They were undergoing a process of Andalisation, that's the thing. Aside from religious and linguistic quirks, the Ironborn had settled right down and begun behaving a lot like the Andals which amounted to nothing when the rest of Westeros continued to snub them openly and privately.

And it wasn't the first opportunity, there was a lot of build up to what happened and it's something that would have been avoided if Malora hadn't been killed or even if the Tullys hadn't had snubbed the Storm-Cloakeds when they came over seeking a bride in the hopes of mending bridges.

They snubbed them because they were worshiping the Ironborn-equivalent to Heinrich Himmler.

Which the Ironborn found deeply offensive because they sent Sargon to the Riverlands because they thought that maybe, just maybe, given the fact that Malora was Queen and not reviled that the Riverlands might want to at least try to bury the hatchet with the Ironborn. It was a gesture of good faith that was rejected without consideration and was one of those constant reminders that no matter what the Ironborn did, they would always be hated and mistrusted on the mainland.

Look I'm not sure how many times I can say this. If you worship, and I do mean worship, a man who is infamous for slaughtering a people then the descendants of the victims are never goign to forgive you for you are lionizing the worst tragedy they have faced in living memory. Basically the day they deified Veron was the day the Riverlands solidified its hatred of the Ironborn.

Oh I'm aware, that doesn't mean the Ironborn understood it or didn't take offense.
