--[X] Ask more about Pyromancy

Some random dude you rescued from a barrel is offering to teach you how to shoot fire from your hands. What reason is there to not accept?

Really though, pyromancy. Shooting fire from your hands. It's really no question.

"I mean, if you're offering." You say with a shrug, trying to sound cool and definitely not way too excited about this. "So, what do I need to do?"

Laurentius smiles and gives a satisfied nod. "Hold out your hand. Whichever you prefer to have free in a pinch."

You obediently hold out your left hand and he wraps both of his own around it.

"Right, now close your eyes and relax. This may hurt, but just think of it as kindling a fire."

Again, you do as he says and close your eyes. You do your best to loosen your body, focusing entirely on your hand.

Laurentius closes his grip on your hand, and you feel a faint warmth against your palm. That warmth grows rapidly, until you start to feel the flickers of fire brushing against you. You resist the urge to pull away and regret it. The heat grows stronger still, burning into your hand. You can feel your flesh searing under the intensity and the heat runs up your arm, culminating in your chest. You let out a yelp of pain.

"Kirika?!" Oscar exclaims, stepping forwards to intervene.

Before he can do anything, however, Laurentius releases your hand and the burning stops. The pain still lingers in your hand and the heat spreading throughout your body is still alight, but something immediately feels strange.

The burning in your chest recedes to something almost comforting, like the feeling of eating a filling meal. Instead of a roaring agony, it's become something of a subtle flicker.

You look down at your hand, the burnt flesh already starting to heal.

"What… was that?" You ask, looking up at Laurentius.

"A fragment of flame." He replies, holding out his hands in a bowl shape. "Now, your hand, please. Don't worry, it won't hurt this time."

You're somewhat reluctant after what just happened, but do as he says and place your hand palm-up in his.

"Focus on the fire that has been kindled within you. Imagine it as an extension of your will, of your soul. Draw it out and focus it on your palm. Picture it in your mind."

You try your best, imagining the heat creeping up your arm just a moment ago happening in reverse. The warmth in your chest flickers to life, though not so much that it hurts. It slowly runs down your arm and to your palm, where is swirls as if trying to escape.

After a few seconds, a tiny spark flickers to life in your palm, floating just above your skin.

"Like the Witch of Izalith gifted her flame to her daughters and Lord Gwyn rewarded his allies with fragments of his soul, we pyromancers pass down flickers of our flame to the next generation." Laurentius explains as the tiny flicker grows. "I have given you a portion of my own burning soul to nurture and grow. With it, you can harness the fire that burns within you and give it physical form."

Listening to all this, you stare down at the little flame in your palm with awe. This fire is you. Really, this isn't much different from holding your soul gem in your hand. This, however, has a completely different feeling. Like something intimate and… more real.

You look up at Oscar, grinning giddily. "Look, Oscar! I'm doing pyromancy!"

He nods. "Indeed. Uh… well done."

"And now, your first use of your flame…" Laurentius says, but pauses and lowers his hands. "Ah, actually this might not be the best place for it. Let's move somewhere less… flammable."

While you can't smell anything yourself on account of having switched off your sense of smell, you notice Oscar glance over at the barrels.

No one objects, so the three of you head back out of the storeroom. The prospect of wading through the back slosh again doesn't seem too popular with Oscar and Laurentius, so instead you hop up onto a ledge and drag some of the benches over. Pushing them down, you gradually build a makeshift pile for the two guys to climb upon.

Laurentius seems satisfied with the dining area as a 'learning pyromancy' space and turns to you. "Alright, this will do. For now, I'll show you the most basic pyromancy."

You nod enthusiastically and give him some room, watching closely.

He raises his hand, a flame flickering in the palm. After a moment, he thrusts his hand out and a puff of fire erupts from his palm, quickly disappearing into the air.

"This is called Combustion. As you can see, it's a simple flame, but it's quick to cast and simple to use. Good for using in a pinch."

You nod enthusiastically and step up beside him. You hold out your hand the same way he did, watching the flame flicker to life in your palm. Taking a deep breath, you focus on the heat in your hand. You picture the fire Laurentius summoned from his hand in your mind, repeating it over and over to make sure you have it exactly right.

When you trust out your hand, a small puff of flame shoots out before quickly dying out.

"I did it!" You shout, luckily remembering you have a flame in your hand before you start clapping in your excitement.

"Amazing…" Laurentius muses, stroking the hair on his chin. "I've never seen someone take to pyromancy so quickly. You clearly have a knack for it."

"Hear that, Oscar?" You ask, looking at your knight friend with a giddy grin. "I have a knack for pyromancy!"

He chuckles at your enthusiasm. "So it would seem." He turns to Laurentius. "So, where shall you go now? There's a place not far from here that is relatively safe, if you have nowhere else to go."

Laurentius nods. "Firelink Shrine, right? I've heard of it." He shrugs. "I suppose it's as good a place as any. I came down here in search of the city of Izalith, but it'd definitely be a good idea to go recuperate before continuing my search."

"We can lead you there, if you wish." Oscar offers, nodding his head up towards the way out. "It's not far, but there may be some dangers along the way."

Laurentius chuckles. "I'm sure I'll be fine. I have my pyromancies, after all."

You nudge his shoulder and give him a smirk. "Nah, we can show you the way. I want to know more about shooting fire out of my hands!" You lean in closer, glancing over at Oscar. "Oh, and I think the smell is getting to him."

Oscar stares at you when he sees the smirk that forms on Laurentius' face. "Alright then. We'll return to Firelink together?"

"Sounds fine." Laurentius replies with a nod.

With everyone in agreement, you all start making your way up to Firelink Shrine.

Along the way, Laurentius explains a bit more about pyromancy to you.

According to him, pyromancy began when the Witch of Izalith gained a powerful soul from the Flame, imparting that power to her seven daughters. They were so powerful that they could tear down the great archtrees that hold up the world. When the witch attempted to use her own soul to recreate the Flame, however, the city was destroyed and abandoned by the few who survived.

Apparently, the last remaining of the witch's daughters taught the great Salaman, who then passed it on to the people of the Great Swamp.

"A pyromancer's flame is a part of their very soul, our existence alight." He explains. "It grows stronger as our soul does, until we burn as brightly as the original Chaos flames of old." He chuckles bitterly. "Of course, we need to be careful when handling such primal power. The pyromancies passed down nowadays is less chaotic than those used by the witches of Izalith, but it can still burn if handled without care."

"So… what would happen if someone tried to use those old pyromancies?" You ask, lapping up every word. "Would you be able to?"

Laurentius grins. "That's actually why I travelled here after becoming Undead. Attempting to learn the old pyromancies would be a thing of dreams, whether I succeeded or not. The lost city of Izalith remains somewhere deep below Lordran, and I hope to discover the ancient secrets of the place. Of course, I doubt there would be anyone left to teach me, so I can only hope that the rumours that the last daughter of chaos still lingers are true…"

The loud caw of the giant crow echoes across the shrine as your group finally wanders down the stairs to the ruins. Curiously, you notice Griggs has disappeared.

"Well, thanks for the escort." Laurentius says as you reach the circular clearing with the bonfire. "I think I'll go find a spot to make myself at home, if you don't mind."

He wanders off, leaving you alone with Oscar.

"So… you don't like pyromancers?" You ask, eyeing him curiously.

He shifts oddly. "It's… not that I dislike them, certainly they're more trustworthy than the fiends of Vinheim. It's just… it is difficult to overlook stigma. As he mentioned, they don't mesh well with society."

You frown, stretching your arms behind your head and looking up at the thin streams of sunlight seeping through the big three above. You never really got along well with society either, so maybe you really are suited for pyromancy…

As you muse, Oscar wanders over to the bonfire and sits down into a weary lump. Even from the other side of the clearing, you can hear his tired sigh.

This is the most sensible thing I've ever heard.

Heat and cold, light and dark. Behold, Disparity.

It's like another soul, one might say. Kirika still has her soul, but it's in a rock. This flame lives within her now, perhaps in the hole her soul once resided in.

Maybe I'm over reaching, but the importance of Fire here can not be overstated. Something of meta physical significance might be starting here.

Might this even be the start of another soul? The beginning of someone new, possibly literally? Like Kirika takes on too much corruption at one point, and her witch runs off to find Oriko but then her body gets up and she's like "what".

Sure, souls aren't Souls, but they are life, and pyromancy is the gift, nay, a shard form a Lord Soul. A tiny shard, but it's still substantial.

Unrelated to that.

I definitely want to know at least a bit more then the cliff notes of pyromancy, but he hopefully has some intel related to how to get down to Blight Town, or at least through the sewers. I'm open to talking to Oscar about Cara now, but I'd like to wait until he's cleared some of the sewage out of his nose.

This is everything I ever wanted! Lore and cool abilities that don't seem to threaten to turn us into an eldritch monster yet and explosions, oh my!

Particularly interesting that the Pyromancy Flame seems connected to our body more than the shiny rock we carry around. Which makes sense, as souls, be they regular or Lord, are perfectly fine being infused into inanimate objects (DS1 upgrade system is the best and I won't hear otherwise), and ours is certainly animated.

Lore! hungry Hollow screech

Ahem. While I'm very curious and want to compare sins with Oscar (as if, we have him beat easy! Hah! Wait…), I can give him a minute to settle.

I am even more willing to pester Laurentius as long as he can take it. Though I wouldn't want to force the author to write loredump after loredump, much as I enjoy them.

I feel like leading into the Bell in FPS-Droptown might be a touch too meta. Though he did say it's below Lordran, so I'm game to try. I'd also like to know anything he's willing tell us about the Depths, assuming there's anything to tell, it could save us some Estus. Or possibly, hopefully, warn us about the basilisks. So it makes sense to me to

Part of me wonders if we should be taking a hint here, with the Oscar option being available basically all the time, but honestly I'd rather wait for a better opportunity or to press him if he has another slipup like the earlier one.

Seems like as good a plan as any, more information is almost always useful. If we want to try talking to Oscar about his slip up or the book of sins we can always give it a try afterwards, though I'd still favour giving him just a little longer it might be one of the best opportunities we get.

You decide to give Oscar some space. You want to ask about that whole 'Cara' thing, but even you know it'd be stupid to bring it up while he's still sulking like this. Besides, you have a new pyromancer friend to talk to instead.

You find Laurentius in the raised area right before the ruins themselves. He looks to be making himself comfortable in the corner by a dead tree, pushing down and burning the grass to his liking.

He looks up as he hears you coming and smiles. "Ah, Kirika. Come to check up on me?"

You shrug and look down at the grass at his feet. "Why are you burning the grass? Wouldn't that just make it all ash-y?"

Laurentius glances down at the burnt areas and chuckles. "Ah, well, it's something of a nostalgic thing, really. My homeland is humid, but there's plenty of smoke and fire thanks to all the pyromancy. It's a bit silly, but the smell and feel of ash make me feel more at home." He clears his throat and looks back up at you. "Ah, and it's an easy way to clear out the thicker patches of grass."

"I see…" You mumble, only somewhat getting what he means. You rub your hands together awkwardly, trying to think of some idle chatter to lead into what you really want to talk about. That's how conversations work, right? Never starting at the actual point?

Laurentius sits down in his burnt patch with an exaggerated grunt and smiles up at you. "So, I take it you want to hear some more about pyromancy, then?"

"Huh?" You tilt your head and stare down at him. "How… How did you know?"

He chuckles and scratches his beard. "You were rubbing your hands. You get burned pretty nastily when the flame first appears, and your rubbing implies you were thinking about it."

"Uh, yeah…" You mumble. The burn has long healed by now and you'd honestly completely forgotten about it already. You really were just idly rubbing your hands, but, if it works as a lead into pyromancy, then that's fine by you.

You sit down cross-legged in front of Laurentius, hands in your lap like a little kid on the school mat.

Laurentius smirks at this and folds his arm. "Alright, what did you want to know?"

You think for a moment. "Uh, what about that Izalith place you mentioned? It's full of a bunch of super cool pyromancy, right?"

He chuckles. "Straight to the legendary stuff, eh? Well, there's honestly not a lot more to tell." He scratches his beard thoughtfully, trying to think of anything interesting.
"As I said before, the city is located deep beneath Lordran. It was the home of the original pyromancers, and there was a certain level of respect for pyromancy here because of it. The old witches took part in the war against the dragons, after all. Of course, that was all before the city was consumed by Izalith's fire and Lord Gwyn sent his knights to cleanse it of demons."

"Wait, demons? So, demons come from Izalith?" You ask, frowning. You vaguely remember a few people mentioning it, but now that you think about it, demons are meant to be from hell or something, right? Does that make Izalith this world's hell?

Laurentius makes a face. "Unfortunately, yes. According to the stories, the Witch Izalith tried to use her own soul to create a new Flame. It backfired, consuming the city and transforming all its inhabitants into monsters. Apparently, Lord Gwyn assaulted the city not long after, and the ones that returned still hold their blackened armour as a reminder."

You lean back, laying against the grass with your head propped up on your arms. Little flashes of sunlight creep in through the leaves of the giant tree above, like embers flickering through the air. "It must be pretty close, then, right? Like, wouldn't it take a while to figure out what happened if everyone there was demon-ified? There must be a way down there."

Laurentius nods. "That's right. I've heard there's a way there at the foot of Blighttown, the slums beneath the Depths. I was heading there to take a look when I was caught by those butchers – thanks again for saving me, by the way."

"Blighttown, Blighttown… I think I've heard that before…" You furrow your brow and try to think. Didn't someone say it was down below? Ah, Andre mentioned the second bell is down beneath it! "Oh! Kind of random, but do you know anything about the Bells of Awakening? I'm helping Oscar look for them, and I think the second one is near Blighttown."

He scratches his beard for a moment. "I've heard about a Bell of Awakening used to gain entrance to Izalith. I would assume it's the one you're looking for. Never heard of anyone who's actually reached it and came back, though."

You can't help but roll your eyes. Goody, another big bad monster guarding this one too, presumably. Nothing you and Oscar can't handle.

"Unfortunately, I can't offer more help." Laurentius continues. "I didn't get far into the Depths, and what I did see suggests the place is an absolute labyrinth. Heard some pretty unwelcoming sounds down there, too."

"I'm sure we can manage." You say, sitting back up and stretching. "You want to get down there too, right? We'll probably head off before you, so we'll let you know if we find a way down."

"Thanks ahead of time, then." He replies, nodding. "Ah, you've listened to all this about ruined cities and demons, but I'm sure you're more interested in the more practical stuff. How about I teach you some more pyromancy?"

You perk up at this and nod enthusiastically. The two of you are soon stood over by the edge of the cliff, overlooking the deep valley below.

"Alright" Laurentius say, igniting the flame in his hand. "How familiar are you a fireball?"

"It's the classic fire magic, right? 'I cast fireball', that kind of thing."

He gives you an odd look, but nods. "Uh, yeah… Anyway, it's something like the opposite of combustion. Where the latter is useful for close, fast use, fireballs take a bit longer to produce but travel some distance before fading out."

To demonstrate, he raises his burning hand and clenches it. The fire flickers out and grows before he tosses it as a small ball of fire. The fireball flies for a while before flickering out a ways down the valley.

"The standard fireball isn't the most powerful flame, so it will flicker out and die after a short distance, but allows for a pyromancer to defend themselves without having to get too close."

You nod and step up to the edge of the cliff, creating your own flame in your hand. The warmth brushes your palm, sending a comforting heat through your body.

"It's only slightly more complicated than combustion." Laurentius explains. "Instead of releasing a small burst of fire right away, concentrate it in your hand. Give it a bit of shape."

You nod again and concentrate on your hand. You close your fingers around the flame and feel the warmth gathering in your palm. You will the fire out just as you did before, but this time try to hold it back. You imagine the flame in your hand growing larger, the wisps of fire tickling your skin. While you see wisps of flame flickering out from between your fingers, you throw your arm forward like tossing a baseball.

Just like a baseball, the ball of fire arcs through the air, falling into the valley below. It's not as large as Laurentius' was and dies a few seconds faster, but you threw it nonetheless.

You can't help but bounce giddily at the sight, causing an amused chuckle from Laurentius.

"Good job. You learn pretty quick." He says with a nod. "Of course, there's more to pyromancy than tossing a few weak flames about, but you've got the basics down already. I can teach you a few more things, if you really want to, but it'll cost some souls."

You give him a half-smirk. "Ran out of my free trial, huh?"

"Not at all. I don't really care too much about compensation here." He replies. "As I said before, your flame is a part of your soul. Souls are used to attune your flame to different ways of manipulating the fire. Kind of like how a sorcerer needs to properly 'mould' his soul to use spells, I think." He shrugs and nods down at your flame. "Of course, a significantly powerful flame doesn't need to be attuned to weaker forms, but that also requires strengthening it with souls."

You and Oscar have 8,756 souls between you.

Pyromancies:
Fire Orb – 8,000 souls
Iron Flesh – 2,000 souls
Flash Sweat – 2,000 souls

Flame Ascension:
+1 – 500 souls
+2 – 1,000 souls (1,500 total)
+3 – 2,000 souls (3,500 total0
+4 – 3,000 souls (6,500 total)

Jokes aside, am I understanding this bit correctly:

To mean that by upgrading our flame directly, we can potentially just learn higher level pyromancies for free, the way we got Combustion and Fireball?

Pyromancer Flame levels
To mean that by upgrading our flame directly, we can potentially just learn higher level pyromancies for free, the way we got Combustion and Fireball?

That's correct. I'll be grouping pyromancies into different "levels" that coincide with a level range of the flame. Learning a pyromancy from 2 levels below the level group your flame is will be free.

Level 1 (0 to +4): Combustion, Fireball, Iron Flesh and Flash Sweat
Level 2 (+5 to +9): Great Combustion, Fire Orb, Fire Whip and Posion Mist
Level 3 (+10 to +14): Great Fireball, Firestorm, Toxic Mist, Undead Rapport and Power Within
Level 4 (+15): Fire Surge, Fire Tempest, Acid Surge and Black Flame
Level 5 (Chaos): Great Chaos Fireball, Chaos Storm and Chaos Fire Whip

These groupings are probably subject to chance, since I'm honestly not super familiar with pyromancy beyond fireball and fire orb, but gives a general idea.

Fire Orb is too expensive right now, and I'm not sold on the other pyromancies available. Iron Flesh would be nice in a tight spot, but considering how slow it would make Kirika, eh. Risky.

We've already got a pair of good spells. Combustion when we want something close range with a magical, firey kick, and fire ball for the same at range. I'd like to upgrade to Fire Orb, but it just costs too much.

So I'll just vote for upgrading.

With the confirmation of "stronger flame = can just learn spells", yep absolutely starting with some pyromancy flame upgrades. Even if we don't go all the way, there's some fairly useful support pyromancies we can learn at a minimum which might be more useful than in-game because narrative mechanics VS game mechanics, like Iron Flesh and Undead Rapport. Plus, we probably want to have some pyromancy skill already established if we run into Quelana.

Wait, had a thought. Iron Flesh greatly increases Kirika's weight, yes? Because she temporary made of iron. But it also greatly increases Poise.

Could we use that to say, jump on the back of Thooty the Sewer Dragon, then cast the spell to keep it from bucking us off? Because then we could just stay there, completely put of his reach while stabbing/burning him to death.

In that case it looks very attractive for the price. 2,000 souls aint much for that at all.

Improving the flame seems the easiest path to take, plus we could use a head start since Quelana doesn't talk to scrubs. We eventually need what, +10 to catch her attention? Iron Flesh would completely tank our fighting style, since the implication is that it makes you as flexible as iron, and I doubt anything truly dangerous would have a problem chewing/chopping through an us-sized block of iron. Though I am curious if it could interact with the ninja flip ring, but that's far off.

On the other hand, Flash Sweat could be very useful in Blighttown, for all it's not a pretty "burn fools to death" button.

But I'm frankly uncomfortable carrying around a ton of souls, even if we haven't died so far (also very apprehensive of how that mechanic might work, rather not find out), so I'd rather we buy at least something.

Let's not procrastinate anymore. Clear the air, click through Oscar's dialogue until he repeats himself. That's how you make best friends in Lordran, right? fingers crossed he won't hate our lovable psycho self forever and ever

jump on the back of Thooty the Sewer Dragon

I…don't think that's how it works? Also it's huge, made of teeth and muscle and sits in a wet sewer, I suspect we'd just slide down if it doesn't shake us off. I think we'd have an easier time dodging its slow movements instead, though I certainly want to try out all the pyromancies at some point.

It would be. If we can just run and jump around like normal we'd be like a living wreaking ball.

Heck, I'll change my vote for that. It's really not that many souls. We'll get 25,000 killing the Gaping Dragon. That would pay for everything, and so far it doesn't seem like we can improve our stats. And Sorcery has... problematic teachers so far. Might as well put everything into pyromancy stuff.

You clap your hands together and rub them enthusiastically. "Well, no reason to stop here. What else have you got?"

Laurentius chuckles and leans forwards. "Nothing as flashy as tossing fireballs, I'm afraid. Honestly, while they're quite useful, to outsiders, they can seem a bit…"

You tilt your head slightly as he trails off. "Whatever it is, I want to learn it. I can't be that weird if it's pyromancy, right?"

He grins wryly for a moment, then nods. "I can teach you a few more defensive pyromancies for you, if you're really interested. One for blades and one for other pyromancy."

"Okay, that doesn't seem that strange." You say, sitting up on the low wall along the cliff. "I usually just outrun danger, but defence is good."

"Haha, well, perhaps this first one will make that a bit more difficult." He replies as he holds out his pyromancer flame. He takes a deep breath and you see his flame begin to grow with a strangely duller flicker. You expect him to flick his hand out or make a fire shield or something, but instead he pushes the flame to his chest.

Laurentius grunts as his skin starts to turn a shiny grey, starting from his chest and rapidly spreading outward. Once his whole body has taken this strange shine, you can hear faint metallic grinding as he shifts.

"This is called Iron Flesh." He explains, pulling back one of his sleeves to give you a better look. You can hear an uncomfortable grinding as he moves. "As the name implies, it makes your skin a kind of living iron. Hitting someone with this is like trying to hit an iron wall."

Leaning in for a closer look, you tap your hand against his arm. It's solid and makes a metallic tink.

"Okay, but what makes it difficult?"

"Well, it doesn't just make your skin as hard as iron." He replies, before stepping back and walking in a circle. He moves stiffly, like a toy soldier, and the grinding sound is horrible. Thankfully, it's quiet enough that you'd be able to ignore it in a fight, but you don't really want to hear it unless you have to.
"It makes it as heavy as iron too."

You shrug. "Well, I guess it'd probably still be helpful in some situations. So, what about the other one? That's obviously the one that stops weapons, but what about the defence against other pyromancy?"

Laurentius exhales deeply and the Iron Flesh dissipates from his skin in the reverse of when he cast it. He smiles uncomfortably.

"Well, that's the part that outsiders find… unpleasant. It's called Flash Sweat." Your face must drop at this, because he winces. "Unfortunately, it's exactly what it sounds like."

You shudder at the thought, but try to put on a confident look. "A-Ah, I'm sure it's not that bad, right? I mean, I'm sure it's not actual sweat… right?"

Laurentius sighs and rubs the back of his neck. "It indeed is. Flash Sweat is giving the flame within you the properties of a physical fire. It doesn't burn, but your body reacts by releasing so much sweat that it helps resist fire."

You stare blankly at him as he explains this, then ask "So… it makes you… sweat a lot?"

He nods slowly.

You take a deep breath and clasp both hands together in front of your mouth. "Just… how many other pyromancers do you think are in Lordran?"

"With the land in the state it is, probably not many." He replies grimly. "But I'm sure the chaos-spawns of the old city still linger deep below."

Which is exactly where the second bell is supposed to be. Meaning you'll probably be running into fire monsters soon enough. Also meaning being resistant to fire would be helpful.

Taking another deep breath, you try not to wince. "It… sounds, uh… useful."

"If it helps, both of these pyromancies run on the same idea. The result is different, but being able to actualize the flame within you is the basis of a fair few more advanced pyromancies."

"It doesn't really, but that's probably good to know." You reply before looking down at your flame.
"So, how does this attuning work?"

Laurentius takes your hand with both of his, and thankfully the sweat seems to have vanished, so maybe it works like the Iron Flesh does. "It's essentially feeding your flame souls like you would feed a normal fire kindling. Just close your eyes and focus. I can guide you through it."

You do as he says and feel his hands wrap around yours. Taking a deep breath and slowly letting it out, you focus on the warmth within your chest. It flickers under your internal gaze and you sense Laurentius' own power nudging it along. You will souls from you're your soul to move from the gem at your neck and into the flame, causing it to grow. You picture the spells in your mind as you do so, and Laurentius guides the souls into the flame. Somehow, you know exactly how far to go and when to stop.

You let out another breath and open your eyes, finding Laurentius doing the same.

"Well, that was… something."

"It's definitely an experience, touching the flame within." He replies, smiling faintly. "But now you know how to feed your flame. And there's not much difference between attuning your flame and outright growing it."

"Oh, you said something about strengthening my flame earlier, right?"

He nods and folds his arms thoughtfully. "That's right. It's similar to how we undead use souls to enhance our bodies. I can show you that too, but it becomes progressively more expensive as the flame becomes grows."

Doing your best to mentally calculate how many souls you have, you give him a wry smirk. Ah, well maybe I should save a few souls, then. Better only do a bit of 'strengthening.'"

With a chuckle, Laurentius once again closes his hands around yours. You repeat the same process as before, this time without needing to picture any new spells. Your flame grows as you feed it souls, and by the time you open your eyes again, its presence is noticeably brighter.

Laurentius exhales and withdraws his hands. "Well, I think we should leave it at that for today. I'd like some more time to settle in here and plan out what I'm going to do next." He gives you a tired smile. "Thank you for lending me your time. Truly."

You shrug the sentimentality off with an awkward chuckle and shrug.

I have returned!
...again!

Ended up just doing the first part, since I didn't sleep properly last night and started running out of energy as I was writing this. Feel free to go talk to Oscar like was voted for next, or do something else.

Killer. And yeah, Flash Sweat actually would help a lot with quela- queag- uh, flaming sword wielding, lava spitting giant spider lady person.

Anyway, let's go ruin things with Oscar.

It's probably too much of a leap from "internalizing flame" to "forcefully shoving our flame into someone for ludicrous gibs". Doesn't stop me from dreaming, though. Today, learning Flash Sweat. Tomorrow, inventing Sacred Flame!
