Hiver (the author) has stated that the mana required for more powerful spells increases linearly rather than exponential. Mean that while in the game 5 mana may be enough to cast a 'wipe the board' type spell, in this fic it's nowhere near enough to do so.

Don't judge Winter's capabilities by a typical card deck. The planeswalkers you represent while playing the game would have centuries of experience and practice.
Also, aren't those summons something Hiver himself came up with?

Something Winter should have asked Dawn about her armor, what happens if someone casts an anti-magic spell or she enters an anti-magic area?

Magical protection is good, relying only on magical protection is bad.

We also have to remember that he's building his spells from scratch using what he remembers of playing Magic as a guide for things it's possible to do. He might figure out how to build a black spell which introduces tons of entropy into magic items so the enchantments in them break down, or he might figure out a blue spell which reverses the effect of a magical aura. And it doesn't particularly matter if either of those are "real cards" because his giant ravens aren't "real cards" either.

WoW armor may be more artifact than enchantment, and there's not a lot of mass anti-artifact spells in Magic. (anti-artifact? Sure, in both green and red, but far fewer that target multiple artifacts simultaneously, and those tend to be expensive.)
But the very fact that it does exist should have Winter being the genre savy person that he is continuing to insist that Dawn get some actual armor.

I would say WoW armour isn't so much enchanted as imbued with awesome power attributed to the materials and processes going into it's construction. Which you can later enchant it for a couple of extra minor effects. Inside it's own lore anyway.
Witch is the same as saying it's enchanted, All you need is a sword that can cut through magic (I'm going to use Derflinger as an example) and you can cut right through them with ease.

A lot of the Exotic materials are probably fairly durable in there own right, I agree that anti-magic would fuck most of there defenses up though. I'm not sure I'd want to try it using a sword however, can you imagine how monumentally pissed one of the murder hobos would be if someone trashed their armour?
They would think he was an Epic Encounter what with him having and using a weapon that outright no sells armor.

Derflinger isn't base on Void Magic. He's based on Spirit Magic. Sasha made him. There's a long elven tradition behind it.

"Will you stand still you over sized burger patty!" I grumbled as I tried to strap one of the large boxes onto the side of a Kodo. The potions were on large Kodo drawn carts, but we needed to store more food, which meant that the large riding animals also needed to carry gear.

Suddenly the large box was pressed firmer into the harness slot on the Kodo and I glanced out to see a black furred tauren press it in place with one hand.

"Thanks'" I said in his language and he nodded before moving on as I finished to strap it in place.

I sighed and pointed at the Kodo, "And you behave now!"

The large lizard like creature completely ignored me, started to move towards the closest patch of grass so I gave the reins a hard tug to stop it before leading it over to tie it back on the pole driven into the dirt.

Had to move it away to get room to do the loading.

"Not a word." I said, pointing at Dawn where she was feeding 'her' kodo an armful of dried grass.

She gave me an innocent look like if to say, 'What? Me?' before she grinned, "Honestly, they are not that bad."

True that... they could have been wolves, raptors or those fucking blood elf birds.

I shook my head, "You have had like three years to get used to the damn things." I grumbled, leaning against the pole they were tied to, only for 'my' kodo to headbutt my hip, causing my elbow to slip and me to fall flat on my arse.

Dawn dissolved into giggles.

Give me a horse any day. Hell, give me a Varren to ride any day. Sadly, I try not to stand out which meant keeping summoning at a minimum unless it is needed.

Not that we don't stand out anyway. There are a thousand people gathering for this caravan. More than two thirds are soldiers, guards and adventurers from different Horde species. From tauren to blood elves.

I could have summoned a Kodo, but then I would need to explain where I got the damn thing. So I was stuck with Mr Burger.

I could technically also have mind controlled it, it's mind should be easy enough to handle, but I havd no intention to dump that much blue mana into mind controlling a single pack animal.

Sighing, I struggled back onto my feet, brushing the dust from my brand new leather armor, the most expensive I could afford... not as nice as Dawn's, but functional. Just as much protection and it increases my dexterity a bit as well.

Not that it's always noticeable.

I gave the kodo a glare, "When we get where we are going, you are dinner."

That set Dawn off again so she earned a glare as well. Her kodo was eating out of her hand.

Well, isn't that just bloody perfect.

Shaking my head I looked around, things was starting to calm down a bit, "We were leaving mid day?" I asked.

She nodded with a grin, "Yes. We are leaving for Ratchet. From there everything is loaded on ships and then we cross the sea to Stranglethorn Vale."

I slowly nodded, "And then East?" as I tried to remember exactly where the portal was.

Dawn shook her head, feeding her Kodo the rest of the grass, "North. There is a mountain chain in the way. We need to loop around it, through the Vale, up through Darkshire and then east through Deadwind pass and Swamp of Sorrows. Didn't you listen when Master Cloudsong explained all this last night?"

Well, I did. But I focused more on his words than what he said... my omnitool may have figured out the language and now has a decent real time translation for me, but to be able to speak it, I need to learn it.

Which mean not relying completely on my omnitool for translation.

Besides, I knew I could always get an update from Dawn later.

"I did. Was just tired. Still, there has to be a faster way to do this." I said with a shrug, "Wish we could have taken the windriders."

Dawn shrugged, "Honestly? Me too. And if it was just us, we could. But the cargo and soldiers..."

I nodded, "Yeah, I know. But this trip will take at least three months! We might have lost by the time we get there."

She grimaced, "I asked Master Cloudsong the same thing. He said that we are just the first of several caravans and that is just from the Horde. The Alliance are sending their own forces and they are on the other continent already."

"Well, let's hope they do or we will have bigger problems." I sighed as Cloudsong rode up on his brown Kodo.

"We move now." he said... or at least that was what I thought he said. Half a second later my omnitool gave me the translation of "We are moving out."

I set it on a delay to improve the speed I learn the language at.

Dawn untied her animal and I followed her example before climbing onto my riding animal, only with much less practiced movements.

She gave the reins a tug, making her animal turn on the spot before she gave me a grin, "Well? Coming?"

I sighed and pulled on my own reins. In theory I know how to ride this thing, I've been practicing it for a week. Completely different than riding a horse.

In practice I could aim it more or less in the right direction. Most of the time.

Dawn looked amused as I managed to wrestle the lizard forward as the caravan started to form up.

Cloudsong shook his head, "Sunrise have touch for Kodo. Perhaps other animal fitting for you."

Hell no. I'm not starting over with a different species again!

"Don't worry. I go this." I said as I rode the large lizard towards our place in the middle of the caravan with the rest of the healers.

Dawn and Cloudsong stopped theirs behind a wagon full with potions supplies and I tried to do the same.

The Kodo had completely other plans.

"No! Not left you stupid animal! Stop! Stop!"

AN// Many thanks to Avalon Aurora for betaing this part.

Only if he gets the one with the drums.
The drums scare the kodo, it rampages and strikes fear into the surrounding populace, all the while Winter is desperately trying to stay on the beast, because if he falls then the kodo will trample him.
Yes, I see how that can be considered "fearsome".

Considering how much she likes them you should get Dawn to get their essence. It would be a good starting point to explaining the whole plane walker thing to her.

Why are you trying to hide the fact that you can summon things? It's probably a good idea to let them know about it since that's going to be one of your best combat abilities. Heck, I'm betting that they don't really keep that close track of all of their beasts and you could probably get away with it- or just blame translation problems when they ask :p

No one in WoW would bat an eyelash at summoning, Mages, Shamans, and Druids I believe are noted for summoning shit all the damn time, and warlocks of course.
And you did a very showy declaration of being a Mage.

Correction no one bats an eyelash at summoning elementals, and demons.

Do hunters summon shit?

What about mounts?

Not only that, but in the last story he showed a willingness to use it on lessees animals to help with his locomotion
He didnt need to mind control them, they were summons.

As for the fact that he simply don't summon a mount, or fly or use magic to the left and right...

Several reasons.

First of all, he want to stay under the radar for as long as possible and have no idea how well this place rate up against the wow he remember(and for him it was at least 15 years since he last played and he never paid that much attention to the lore at that time) so he cant throw magic around all the time without risking showing his hand so to speak. The longer he look like a normal human with some magic or healing, the easier it will be to suckerpunch the first enemy that think him a simple target.

Second...he is just kind of enjoying himself. This is the first time in ten years he is able to get away from worshipers, followers, slayers and enemies for more than a couple of days.

Hope this clear things up.

EDIT: He is also a tad arrogant at this time. He is so very used to be the most dangerous thing in the room.

Ok. Outlands. Portal opening event - go to the badlands, beat up invading demons.

Go through portal, Horde and Alliance have somehow thrown up sizeable fortresses (memory is a bit vague, haven't some of the troops been stuck there for years?), have siege weapons aimed at each other, and demons/fel orcs all over the place. Along with the natives (more orcs and dranei). Fel orc dungeons/raid in the middle of the map. Lore mostly on territory gains between the two factions, getting the locals to be friendly

Head West - Zangermarsh. Naga trying to steal all the water. If it was explained why, I don't remember it. Naga based dungeons/raid. Local friendly population are fungus men.

North. Forget name, full of ogres and dragons. Spikes menace with more spikes. Ogre base raid. Some druids doing druid things.

East - Netherstorm? Goblins and Blood Elves have set up camp here. Blood Elf based dungeons/raid. Main location for otherworldly traders, could be something useful there for Winter and Summer. Blood elves busy building giant machines to steal the local magic.

Back down south. Nagrand(spelling?) Mostly lore related stuff, with a lot of native critters to kill if you do the hunter quests. Thrall comes home, Garrosh gets turned from emo teenager into a warrior - be nice if they could do something to prevent him later going nuts with power.

East - name escapes me. Only capital city remaining in the area, Shattrah. Home to the local 'god' - they really should make time to have a chat to the glowy thing in the middle of the city. Bird men based dungeons.

East again - Shadow something? Demons, more fel orcs, Illidan's base of operations. You are not prepared, yadda yadda. Main quest line focuses on getting aid against Illidan and freeing his enemies. Oh and raiding to get Illidan's fancy knives.

I have no idea where Hiver will go with this story, just a brief very rough overview of the territory. Unlike a game player, neither Winter or Summer are likely to be doing quests of kill X of Y, so the Lore based quests are more likely to give hints of possible avenues.
The first zone is Hellfire Peninsula, and the fortress commanders on either side are both heroes from Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal. The demons are mostly around the eastern end of the zone, then the Fel Orcs in the middle with the faction forts north and south of them; the native orcs are north of the Orc fort and the Dranei/Broken are to their west. Just west of the Fel Orc-infested fortifications are a set of three contested forts that were world PVP objectives.

Zangarmarsh, the second zone, is Mushroom-ville, as in the trees are humongous mushrooms and the flight points sit on top of them. The mushroom people faction is called Sporeggar, and they live all the way to the west.

From Zangarmarsh, you can either go north to Blade's Edge Mountains, which is full of ogres, both friendly and unfriendly, or Terokkar Forest, which is where Shattrah is located. Blade's Edge Mountains, as mentioned, is full of ogres, and by the time you're through questing here you'll be king of the lot of them. It's also the location of the level 70 rep faction Ogri-La, who are smart ogres(!). From Blade's Edge, you can go to Netherstorm, which is barely holding together (it's a collection of rocks floating in space connected by bridges), and is populated by mana creatures, and more demons. Lots and lots of demons. The mentioned dungeon complex is a magical prison where the inmates have run riot.

Terokkar Forest has a huge bald spot in the middle where the ruined city of Auchindoun (which is infested by Fel Orcs) is located, and it's surrounded by ghosts, other undead, and sand worms. The forest part, in addition to the faction fortresses, has more Fel Orcs, hostile Blood Elves, and a race of bird people whose name I don't remember right now. From Terokkar you can go either west to Nagrand (through Shattrah) which is the ancestral home of the Orcs, or east to Shadowmoon Valley, which is demon (and Fel Orc) central, and which is where the actual sundering ritual took place.

What the fuck?

No seriously, a griefer? You do realize that these are real people to the SI. You're basically suggesting that he should become a murderer and a traitor to the entirety of Azeroth.

Hiver, if it's not too spoiler-y, what would the SI's main goal be while in WoW?

Is it to change the plot, for better or worse, and essentially be a role-player? Will he be more of a power gamer, whose aim is to learn magic and skills, and acquire loot and artifacts to make him stronger, with little regard in how WoW's story unfolds?

Both have advantages, but if the SI's strong enough, it might be fun to be a griefer instead: like staying in a fairly well important area and killing everyone who tries to do stuff there. Kinda like how some higher level players camp at places and kill the lower level ones to keep them from leveling up. Except it's not a game, so maybe the aim would be to keep some people from meeting certain objectives.

Or pulling of the equivalent of an Leeroy Jenkins, by provoking some large undead or demon armies in an epic agro. Let them chase you to the point where the stronger characters like Thrall, Jaina, and others would have no choice but to deal with them.

As for summons, forget subtle! Go for multiple infernal summons dropping from the sky like meteors, just like you see in the RoC cutscene. So the summons would hit like a fireball or magma attack, then rise from craters to follow your commands! :p
I think his goals are, in order of importance:
1. Protect Dawn.
2. Protect the people of Azeroth, be they humans, orcs, dwarfs or whatever.
3. Teach Dawn about her new abilities and how to defend herself. This includes getting her a at least one of every mana.
3. Maybe do some uplifting, but he isn't going to stay longer then the three years and he might think it would draw too much attention, so he might skip this.
4. Learn more about magic and get better summons/gear/artefacts.
5. Claim some additional lands, if he stays long enough in one place and Dawn doesn't want it herself.
6. Relax a bit after dealing with the politics in Westeros, his cult and uplifting them.

I have no idea why you think he (or most other people) would enjoy being a griefer.
