Well, we basically have to find more food now, or we could straight-up die if we try to find another colony in this state and don't succeed. The good thing is even at a -5, we have a 75% of success.

[X] Attempt to salvage food from the ruined colony. (9/10)

Longer term, finding a colony might be our only option here; outside of some kind of very good result from a random event, this does not really feel sustainable.

You have a 100% rate of success. Even with penalties, the lowest you can roll is a 1. I don't like giving 0 progress on any action

Yeah we're locked into the next two actions. We have to find food this turn.

[X] Attempt to salvage food from the ruined colony. (9/10)

And no matter what we're going to need to cultivate next turn.

This is definitely not sustainable.

On retrospect I now see Anthill Tai, and know that the path to resist heaven stomping tribute is with many antennae raised together in defiance.

are we hoping that high 1st realm of Qi Gathering will reduce food upkeep?

Looking at it, if we went for a 2:1 split where we spent one day out of every three cultivating and the rest on gathering food, we could probably get to the next stage. We might be suffering hunger penalties some of the time, but the fact that our hunger resets any time we eat is very helpful here. Obviously bad events could snowball here and kill us, but equally there's the same chance of good events.

The only issue is that if it requires ~90 progress to get out of Qi Gathering and into the next realm, th we'd take like, essentially an entire month to do it this way. That would feel like a real slog if each day is a single update. Then again, I'm not sure if we'll be able to spend every day cultivating if we find a colony either, so unless we start doing larger time increments, I think this may be an issue either way.

One thing I might suggest is making the individual realms give some sort of incremental bonus, so there's more of a direct satisfaction in making Number Go Up.

That, or we gain more/better dice, which means we can gather more food in a single action.

You will, when you go up from 1st Realm to 2nd Realm.

You still have Late and Peak to go.

Each realm goes from Initial > Early > Mid >Late >Peak.

You guys skipped Initial due to the whole colony murder thing.

One thing I might suggest is that rather than being big nonlinear jumps between realms, we make this a bit more gradual, maybe "building" our extra dice incrementally as we advance in each Realm.

For example, if advancing to the next Realm gets us another +d20, then each getting to each stage within the Realm could be something like:
Mid: +d4
Late: +d6
Peak: +d10

Or something along these lines.

An Earthworm arrives
Completely starving, but no longer exhausted, you resume your search for food.

You manage to luck into a chunk of fungus. But it's not just any fungus. It's the fungus your colony used to farm for food.

Your colony's farming techniques weren't the best and plenty of workers still had to forage for food. But now that you have it, you'll be able to propagate the fungus.

But first, you eat enough to satisfy your belly.

You make sure to save the precious spores so you can finally have renewable food.

You found 1 food, bringing your total to 1 food.
You have consumed 1 food, bringing your total to 0 food
You are no longer starving
You have unlocked the Fungus Farm structure. Once built, the Fungus Farm will produce 1 food every 5 turns. The Fungus Farm takes 10 Inventory space.

Exhausted after having a full belly, you can finally have some well deserved rest.

When the next day begins, you get the ominous feeling in your gut again. Something tells you you should start to churn the mysterious energy.

Thus, you start meditating and absorbing the mysterious energy from the air around you. As you gather it within your gut, you start to feel as if it has formed a new level of density.

Your pondering is caught short, however as you can feel a rumbling in the earth.

The rumbling is characteristic of an earth worm. You vaguely remember them being a nuisance and ruining ant tunnels. They eat ants also, but they are dumb and blind.

Like the snail, the earth worm is easy to avoid. However for as long as it's in the area, it has a small chance of destroying your shelter.

This isn't all bad, however. Since the earthworm is dumb and blind, you're pretty sure you can destroy it with your enhanced ant body. In fact, the earth worm can even be a boon. Once destroyed, it can provide you food that can last days... as long as you don't get eaten by it first.

Middle 1st Realm of Qi Gathering 21/30 > 39/30 > Late 1st Realm of Qi Gathering 9/40
Because you don't have any food, you are now Hungry and will experience -3 to all rolls. If you do not find food, you will be starving.
There is more than one predator in the area. There is a chance they will fight each other over territory. If a predator is destroyed by another predator, you won't get any reward for destroying that predator!
