...
@Tricia that's the first time a work of fiction has made me cry in a long time.

I do think it would be in character for Anderson to bring their father's axe back to the girls.

This would be one of those times that the old descriptor of "he died as he lived" wouldn't fit.
At least Gascoigne died in the arms of someone he could trust.

Honestly, while Abridged Anderson is a bit more... crude in vocabulary than his Manga and OVA counterpart, he still is mostly the same character.

And it is undeniable that Father Alexander Anderson was a Hero and a Man with great depth of character, morality and valour in both the Manga and OVAs. That he wished to become a Monster of God was just the extreme expression of his devotion to God, but in no way the end of his character.

Also undeniably, Anderson is a Priest of the Catholic Church. Commending to God the souls of a Man who fought the Dark for his fellow Man and a Woman who willingly went into danger to try to save the Man she loved is an act he would consider appropriate.

For though they were not Christians, they demonstrated with their acts the virtues of Christians. Gascoigne's last thoughts were not for himself, but for his wife and his daughters. Just the same, I'm sure that Viola's last thoughts were for her husband and her daughters. Through selfless devotion and love, they have earned their rest and their way into Heaven.

Resquietcat in Pace, Father Gascoigne and Viola.

Also, Tricia is an hell of an author.

You know what, when you think of it like that, the way that Gascoigne lived does sound like how Anderson lived as a part of the Iscariot Order; to live as a martyr unsung and not understood, to break all commandments to protect others' right to hold them up, and to die in vain to uphold an idea. Especially given Gascoigne's Canon death by the Paleblooded Hunter, it seems befitting.

Here's me hoping Gascoigne gets a good sending off from Anderson.

Uh, I can certainly deny that. Anderson was, as I've said before, a murderous psychopath, a 'hero' only in the sense of the ancient Greeks; he was great without being good, like Achilles, who abandoned his friends to die because another man took the slave-girl he wanted to rape. He was devoted to his church, fine. He liked children, fine, but even then his teachings to those children were despicable - remember "violence is only to be used against monsters or heretics"? Literally millions of people were, to Anderson, nothing but meat to be slaughtered.

Civilized society puts people like Anderson down like rabid dogs, or locks them away forever in prisons where their savagery can be contained. His existence - like the existence of Section XIII Iscariot in general - was at best a necessary evil in the horrible world of Hellsing, and on the day the last vampire died any sane Pope would have put that entire force, Anderson included, up against a wall, buried them deep, and forgotten they ever existed.

Or it puts them on TV and pays them massive piles of cash to talk about how so and so is causing the downfall of western civilization.

I'd also like to note that Anderson's beef with heretics goes only so far as the situation will allow. If given the choice between slaughtering a vampire or other monster and killing a protestant, Anderson will always pick the monster. He's crazy and hyperviolent, yes, but he's also fiercely loyal to Catholicism, and gets pissed off whenever a monster kills anyone who might be innocent. The guy's not blind to the value of human life, he's just got a mindset that comes from an era where you're either with the church or against it.

Remember, this is the same guy who goes out of his way to save Integra's life- even escorting her back to the mansion- and later leaves Enrico Maxwell to Alucard's familiars when he goes too far. He's even willing to respect Seras, a vampire, for her valor. That is not the behavior of a savage, mindless animal. He's a crazy zealot, and I'd rather not piss him off ever, but the guy's got morals and standards. He cares about human lives, and will protect them against the forces of darkness- even if they are heretics of some stripe.

Don't forget that Anderson stopped fighting Alucard in the museum because Seras walked a bunch of innocent bystander tourists into the room, Japanese tourists (hence rather unlikely to be practicing Catholics) in the manga.

There are oceans of blood on his hands, no denying that, but he isn't just a screaming madman who sees everyone outside of his religion as prey.

Anderson: "Ye mean, 'through the consideration of nevar havin' even heard the precious Gospel of Christ, who is the one and only way ta Salvation, and thus not havin' the informed choice of faith, yet still livin' accordin' ta Jesus's love despite their pagan upbringin', like true Children of Abraham', amen."
