"Kirika, what are you doing?!"

"Listen, just give me a chance. Trust me, I got this!"
Kirika did not, in fact, have this.

[X] Continue trying to beat the spider woman
-[X] Lob a claw at her before charging her head-on. Might get lucky while she's distracted.

I don't got any better plans than this one coming to mind, so... in we go, hopefully we can accomplish something. Maybe throw in some slowing magic, can we target like specific parts of her body? Slow her arms and thus sword swings, or slow just her spider legs to disorient her movement?

It appears we should have farmed more souls before this fight.
Nah, SL... checks stat sheet... uh, whatever SL we are or bust. We got dis just don't get hit and pump all your souls into pyromancy, it's like I'm really replaying DS1.

You try to pull yourself out of the gooey mess, but it seems the body of the spiderling you just crushed has taken it personally. Two of its legs are wrapped around you in a surprisingly sturdy post-mortem hug, and the coating of goo makes your attempt to free yourself a slipper ordeal.

The spider lady apparently considers you momentarily out of action, because she turns her back on you and skitters over towards Oscar. He still makes no sign of moving as she looms over him, and her spider half licks its lips hungrily. The spider nashes its teeth before snapping its tongue out to wrap around Oscar's leg. His leg and armoured greave melt together under the molten appendage, and he's slowly pulled towards the spider's open maw. At the same time, the woman half raises her sword in both hands to plunge down into Oscar to finish him off.

You don't have time to waste.

Positioning your hands against the ensnaring legs, you materialise your claws through them and sever the limbs in one go. You channel more magic into your weapons with the intention of splitting them into as many claws as you can hold, and the resulting heat boils the goo away enough that you're able to get to your feet. With a flick of your wrists, you create a full five claws on each hand.

Instead of rushing straight in, however, you loosen one of your claws. You hurl that claw towards the spider lady, aiming for her arms. You project your magic in a general field to give yourself more time, while not slowing things down so much that you'll pass the claw, and charge at full sprint.

Your claw reaches the woman right as she begins to bring her sword down. It hits her on the elbow and severs the forearm entirely. The shock and impact caused her other hand to release the sword, and it goes spinning off to the side.

The woman screams. She grips the bloody stump with her remaining hand and turns to you with a furious snarl. "You insolent little wretch!"

The spider releases Oscar and quickly turns to face you. It heaves as it does so, and a vomit of molten magma erupts from its mouth. The stuff covers the ground in a fan and creates a burning barrier to block your assault.

Unfortunately for them, you have no interest in playing a literal game of the floor is lava. Timing your steps, you leap into the air right at the edge of the magma and fly over it. You land on the other side in a roll and thrust your claws out to either side as you pass under the spider. Your claws hook around the spider's legs as it staggers about in a panic, and you manage to cut one of the middle legs on either side before it's able to back leap away. It regurgitates more magma as it jumps, but you simply leap out of the way before it reaches you.

"Curse you, mortal!" The woman shrieks through her snarl. "Filth! How dare you?!"

Despite her venom, her spider stumbles as it backs away, bleeding magma from its leg stumps. The woman holds her similarly bleeding arm stump close and grips it tightly.

I have returned from my unannounced pause! Sorry for not saying anything, I kinda... forgot. Whoops.
I'm good now, though. Shouldn't have anything to get in the way of writing for at least a few months, so hopefully we'll be able to get some progress done from here on out.

[x] "How dare I? I tried to do this peacefully. You're the one who turn this into a fight, bitch!"
-[x] Make her suffer for hurting Oscar. Keep taking her apart one limb at time before finally decapitating her.

[X] This is your chance to fall back with Oscar

Let's not as Oscer taken quite a beating, I mean do we get anything from killing her like an ultimate healing potion or something?

Well, we do have to get past her to ring the Bell of Awakening and continue our quest at all. Not to mention, Quelaag would be our first boss to drop a boss soul.

Torn on if we should try for a finisher or just grab Oscar and bail though. Injured as she is, Quelaag is still presumably able to fight, and Oscar's current condition is "immobile in an arena with an angry demon that can slather its surroundings in lava at will".

...Think we could grab the dropped sword and Oscar and make a break for it? Would further "disarm" Quelaag if we've taken both her offhand and her actual weapon.

I'm certainly not inclined to mercy, we gave her the chance to avoid this fight, and she choose it all the same. Currently, she's down a few limbs. Killing her shouldn't be hard at this point.

However, Oscar is in a bad way, and she definitely can't give chase right now. We might have to go for round two with her knowing some of Kirika tricks, but...

[X] This is your chance to fall back with Oscar

Oscar matters more then the bell.

...Yeah, making sure Oscar survives is more important than the kill shot. We can always come back for seconds later, and hey who knows, maybe Quelaag will be slightly more open to negotiation with someone who proved to be an actual threat?

(She won't be open to negotiation her dialogue makes it clear we are puny disgusting mortal how dare we harm someone as great as her)

[X] This is your chance to fall back with Oscar
-[X] ...And maybe chance grabbing that dropped sword on the way out if it seems feasible, if only to further disarm her.

You know, if we run into Quelanna on the way out/back to the bonfire, wonder what she'll think of our encounter with what used to be her sister.

Seems a good compromise between making progress while making sure Oscar makes it out alright

You consider putting this monster down. It wouldn't be the first time you've killed a disarmed foe. This fight has been short but bloody, and you want nothing more than to kill her for what she's done to Oscar. Yet, Oscar is the reason you can't.

Oscar still lies motionless. Even if the immediate danger has passed, his condition is worrying, not to mention this spider woman can apparently vomit lava all over the place. You need to get him out of here while you can.

The spider lady is still keeping her distance, but you don't know how long that's going to last. Without wasting any time, you move over to Oscar and pick him up as gently as you can. This is easier said than done, considering his weight, but you manage to position him across your shoulders so that he shouldn't fall off. You imagine you look pretty silly, given your size difference, but at least it works. You're a magical girl, after all.

You slow the world around you for good measure, before making all speed for the exit. You don't hear the spider lady coming after you, so it's probably safe to say she's too busy worrying about her lack of an arm to bother.

Speaking of lacking an arm…

You pause right at the mouth of the passage. The woman's sword lies partially caught in some of the web spread against the nearby wall. You glance back at the woman, then back at the sword. If the Bell of Awakening really is past her, you'll have to come back eventually. She's still a pain even without the sword, but taking it would at least make the next encounter a little bit easier.

You have to waste a few seconds repositioning Oscar so he doesn't fall off, but you manage to find a spot where you don't have to hold onto him to keep him steady. You don't want to waste anymore time, though, so you summon your claws on your free hand and reach out to the sword. You cut away the web around the blade and hatch the sword in your claws' hooks, then pull it over like you're fishing.

*Dormant Quelaag's Furysword obtained*

Sword acquired, you quickly run into the passage and away from the spider lady.

The guys with the eggs pay you no mind as you pass, and you soon exit the nest and return to the swamp. It's here that your adrenaline from the fight starts to fade and the seriousness of the situation takes over.

You place Oscar down on the flat ground of the passage opening as quickly as you can without outright throwing him and go for the estus flask hanging from his belt. You try to get it off quickly, but this only results in you fumbling with the strap he's put it in. It takes several frustrating seconds to get the flask off, but you immediately move it to his mouth.

You catch yourself as you lift his visor to pour it in. Is it a good idea to make him drink it while he's unconscious? What would happen if he chokes on it? Is it possible to drown from estus, or does the body just magically absorb it or something?

It's too risky to take the chance, but speaking of magically absorbing it, you have an idea. Obviously, if you don't want to risk Oscar drinking the estus, you can just pour it onto the wounds directly.

You unfasten the armour where the spider lady hit Oscar and spread the holes in the chainmail underneath as best you can. You pour the golden liquid into the bloody openings without paying any care to estus conservation. The gold mixes with red and glows strangely, then seeps into Oscar's flesh.

Nothing happens.

All the blood makes it hard to make out much around the wounds, but surely you should be able to see something, right? Does pouring it directly on the wound not work? Was it not enough? Did you do something wrong?

You grip the flask so tightly that you feel it strain. You drop the glass and look around for anything that might help. The murky swamp provides no answers, but a familiar glow catches your eye.

The bonfire. You need to get Oscar to the bonfire.

You scoop Oscar up again and only just remember to collect the sword and flask. You don't bother taking the longer dry route. A straight path is the quickest, and you don't want to waste a second longer. Your foot sinks into the mud more than a few times when you step in patches of deeper water, but you force your way through and reach the bonfire in good time.

You throw down the sword and flask by the fire before laying Oscar down to let the embers drift into his wounds. The openings glow faintly and the blood coating him begins to evaporate. The major damage to the armour remains, but at least the wounds themselves are healing.

And yet, he doesn't wake up.

His chest rises and falls in shallow breaths and each exhale is paired with a dry rasp, but Oscar remains otherwise unmoving.

Shouldn't… shouldn't he wake up? The injury didn't do more than it seemed, did it? You remember hearing about people going into a coma from the shock of an injury. Is this what that is? Is it something even worse?

You slump down onto the ground and hold your spinning head. The weight of everything that's happened today comes crashing down on top of you in an instant. Your carelessness has caused so much grief for Oscar. You've gotten him hurt again and again. You practically drove him mad only a little while ago up in Blighttown.

Your whole life, you'd done your best to isolate yourself from others. Ever since your best friend betrayed you and left without saying goodbye, you realised letting others get close only hurt you. Yet now, you've done it yourself. You've driven Oscar to this state through your own stupidity.

You grind your teeth and squeeze your eyes shut. You want nothing more than for Oriko to be here. For her to tell you what to do. To tell you everything will be alright. But she's not here. All you have left is a little shard of her soul gem and the flimsy hope that she's out there somewhere.

No, you're all alone.

Oscar was the only person in this world that you were able to trust, and now he's ended up like this. Now he's left you as well. You couldn't protect Oriko, and now you've failed to protect Oscar.

You feel something wet drip onto your leg. Plip-plop-plip-plop. It impacts your thigh like a torrent of thick raindrops. You suck in a breath and try to ignore it. You're crouching forward, so there's no way anything can drip down onto your leg. You… you just need to ignore it. Your eyes are stinging anyway, so you can't open them to check.

You hear a gasp. The sound of chainmail shifting and awkward movement.

You immediately forget your excuses and snap your eyes open. Your vision is blurry, but it doesn't matter. You suck in another shaky breath and throw yourself into a tight hug around Oscar.

"K-Kirika?" Oscar gasps, taken by surprise. His body is tense, but soon relaxes as he realises where he's woken up. He eventually rests a hand on the back of your head and strokes your hair like your mum did when you were a baby. "I'm… I'm alright, Kirika. I'm alright."

The dam breaks at his words, and you can no longer deny your tears. Your throat catches and a pathetic sobbing escapes from your mouth. Your body goes weak and your eyes run freely.

The two of you stay like this for a while. You don't know for how long exactly, but you feel strangely empty by the end of it. Your grip on Oscar eventually loosens, and he gently pulls you away and places you on the ground in front of him.

"Feeling better?"

You sniff and avert your eyes. "I… don't know." You consider the question before shaking your head. "S-Sorry…"

"It's okay to cry, Kirika." Oscar says. He reaches out and gently ruffles our hair. "Especially for someone your age. A young girl shouldn't have to go through any of this…"

You half-heartedly pull away. "I-I'm not a little kid." You murmur. Even as you say it, you can't help but feel childish.

"Alright, then." Oscar says. After a moment, he picks up the estus flask and places it near the bonfire. The embers flow into the flask, slowly refilling it. "I won't push. Just… I'm willing to listen."

You scoff. He almost died because of your stupid eagerness, and he's the one worried about you?

He's just a good and highly traumatized dude. He gets it.

Man, the Dark Souls grindset. Like, we know why the Choosen Undead wins, it's because it doesn't matter how many times they die, they can get right back up for another go and learn from every fight. Oscar is on the edge of going hollow. He can't afford to die anymore. He just might not have what it takes to kill the lords.

And where does that leave Kirika, who's grown so dependent on him? Not as a guy who swings a sword good, but as someone trustworthy that cares about her?

Sounds like a plan to me. And glad to know picking up the sword and bailing did, in fact, work out. Was half expecting the extra time delay might give Quelaag a chance for a parting shot we wouldn't want to deal with.
