The fungus makes a solo run possible, especially if we could build two farms. But it would be a long harsh struggle. So I think we should at least try to join a new colony. It's not like we can't just leave if it's too onerous.
 
Just to clarify if we build the farm in our shelter and than expand our shelter to get more space will there be a problem? Or do we have to expand the shelter first to not waste effort?

I worry about engaging the earthworm when we're suffering from the effects of hunger, but on the other hand, it feels like we could stay on the treadmill of trying to acquire a food surplus for a while if we put off fighting it.

No, you can build the farm first. You currently have 15 inventory space, so building a farm is no problem.
 
This Earthworm might have been the peak of whatever lightless realm it came from, but here on the surface it is nothing more than a toad in a well. Its death shall ensure that our newly founded sect shall last a thousand days.

I think that for this idea to work we might need to ask @Tam Lin if we could roll for a whole week or something to make it not take forever... but I am coming around to the idea of a new colony where instead of us joining one, we wait for local ants (maybe other outcasts from failed colonies, I'm aware this is not really plausible in terms of IRL entomology) to form a colony around us as their overlord.
 
Once we get a stockpile of food from the earthworm, food gathering + fungus farm should on average let us sneak in some cultivation without starving. Once we reach the next realm we have a wide variety of options open up to us due to being able to get more than 1 food per turn on average.
 
I mean what's the point of being an ant if you're just going to go solo. Might as well do a beetle quest or something.

It's not that it's impossible to do a solo run. But we'll basically be running with constant hunger penalties and need to do a forage run at least every other turn. Which means everything is effectively going to take more than twice as long. It'll get a bit better if we get a fungus farm. And then much better when we finally breakthrough and get another dice, but that's something like 8 or more turns away minimum.
