heal injuries. There were rumors, apparently, that he was going to be placed on the staff of, say, a Governor if he successfully completed his challenging duel-lessons as doctor and Mage, but shockingly he has declared that he would rather make his name by working with the army. In his early 20s.
Healers are very important during wars, I'm definitely going to pick this one.
[] Hano: A bastard from Hari-Bueli, he has risen this far on fire and spirit, yes, but also a real skill with, apparently, defensive magic and a dedication to Csirit equal to the person he was named after, Hanae. Despite suspicions of his Bueli blood, he's proven himself loyal.
Defensive magic does have its uses.
[] Qinlun: A young prodigy, he is only fourteen and yet many apparently rave about his flawless brush-strokes and cunning understanding of spirits. He lacks experience, and is in fact the son of a noble and a respected concubine, raised on dreams and with long fingers, and yet he apparently looks up to Ji'lae and has managed to convince the Academy to give him a pass to stop his education for a time to serve as a junior magical aide to the army, if Kiralo will have him.
I dunno. The people of Csirit and Kiralo are no doubt fine with child soldiers, but that doesn't mean I have to be. He is a prodigy though and could give us a connection to his noble father.
[] Deshi: Almost Kiralo's age, he is the son of a solider, and physically skilled, and startlingly tall, which has no doubt led to rumors about his blood. Either way, he is known for the speed of his bindings, and his skill at unleashing spirits in scrolls with a quick, supple will that means that in a direct fight using spirits, none can beat him, and if it gets close, he's apparently almost as good at Ji'lae in a fight.
Boring (not that magic is boring, but compared to the specialties of some of the others listed) but practical. Useful for just beating people into submission, which is a good enough strategy.
[] Gen'he: A strange one, he's in his early twenties and while he does know some combat abilities, his main skill is in long-term spirit-work, such as binding spirits to protect an army while it is sleeping, or using spirits to enhance the strength and fortitude of a castle.
Hmm, on second thought, this one seems more like a 'boring but practical' guy. Very useful.
[] Bao'ren: The son of a merchant, Bao'ren was in fact a 'Street Spirit-catcher' as they are called until he was thirteen, and he still specializes in finding spirits even in the wilderness. And along those same lines, he knows what sorts of spirits can be found where, leading to this city-boy having a skillset that might well be perfect for the army on the march.
Ah, a scout? Would be good to have.
[] Ji'lae has heard of a distant fugitive of sorts, who, despite their young age, has done much. He's said to be skilled in the Sage styles of the Southlands, and in fact he is said to perhaps be one of them. Ji'lae has been somewhat mum on this person. Except to endorse them as skilled.
Probably one of, if not the most skilled of this group, but do we want to be associated with a criminal? That's the question.
[] Jaw-lung: Named for the ancient invasion of Sea-Raiders that his distant ancestor was said to have seen off, he grew interested in the Sea-Raiders magical arts, as well as those of the Anlan, and he has a strange obsession with cannons. Guns. Things that make explosions. On a battlefield, he's the first to go for the big, flashy spirit. Off the battlefield, he's more likely to improve equipment and work on customized weaponry and armament combinations for soldiers.
So knowledge of foreign magic and better equipment? This is a good one.

@The Laurent I have a hard time deciding on what rewards to pick. Well done.

For major stuff, I want these three. Reroll the fail, reputation is influence (well, sort of? It helps?) is actions, and personal improvements.
My feeling is that we need to focus less on Kiralo's personal ability and more on actually defeating the Prince. I'd go 'swarm of recruits', 'friends with Ji'lae', and 'academy reroll'. Ji'lae was influential enough to make an enormous political difference here and he's only going to grow more important- as Kiralo said, given some experience he's going to surpass Kiralo in badassery. As for the 'swarm' - quantity matters.

[X] Reroll the Academy Bureaucracy option (it was a failure, if you're wondering.
[X] Kiralo has made not merely a servant, but a friend through this battle. Or perhaps just someone who likes to tag along, because now Ji'lae's trying to talk to him.
[X] The rumors of a job have drawn more and more skilled Mages than expected. Coming out of their holes in something of a swarm.

For moderate gains I'd for these five:
[X] Hi'sen: A northerner who is said to have a real talent for calling upon spirits to heal injuries. There were rumors, apparently, that he was going to be placed on the staff of, say, a Governor if he successfully completed his challenging duel-lessons as doctor and Mage, but shockingly he has declared that he would rather make his name by working with the army. Healer, direct magus-to-magus combatant, utility guy, scout and resource management, and exotic skills.

I can see the importance of Personal Combat, but I'm not exactly convinced that 1 point is going to make a big difference.

As for friendship.... *shrug*

1+ (from 18 to 19) to Personal Combat just pales in comparison to other choices here. Besides, with the rolls here, having Kiralo in personal combat in the upcoming battlefield means that we probably fucked up.

More Skilled Mages vs Everything else is a case of "Short-Term" vs "Long-Term" as I see it, and I chose Long-Term.

I knew whenever dice were killing a QM, it'd be good for us players!

I don't feel personal combat is really that important. I would prefer to take shounen friendship option honestly.
Same here. Kiralo's first and foremost a tactician or strategist, the cavalry officer and a Captain of Rassit, not a front-line fighter, though we aren't too shabby at it either. But we have Kueli (and all our subordinate's who are paid to fight for us) to beat people up, I feel Personal Combat's not something we'd get as much utility as we could.

These four are my picks, though I it is between our reputation and a new ally in Ji'lae. Reputation might translate into Influence were we to leverage it properly, but an ally, especially an up-and-coming mage such as Ji'lae would open doors for us, especially in regards to the Academy. The only question for Ji'lae is if more obligations is worth another ally, and if the voters won't neglect him.

Alternatively, we could suck up the failure, and go for the longer term options. It would leave a bitter taste in my mouth, and no doubt many here, but it could be the wiser move.

These four mages I would like to see. Perhaps it's just me, but I see them in a support role and, of course, as force multipliers. Hi'sen and Hano especially have great synergy. One focuses on Healing and the other on Defense. We'd be able to keep more soldiers alive through them. More veterans to survive this campaign, the solid core of Csirit's army rather than have to recruit green-faced conscripts as good volunteers die.

[X] Gen'he: A strange one, he's in his early twenties and while he does know some combat abilities, his main skill is in long-term spirit-work, such as binding spirits to protect an army while it is sleeping, or using spirits to enhance the strength and fortitude of a castle.

These two I could pick either one. Gen'he for further synergy with Hi'sen and Hano. Ji'lae for the mystery box option, though I'd like to know more about the Sage styles. There are skilled Sages like there are skilled Mages, but this one is singled out among them. Surely it isn't just because he is a skilled Sage?

@The Laurent, can we have an overview of the Sage styles, and how they differ from Csirit system? As far as Kiralo knows, what are the advantages of bringing a foreign style into a Csiritian civil war?

Well, Sages are for one religious and philosophical figures. They use a fluid style of commanding and worshipping spirits that seems in some ways a combination of Csiritan Priestly styles and the erudition of the Mages. They are figures of great import, and in the Southland some even have large cults devoted to their beliefs and interpretations. They tend to be good at the magical tattoo thing, but their main specialty is directly using spirits, and thus Sages are stereotyped as 'Hedge magic' of sorts by Mages, who tend to prefer the beauty of calligraphy scrolls containing the spirit to be controlled.

But even they can't deny the power of spirits floating around the magic-user as he walks barefoot, a power unto himself.

Often, along with this (though this is actually present in a lot of systems) Sages also tend to have special gestures or movements that are meant to 'teach' Spirits what to do without needing words.

Sages are also skilled at weaving together the names of many spirits in a chant.

There are other differences, though the main one people would note is the difference of role. Southlanders worship great spirits, and therefore a Sage is a religious figure to some extent. To *some* extent, obviously, because plenty don't have the talent, charisma, and inclination to have a cult.

If you'd picked the Sage Background, you would have been one of the ones with your own cult/followers/etc.

Say, we are getting dozens of mages as a minor reward, right? So how many mages make a "swarm" that is considered a big reward?

Rerolling the failure is great of course, but I think for now we want immediate allies more than the rep boost. War is getting closer and closer after all.
Personal Combat would be great, but also more of a desperation resort. War is a young man's sport and Kiralo is better suited to command than the front now.

Healer, genius, Sage, enchanter and street shaman.
Good balance for our needs. Especially Bao'ren and the Sage, considering we're facing foreign mercenaries and preferably engage in the fields. Someone who knows how to deal with strange spirits would be a great boon.

Though I was sorta joking. He's twenty-five. In theory Kiralo has another...decade or so before he starts to go downhill, and he's in great shape for someone his age. Strangely untouched, really. Like, in terms of horrible injuries and accidents.

That said, yeah, Ji'lae has surpassed him and is going to get better...but PC 18 is actually really high.

[X] Reroll the Academy Bureaucracy option (it was a failure, if you're wondering.)

A no-brainer.

[X] One of the soldiers spreads the tale around, and his victory reaches many ears, adding to Kiralo's reputation.

I actually feel this to be more useful than making a friend. A greater reputation means more Influence and more doors opened for us.

[] Having pushed himself to his limits, Kiralo has found strength on the other side. +1 to Personal Combat.

I don't know. +1 Personal Combat is unlikely to make a difference.

[] Kiralo has made not merely a servant, but a friend through this battle. Or perhaps just someone who likes to tag along, because now Ji'lae's trying to talk to him.

I can see the use in this but....

[X] The rumors of a job have drawn more and more skilled Mages than expected. Coming out of their holes in something of a swarm.

That was basically the point of the action, so I see this as amplifying its effect.

In his early 20s.

Healer, a must.

Good, but compared to the rest, I'm not convinced.

Ugh, I'm totally not comfortable with child soldiers. This is just my personal morals preventing me from picking a good option, so don't let that stop you.

I decided to go more with support people, but he could always be useful.

[X] Gen'he: A strange one, he's in his early twenties and while he does know some combat abilities, his main skill is in long-term spirit-work, such as binding spirits to protect an army while it is sleeping, or using spirits to enhance the strength and fortitude of a castle.

Utility guy.

[X] Bao'ren: The son of a merchant, Bao'ren was in fact a 'Street Spirit-catcher' as they are called until he was thirteen, and he still specializes in finding spirits even in the wilderness. And along those same lines, he knows what sorts of spirits can be found where, leading to this city-boy having a skillset that might well be perfect for the army on the march.

Scout, has knowledge of 'spirit geography', can potentially catch new spirits.

[X] Ji'lae has heard of a distant fugitive of sorts, who, despite their young age, has done much. He's said to be skilled in the Sage styles of the Southlands, and in fact he is said to perhaps be one of them. Ji'lae has been somewhat mum on this person. Except to endorse them as skilled.

Open the Mystery Box!

[X] Jaw-lung: Named for the ancient invasion of Sea-Raiders that his distant ancestor was said to have seen off, he grew interested in the Sea-Raiders magical arts, as well as those of the Anlan, and he has a strange obsession with cannons. Guns. Things that make explosions. On a battlefield, he's the first to go for the big, flashy spirit. Off the battlefield, he's more likely to improve equipment and work on customized weaponry and armament combinations for soldiers.

Better equipment and knowledge of foreign magic.

[X] Veekie

This pretty much was going to be my vote. Reputation is long term benefit, but we potentially have a war in as little as two turns so it's both hard to capitalize on in that short period of time and if we win the warthe reputation impact of that would by far supersede it. Thus rerolling the failure is an influence equivalant action (and gets the benefits this turn), acquiring even more mages is also an influence equivilant action given Gang of Roughs was repeatable, and as we've already seen having the friendship can be great when that individual is an up and comer.

For the medium rewards, like Veekie I greatly prefer the more utility ones as the vast majority of a war is simply movement and logistics which they'd help with. The Sage is also interesting enough to be a unique commodity, and the young person is a genius who needs experience who has a noble father which could also be helpful.

PC is not that important for the big rewards. Sure, it will be hard to raise afterwards since we are at our prime but we should not be fighting at court and in the field we fight as Rassit and we have +4 PC when mounted.

[] Reroll the Academy Bureaucracy option (it was a failure, if you're wondering.)

Saves us choosing it again if succesful, which saves us one dice.

[x] One of the soldiers spreads the tale around, and his victory reaches many ears, adding to Kiralo's reputation.

It either will make martial options easier (which is valuable close to the war) or it will give us more influence (which would be invaluable)

[x] The rumors of a job have drawn more and more skilled Mages than expected. Coming out of their holes in something of a swarm.

Very tempting since it is what we wanted from this action but I am waitimg for Word om how good it is.

[x] Kiralo has made not merely a servant, but a friend through this battle. Or perhaps just someone who likes to tag along, because now Ji'lae's trying to talk to him.

Getting loyal people who is good at things we aren't would make things easier. I mean, usually I am the first to say we should focus on the war but we have to start getting our people in important positions and we need to have people for that. We are getting Kueli for intrigue and I think we are trying to get Yanmae for stewardship. Magic and learning are our worst stats and this guy might cover one of them.

A healer is vital to any party and he would be useful later if we keep him on staff but I am not sure how much of a difference he would make. Still, tempted if only to keep hero units alive.

Loyal protector. Both are rare but doesn't really catch my interest.

[x] Qinlun: A young prodigy, he is only fourteen and yet many apparently rave about his flawless brush-strokes and cunning understanding of spirits.

Talented, politically connected and looks up to our new friend. If he lives, he will be useful later on and having a good understanding of spirits might let him give us a bit more of an idea about things.

Without knowing how one person's skill influence big battles this option loses a bit of luster.

[x] Gen'he: A strange one, he's in his early twenties and while he does know some combat abilities, his main skill is in long-term spirit-work, such as binding spirits to protect an army while it is sleeping, or using spirits to enhance the strength and fortitude of a castle.

I like the idea of not getting murdered while we sleep.

Perfect for an army on the march? Say no more.

Weird magic shit people can't expect.

Besides the fact that he makes equipment (which is what interests me since I am not particularly impressed about what it says of his combat skills) some of this sound familiar.
Juae shook his head and took a slow sip of his tea, peering at Kiralo over the rim of the cup. "He showed me what they call the Turtle. A new weapon of war. I believe the Anlan might have factions, or perhaps they squabble among each other as people are wont to do, because they spoke of their efficacy in at least being able to cause difficulty to the Hulks."

"The turtle?"

Juae pulled out a scroll and opened it. Drawn there in dark ink on the white space was a large, rounded shell of sorts. It was slightly block at places, and there were cannons ringing it, coming out from viewports that looked as if they could be closed at a moment's notice. The shell seemed as if it must be thick, and by a soldier standing next to it for comparison, it was almost as tall as two men standing on each other's shoulders, with large wheels, though it was low enough to the ground that there was likely no crawling under it easily.

Its front had what looked like a ramhead, and a large cannon of the type usually used only by ships.

"It's...a cannon platform?"

"A mobile one," Juae said, "And its armor is tough. There are notes in the spirits and how they are arrayed, though the method is one that they would not share, but that we could learn."

"What do these involve?" Kiralo asked, frowning as the man unrolled the scroll a little more for a few notes.

"A rather cunning technique, I believe, involving binding spirits to the metal in a way that seems as if it was…" Juae shrugged and said, "It unnerved me, it was as if I could hear their groans, and yet I couldn't see the spirits at all. However, superstition aside, they should be powerful enough to stand up to the blows of Tarnarin and Hanin quite well."

"Are you so sure of that?" Kiralo asked, "Their loosed arrows and bolts can pack quite a punch, and they'll be aiming for any weak spots."

"My guess is that enough Hanin, massed, could cause a problem, but the Turtle moves as fast as a man walking quite quickly, and if we found a way to increase their speed...the point would be to hit the enemy lines when they're weak and then power through them. At that point, from how it was described to me, the ram tears people down and the cannons shatter the formation," Juae said. "I saw it in action, if only against stationary targets, and it seems very impressive."

"Ah, and you're interested in...purchasing them?"

"It is not something that can be openly said, is it?" Juae shook his head, "But they would be a potent weapon, and one that could not easily be counted, especially by the Bueli themselves."

Kiralo considered the words, "The terrain hardly would bear wheeled vehicles. I know from accounts of old campaigns," that he had tirelessly been reading as part of his general education on Csiritan military affairs, "That there were often difficulty maintaining a baggage train, even without the constant raids. They'd slow down a campaign considerably to haul around."

Juae frowned and nodded, "Perhaps, but there are advantages, and more than that, there are many sorts of ground where they would be unstoppable. I am convinced that it might be the way forward, a weapon that enemies cannot easily match. The prices they have mentioned are expensive, yes. But that only makes it better: what other power in the region could afford it, and what they call expensive, and what might be for an ordinary noble outrageous...is quite within the grasp of the Imperial Seat. It means that we would have a weapon that could not easily be acquired and used against us by petty nobles. Only Governors or Emperors would be able to readily afford them."

Kiralo nodded. Control was always a point of difficulty with any form of power or force. A half-naked man in a tent might have a greater mastery of the lore of spirits than his armed opponent. Peasants were at a vast disadvantage in revolting because the spirits associated with war had names, and those names were known by some but not others. But petty nobles? Popular revolt leaders? Former soldiers? There were many ways to even the ground, and the more even the ground, the less power the Emperor could wield. Or those who might wield the Emperor could wield.

Sometimes for the better, one might say, since greater control could be balanced against far greater taxation. Either way, Kiralo understood that there was more at work here than one bit of new technology. It seemed promising on paper, but so did many ideas, and so Kiralo asked, "And you want my help?"

"Maybe. I want to at least see what they're willing to offer, but to do so, we need to be able to talk, officially. I was hoping perhaps to find a way to purchase some before war comes…"

[X] Reroll the Academy Bureaucracy option (it was a failure, if you're wondering.)
In his early 20s.
[X] Qinlun: A young prodigy, he is only fourteen and yet many apparently rave about his flawless brush-strokes and cunning understanding of spirits.

I think rerolling Academy Bureaucracy is probably underwhelming, failure can have some negative consequences but baseline it's just one die, as Bakkasama mentioned... There exists some sort of bias towards valueing more highly what one already has, idr the name, and this one was supposed to be in the bag, so it might be easy to feel it's a sort of safer pick than it is.

[X] One of the soldiers spreads the tale around, and his victory reaches many ears, adding to Kiralo's reputation.

[X] Hano: A bastard from Hari-Bueli, he has risen this far on fire and spirit, yes, but also a real skill with, apparently, defensive magic and a dedication to Csirit equal to the person he was named after, Hanae. Despite suspicions of his Bueli blood, he's proven himself loyal.

@Bakkasama - damn, you're right with regards to the Turtle. That guy would be a wonderful bonus to have towards it, particularly if we acquired him now he would provide a bonus to that action we took which would also improve our relations with General Juae. He's also helps quite considerably with this:
Title: A Primer On Foreign Magic
Dice Rolled: Magic, Hung's Magic (20)
Chance of Success: 75%
Time: 2 Turns
Text: Kiralo might need to know about the nature of foreign magic. There is only so much that can be learned, but it would be helpful in evaluating the turtle, and any other possible threats, even if it isn't going to play into the war effort. But there is more to it than that, and there is some degree of risk in that studying foreign ways can sometimes be misconstrued as agreeing with them.
as given Prince Jinhai has fought the Sea-Raiders he may have picked up some of their tactics too, so this guy could also aid us there.

It would be wonderful if picking the major action more mages allows us to pick another person from the medium rewards list.

I love the idea of combining medieval tanks with cannon magic. BOOM.

Early modern, really! I mean, they have cannons and the printing press: that sorta makes them early modern, not medieval. Or at least, those are two of the technologies most associated with 'early modern' for most people.

Does the academy bureaucracy help with the war effort or is it something we must do now? Because if we want more mages there is an option for that and I don't know if more reputation could give us more influence but if that is the case then it would be better to choose that for an extra dice.

Major Gains (From the crits, Choose 3)

[X] Reroll the Academy Bureaucracy option (it was a failure, if you're wondering.)
[X] One of the soldiers spreads the tale around, and his victory reaches many ears, adding to Kiralo's reputation.
[] Having pushed himself to his limits, Kiralo has found strength on the other side. +1 to Personal Combat.

So far, failure is basically a negative die. There are consequences to trying and failing versus not trying at all(which is why a lot of the court gets nothing done)
