A Typical High School Life Filled with Supernatural Battles

And, finally, I'm slightly annoyed at the people doomsaying about how our entire power set is combat-ineffective because we didn't take Control 3, and would like to have a victory under our belts in order to give us some confidence in ourselves, especially one so easy as this promises to be.
Oh no, that's probably false. Considering that people only had powers for a couple of days and we haven't been idle, I doubt we are all that weak. Plus, narratively we won't be put into a dangerous situation without a proper build-up.

But we could get hurt. The question that should be on our mind right now - we've seen his weapon, but what are his powers? I'd rather James maintained a cautious and observant streak, though sometimes there is no way to know but to find out first-hand.

this guy is actively going out and searching to fight to get stronger and doesn't seem to mind fighting random power users that he meets to take their power way. plus he's a delinquent and I bet sooner or later he won't mind flexing his on poor normal people if he can get away with it.
When supernaturals start messing with normal people, that's when the authorities will start to get involved, and I guess a lot of the more obvious Gifted will find themselves rounded up. Can't have something that dangerous run amok, after all. And some of them might even come willingly and start working for the goverment, because killing golems and hunting down your fellows is a lot more fun when you have a machinegun and a SWAT team at your beck and call.

If the starlight radar power could track other Gifted, I think we may see some interesting developments down the line...

Judging by this...

You then notice that they have a chain wrapped around their right arm and noticing that nearly costs you dearly when the guy thrusts his chain-wrapped arm at you and launches the chain straight at you. Hardening your paper to its fullest in moments is not an easy feat but you succeed in doing so and block the punk's attack. The punk widens at how you blocked his attack but then grins viciously.

"You're better than a golem, aren't you? That means more sparks!" The punk reasons before launching his chain at you again.

...I'm imagining that he has either metal control or a specific affinity for that chain. Using one of those as a weapon is hard, and you don't get it to launch with appreciable force with a simple arm thrust. It would just fall to the ground at your feet. You need to swing that around to build up momentum. Given his reliance on the chain I imagine that he either has a specific affinity or simply lacks the ability to make much practical use of other metal sources.

Assuming this might be dangerous, just how it would be dangerous for an enemy to assume that Lucille has affinity for a sledgehammer because of the ease she wields it with. She doesn't really, though - she can use anything, it's just that her ability eases her into swinging heavy things.

I considered that, but am deferring to Ockham.

Maybe tactile telekinesis. Magnetism. The weapon body we passed up at opening. Hell illusions for all we know. The one thing we do know is that he is willing to kill us and might be stronger than us. Considering that it seems he has been grinding his power there's a good chance he is. We shouldn't hold back, and talking seems more likely to distract us than him.

Perhaps, yes, although in either case the chain is a weird choice unless he lacks facility otherwise. And I'm not proposing holding back, but we're not optimized for direct combat against somebody holding a chain. Misdirection is our forte, and using that approach allows us the luxury of restraint.

Sure, and a chain is a typical street gang weapon which is why he either had it on him already or created it in some way.

[X] Attempt diplomacy. You're both human male of possibly the same age. Surely you can find some middle ground between the two of you to prevent a fight from breaking out.

Edit: Okay, I'm probably going to switch because it's obvious as shit this vote isn't gonna pass. I just want to ask, what's with the people considering crippling/possibly killing this guy? Neither of those things would feel really true to our protagonist.

I was originally for that before it was pointed out to me that doing so was excessive. First reactions and all that. At the moment my plan calls for blinding him with a paper mask and threatening him in order to start diplomacy from a position of strength, and withdrawing if that doesn't work. As for why others are for crippling+ force even with a moment to think...protagonist-centered morality? He attacked us, and pettily so at that, so he gets to eat sh*t?

That's what it seems like, anyway. Once somebody pointed out to me that I was going a bit far I switched, so I obviously don't have the insider perspective on the thought process.

EDIT: Also, looking back a few people have taken the "cleaning up the streets" point of view, in that if such an obvious hoodlum dies nothing of value is lost. They cite both his general behavior and the potential havoc a rogue empowered person could cause.

Question: Are we close enough to head back towards Luci - Cause if there is one thing we've learned is that sledge-girlfriend is best girlfriend.

Plus, you know, weighing the odds in our favor with help.

At first I thought we were, but the narration is vague enough that I'm mentally placing us in the meta-narrative place of, "Far enough to be beyond any immediate assistance, but not far enough so as to be close to home."

At first I thought we were literally still directly on her doorstep, though. Then I read the update again.

She's probably getting ready to sleep. Plus, giving him an idea of where she lives doesn't sound like a good idea.

I would like to repeat my misgivings about suffocating a person into unconsciousness. It's a lot easier to cause permanent brain damage doing that than people give it credit for. Even if we don't care about that, though, I don't want to see what this guy does when he's desperate and panicking. Sending that chain flying in all directions until he hits something seems like the tamest possibility, and we're in a residential area.

EDIT: And also what Nevill said in the post below. We don't need to -- in the proposed plan we have him blind with a razor to his throat! Why knock him out?

I see no point in suffocating him after we subdue him. Seems excessive and unnecessarily petty.

Uh well he is a legitimate threat to our life. Thinking that we shouldn't attack him because were better than him is in and out itself protagonist-centered morality. Especially when we don't know that were stronger.

I have trouble parsing the message you are trying to convey. Attacking him because we believe we are worse than him would make me wonder if James doesn't have a few screws loose.

If running isn't an option, I am leaning towards Prodigy's plan of (attempted) demonstration of power without life-threatening antics.

Edit: also, I don't think he expressed an explicit desire to kill us yet. To take our spark, yes, but we don't know what's involved in that.

[x] Fight! Your unnamed opponent is spoiling for a fight. Give him one with added ass-whooping. Plus you'll probably get more sparks by beating them as well.

Being passive un such a situation is, indeed, stupid.

-[x] Try to blind him with paper.
-[x] Try to cover his mouth and nose to knock him out.

Can we at least try to resolve this peacefully? I understand fighting to defend ourselves, but that should be a last resort after we've exhausted all diplomatic avenues.

He's attacking us. A non-lethal takedown is preferable to diplomacy at this point. (Like seriously, if we say "Sorry bro, didn't know you were there" and he keeps attacking, then diplo fails.)

That doesn't mean we can't try to talk him down. We've been speaking to him for all of ten seconds, we can't just assume that it's impossible to reason with him.

But it'll distract us, and while we're going for a non-lethal, non-maiming offense, we have no way of knowing if he's doing the same.
