Ascensions and Transgressions: the Tales of Keris Dulmeadokht (Exalted game)

The Althing Infernal - Chapter 1
New Kerisgame story! Wherein Keris returns to Malfeas, you all get your first look at some of the people mentioned from previous arcs like Naan, the kids, Orange Blossom, etc, I buy some Malfeas crafting Charms and start work on the Shashalme's present, and Keris sadfaces about Rat some more!

Oh, and of course Haneyl has a squeeing fit over Ligier's domain. The only thing separating it from paradise for her is the lack of trees.

@Aleph This chapter of Kerisgame was really neat. I love Malfeas, such an interesting setting.

They want a sacrifice to Unquestionable Ligier to travel on the roads, though. Of course they do.

((The gate-guards are looking for a Resources 4 sacrifice as payment.))
Dang. The toll roads in Malfeas are steep. Even my state turnpike only runs you about 4 dollars both ways.

((Yeah, he was just mildly curious about the Infernal who flared at his guards.))
But wow is it ever a good thing she paid up instead of bullying them into letting her pass.

Haneyl's eyes go wide. "I... I have to make my forest more like that," she whines. "Keris! Keris! Um... Mama! You need to help me! We need to make lots of pretty things! And you need to make them too so he'll... he'll like them!"
2-dot Principle of schoolgirl crush on Ligier? I'm sure that will end well.

Say, Aleph, what kind of poker player is Keris? :p
Alarmingly good, actually. Like, alarmingly good to someone who only sees how she keeps getting herself in trouble. Not only does she have Subterfuge 5 Light-Fingered Larcenist 3 for cheating, and Presence 5 Mendaciloquent Maverick 3 for bluffing, she's also got acute enough hearing to generally tell when the other players are bluffing and may in fact be able to identify certain cards she's seen and heard before by hearing microscopic differences in the thickness and the way they bend when picked up.

In short, Keris will fucking clean you out unless you have Entropy 2 minimum and enough Enlightenment to overwhelm her native advantages through sheer force of Arete. And enough Prime warding to stop her hearing you do it, because she'll stab you if she does.

Yeah, but your state turnpike probably doesn't get you across dozens of layers of a Jupiter-sized Dyson Sphere within six hours or so.

Ligier Approves of Infernals whose reaction to his domain is to basically swoon over how pretty it is and hnngh at the level of artistry inherent in basically everything there.

Because the armour is High First Age ceromonial burial moonsilver plate, which was then vitriol-tainted which makes it even more organic looking.

And I render the High First Age as baaaaaasically being Orokin in aesthetics, given they both love gold, both are assholes, and both were murdered by their "loyal" supersoldiers at the prompting of a mysterious vizier figure who guide the supersoldiers to the present day.

Credit to @Shyft for the image!

And yes, it has been previously remarked on that Keris is baaaaaasically a Tenno anyway. With a few minor differences. For instance, Tenno have a more limited pool of MURDERPOWERS. Also shorter hair.

Kerisgame, part the thirty second! Keris, you are a Scourge. And you have Freedom Lets Go. Just use it and stop angsting already, you're denying the teachings of Adjoran.

I am actually a bit surprised that Keris still harbors feelings for Rat and her role in his death. I assumed based on the brief description of her final encounter with him that she had used Freedom Lets Go before she killed him. That seemed like the explanation for her willingness to kill him and Sasi's desire to create protections against treachery from Keris.

Why didn't Keris use the charm before killing him? If she didn't use it against Rat then when has she used it?

She did use it against him. At the point when she killed him, she both loved and hated her.

She used FLG to get rid of the hatred after... you know, the whole "stabbing to death and then inhaling of his corpse" bit.

Because Keris is a character, not a perfectly optimal machine. She used FLG to flense away the part of her confused feelings that hated Rat for leaving her after he was dead, but she killed him out of love, because he was trapped and suffering and enslaved to the Mask of Winters with no way to get free. And when she used it, she kept the part of the Principle that loved him, and missed him, and grieved his death.

Keris has "Be Loved" at 5 dots. She literally considers living a life where she's unloved and has nobody who cares for her to be as scary as the thought of dying. She may have Freedom Lets Go, but she clings tightly to her love for people. She won't use it so indiscriminately on them.

And I sort of think that makes her love for people mean more, in a way? She could have stopped loving Rat and left only the hatred to kill him and then flensed that away too. She could stop loving Sasi on a whim, at any second. She could do either of these, mechanically, and she knows that she could do these things in-character. And she doesn't. Even when they make her confused or upset, even when they hurt her or keep her awake for days with fear or guilt, she makes a conscious choice every time the prospect arises to not let them go. Because she considers the love worth the price it comes with.

(This is, incidentally, why Sasi is so wary of her. Keris wouldn't need to use FLG to hurt those she loves. It's an unpleasant part of herself that she doesn't like all that much, but she is perfectly capable of hurting and, yes, killing them to spare them greater pain. I don't think it's something Adorjani either; it's something she's always been capable of. She's probably going to bud a soul that expresses that, at some point. It won't be a pleasant experience.)
I'm amused that Keris managed to pick up two full styles and two malfean charms, but still no summoning.
She's getting round to it!

Also it's only technically been a week and a bit of downtime, which she largely spent crafting. She still has a bunch of xp to spend after Calibration and the Althing are over.
I'd argue that Keris is following the teachings of Adorjan very well. She's completely insane, after all.
Really? How?

Like, seriously. How? "Insanity" is defined as being "a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behaviour, or social interaction; seriously mentally ill". Keris certainly isn't the latter, and I'd argue that she isn't the former either. Oh, some of her high-level Principles like Be Loved and Get Revenge seriously skew her situational behaviour, but even then they do it in understandable ways, and when she's not exposed to them she's perfectly capable of blending in, behaving in line with the crowd and interacting socially without raising undue suspicion. Her actions are generally rational - impulsive and poorly thought out as far as consequences go, yes, but rational in their motivations.

Given her paranoia and trust issues, Sasi probably skews as far away from "normal" as Keris does. Any definition of insanity that includes Keris would probably have to include her as well.

*wishes more people would play characters like this*

Same reason as my planned Abyssal character uses an Orichalcum Dire Lance, despite it being completely suboptimal for her to do so in any edition you care to name- because she's a person, and she has personal reasons to do so.

I was speaking about Adorjan. Adorjan is insane, so Keris is following her teachings when she holds on to painful connections despite the chance to be better-off if she FLG'd them.

Ah, right. Heh. Amusingly, while she's in no way following Adorjan's teachings, she very much is following her example. Adorjan still loves her daughters, after all.

The Althing Infernal - Chapter 2
Chapter 2 of The Althing Infernal! In which Keris is rendered speechless! Also, we see the Althing, and I twice get awful, awful luck from the dice fairies at times when I wanted coolness. So unfair!

Also, brace yourselves, because for what may be the first time ever on-screen, all three of Keris's Pantheon souls are onscreen and getting along at the same time! Possibly due to, hehe. Echo's little "surprise". :D

Edit: Also, two new demons, whee! Rathan's selloue from Session 31, which I have only just now written up because I am terrible, and Echo's new dress-making pets!
Progeny of the Martyred Moon
The ugliest face of a sellou is the one most-welcomed by those that know them, for an arbiter is at its most beautiful when it is acting with pitiless cruelty. When they show kindness, their features shift into repulsive masks, though none could say what exactly changes in the lines or colouration of their faces. They are humanoid above the waist, though something in the set of their nose and jaw brings to mind the beak of an octopus. Half a dozen long tentacles spread out below them, with which they effortlessly skim through the waves or support themselves on land. Their hair is akin to the stingers of jellyfish and their hands are six-fingered, with wickedly pointed nails of bone.

Selloue serve as lash and balm alike to those that live in their care. They are driven by their law of the eye and tooth - that wrong is repaid with equal wrong, and dutifulness with duty - to claim a district as their own, and the sapients that live in it - be they human, demon or otherwise - as their charges. When such charges heed the law and honour their master, the arbiters will provide for those in need and work to defend them from threats both natural and intentional. When their laws are broken, they show no mercy in turning poetic justice on the criminals; suiting punishment to crime with dreadful pleasure.

While they walk on land without fear, selloue are most at home in the water. A curious quirk of their psychology leads them to view the creatures of the ocean in parallel to the people they guard, and they apply their laws to the fish and other animals in simpler form; herding shoals for the benefit of both realms, ruthlessly preventing actions that would unbalance the ecosystem and driving external predators away. Should a shark feast on a fisherman without need, it will wash up on shore the next morning - but the fisherman who overfills his net will be found equally guilty in turn.

Selloue do not share territories lightly, but it is not an uncommon occurrence. If two arbiters should lay claim to the same group or area, they will travel deep below the waves as the full moon rises, to a place of utmost privacy. Hours later, they will emerge as it sets; one beautiful, one hideous, and cooperate from then onwards. Selloue gain a point of Limit whenever they are prevented from providing for their charges or punishing a criminal. A lawless group left stranded in need on an island far from land may meet an arbiter of the eye and tooth as it emerges from the waves to bring them food, law and order.
Progeny of the Joyful Wind
Six and six are the limbs of the kordroma; scorpion-spinners of star-studded silk. Six legs support them; dog-sized insects with an inky black exoskeleton awash with faint white specks, and three sets of limbs clack and clatter as they weave - the tridents they are named after. With the first set - blocky club-limbs beset with a dozen different spinnerets - they produce the raw thread of their works. The second set are long and pointed needles tipped with tiny hooks that blur into motion as they weave silk into shape. Finally, they use the third set - sharp, smooth scissor claws - to cut their works free as they are finished. A weaving kordroma is a sight to behold; six flashing limbs and a darting tail whose stinger punches gleaming scale-studs and jewelled beads through the cloth to give texture and ornamentation to the ribbons and garments they produce.

Kordroma must weave. The club-limbs of a trident weaver are covered in spinnerets, and the thread-making organs within them are constantly active. If the thread is not used, the clubs will begin to ache from the pressure of the raw fabric building up within them. Prolonged inactivity will lead to the spinnerets becoming inflamed, and eventually the hard carapace will crack open, leaving the weaver with broken clubs that formless thread spills from without surcease.

The most prized and valued of works in kordroma culture is cloth-of-starlight, a shimmering midnight silken fabric only ever woven into ribbons or veils, with properties that are feverishly speculated upon in rumour and hearsay. Rare in the extreme is the trident weaver who can spin this substance - and then only under unbroken starlight - but they are exalted among their brethren, and the longing for such status can call a kordroma out onto Creation's soil when starlight seems caught in the blackest of cloth under an open sky. Trident weavers gain a point of Limit every day they are prevented from spinning thread.

Aleph, I'm tempted to make an appeal to the Endless Desert. That level of cuteness should be illegal.

On the other hand, Keris is probably going to look back on this later and wonder when her souls stopped being so adorable.
