"Hey, can we talk about your sister a bit?"

"I'D RATHER DIE THAN TALK ABOUT MY SISTER" Explodes violently
...Well, mission accomplished, I guess??? Time to find out what happens when Kirika picks up a major soul.

[X] Take both

[X] Take both

I finally catch up only to see Quelaag choose to be Stupid Evil over accepting Kirika's Superior Diplomacy? Shame. Still, even Bestbuddy's incredible social skill (pfft) can't win them all and at least we got the loot. We should definitely take the humanity, since Oscar seems incapable of staying un-Hollowed without us, the scrub.

Next up should be the Bell and Fair Lady? Hopefully we manage to climb back up to Firelink soon, I'm honestly kinda done with this dump.

Part 120: Quelaag's Domain VII
[X] Take both

You aren't sure what makes this soul different from all the others you've picked up, but something tells you it's important. You open your bottomless box and take care when storing it away. This soul seems more… real than the wisps of white you've seen before. You don't want to damage it if you can help it.

As for the humanity sprites, you're sure Oscar can find some use for them, whatever they're for. Strangely though, they almost seem alive. The little black wisps shrink back as you reach out towards them, as if trying to escape. You have no trouble catching them, however, and you wrap your hand around them to retrieve them too.

Your entire body is suddenly run through by a spark of pain. Every nerve in your body screams and you jolt back hard. Your hands spasm and drop the humanity, and your mind goes entirely blank.

Fear and panic flood into your emptied mind. Despair, for not being able to save Oriko, for being kept away from her, for failing to achieve her goals. Horror, at the things you've done, at what your failure drove Oriko to do. Something deep, deep down rises up from the darkest places of your mind, and you feel a despicable dread.

You've done so many terrible things in the name of love. You were enticed by a simple act of kindness, and you let yourself become a monster.

Strange flickers dance across your vision. You see little cotton-ball blobs dance about the edge of your sight, seemingly sprouting from the very wall itself. The electric pain coursing through you begins to consolidate in your sides, and it feels like something is attempting to slice its way out from the inside. You think you hear the muffled shouts of Oscar calling your name, but your entire world spins like water flowing down a drain.

Your soul gem appears in the last vestiges of your vision, blackened and overrun with a sickly glow. Your body goes numb as your vision fades.

You jolt awake suddenly, a rush of warmth flooding your system. You grab onto yourself to fight an attack of shakes, and find you're drenched in sweat. Before you can comprehend what's going on, you're grabbed bodily and pulled into a tight embrace.

"Oh, thank the gods! You're alright!"

You pull yourself free of Oscar, strangely desperate to escape the cold of his armour. Even hidden by the helmet, it's clear he's worked up into a fuss. Rushed breathing, shaking hands, shouted words. Geez, it's as if you almost died.

You didn't die, right…?

Vague impressions of what just happened begin to slowly trickle in. You shudder and hold your head.

Your soul gem. You haven't been keeping an eye on your soul gem. Did you let it get too bad?

That has to be the explanation. Those thoughts that came to you… they weren't real. At least not those regarding Oriko. You could never hate what you had to do for her. You could never despise keeping her hands clean.

But if the problem really was your soul gem, why was it so sudden? You don't remember much from the time right before you became a witch, and Oriko didn't say anything either. It shouldn't have been such an abrupt change though, right? You look around for any clues as to what could've caused it.

The lava from Quelaag's death has cooled and her body has gone cold. You find that strange, because Oscar's boots and lower legs are twisted and blackened. You can even make out melted flesh beneath burnt-away cloth. Your soul gem rests neatly beside you, its Citrine shine spotless. One of those little black stones lays near it, blackened and sickly. A single humanity sprite sways over by Quelaag's body, two little white dots watching you like eyes.

Was… was it the humanity? It all happened the moment you touched them. Did it cause some kind of… rush of corruption?

Did you almost become a witch for a second time?

"What happened?" You ask, still feeling groggy. You try to stand, but your legs feel like wet paper.

"You suddenly collapsed." Oscar replies, sounding shaky. He looks down at your soul gem. "That gem of yours. Looked about ready to burst, so I… You mention needing to clean it every now and then, so I…" He shakes his head and lets out a long sigh. "I'm just glad the purging stone stopped whatever was happening to you."

"I think I have an idea of what was going on." You say, eyeing the humanity sprite. You smack your legs and force yourself to stand. It's awkward and fumbly, but you make it up after a few tries. "I think you should hold onto those humanity things from now on." You nod towards the sprite as you collect your soul gem. "Doesn't look like I mesh too well with them."

"The humanity…?" Oscar echoes, looking over at the sprite. He glances between you and it a few times, before deciding not to ask and gets up to retrieve the little black wisp.

"So!" You exclaim, hoping to avoid an awkward worry-worry conversation. "Where to next?"

Oscar looks down at Quelaag's corpse before turning towards the half-visible ruin at the other end of the cave. "Further ahead, I suppose."

The lava may have cooled, but it's still pretty hot to touch. You take long, bounding steps across to avoid the most of it, but Oscar doesn't seem too bothered by it. His steps are a bit off though.

Nonetheless, you make your way up the half-spiral stairs of the ruin and find a small circular space beyond. The room has a big hole in the middle, practically crammed full of eggs, and tall glassless windows out into a significantly larger cave. Another set of stairs comes off the side heading down to a lower floor. Most importantly, though, is the big bell hanging over the central hole, and a lever on the other side of the room.

Oscar steps around the hole to the level and rests a hand on it. He looks up to the bell. "This must be it. The second Bell of Awakening."

"So… are you gonna pull it?"

He hesitates for several seconds, then nods. "Of course."

Gripping the lever with both hands, he yanks it back. There's a heavy thunk, and the bell starts to sway back and forth. The heavy bongs make your ears ring, and you're glad it only lasts a few moments.

You and Oscar look around expectantly.

"Is that it?" You ask. "Wasn't something supposed to happen?"

"I don't know." Oscar admits. He steps over to the edge of the hole and looks up at the bell. "The prophecy never mentioned what happens after this."

"Great…"

You kick the ground, tearing up a thin layer of web from the stone brick. You step over to one of the windows and peer out. Magma drowns most of the cave ahead, with a large ruin of some sort rising out of it further out. You think you spot a path heading around the edge of the cave, but you'd have to take a closer look to be sure.

Oscar lets out an exhausted sigh and kicks one of the eggs. His body loosens and you start to wonder how long it's been since you slept back in the shrine.

"The way seems to go further in, but I suspect it'll be awfully dangerous, if that demon woman was any indication." He says, stumbling over to the window beside you. "Perhaps we should rest for the night? I doubt anything would risk straying into the demon's lair, so it might ironically be the safest place to stay for now."

You give him a look. "You want to sleep in here?"

"Why not? The eggs don't seem particularly… active. These ruins aren't nearly as coated in web, either."

You suppose that's fair enough reasoning. Quelaag probably would've scared most other monsters off, and it'd take some time for things to realise she's dead. You shrug.

"Alright, but we should probably take a look around first. There might even be a bonfire around here."

Oscar chuckles. "I very much doubt that, but if you insist."

The two of you make your way down the stairs, reaching the lower floor to find a round stone slab of some kind in the centre of the room. There's what looks like a pressure plate in the centre, but nothing happens when you step on it. A hole in the wall leads back into the spider tunnels, but you don't pay that much mind. The only thing that could be a problem for staying here are the eggs that cover the back wall, and they're dead white, as Oscar mentioned.

You're about to suggest setting up here when you hear a faint crackle. You frown and follow it, but only find a brick wall.

"Have you found something?" Oscar asks from his investigation of the hole in the wall.

"I don't know…" You admit. Now that you're closer, you can definitely make out the sound of a bonfire, maybe just beyond this wall. It looks like pretty thick stone, though. Would you really be able to hear through it?

You frown, remembering the fake walls back in the giant tree. Taking a closer look, you find the shadows on the wall are mismatched to its surroundings just like those fakes before. You rear up your foot and kick the wall hard. It shimmers and fades into mist.

"Gods… Good spotting." Oscar comments, moving over.

A long passage is revealed on the other side. The warm flicker of a bonfire lights the other end where it looks like a small room opens up. Between you and it, however, is another one of those guys with the eggs on their back.

Unlike the previous three, the egg carrier looks up as you approach. He shifts awkwardly across the ground and inspects you with glassy eyes.

"Oh dear, what have we here?" He says, frowning. "Are you new servants, by chance? Certainly, no other would come here, I think."

You share a look with Oscar. "Uh, we're not-"

"Indeed." Oscar interjects, clearing his throat. "Servants of the uh… spider… witch."

The egg carrier blinks up at him, before shaking his head. "I see. But you don't seem blighted whatsoever… bah, but who am I to doubt the sincerity of another? Go on ahead and see Our Fair Lady. She will provide you with your eggs."

The man shimmies out of the way as you once again share a glance with Oscar, who shrugs in response to your questioning look. Now having to keep up the charade, you both step forward into the room.

The room is absolutely covered in eggs, both the walls and ceiling. The web between them is thicker too, draped across them like extra cocoons of safety. To one side is another human-spider hybrid, this time as pale as a ghost and looking sickly weak. The spider half is barely moving and partially covered in more sick-looking eggs. The spider woman isn't what keeps your attention, however.

The spikey guy that attacked you in the Depth stands over a bonfire in the middle of the room.

You and Oscar immediately ready your weapons, expecting another fight. The other man rests his hand on his sword wearily as well, although he doesn't draw it straight away.

"Stop! What are you doing?!" The egg guy exclaims, waddling in behind you. "Put your weapons away! I won't allow any fighting in Our Fair Lady's presence!"

Ahahahaha… Whoops?

I'm sure I couldn't have predicted that a shard of the Dark Soul, being the essence of Love and Want and all those cheery emotions, might have an adverse effect on an emotion-powered Magical Girl. I am, by the way, very smart.

Obvious dumbassery aside, the symmetry between MGs and Undead is funny. They're both transitory beings, teetering on the cusp of a stable (in a sense) state and constantly fighting to stay there, but one needs to take Humanity, and the other needs to remove it from themselves. I'm sensing a solution here. Although if MGs are allergic to the Dark Soul, maybe they're closer to DS gods? Could a shard of a different Lord Soul have a better effect on Kirika?

In any case, no fighting while emotionally compromised like an idiot. That's Sayaka's job.

Ah yes, the famous Fromsoft room temperature lava.

For as deadly as they make everything else in their games, molten rock is oddly safe to deal with.

Uh. Okay, this might be a little bit of a problem later, because while I'm completely willing to get egged so we can buy this guy's pyromancys, I'm not so sure about it being in character for Kirika.

I'm not so sure about that here. Like there's undeniable parallels, but humans in Dark Souls are just fundamentally different being to what Kirika is. Her gem wasn't running rampant with Greif, it was overflowing with Humanity. She probably wouldn't have become a witch, but something closer to Mundas, which I personally find an even more wretched existence.

Though this might be another clue to what Seeth is up to, or at least how he's making his pseudo witches. Still not sure why he's doing it, but he's really fucked in the head these days.

Kirika, you were just told about Qelaan, who else do you think this is?

Hmm, think we could take Qelaags soul and sword to Andre, get him to make an extra sweet sword?

True, might be a stretch on my part, but Grief isn't well defined. I agree that Kirika would probably turn into something else, since Humanity includes negative and positive emotions both, but Grief to me seems pretty much the same as rampant Humanity (as opposed to regular, questionably tranquil Humanity). Though we're unlikely to figure out the answer any time soon.

It's Kirk, the guy with the spiky shield, spiky sword and spiky armor.
Kirika: At least he has taste.

I see no reason for mercy for the spiky one. He is a murderous asshole.
The Lady gets a pass for her seemingly limited culpability. And possible similarities to Oriko?

Kirk is a dick, it's true, but also it's a pretty dick move for us to walk into his living room going "hey don't worry egg man we are totally friends" and then try to shank him. Besides, actual sit-down talk with the guy instead of trying to murder each other might be interesting.

Considering Kirika already showed the ability to understand Quelaag, much to Oscar's surprise... wouldn't be surprised if she could also understand this one, to the shocked reactions of everyone else in the room.

...probably avoid telling her we just shanked her sister, though.

Actually, we might. Qeulaan needs Humanity. We should see if she's got an interest in that cursed stone Oscar used on Kirika, and the other stones she's used. Given how she works, she might be able take in Kirika's grief right of her soul gem.

Slowly, you lower your claws and dispel them. Oscar seems reluctant, but follows suit. Spiky removes his hand from his sword and grunts. Without a word, he backs away and, upon reaching the edge of the small room, turns to walk down a short passage ending in a dead end.

The egg guy sighs and shuffles on the spot. "Goodness… I don't know what ills you have towards one another, but I forbid you to fight in the presence of Our Fair Lady!"

"Apologies." Oscar says, watching Spiky go. "We've had a run-in with that fellow before. We feared the worst."

"Well, keep your disputes away from here." The egg guy chides. "I won't accept any harm to come to our Lady, whether it be intentional or not."

Speaking of the 'Fair Lady,' you can only assume this pale spider woman is the Quelaan that Quelana was interested in. The poor woman looks as sick as can be; even more than the already dead egg husks that surround her. Her spider limbs twitch painfully as they move and her long white hair is frayed horribly. Her skin is a pallid grey, and her clasped hands tremble slightly. Even so, her face appears almost tranquil. It's as if she's in a light slumber, and a simple nudge would awaken her from whatever nightmares plague her thoughts.

The woman twitches as you lean in and you step back instinctively. Her head lifts slightly and her eyes flicker open. Those eyes are milky glass, and she only vaguely pinpoints your direction.

"Ah, Quelaag? Is that you…?"

You frown, a faint tightness forming in your stomach. "Quelaag? Uh, no... I'm not…"

"Oh, someone else, then…?" Quelaan murmurs weakly. "I-It has been so long since someone has visited… Are you perhaps… one of the assistants?"

"Uh, y-yeah. I guess you could say that." You reply, clearing your throat. "I'm… new? My name's Kirika."

"I see… I am Quelaan. It is very nice to meet you…"

Quelaan goes quiet for a moment, her face twitching in some unseen discomfort. Eventually, she speaks again in a hushed whimper.

"I-If you are one of the assistants, could I ask… If possible, could you tell my dear big sister something for me?"

"Big sister?" You repeat, the knot in your stomach tightening further. "You mean… Quelaag?"

She bobs her head ever so slightly. "Mmh. You see, it has been some time since we last spoke… I think she was crying." She clasps her hands firmer and her long black nails scratch against her skin. "I'm worried… I can't help much as I am, and I know she is pushing herself… Could you please ask her to take care of herself?"

She smiles faintly, in spite of her trembling limps. "I-I might be a little selfish… but, though it hurts, I am… happy so long as we are together…"

You take a deep breath in and out. Your stomach churns and you feel like you're going to be sick. Your head spins. You killed her beloved sister. It may have been in self-defence, but Quelaag's blood is on your hands. And now, this sick, blind woman is saying what you've taken is what's letting her endure her pain.

You remember the time you learned Oriko knew a girl you killed. The first one you ever killed, and they were one of her friends. You've always looked back on your own distress at the realisation as weakness, but now… Maybe Quelaan isn't the first person you've left alone? You've killed so many magical girls. How many of them had little sisters or sick family? How many final lifelines did you sever in your hunt of your own kind?

"K-Kirika? Are you still there…?"

"I…"

You bite back the words that catch in your throat. How long has it been since you've said them? Genuinely said them, with heartfelt meaning.

You reach out and take Quelaan's cold clasped hands in yours. She flinches at the contact, but she doesn't pull away.

"I'm so sorry…"

"Kirika…? I don't…" Quelaan trails off into a light fit of coughs. After a moment, she unclasps her hands and takes yours in each of hers. "I'm afraid I don't understand… but, I-It is okay, whatever… is wrong."

You let out a shaky breath. "But…!"

Again, she smiles despite her trembling. "You are… truly sorry. So… that is enough…"

You avert your gaze from her glassy eyes. Even if they're clouded over, you can't bear to look. You can't bare how sincere she is. Kind and naïve, just as Quelana said. You free your hands and take a step away from her.

"Kirika…?"

"I-I have to go now."

"Oh, okay…" Still, her smile lingers. "Goodbye, then. It was very nice to talk to you."

You can't bring yourself to respond, and step away without another word.

The moment you do, you're jumped upon by the egg guy's demanding questioning.

"You… you speak the tongue of the Fair Lady? How? What did she say? What-?"

"If I may." Oscar interjects, taking a step between you and him. "It would appear their conversation was rather taxing. Perhaps it would be proper to leave it for now?"

Egg guy seems unsatisfied with this rebuke, but relents with a sigh. "Very well… I will leave it be for now. However, I shall be listening closely. Do not speak ill to the Fair Lady."

With this, he waddles off to his spot by the entrance, watching you out of the corner of his eye. Oscar ignores him and turns to you.

"Are you alright?"

It's only now that you realise your cheeks are wet. You wipe your sleeve against your face and find you're crying. You sniff and clear your throat, before forcing a smile.

"I'm fine, just… just a bit of dust."

Oscar's gaze lingers on you, but he doesn't push any further. He gives you a little nod and pats you on the shoulder instead. "Alright. Just remember, I'm here to listen if you want."

With that, he steps over to the bonfire.
