Qarthene Magic
Part 2

Elder Council
The house of the Undying is ruled by the Elder Council, essentially a bunch of pretty much dead warlocks, who sit around being ghostlike, being smug about magic, and drinking Shade-of-the-Evening, leaving everything else to their minions. They don't even really do magic, mostly remaining smug and condescending to all the warlocks who haven't made it to being ghosts. There are, however, a few exceptions, who don't act like magical stoners all the time. They number twelve in total. Those that actually do things bear titles, unlike their stoner brethren. However, none of them can leave Qarth, due to the fact that they are beings of pure magic sustained only by the Heart of the Undying in their sanctum. If they were ever to leave, their forms would dissipate, and they would become dust. However, if they travel with a dragon in close proximity, they can survive without being near the Heart of the Undying.

Lesser Warlocks
These are the Warlocks that aren't totally dead and turned into ghosts. There's about a couple hundred of them, but the majority don't care about the outside too much. The few that do are affiliated with one of the Factions headed by Elder Warlocks. Or are Otron Mott.

The Elder Warlock Kurigash, The Master of the Black Blade

Kurigash is an ancient warlock, once a Knight of Westeros who found Magic was a better pastime than bearing a sword. He rose in the ranks through magical learning, until he became on of the Elder Council, not through influence, but through the simple fact that he was the best magical fighter in the entire House. He wields a particular variant of Magic, found from a sect of Warlocks, in Asshai, who were warrior-mages in the twisted intrigues of the city. Few Qarthene-born warlocks used it for its uncouthness, but to Kurigash, it mattered not. Even in becoming an Elder Warlock, unlike his compatriots, he maintains the will to maintain a physical body of sorts, created of pure magical energy. Once, it was feeble, almost like an old man's, but with the arrival of a Dragon to Qarth, he gained vitality to match any warrior. He relishes combat, though he has his own code of honor and some thin veneer of loyalty to the Royalty of Qarth, though he despises the Pureborn. Killing the Thirteen was his idea.

The Magic allows him inhuman movement, flashing across rooms in moments, twisting his body in inhuman contortions, and with his status as a Elder Warlock, survive blows that would kill any man. What's already dead can't really die. Fire and concentrated Light, however, will burn him away. He is able to summon a single pitch-black sword usable by only him, that some speculate to be made of dragonglass, considering how it appears. It is about as hard and sharp as something above normal steel, yet not really Valyrian steel either, and is usable by only him, giving him his title. The blade itself is named 'Herald Midnight'. He is also a rather skilled warrior, with a very large amount of experience. Among the other abilities granted by his magic is short-ranged teleportation, the ability to turn into a single mass of shadow, and the ability to turn incorporeal.

In terms of Influence amongst the Warlocks, he leads a small group of a dozen 'lesser' warlocks like Daxos was in canon, who are masters of blade and magic, and hone their skills daily. Only recently has the head of their group had the strength to fulfill the "blade" part. They are named the SpellSteel Circle.

The Elder Warlock Quirial, The Master of the Enlightened Way
There is another Elder Warlock, who sees magic as a thing to manipulate the outside world with. Quirial is the foremost master in Qarth of the Dharmayatti Way, an ancient school of Magic that uses meditation, hand-gestures, and chants to create magical effects of light-based power. He learned it long ago from Yi-Ti Monks, and eventually mastered it over the decades. With his mastery he was able to ascend to an Elder Warlock, uniquely, by ascending to a flowing body of spiritual energy, rather than the more crude way of dying and making a ghost. Thus, compared to the others, he is serene and contemplative, an island of harmony and peace in the midst of stoners and schemers. Honestly, the reason he gets out so much is to avoid the other Warlocks. They're really bad company.

The Way relies on eight core hand gestures, combined to create various effects. All of them are based on light and ''tis manipulation, creating lasers, illusions, blades, and more. It's more esoteric abilities allow for healing, creation of area effects, and even a particularly neat skill for meditation, which allows one to go without sustenance as long as one meditates. Like Kurigash's SpellSteel school, Dharmaya contains strictures on physical combat, though there are more about unarmed combat being used in conjunction with the hand gesture, and more of an art form than a practical usage. Still, it is deadly if underestimated, and peer opponents will find it a challenge.

He leads a group of two-dozen Warlocks, that all practice the Dharmayatti Way. Arguments between them and the rest of the Warlocks on the better forms of magic are common, and his faction has few allies. However, it is also the one gaining the most influence, with the rise of interaction with the outside world. This is due to it's ideology of spreading harmony and peace, like a bunch of hippies. WHo also throw lasers at you if you don't do peace.

The Elder Warlock Yrise, the Master of Visions Unfolding
Yrise is the last of the Elder Warlocks who interact with the outside. She was originally a Qarthene Pureborn Noblewoman, who ended up falling in love with a Warlock, and followed him into the paths of Magic. How this happened, no one is sure, and she's certainly not talking. In any case, she acts as the primary teacher of Warlocks, and accepts any who would be devoted enough to the study of magic. However, the other Elder Warlocks of the councilor restrict her recruitment to almost one a decade, a fact which she resents deeply.

Yrise's magic is based on perception, turning illusions to reality, bring visions through time, and bending space. One can be walking down a hallway until her magic makes it become an infinite tunnel, or a pit, or a stairway. An arrow's flight becomes turned back towards your heart, and an impenetrable wall suddenly has a twisted hole in it. This, however, is extremely difficult to do unless one has intense familiarity with the objects and locations warped. For the most part, all of the House is familiar to her, and much of Qarth, save some secret locations, is familiar to her as well. She can also bring forth images from someone's past, so long as she can observe them, and illusions that act as if real until they are disbelieved.

She has no real faction, but a significant chunk, up to eighty, or the current lesser Warlocks owe to her thanks for teaching them the rudiments of magic. They leave her study to learn more specialized magic, but they remember her tutelage and owe her a debt for it.

It is not propaganda but a simple fact. Pentos is a second-rate power and does not have the military might to take on Qohor or Volantis, let alone both, together. It was Braavosi ships that covered your ass and Braavosi backing that have kept your head above water - just barely - in these recent conflicts. Braavos wants peace which means you are a fool to insist on war, a war which you would lose terribly without Braavosi - you guessed it - backing.

Pentos Event
The bells in several septs begin ringing throughout Pentos, not just in the city but in several of the unoccupied towns. It leaves many, including any Braavosi, wondering what that is for. Some just assume it is because most of the soldiers fighting in Lorath have returned. Of those returning wounded, they are immediately demobilized. While those fit for battle are sent to the field army, while those unable to serve active duty are sent to bolster the city watch.

The navy is instructed to reposition itself. As it seems Prince Duncan, his advisors and the Vale leadership have determined a better use for their ships.

PRAYER AND BLESSINGS
275 A.C.

The Order of the Blessed Women, otherwise known as the Sybillines or Marcher Maids was established by the decree and authority of the Dowager Princess of Dorne, raised at the same time by the High Septon's direct appointment to the highest council of the Faith of the Seven as the Most Devout. Six times married and known popularly as the Red Viper of Dorne, she had been born Sybilla Dondarrion and risen to prominence as the wife and eventual successor of a Vulture King in the Red Mountains. Bandit, smuggler, murderess, schemer and plotter extraordinaire, marriage to Ser Ulrick Dayne had shrouded her in respectability and even something approaching virtue...connected though they were, by her prior marriages to his grandfather and brother. Infamy and intrigue were never far from her, of course, and she would see her shining knight to the Princely rule of Dorne and the royal council in King's Landing before his days were over.

And then...the Faith. It had been widely expected that the Dowager Princess would continue governing Dorne alone, exercising government in the name of her step-son, Prince Gatwick. The said Gatwick had long been absent from Dorne, standing constant vigil at the side of the young King and offering fraternal counsel and guidance whenever possible. He had been a man grown by the time she wed his father, but mutual interest and ambition was glue enough for any alliance going forward, an alliance thought likely to promote Gatwick until he sat the Iron Throne as Hand of the King and assure Sybilla's autocratic reign in Dorne until the end of her days. Instead she had taken holy vows, founded a religious order and dedicated her life to charitable giving and other forms of holy work.

It was, to say the least, stupefying to friend and foe alike.

A Sybilline Sister, c.275AC

*
The Red Viper was neither a foolish woman nor a fanatic. Whatever abstract belief she had in the Seven-Who-Are-One and the Seven-Pointed Star was entirely attenuated by her own passionate nature, the boundless hunger for power, influence and security that had driven her and kept her alive through abductions, beatings and a thousand other attacks and depredations in her early years. It was not prayers and blessings that made her enter the Faith - far from it, in fact. It was the same impulses that had always driven her, that always would drive her.

The Prince of Dorne was the first to endow the new order with holdings. He granted them the half-rule of Marchtown, a well fortified trade post and waystation constructed on the very border of Dorne and the Stormlands. No doubt both expected her Dondarrion kin to grant her the Dondarrion half-share of the place also. There was coin to be had there from merchants passing to and fro, and her years as a smuggler and bandit queen in those parts meant she had no lack of friends and associates spread out throughout the Marches. Her high birth and royal connections encouraged lesser families to send her their daughters, and gave her ready access to the orphanages of Dorne and Stormlands both. The septries of Dorne did not tarry in beginning to adopt her rule, even those where there were only male godsworn, and before the year was out the Most Devout Mother (as the Red Viper was now styled) was already prospecting the expansion of her order beyond her home realms.

THE PRINCESS OF DORNE
275 A.C.

The Princess Aelinor of Dorne took to primacy like a duck to water. Seven knew she had been awaiting her moment in the sun for a decade and more. Continuing the proud family tradition of upsetting the expectations and predictions of their fellow Westerosi, she was named Regent of the Principality of Dorne and the Kingdom of Nymerios in the 275th year of Aegon's Conquest, at the bright young age of twenty-two. Besides the remarkable breadth of executive power and authority entrusted her, the appointment was noteworthy in that it passed over three adult brothers, two capable uncles and one remarkable aunt known as Lady Nine-Tails.

Those of her kin who expected to dominate and play her with any ease were in for sore disappointment.

Having received the homage of the Dornish court at Sunspear, she made a quick progress west and sailed up the Greenblood. She made straight for Skyreach, one of the chief strongholds of western Dorne and the preferred prison and safe house of the Daynes. Prince Gatwick had resided there at the start of his second marriage, his deaf new wife preferring preferring a quiet life in the country to the ogling eyes and careful scrutiny of a Princely court. The Lady Visenya Tully had never known any life but that which she had enjoyed at Summerhall; Skyreach was conveniently nearby and similar in its uneventful tranquillity. Her new husband had only been too happy to accommodate her wishes. She was one year Aelinor's junior, and like her already a mother. Now she was pregnant for the second time. The daughter of a legitimised mother, granddaughter of a whore, herself tainted and deformed, she was nevertheless a dragon-rider and one of the three linchpins of Dornish interest and attachment to the great realm (Prince Aeryn Targaryen and the marriage alliance with House Reyne were the two others).

Ensconced in the foothills of the eastern Red Mountains and famed for its sky-scraping towers, Skyreach had been a fief of House Dayne for over a century. The arms of its ancient Kings, the King of Stone and Sky of House Fowler, were proudly quartered in the Dayne coat of arms, and faint drops of Fowler blood still lingered in Dayne veins, but it was only fairly recently that the Daynes had began paying it any great attention. Far from the sea and highly defensible, it housed prisoners, wards and valuables in the dangerous days following the War of Five Crowns (known in Dorne as the Third Dance). Visenya Tully followed the foosteps of Martells and her own Targaryen cousin Aeryn when she took residence there and became yet another stranger taken under House Dayne's wing. She was joined by a makeshift court of her own, primarily composed of her Seadragon cousins, who were able to sign on account of their own deaf sister and thus keep her meaningful company.

How much the said cousins enjoyed this life was anyone's guess, of course.

The scene Aelinor encountered upon arrival certainly testified to a....complex situation. Visenya Tully had been delivered of twins before her arrival, a boy and a girl. The boy was normal and perfectly formed, but the girl bore the taint as cruelly as her mother, with pronounced physical deformities and legs that would never walk. Zhaebeterrys Seadragon, herself lame, deaf and tainted, had snatched the baby and cradled it fiercely in the corner of the room, crying copious tears and refusing every attempt to make her part with the infant, who mewled and writhed as much as its weakened and twisted body permitted it to. Aelinor could not readily discern for how long this had been going on, the unstable girl indulging in her wretched charade while the babe grew weaker, the Maester fretted anxiously, her siblings quarrelled among themselves, with the servants and with her, signing furiously, protesting, even crying in one instance. Only her brother stood aloof, sitting quietly by the window-sill while the drama played out, his eyes studying Aelinor and Aeryn carefully as they made their entrance.

Princess Aelinor did not know the Seadragons personally, but she knew their story. Motherless orphans from a young age, passed from place to place, person to person, born of mad blood and often indulged and spoiled by the adults around them. Her arrival and barked orders not having sufficed to restore order to the situation, she commanded the crying girl out of the room with her twin, then marched upon the deaf girl and gazed right into her bewildered, bloodshot eyes. When compliance was not forthcoming, she gathered all the strength she had to muster and gave the girl a hearty slap across the face, stunning her long enough to take back the babe and hand it to the Maester. She felt the burden of every eye in the room suddenly fall upon her, mouths agape, anger boiling to the surface, but when she turned it was not her husband's visage that caught her eye, but that of another, his kinsman but unlike him in appearance, stunned perhaps, but...intrigued, impressed even, rising slowly in perfect silence from the window-sill.

She turned on her heel and stormed out before Maelyra could break through the arms restraining her. So much for introductions.

The Sunburst Throne

ELEMENTS & EVENTS OF INTERNAL NOTE:
  • Military arsenals in the Daynemark, Lion's Den and Sunspear produce gunpowder, cannon, guns, revolvers, and the like. The Dragonbane Manual with the technological research and developments of House Lannister provides the base for House Dayne's own developing military tradition and technology in this new age of gunpowder.
  • Silver, iron and tin mines in the Red Mountains provide a welcome source of revenue, especially in war time, especially with the rival iron and tin source of the Iron Isles conveniently unavailable.
  • The acquired Shipyards permit House Dayne to build 8 carracks or 40 galleys a year. Thanks to House Tully and the Summer Islander branch of House Dayne building caravels, galleasses, leopard and swan ships are also possibilities.
  • The genius architect Vorian Manwoody is named Master of Works and extended the patronage and favour of House Dayne.
  • Lessons learnt in the Daynemark over the last century and from the Poese during more recent times are applied to improving the administration and bureaucracy of Dorne, including the collection of taxes and customs, the lessening of the tax burden where appropriate or necessary, the remission or re-negotiation on mutually favourable terms of long-standing debts owed the crown, the conservation and restoration of canals and waterways, official oversight to ensure precious local resources (notably animal, food, tree stock) are not exhausted, and a dozen other measures in a similar vein.
  • The restoration of peace allows trade and contact to flourish between Dorne and Garinstowne, the center and base of Dornish settlement in the lands it claims beyond the sea. With stone walls and a permanent port, and other daughter colonies began up the coast, the place benefited immensely from Arianna Martell's seven year residence there, during which time she ruled as Queen and used the resources of Dorne to embellish and improve her present surroundings.

Royal Palace, Pentos

Prince Duncan and Princess Tara were having a walk through the grounds of their palace. The tree's and flowers were all in bloom, the sight was a sanctuary away from the war. This, however, was not a simple walk through the garden, but was a meeting of sorts amongst the more senior royals. Joining them were Duncan's sister, Princess Gwenys, and her husband Ser Malcolm. Rounding out the group were Magister Andros Monatis, of the junior branch of the House of Monatis, Septa Tessa, Duncan's aunt, and Septon Tom, who was a friend to Duncan's father. The group walked to were several large trees provided shade, and chairs had already been set for them.

Ser Malcolm Waynwood, with Prince Duncan of Pentos and of Andalos

"I brought you all here as there are important things to discuss, and I would rather hear the opinions of those present, than those of my advisors." As Duncan spoke, he looked at each person who was there. His wife smiled at him to show her support, as she knew most of what he had to say.

"Does this have to do with the ringing of the bells the other day?" asked Septon Tom. "I asked around, but most septons did not know why they were told to ring them."

"Yes" began Duncan, "this is because of several reasons". He walked a few paces, the others had taken their seats. "Officially, this was done to welcome back the men who fought in Lorath. However, the actual reason is that I have concluded several separate agreements."

This got the attention of the others. "Agreements, you say, go on." spoke Andros.

"Despite what you all might have heard of the recent meeting in Braavos, Malcolm managed to secure an arrangement with the Summer Isles." he looked at Malcolm, who nodded at him. "They will contribute several ships to our cause, unofficially. They also agreed to supply our city with rations to prevent starvation amongst our people." Those who did not know the news smiled at that. "There is another news, which only my wife knows. I have sent out peace feelers to some of our enemies. Some responded, and for those reasons, I commanded the bells be rung."

"I see, tell us what was the outcome" responded Septon Tom.

"I have secured a secret agreement with Tyrosh. While just today, I have word that another of our enemies have agreed to cease their part in the conflict with us."

The others were silent, until Septon Tom spoke, "this is good news, certainly something to celebrate". Septa Tessa nodded in agreement.

"Considering we did not this, I am assuming none of our allies do?" asked Malcolm.

"The Arryns know, but we have yet to tell the others. I suppose you both could inform your superiors" he looked at both his aunt and Septon Tom, who nodded their approval.

Tara, Princess of Pentos and of Andalos

"Then, this is why you had our ships withdraw to our coast." Tara spoke.

"Yes, and I intend to withdraw all of them, Volantis is less of a threat to Pentos. We shall focus our strength against our strongest enemies." Duncan then took a seat. "I think one further offensive should be enough to secure a favorable treaty. We shall come out of this war as an independent land again." All the others either smile, or nodded again in approval.

The Second Pentos-Freehold War-275
(Okay, due to my business I've been working with Wade Garrett to finish up the warplans. The results are not fully written up yet but I promised you results tonight and I aim to deliver with these bullet points. Casualties and more detailed descriptions will hopefully be up sometime tomorrow.)

Pentos:
The war ground on in Essos, the forces of the Freehold in their camps facing the soldiers of Pentos and the Vale behind their fortifications, a campaign of stagnation and stalemate, with little glory to be found. Even the Freehold's Dothraki auxilia seemed dispirited as they burning and bleeding what little they could find in lands already picked clean by two years of fighting in an attempt to draw the enemy out from behind their defenses.

For their part, the Valemen and Pentoshi held their ground, despite the growing discontent among the knightly contingent with all this sitting.

Gareth Monapis was able to prevail upon his allies to lead a sortie of the light cavalry, promising to avoid a pitched battle and prey upon the Qohorik and Norvoshi supply lines, with Lord Waynewood of the Vale and two hundred odd Faith Militant present joining his task force attaching themselves to his horse as they rode forth.

It was a promise he would fail to keep. With the Freeholders expending every effort to draw their enemies out, the little column soon found itself encircled, Qohorik cavalry and Myrwater longstriders cutting off their retreat as sellswords and Dothraki struck from the front. Only the efforts of the Faith's wyvern riders prevented a complete massacre, Brother Harek and Sister Sabetha landing in the midst of the enemy formation and enabling Gareth and a scant few survivors to retreat back to the Alliance lines, a feat that would cost Harek and his wyvern their lives, with the warrior septon's skull nailed to a Qohorik battle standard alongside Lord Malcolm's.

-Pentoshi and Faith Militant attempt to dispatch a raiding force into the hills of Andalos. They fare...poorly.

The massacre lifted spirits in the northern Freehold camps, mockery thrown upon the Pentoshi dogs in almost every tongue in the Known World, as the troops of five Free Cities and their sellswords toasted their success. Considering the diversity of their various contingents and the revelry, it was perhaps understandable that no one paid too much attention to a group of silvery haired man and women quietly making their way towards the Myrwater tents....until the massive fireball turned midnight into a green tinted midday.

The saboteurs efforts sent the Freehold's stockpile of wildfire and a great number of alchemists into R'hllors arms much sooner than expected, and played merry Hell with the timetable for assaulting the forts, with their commanders having planned to make good use of the Substance in cracking open the annoyingly resilient hill forts. (@Wade Garrett)

Frustrated but not defeated, the Freehold turned its full fury on the front line, mounting concentrated assaults on the fort line in multiple places, taking advantage of the Alliance's having to guard the whole perimeter to negate their superior numbers. Several breaches have been made and Pentos now lies open but a siege is not yet possible due to a few enemy redoubts still standing and tying down the armies of the Freehold through raids and artillery fire.

In the wake of these defeats, despite Alliance efforts to maintain order in Pentos, anti-Alliance sentiment continues to be a major concern, albiet one that is under control for now with troops on every corner. There is a fearing fear about Pentos's best that attacks on Pentos itself could cause riots.

Causalities:
-20% Freehold Losses
-25% Alliance Losses

Braavos:

Braavos had known it would eventually be on the front lines of the war. And this year proved them right. A Dothraki and Qohorik force blazed north north from the battles of Pentos to raid Braavosi land. Opposing them was a small force of 500 Hillrunners, outnumbered by the enemy 8:1. They fought bravely, using the terrain to good effect and inflicting far more casualties than they had any right to but eventually they were forces to flee to Braavos and the countryside burned.

The most terrible blow came from above as two wyverns landed next to the Braavosi aqueduct, placed dragonpowder charges, and detonated from a safe distance. The damage to the aqueduct itself was not great due tot he limited engineering skills of the riders and their limited amount of charges and once the garrison sallied out quick repairs were made. Still the fact something so vital to Braavos could be attacked shook the hearts of many in the city and the desire for peace grew.

Causalities:
-20% Freehold Losses
-40% Alliance Losses

Narrow/Summer Sea:

The Freehold's push into the Stepstones soon becomes an exercise in teeth grinding frustration, as Lysenni and Tyroshi ships and captains straggle, dawdle, and delay every attempt to launch a coordinated offensive, all the while Summer Islands and Pentoshi privateers prey on Volantine and Myrish shipping.

After a final furious wrangle with their allies, Volantis' fleet sails into the Stepstones alone, seeking a reckoning with the Braavosi trash and their alloes...only to discover the islands all but abandoned, with the Sealord's fleet having withdrawn to Pentoshi anchorage. (@Wade Garrett)
All further actions end in failure on both sides as none are willing to risk destruction by larger enemy fleets.

In the meantime, intense pressure is being put on Tyrosh and Lys to strengthen their commitment to the Freehold due tot he presence of the Volantaene Navy. Unrest is growing in these cities many suspect cowardice or worse in their leaders.

Shivering Sea:

Seeking to widen the war, the Pentosi and Faith Militant opted to mount coastal raids on the shores of Norvos and Qohor. Regrettablly these raids were not effective for long. Norvosi reserves were quickly rushed to the coast to interfere with the attacks and the Qohorik navy outnumbered the raiding force and they fled back to Lorath to save themselves from possible annihilation.

Dothraki:

Coming out of the Dothraki was a great horde of Free Dothraki. They tore through the eastern colonies of Qohor with unbridled fury and laid low all before them. While the Iron Company held the major communities, the countryside has been laid waste and food shortages are rampant as more khalasars turn west.

Mood:

While rumors about Westrosi intervention are common, morale amongst the Alliance forces is declining in the midst of recent defeats and some wonder if the war can be won. The opposite effect is had on the Freehold and the Senate is now confident victory is possible. However the losses from previous years are a growing concern and more men must be had.
