A Play of Blood and Shot

While Braavos struggles and fails to protect her own people as her countryside burns, it appears the Sea Lord has taken up a new hobby. He now dreams up a world in which they might win this war one in which our armies are defeated and his own lands aren't undefended and suffering terribly.

I must say I am surprised I'm even replying to his laughable missive, but here I am. I previously gave a generous offer even if there was sadly extenuating consequences that harmed its delivery.

Now regardless of previous misgivings and miss communications, Don't be confused I made my intent clear and it has not changed.

Until such a time as the Sea Lord reconnects with reality, please advise him to refrain from these messages and save us all some time.

Of course if you would like to end the death of your people and the missery you could always accept my offer instead.

I offer.
  • The leadership of Pentos surrender themselves for trial for their treason
  • Pentos and Braavos pay recompense for their crimes
  • The Sea Lord of Braavos surrenders himself to the Senate for Trial for his crimes against Essos.
  • The puppet government in Lorath surrenders themselves for trial for their treason.

We shall pay the traditional ransom for Lord Waynwood's safe return.

Lord Waynwood unfortunately perished on the battlefield. As the Waynwood's have not been declared Perdita his remains will be returned to Westeros at the conclusion of hostilities.

While we do not think there is a need for the ministers of Lorath or you to be tried for treason, and both would ultimately be exonerated if there was, we agree that that the Prince and his generals must see a trial.

We see, we are most disappointed in this turn of events but are hopeful that you will see sense in time.

The Sunburst Throne

ELEMENTS & EVENTS OF INTERNAL NOTE:
  • Military arsenals in the Daynemark, Lion's Den and Sunspear produce gunpowder, cannon, guns, revolvers, and the like. The Dragonbane Manual with the technological research and developments of House Lannister provides the base for House Dayne's own developing military tradition and technology in this new age of gunpowder.
  • Silver, iron and tin mines in the Red Mountains provide a welcome source of revenue, especially in war time, especially with the rival iron and tin source of the Iron Isles conveniently unavailable.
  • The acquired Shipyards permit House Dayne to build 8 carracks or 40 galleys a year. Thanks to House Tully and the Summer Islander branch of House Dayne building caravels, galleasses, leopard and swan ships are also possibilities.
  • The genius architect Vorian Manwoody is named Master of Works and extended the patronage and favour of House Dayne.
  • Lessons learnt in the Daynemark over the last century and from the Poese during more recent times are applied to improving the administration and bureaucracy of Dorne, including the collection of taxes and customs, the lessening of the tax burden where appropriate or necessary, the remission or re-negotiation on mutually favourable terms of long-standing debts owed the crown, the conservation and restoration of canals and waterways, official oversight to ensure precious local resources (notably animal, food, tree stock) are not exhausted, and a dozen other measures in a similar vein.
  • The restoration of peace allows trade and contact to flourish between Dorne and Garinstowne, the center and base of Dornish settlement in the lands it claims beyond the sea. With stone walls and a permanent port, and other daughter colonies began up the coast, the place benefited immensely from Arianna Martell's seven year residence there, during which time she ruled as Queen and used the resources of Dorne to embellish and improve her present surroundings.

  • The Riverlands possess fertile soil for growing varieties of grain as well a limited production of grapes for winemaking. Furthermore, the rivers themselves provide an ideal means for transporting them throughout the Riverlands and beyond, especially since the canal allows smaller vessels to travel from one end of Westeros to the other. Unfortunately, given the land's central location, the Riverlands's economy is easily disrupted during times of war.
  • The Riverlands now has numerous obligations and it will be difficult to uphold them and maintain a balanced treasury.

I believe we had specific agreement regarding no fighting in the Stepstones. You can win this war by knocking out the maritime might of the Braavosi and their allies in the Narrow Sea, in Tyrosh and Pentos and even in the northern reaches by Braavos itself.

Such was our intent to avoid bringing the war to the Stepstones however Braavos was the one who engaged our forces there. We intended to end the struggle quickly however it was the intervention of Braavos into our internal affairs that brought a disruption to your commerce. Then the men of the Vale entered and sought to lengthen the war further. This war will end soon and the Freehold will be victorious however it was not Volantis that brought the war Prince Gatwick.

As High Triarch of Volantis I have a duty to maintain trade between our peoples and beyond. We hope that you understand the complexity of the situation and that the Freehold is not to blame for the escalation and disruption of trade. Rather it is Braavos that is at fault.

The terms that Braavos suggests are humiliating and from a power that is negotiating either for or separately from its allies. Either way it speaks to a reality that Pentos has become a pawn of Braavos. If we are to prevent this problem in the future we must capture the city of Pentos and break the will of Braavos. We do not agree with the heavy terms that Qohor suggests as we wish to present a view that a majority of the Freehold can support. The terms we ask the Senate to level against Braavos and Pentos are such:

-Pentos fully surrenders to the Freehold
-The ruling family of Pentos will abdicate the throne and be replaced by an individual or family of the Emperor's choosing
-Braavos will be forbidden from influencing aspects of the Freehold
-Braavosi military vessels will not be permitted to passing below the northern border of Pentos or approaching the shores of Norvos and Lorath
-Braavosi trade deals with individual member states will be broken as Braavos has shown itself to be against the interests of the Freehold
-All prisoners will be exchanged and trade relations normalized
-Pentos will pay an reconstruction fee to Lorath as apology for the destruction caused
-Lorath will be temporarily occupied by a Freehold force while proper reconstruction and order can be established

We understand, however, we would note or suggest that the eastern Stepstones and indeed the Braavosi puppets in Tyrosh are far more relevant and strategic to your war, whether it be in terms of pressuring or outright capturing and attacking. Westeros as a whole is desirous of an equitable peace, a "middle way", so to speak, but if war and conflict come our way the knights and high lords are known to be prickly about their honour, pride, prestige, and so on, especially when it comes to Essosi foreigners. It would also be expedient for you to seek some understanding with King Orys, if at all possible. Gold, trade and technology have been known to influence even the most prickly monarchs.

I write this to you as leader to leader. The conflict that has been raging in Pentos has disrupted trade and commerce for all of us. This whole debacle began when Pentos funded and supported a coup in a fellow Freehold city. The Freehold demanded justice to which the Pentoshi shuttered in and prepared for war. The matter would have been closed had it not been for the Braavosi, who brought their warships into the Stepstones, breaking trade lines between our people.

As leader of the First Daughter I understand the need for trade just as you do. The Freehold will not accept Pentos to attain independence but perhaps we can come to an understanding, man to man. Such an understanding would prevent further bloodshed and breaking of trade.

We can end this war now. We have broken their defenses around Pentos and can soon march on the city. We are still presented with a problem in the form of the enemy cavalry. Your longstriders can tear through cavalry and ambush packs of soldiers and their horses. If you can commit a heavy amount of these forces we will carve a path through them. We also resuggest our plan to bomb Pentos using wyverns. Given the openings we have carved in their defense there will be little to stand in the way of these flights. Our own wyverns would of course join yours.

We applaud your calmer heads and your willingness to come to a mutually profitable understanding. According to the terms of the Grand Alliance I must reluctantly endorse Pentos' bid for independence, and I wonder if we could come to an understanding of our own regarding a settlement that includes that?

You will have all our forces but an aerial assault is out of the question.

Unfortunately the Senate of the Freehold is unwilling to compromise in this regard. Pentos was a member of the Freehold and will continue to be a part of the Freehold. Had it not sponsored a coup in another Freehold state and refused all manner of diplomacy rather than immediately arming itself for war the Senate would be more willing to compromise.

When Dorne rebelled against the Iron Throne the Freehold elected to stay out of your conflict and not interfere with your internal matters. While the Iron Throne has not thrown its military into the conflict some of your vassals have. I want to avoid a war between our people however certain interests are preventing that from happening. If you used your power to put pressure on Braavos the likelihood a more amiable peace increases. We would also request that you insist on the withdrawal of the Valemen from the conflict.

We are willing to help facilitate their safe transport back to Westeros as well as hand over any prisoners we are holding. I have been insistent that your shipping not be harmed as a sign of good faith and a true showing of my intent that I do not desire war. I am also willing to allow Westerosi merchants back into their positions in Volantis and other cities without charge.

QARTH
276 AL

Qarthene Merchants, seeking ever greater profits, found the harbor town of Qartol, on an island between the Qarthene Mainland and Greater Moraq. It is flooded by traders who seek to buy Qarthene goods and passes through the straights: Without dealing with Merchant Politics. Ruled by a council of Merchants who answer directly to Qarth, it is expected to grow incredibly quickly due to the increased trade capacity available, and the high demand for Qarthene goods. Another small jewel in Qarth's crown.

The Council of Golden Lords

In the place of the Thirteen, a new council of Merchants arises. Loosely connected, they are all heads of various Merchant Brotherhoods, all united to protecting Qarthene trade supremacy and wealth. Though they compete with each other, they begin to form a policy against outside intrusion into their hold on the spice market. The three great powers with the most sway, are the Tourmaline Brotherhood, the Most Ancient Guild of Spicers, and the Order of Sun and Moon, a newcomer to the stage.

The Tourmaline Brotherhood bring the knowledge of ancient raiding and pirating techniques and connections, the Spicers bring their mass connections to markets across the known world, and the Order of Sun and Moon provide a prominent connection to the Pureborn inner circles, one that allows them greater capability to at least negotiate with the Pureborn.

The Second Pentos-Freehold War-276
The Second Pentos-Freehold War-276
Pentos:
As winter begins, the Freehold ends the salients in the siege line with vicious assaults on the remaining hill forts and begins its final advance on Pentos. As the Freehold approached, civil unrest in the city began to boil over and it became clear that unless the Freehold was repelled once and for all the city would riot and the Freehold would prevail. As such the armies of the Alliance were forced to meet the Freehold in an all-or-nothing battle outside the walls of Pentos. A battle they had sought to avoid despite their numbers as it limited the effectiveness of their artillery. Similarly the various trenches and dugouts weakened the Alliance's cavalry advantage as the Freehold made good use of the defensive works. As so the battle began as the Alliance attacked the armies of the Freehold. What seemed to be a lucky break occurred early in the fight as General Dalteris was wounded but the High Triarch ably took his place and his dragons with a wyvern escort mounted raids on the flanks and rear of the Alliance. Prince, Dunce, Jon Waynwood, and even the Face of the Father were all wounded as the wyverns struck from above. But in the end one thing was was clear, the Freehold was outnumbered, exhausted and while they were not as effective as they could have been the Vale cavalry and Braavosi guns hammered the enemy line. In a disturbing note, the Myrwater Longstriders met their match as the armored horses of the Vale proved to be much harder to eat than the Braavosi light cavalry their kin had had in Southryos and they were routed. And the rest of the army followed them. Pentos, as horrible as it was realize had outlasted them. The High Triarch attempted to snatch victory from defeat by inciting riots with an air raid but the four wyverns sent were quickly spotted and shot down. As the High Triarch and his generals considered their next move, horrifying news reached them. The Dothraki had invaded the Freehold.

Freehold: 30% Losses
Alliance: 30% Losses

Dothraki:
Sensing the Freehold's weakness the Dothraki have struck the Freehold in force, pillaging eastern Volantis and southern Qohor. Only the cities themselves are safe as the countryside is laid waste by the renewed hordes before as they return east. As they do so Volantis's Dothraki auxiliaries desert join the hordes, seeing them as stronger than the Freehold. In the wake of this destruction the Faith in the East has been made a scapegoat for the recent disasters as is being persecuted throughout the Freehold and the Senate acknowledges peace must be made with the Alliance and even secession may have to be tolerated for a time to preserve the Freehold. The Emperor has assumed full responsibility for the recent disasters and plans to abdicate once a constitution is written. It is believed the High Triarch will be asked by the Constitutionalists to take up the Emperor's position.

Alliance:
Though pleased to finally achieve a firm victory around Pentos, the Valelords are growing restless and seek to return home as fast as possible due to news of the hill men finally beginning to raid their lands again and similar tensions are brewing through the Alliance as Pentos and Braavos yearn for peaceful days hope for a treaty to be made soon. To the surprise of many, some of the loudest voices for peace are coming from the Summer Islands as its recent raids on Volantaene shipping have cut off the Summer Islands from its most lucrative markets, especially as the trade with Westeros dries up with the approach of winter. This combined with the anger of many princes over the treaty with Po has led a coalition of princes to memorialize the throne to demand peace with the Freehold and an end to the naval agreement.

With luck, these events will lead to the end of the war. But what comes next remains to be seen.
