[x] Talk to Oscar for a bit (write in)
-[x] Talk about your Wish and Oriko

You both sit around the bonfire for some time. You don't want to talk about yourself. You don't need to talk about it all. All that gushy 'talking about your feelings' stuff is stupid. Oriko only ever did it once in a moment of panic, and she's the greatest person ever.

That said, it is kind of boring sitting here in silence. Yeah, you're just bored. Might as well talk about something, right? Yeah…

"I…" Oscar raises his head from the fire as you start to speak. You pull your knees to your chest and hold them tightly. "I'm not very good with the whole…" You wave a hand for the right word. "people… thing."

You wait for Oscar to say something. Maybe a 'no kidding' type remark, or at least give a grunt of acknowledgement of how silly you sound. It doesn't come, though. He simply looks at you patiently, waiting for you to continue. No way out of it now, then.

You heave a sigh and rest your chin on your knees. "I did have a friend once – an actual, proper friend – but that ended… she left without a proper goodbye. Made me realise how fake all that stuff was. Friends, popularity, everything. It'd never last, so what's the point?" You chuckle wryly and watch the fire's embers flicker through the air. "I actually got pretty good at pretending."

You sniff and rub your nose idly, and you subconsciously smile. "And then I met Oriko. Like an angel appearing out of nowhere and vanishing just as suddenly."

"She left?" Oscar asks.

You nod. "Obviously. She was just passing by. Besides, there's no way a fancy rich girl would want to hang out with a bumbling washout like me. Heck, I technically have a criminal record, too."

Oscar looks directly at you, and you can imagine his brow raising. You quickly scramble to save your name.

"I-It was just a misunderstanding! Just…" You slump forward and tighten your grip on your knees. "No one believed me…"

And why would they? You were 'caught red-handed.' It's hard to refute being found with stolen stuff, even if you weren't the culprit. No one would believe a kid anyway.

You clear your throat and straighten again. "A-Anyway! I happened to meet a little white cat… thing called Kyubey not long after, and it offered me a wish."

"And that's how you became a 'magical girl,' right?" Oscar asks.

"Yep. I could ask for anything I wanted, in exchange for becoming a magical girl and hunting witches."

"What did you…" He trails off and shakes his head. "No, sorry. That's probably an awfully personal question."

"Huh? Nah, it's fine." You shrug. "I wished to become someone suitable for Oriko. To keep changing until I was someone she could associate with." You lean back and stare up at the damp tunnel ceiling. "I don't actually remember much after that, but things ended up working out in the end."

"You called her your master before. Did your wish make you a knight or some such?"

You snort. "Me, a knight? No, I just did a bit of hunting for her. Her power uses up a bunch of magic, and she had trouble controlling it at first. I got her all the grief seeds she could need, and in return she… she didn't leave me."

Oscar shifts to face you fully, and you feel his gaze on you. "I've never met this girl, but you've spoken about her a lot. In all the time you spent with her, did she ever give you the sense that she didn't want you around?"

"What? No, but-"

"How I see it, she wouldn't have led you on if she didn't want you to stay. The way you talk about her, she doesn't seem like the kind of person to lie to you."

"But that's just because I never messed up too badly." You reply, slumping again. "I screwed up a fight at one point though, and it almost ruined her. I woke up to her acting completely different to how she usually does, and I'd thought someone had replaced her. Maybe… maybe I wasn't worth keeping around after I caused her problems, and she left some copycat while she went off on her own."

"Wasn't she just worried about you?"

You screw up your face. "Yeah, obviously. But how do you think I felt waking up to that?" You kick a half-burnt bone further into the fire. "It was just… wrong. Oriko was always perfect. She always knew what to do. She always had a plan for everything." You snort and a thin smirk crosses your face. "Maybe she was a bit clumsy in the kitchen, but that just made everything else even more pronounced."

"It seems to me," Oscar says after a short pause, "that she cared about you the same way you care about her."

"Yeah, maybe…" You close your eyes and reach into your pocket. The shard of Oriko's soul gem brushes against your fingers and you pull it out. You sit forward and hold it out in front of you, watching the light from the fire sparkle through it.

"She still isn't here now, though. I… I messed up big time, and I couldn't protect her."

A tightness begins to well up in your chest again and you take a deep breath to stop yourself from shaking. You hope you've already cried yourself dry. You've made yourself look silly enough as it is. Breaking down again now would be humiliating.

Oscar stands. He grabs the refilled estus flask and hooks it to his belt, then places a hand on the hilt of his sword. He holds out his other hand to you.

"I know I've already promised to help you find her, but if she's out there, I swear to do everything I can to remain by your side until you're reunited."

You stare up at him. Why is he doing this? What makes you so special that he'd swear something like that? Much to your frustration, you feel tears welling up again. You wipe your eyes and push his hand away to hide your weakness. Pulling yourself to your feet, you shoot him your most confident smirk.

"Cut out all that mushy formal stuff. If you're good enough to go on like that, we might as well get moving."

You return the shard of Oriko to your pocket. Its warmth reaches you through your clothes, and you run your finger along the pocket idly.

Oscar is too good for this world.

Anyway, I went back and made sure before hand. Quelana definitely gave us her name, and Quelaag kinda gave us her's. I think a little interrogation is in order.

[X] Go talk to Quelana
-[X] The half spider half woman thing said we were trespassing in the domain of Quelaag. Does that name mean anything to you? Because they're kind of alike.
--[X] Show her the sword too, ask if there's anything about it we should know.

The actual idea here is to get Quelana to tell us what's going on and reveal we understand Quelaag. Not sure it'll get us exactly what we need, but I'm hoping something will come up that let's us skip this fight. Or a better idea of how to kill her. Both work.

Man, Oscar really is the best big brother that Kirika never had, just 100% uncompromising support for her and her goals.

There's the smallest little part of me that wants to try something like this, just coming in and pointing out "look, last time we took off your arm and stole your sword, next time probably won't go much better for you, now let us pass". Buuuuuut realistically Quelaag won't agree both because she's up her own eight legged ass with pride and superiority over filthy mortals like us, and because... well, her sister is right downstairs, like hell she's letting already proven violent individuals go anywhere near her.

[] Go talk to Quelana

So think I'd rather lean this, and luckily for me someone else doesn't have 3AM brain and actually thought of more details first!

After the beating the spider lady gave you, you decide you'd rather hold off on giving her another try. Even being disarmed (quite literally), you get the feeling she still has a few tricks up her sleeve. And so, you pick up your stolen sword and make your way across to Quelana instead.

"Back again so soon?" The witch muses as you round the pillar. "I genuinely expected you to be a pair of corpses by now."

You glance back at Oscar before reluctantly clearing your throat. "Well, we did have a bit of trouble… That spider lady was a real pain."

Quelana clicks her tongue. "That 'spider lady' has killed almost everyone who's entered its domain. You Undead seem ever-so-fond of throwing yourselves at foolish endeavours, I think."

"Hey, we got out, didn't we? I even got this off her." You retort, presenting your stolen sword. You wedge the tip into the dirt and lean your elbow between the spikes where the pommel would be.

She leans away from the sword and flicks her hand at you. "Do not lay that blade before me, fool! Though it no long burns with her strength, it still holds the essence of arrogance." Her head droops and you see her expression tightens beneath her hood. "It is a symbol of the very arrogance that brought great Izalith to ruins…"

At her demand, you store the spiky sword in your bottomless bag. It turns out to be more of an effort than you'd expect, with several spikes catching on the bag as you lower it in. Once you've finally got that out of the way, though, you return to your conversation.

"Speaking of arrogant, is everyone from that Izalith place like that?" Behind you, you hear Oscar make a strange noise.

"I suggest you choose your next words very carefully."

"I-I didn't mean it like that!" You rush to correct, waving your hands about in hopes of calming her. "I just, uh… The spider lady was pretty snobby. She said-"

"You spoke to her?" Quelana interrupts quickly, snapping her head up. "You heard her speak, in a comprehendible exchange?"

You flinch at her sudden sharpness. "Uh, yeah. Although it was mostly just her insulting me. Oh, she said we were in the 'lair of Quelaag.' Is that a thing with names from Izalith or something?"

Quelana goes quiet for some time, grip tight on her book.

"Quelaag…" Her voice is quiet, lacking any of the derision it's held so far. "Of all the daughters of Izalith, she inherited her pride the most."

"You know her, then?" You ask, crouching down to Quelana's level.

She nods. "She is… was my sister. Long ago."

You look her up and down. "But you don't have any, uh…"

"Izalith was a civilisation of demons and humans both. Not all embraced the witch's transformations, even among her daughters. Yet…" Her gaze drifts past you towards the spider hill behind you. She sighs and shakes her head. "Yet, the arrogance that created demon-kind could not be satisfied. Our great home was brought to ruins."

She huffs and straightens, returning her gaze to you. "But I ran from that place long ago. I do not know why my sister has made her nest in this place, nor do I care to learn. Speak of this all no longer. I… I wish to say no more of any of this."

Well, that was a less then ideal result.

Way I see it, Kirika has to options. She can push Quelana and hope she says something that might be useful, but at this point I have my doubts. The other is she just kills Quelaag. Might still be difficult, but we do need to get by her.

[X] Keep talking
-[X] Say that as things are, you're going to have to kill her sister. If she's fine with that, then fine, we'll go try again. But isn't there anything she might want to tell her, or ask, or something? This will be her last chance.

This one seems fine to me, honestly. It's not really pushing too hard (since Kirika pushing people socially has never worked out, girl has a negative social stat), just establishing "look, we're absolutely going to go kill the spider girl, are you sure there's nothing you want us to say to her? That you don't want to come try and talk her down or anything?"

And after that, well...

[lmao] Back to the Undead Settlement BayBee we gonna talk to that fire demon if it's the last thing we do

Wait, wait. Wrong quest. Anyways, next is probably Quelaag round 2, she's injured but likely wary, so hopefully we can rush her down and win before she just floods the arena with lava and drowns Oscar in it.

You scratch the back of your head. "You sure? We need to get past her, so we probably have to take her out. If she's your sister…"

"I said no more! Be gone on your foolish quest! I care not."

"If you say so…" You glance back at Oscar, then back to her. "Is there anything you want us to tell her? You made it sound like you've been out here for a while."

"Away! Go!" She snaps, shooing you with her hand. "Leave me! Get!"

"Okay, okay, I get it!" You huff, turning. Geez, you were only trying to be nice. You don't know what it's like to have a sister, but if Oscar's anything to go by, you thought she would've at least wanted to say something.

"Wait."

You almost don't register the word as coming from Quelana. Her voice is soft and quiet, almost a whisper. When you turn around, she's slumped against the pillar with her head down. Her hands are once again wrapped firmly around her book, and she thumbs a loose page idly.

"If Quelaag is here, then little Quelaan is likely not far away. If she…" Quelana sighs and shakes her head. "She is a kind, naïve girl. I fear what may have become of her after the ruin of our kingdom." Her head raises slightly, but you can't quite see her eyes. "If anyone would know her fate, it would be that fool Quelaag. Please, if you could…"

"No problem." You reply with a thumbs up. "We'll, uh… I'll make sure to ask."

Quelana nods, apparently satisfied, before leaning forward again. "Hmph. Then what are you waiting for? Go on! Off with you!"

Forgetting Oscar can't see or hear any of this, you turn to him and shrug. "Well, I guess we'd better get going, then."

"I take it you've finished with your mysterious witch, then." He replies as the two of you set off for the spider nest.

"Yep. I need to ask the spider lady about someone called Quelaan."

Oscar grunts. "She didn't seem particularly talkative the last time."

You shrug again. "Well, we'll just have to see how it goes."

Entering the giant spider mound is no less unpleasant as the last time. Knowing what awaits you inside only makes it even less inviting. Thankfully, however, the guys with the eggs on their backs still ignore you in favour of praying to… wait, are they praying towards the spider lady? That does explain the eggs, you suppose.

While you'd be surprised if Quelaag stuck around after the damage you did to her, you enter the open space ahead with your weapons at the ready.

Nothing.

No sign of her anywhere, except the blood and burns left from your fight.

"Did we scare her off?"

"Perhaps she's retreated to lick her wounds?" Oscar suggests. "Given our recovery at the bonfire, she came out of the fight the worse off."

"Maybe…"

The two of you step out into the opening, looking around for any trace of Quelaag. While you did do a number on her, she didn't seem like the type to run away. Did she just not expect you to come back so soon? But then, why do you get the feeling that someone is watching you…?

A subtle clicking is all the warning you get, before the giant spider woman drops down onto you. You manage to duck out of the way of her spiked legs as they slam into the ground, but she doesn't let up, and continues thrusting her front legs out at you. You bat the blows away with your claws and jump back a few metres to get some space.

The woman glares furiously at you, lip twisted into a vicious snarl. Her arm and legs are still missing, but the stumps have been overgrown with the same chitinous mess that the rest of her spider limbs are covered in.

"Insolent mortal!" She hisses, taking a step forward. "You dare come back here so soon?"

"W-Wait!" You shout, raising your hands. "I need to ask you something!"

Her spider's tongue snaps out of you, but you sidestep it and take a few more steps back.

"It's about Quelaan! I-!"

"Keep her name from your mouth, you filthy insect!"

She suddenly scurries towards you in a furious charge. You attempt to continue to back away, but trip over a thick clump of web and fall to the ground. Her spider half raises its front legs to crush you.

"How did you learn of her?!" She growls as her legs come down onto you. "What could you wish to gain from her?!"

You just barely roll out of the way before you're impaled, and jump to your feet. "Hold on! We aren't-!"

"I won't let you near her!" She snaps, raising her hand beside her. Fire grows within her palm, far hotter and more ferocious than anything you've summoned. "I will burn before you lay a single one of your filthy fingers on her!"

Oscar approaches her from behind and swings his sword into one of her back legs. It digs into the shell, but Quelaag flicks the limb in a sharp kick before he can do any further, and he's sent flying.

This is going about as well as you could probably have expected.

I can not imagine a faster way of immediately escalating the violence. I was proven right by the rest of the update, but that's not surprising at this point.

We have to make a token effort to tell her Quelana asked about Quelaan. She is teaching us pyromancy after all. I'm not feeling incredibly motivated to make more then a token effort, however. She's done nothing but try to kill Kirika and Oscar, hurling insults all the while.

Still, they are sisters, and Oscar might feel better knowing he's helped a family... I don't know, reunite? Quelaag and Quelana clearly both care about Quelaan, but I'm not getting warmfuzz vibes between the two of them. Family matters are always so difficult.

[X] Shout at her that Quelana wants to know what happened to Quelaan. If she stops fighting for some reason, hear her out. If not...
-[X] Kill her. Try taking off more of her legs on the side already missing one. Keep her attention on yourself as much as you can. If she goes for Oscar, get in her face. Or the spider's face. Putting a claw through that would probably really slow her down.

About as reasonable as we can be, with a murderous flame-demon-spider-lady bearing down on us. Either bringing up Quelana's name makes her hesitate and we can maybe get an actual discussion, or it's time to put her down before we have to play The Floor Is Lava, which Oscar is unlikely to be very skilled at.

"Wait! It's Quelana who wanted to know about her!"

Quelaag tosses the super-hot fireball with a flick of her hand, and it's sent hurtling towards you. You dodge to the side and it flies past, hitting the ground behind. It explodes on impact and leaves a small pool of lava in its wake. You take a careful step away from the pool and look back to Quelaag.

The spider woman has straightened her back and is looking down at you with contempt. Even so, she doesn't follow up her attack.

"Who are you?" She growls, baring her teeth. At least she's willing to talk now.

"Travellers, I guess you could say. Adventurers?" You glance around her large body to check up on Oscar and find him stumbling to his feet. You shrug as you return your attention to Quelaag. "I've learned a bit of pyromancy from Quelana though, so she asked us to ask about Quelaan for her."

She scoffs and goes to fold her arms, realising with a twitch that she's down a limb. "Then that pompous fool is still alive, after all." She takes a few steps forward to loom over you and leans down, her lips twisted into a scowl. "And what does she want with our dear sister?"

"Uh…" You scratch your head at the question. You probably should've asked for more specifics. "Something about your kingdom collapsing. I guess she just wanted to know how she's doing."

Quelaag turns her nose up at this and her spider's tongue flicks out at the air, coming close enough to feel the heat radiating off it. "I am not as unaware of things as she might think." She says, stepping back. "The mortals of the town above bear many of our gifts. Those children who have reached full maturity have told me of the cloaked figure outside."

You frown. "If you knew she was out there, why haven't you talked to her yet?"

"None of the children ventured close enough to confirm whether she was living or a corpse." She begins circling around you, her spider's tongue tasting the air and leaving a wake of shimmering heat. "Besides, I have nothing to say to that woman. She abandoned us in our moment of tragedy, and has cowered out there for far too long."

She clicks her human tongue and stops behind you. "Though, I suppose I should pay her a visit after all, if she plans to send assassins into my lair."

"We're not-"

"Kirika, look out!"

You turn in time to see Quelaag bring down a wave of raging fire towards you. Without thinking, you duck to the side and swing a claw up to catch her attacking arm. Your claw cuts into it at the elbow and it cleaves through flesh and bone with little trouble. Your other hand moves to thrust a claw into the spider, plunging in through the mess of eyes almost to your hand.

Quelaag screams in pain and her spider legs give out. Her human body collapses onto her spider, her blood boiling on the creature-half's hot skin.

"D-Damn you, filth!" She hisses through clenched teeth. "May Mother's flames consume you!"

Her human and spider bodies both begin to glow with a burning energy. The cracks and wounds in their bodies drip with molten fire, and you feel an intense heat radiate off of her. Thinking quickly, you slow her time as much as possible and leap away.

She explodes in a violent blast that sprays molten fire across the chamber. You make it out of the splash radius thanks to your slowing magic, and stare at the charred remains of the spider woman from the edge of a burning pool.

She… killed herself?

*Chaos Witch Quelaag defeated*

"One less monster in the world." Oscar murmurs as he steps up beside you. He glances around at the eggs on the walls. "Perhaps it'll stem the tide of those creatures outside, too."

"Uh, yeah. Maybe." You reply half-heartedly. Why did she blow herself up? Did you really give her enough reason to hate you that much?

As Quelaag's corpse cools, you notice a faint glow amid the embers. You leap over the lava to investigate and find a warm soul glowing in her chest. It's golden white but has flickers of red-orange flame mixed in, akin to how your soul gem looks after accumulating corruption. You reach out to the soul and feels strangely solid in your hand. Still wispy and fluid, but somewhat physical at the same time.

As you lift up the soul, dark shadows linger in its place. Strange black shapes burn up through Quelaag's chest and dance about in the air just above her skin. You remember Oscar picking up something similar at some point. Humanity sprites.

[X] Take both

Well that went far easier than expected. Oscar please improve, Kirika is gonna have a heart attack at this rate and while she can survive that, it would be very unpleasant.

Also damn straight we'll take the loot, we have no real reason not to in-character.

[X] Take both

Leaving them here just means some monster or Hollow comes by for them later. We can offer Quelaag's soul to Quelana or Quelaan. I'm not sure either would want it, but otherwise it's just a lot of souls to Kirika. Useful for Pyromancy, but not at all necessary. The Humanity we'll need if Oscar starts hollowing again.

Though... I think this is the first major boss soul we've gotten so far? Something weird might happen. In which case we definitely need to pick it up.

A shame Quelaag couldn't stop trying to kill Kirika, but sometimes it do be like that.

After this, should we head stright for the bell first, back track to Quelana and tell her what happened, or try looking for Quelaan first? Looking for Quelaan feels best.
