Voting is open
Vote Closed + Rolls
Alright, I'm going to close the vote here. While Learning to Swim is one of the winning votes, the other vote is tied between catching a 4th Pokemon and exploring nonconventional locations. As such, that's going to be decided by me, mostly as I have fun ideas in regards to it. As such, exploring nonconventional locations wins. You'll get a choice of a few such places to explore in this upcoming update.

Additionally, I'm debating having 1 action per week chosen by Violet herself. Just to be able to set the pace, as well as cover topics that I find interesting. It's early thoughts atm, but I'd appreciate if people shared their thoughts on it.

  • [X] Learn to Swim - While you do know how to swim, there is a notable difference between swimming for fun and scuba diving. And an even greater difference when it comes to exploring underwater caves. Dratini would have fun teaching you.
[X] Catch a fourth Pokemon - Catching a Magnemite or other electric-type Pokemon is why you came here, there are almost certainly good options present.
[X] Explore Unorthodox Locations - Exploring parts of the area most people don't will be an interesting experience. Pineco would very much enjoy hiking in the mountains.
[X] Call up your parents - Your parents would appreciate a call to congratulate you on your first gym badge.
[X] See the sights in the Area - While the attractions are limited to the Power Plant, exploring its interior would be rather fun. Chansey would appreciate the more scenic tour. Wait, why are you two here?!
[X] Call Tetsuya - An old childhood friend of yours, the two of you drifted off recently. He recently arrived in Pewter City and just barely managed to earn the Boulder Badge.

So long as they're not majorly altering to our journey like catching a Pokemon or something I'd be happy with this.

I assume this is borne out from the recent update where the votes were restricted to only one option, with the other going to Violet deciding to start the Cerulean Gym Challenge, and the next week finishing it? I found it to be a nice change of pace.

As such:
Would this be replacing one of the voting choices, or would it become an additional one that Violet chooses from the list?

I would alternatively propose restricting voting options, like you had in those updates.
Say for instance after arriving to a new location blocking off the travel section with "Violet wants to see the sights in this area" or "Violet's Team isn't in the mood to move on just yet", or just not including that voting set.

I think having setups where one week there is a requirement to do a certain action, or blocking off a set of actions, could shake things up, but I also anticipate that things will stabilize shortly.

Yep, as it is I'd limit it to things like talking to others or exploring certain areas where you are. In some cases it'll be challenging the gym leader or just local experienced trainers. Catching more Pokemon though is something that won't be a locked in vote. Similarly with travelling to other locations.

Pretty much my reasoning for it, I felt like those updates were a bit better paced. And it'd replace one of the voting choices. And that's a good suggestion for the travel section, I'll likely implement that in.

wrt pacing, do you have your worldbuilding set for how the gym challenge works? year-round, or is there a 'gym season' similar to the Galar Region, or theoretically how the anime works, where trainers are trying to get badges by a set date?

I know that might make things feel like they're on a timer or more rushed, but I figure I should ask since pacing is something you're considering (though just for singular updates and how it fits a current arc I assume?)

I would tentatively also offer, though it would be more writing:
A third option during weeks where Violet remains put in the same area

So essentially so long as Violet is staying somewhere stably, she isn't spending as much time focused on traveling to one area or another.
On some level, I assume having a bike or similar 'fast travel' would change the action economy instead.
I do like the setup you have so far, but I will admit that the two actions a week can definitely can make things feel more competitive.

I could probably find this out by rereading, but is Violet using a phone, pokegear, or some other setup for how she's finding out about Testuya and Willow's progress respectively? I assume it's her knowledge rather than meta info.
Social Actions (For socials, it's assumed you keep up a basic level of contact through text, choosing a social means I write it up)
ohhhh I see now.

Would it be good to change up that voting option?
Rather than it being "an entire action for this week is dedicated to calling (1) and only (1) person"...
Would it be possible to have it be that whenever [ Call ] is picked, it's "pick two people to call"?
This again might be more writing, but it might make it more viable in the action economy, especially if Violet is to meet other characters she could keep in touch with beyond the established ones. I noticed Luna isn't on the list. idk if info was exchanged or it's just not been long enough time for Violet to reach out in-character-ly.

Otherwise probably my bigger suggestion:
Cap the team at 4 until after the 3rd gym badge

This isn't a serious suggestion, but the cast so far is Violet & 3 Friends, and this will increase to 4 friends.
In pokemon fics a lot of the time folks don't go crazy with expanded teams because party members need time to shine now and again, and even anipoke struggled with this in the first gen and unova alike from what I'd heard, tho iirc Ash switched up his party regular in Unova.
Party planning didn't go too heavily past what we have now and a Magnemite, as the other two slots rounded off to being 'flex slots'.
Unless meta-contextually we the voters are intending to catch a 5th or 6th pokemon with intent to trade (this might be the best way to get a gligar for instance- oh wait right there's also the safari zone maybe?) it probably wouldn't be all that useful to have another team member so early on in the narrative.

I don't think we'll be going wild looking for party members past the 4th for a minute anyway, but I think the cooldowns used were a good measure (and I would overall suggest it be 2 or so weeks after a party member is caught from here on out for pacing reasons otherwise).
A part of this is when I did skim prior updates, and I will also say I adore this about this Quest, is that there's usually a whole series of options to vote from. I appreciate when it's more free-form journey-time like this that it's line item rather than plan voting, but I do also want to acknowledge that for some of the updates there's gonna be a lot of options.

EDIT:
"Violet," her mom greeted simply, "do you have everything you need for camp? I can bring more supplies if you're running low."
I do wanna say, as much as I could fault Violet's parents for the distant relationship, they are pretty adorable and sweet in how they are trying to be better parents. Her mom's just going "I will drive through the tokyo freeway over to the national park you're backpacking through to drop off food if you're running out" like lady, that's so sweet, but it's a relatively urbanized region with an official and stable gym circuit, she'll probably be fine most of the time.
(the rain, maybe not as much, but it's only a subpar roll... which Dratini'll probably actually enjoy anyway)

For gym challenges, they're open year round, but the actual championship tournaments and such happen on a set schedule annually. So those are the ones that generally gatekeep part of your journey. That being said, some gyms aren't open all year and often shutdown for a variety of different reasons.

I'm pretty strongly against adding a third option to votes, mostly due to me wanting to keep the weeks progressing fairly quickly. I want to avoid a situation where it takes a month of updates to cover an in-universe week. And the two actions a week are definitely restrictive I will agree, but that's by design to just cut down on what I have to write.

While you did cross it out, I figure I'll just cover it real quick, but she uses a phone akin to an older blackberry. More rugged than standard phones, but with less features.

ohhhh I see now.

For Luna, that's mostly due to her being busy, and me not bothering to add her to the options as a result. You do have her contact info, but out of everyone she'll be the one hardest to contact due to being involved in the medical field. And sadly for social calls, that'll likely remain the same.

That's a suggestion I'll strongly consider, keeping the team at 4 would fit narravitely and let you get to know the four you have well. It's part of why I chose not to catch the 4th Pokemon on the tie break. Plus the team is pretty well developed after the 4th Pokemon so there's not really a reason to catch a 5th for a while. So you'll either be capped at 4 for a bit, or just have a long cooldown on catching Pokemon.

I don't think we'll be going wild looking for party members past the 4th for a minute anyway, but I think the cooldowns used were a good measure (and I would overall suggest it be 2 or so weeks after a party member is caught from here on out for pacing reasons otherwise).

Yep, I do enjoy giving out a fair few options. Treating it more like a sandbox to play around in was a fair bit of my intention, although I definitely want to have things progress as there are overarching plots ongoing and that are planned. Team Rocket for instance has their own plans occurring in the background. And yeah, option bloat is definitely an issue.

I don't mind the option bloat a ton, but I do seriously appreciate seeing a sandbox quest on the forum, especially with pokemon.
Ty for your responses!

Kanto Week 9 Part 1 - Water in the Rivers and Air
[X] Learn to Swim - While you do know how to swim, there is a notable difference between swimming for fun and scuba diving. And an even greater difference when it comes to exploring underwater caves. Dratini would have fun teaching you.
[X] Explore Unorthodox Locations - Exploring parts of the area most people don't will be an interesting experience. Pineco would very much enjoy hiking in the mountains.

Violet didn't realize how hard it would be to find scuba gear in the area. The settlement she was in didn't really have an official name, instead being referred to as the Local Pokecenter, the Power Plant, Electricville, etc. It was here she realized how spoiled for choice she was in the cities, where she could choose between ten different stores. Here the only option was a single general store attached to the Pokecenter where necessities were all that they sold.

Finding scuba gear was a step above things like food and bandaids with Violet being forced to wait a day before buying the gear secondhand from another trainer. During which she spent a few hours scrolling on her phone.

Her parents had congratulated her on her first gym victory, before asking when she would be back in Celadon City for her battle. Violet hesitated before saying she didn't know. The idea of her parents cheering for her made her feel warm and fuzzy inside, but it was tinged with the cloying feeling of self-doubt. That she'd somehow embarrass herself in front of them. Thankfully her parents changed the subject to more mundane concerns in their texts, which she traversed through mindlessly.

Continuing to scroll, she noticed that Testuya managed to earn the Boulder Badge, relying on his Onix and then Krabby to do so. It had been a close battle, although her childhood friend hadn't shared any of the details. As for Willow, she explained that during her journey through Mount Moon she had caught a Bronzor before having a battle with a member of Team Rocket who had been stealing Pokemon from trainers in the area. Violet frowned at that, she didn't like the idea of the Team having free reign anywhere, let alone a place where law enforcement rarely ventured.

Putting it out of her mind, Violet picked up her new scuba gear. After which she wandered towards the river's edge before letting out her Pokemon. "We'll be camping here for a few days," she said to which Dratini immediately began to cheer, causing Pineco to appear amused at the Mirage Pokemon's exuberance. Chansey by contrast chose to relax, waddling up to the river's edge before plopping down on a rock.

Violet stepped into the water herself until she was hip-deep. At which point Dratini began to excitedly swim circles around her and she began giggling at the sight. "Give me a minute," Violet pleaded with a smile on her face as she started fiddling with the various knobs and settings on the scuba gear. Quickly realizing it was far more complicated than she thought, she bit her lip as she concentrated.

She secured the mini-tank to her back, which provided her with 10 minutes of air. She wanted more, but realistically she just couldn't carry a larger, heavier tank through mountains. Screwing the regulator to the tank, her concentration was broken as a splash of water hit her.

Reeling back, she saw a giggling Dratini who splashed her once more. Violet knew she should focus on the scuba gear, but there was something far more important to do first. Dragging her arm across the surface of the water, she retaliated against the Mirage Pokemon, starting a battle between the two where the weapons were water. It took 20 minutes before their splash battle ended by mutual agreement. While Violet hadn't gotten the practice she desired, she found it hard to feel bad about it.

Resting on the edge of the bank beside Pineco, she spent a little while discussing some observations of the area that the Bagworm Pokemon saw. Such as the mountains on the other side of the river, which could make for an interesting journey.

After recovering her energy (and taking a picture of Dratini sleeping next to Chansey), Violet found a chance to practice for real. Over the next two hours, she spent a while diving into the water with her scuba gear. Her first breaths underwater were nerve-wracking, as every instinct she had told her it was a bad idea. She'd managed it, spending a few minutes underwater staring at her oxygen meter all the while. The first dive only lasted five minutes, mostly due to her heart rate drastically increasing her air intake, but slowly she managed to push it towards the 10 minutes advertised by her tank.

She learned a lot from the next few days. Firstly was the fact that exploring underwater caves would be something she would only do after a lot of practice. Not to mention with actual, dedicated equipment. A tank of air that lasts three hours would be a start, but that was still a long way off. The second lesson was that the water was cold. While it may be manageable on the surface, during one of her dives toward the deeper parts of the river, she realized that the temperature drops rather quickly and Violet knew she'd have to buy a wetsuit.

It was on the last day that she experienced something more unique. Deciding to swim on the surface, mostly to get used to how it felt to do so with scuba gear, Violet began to see drops of rain landing around her. She was a bit surprised by how hard it was to feel, as the normal motion of swimming already caused water to splash around her. At first, she thought about staying, but as the rain got heavier, her Pokemon began to feel nervous about Violet remaining in the river, and the shy girl couldn't find it in her heart to stay in.

Camping that night was a different experience than normal, as her Pokemon and her huddled under a blanket within her tent. It may not have been the best idea, as all of them felt cramped, but it felt wrong to put them in their Pokeballs. Which led to them doing their best impression of sardines in a can.

It was uncomfortable, but oddly cozy. The four of them barely slept through the night constantly being awoken by gusts of wind or each other. While it wasn't something Violet would ever want to do again, it was something she didn't regret.

When the rain finally ended and the sun came up, Violet stepped out of her tent and began to stretch. At this point, she was a good enough scuba diver that she could conduct basic dives so she felt it would be valuable to start exploring other areas. Pineco had some suggestions herself, and so they had decided to start exploring

[] Eastern Mountains - The mountain range across the river, it is a desolate place rarely traveled by most due to the difficulty traversing it.
[] Forest Mountains Above Route 9 - A range of forested mountains that are home to a variety of Pokemon. They are not that frequented by trainers due to the lack of powerful Pokemon.
[] Mountain Range over Rock Tunnel - A rather extensive mountain range with a lot of crevices and canyons. Traveling here would involve a significant degree of mountaineering.
[] River Exploration - A more sedate option would be to explore the river itself through a combination of a canoe, scuba gear, and other equipment.
[] Write-in

Approved Write-ins
[] Electric Overlook - Violet and Pineco would try to find a path through the mountains that got a good view of Electricville and the Power Plant alike.

Violet being forced to wait a day before buying the gear secondhand from another trainer.

Yeah that makes sense. Thank goodness for the used market and trainers as their own subcultural economy.

Aww poor girl, but her parents as always seem pretty supportive.

Welp, both our prospective rivals have a water type and a steel-type or future steel-type. Gonna have to keep an eye on both of them.

adorable. love the splash games being a solid part of their friendship.

GOOD. I'm looking forward to this being A Thing. Dragonite and Blissey napping against each other would be cute.

oh damn, I thought she'd have gotten a wetsuit with the gear. Well, yeah that'll be useful kiddo

This fic is adorable and gets a bunch of good JourneyFic type of moments in it. Reminds me of the one episode where Ash & Co survived a snowstorm huddled together.

Of course, our rival picks up one of the hard counters to our ace. We're going to want to pick up a Machamp or something to deal with this eventually although if we can hold out for something like a Skarmory or Heatran that would be better since they're both taunt users which is what we've been looking for in a fifth Pokemon anyways.
Onix and then Krabby
...Is he like intentionally catching all the bad Pokemon or something? Although if he evolves Onix at least that pick would actually be pretty decent, and a good trainer with a terrible team can still regularly beat a bad trainer with a good team.

Regardless, good update I'm enjoying the bonding time.

Don't forget that Houndoom is very easily available to us , hard counters Bronzog on two types and is another taunt user.

Machamp fits our team better than Houndoom on top of just being better overall well also being very easily available in Kanto, and the value taunt brings doesn't outweigh that so if we absolutely need a counter to Bronzong we should go with Machamp instead. However, I'd prefer to make do with just having some combination of Dragonite training up Aqua Tail plus Rain Dance, Magnezone STAB Thunderbolt, and Forretress Body Press until we can get a better option.

"Hey mom, dad, can we take a vacation to the sevii islands?", unless Cinnabar somehow has one, is the only way I can see us getting close to a Heatran
Skarmory should be much more accomplishable.

...Is he like intentionally catching all the bad Pokemon or something?

This has just enough anime battling aspects that I expect he could patch coverage and devise strategies to be a heavy hitter in his own right even with those two. The dude's got shounen protagonist enthusiasm to spare... like he read as Ash Expy-Like when I read the original fic.

YES YES YES YES

Again, when it comes to like showdown stats, but there's probably a fair bit we could do to train a houndour to be what we need.
Machamp is a mono-type so there's not a lot of weaknesses, but Bronzor does have psychic typing on it, and until that eevee evolves there's the risk of an Espeon or a Sylveon (but she could evo to Glaceon as well).

I'm not hugely opposed to a Machamp (we'd have to find a Machoke to trade for, or someone to trade back with, unless the evo conditions are different), and I do strongly agree with your points on existing team member movesets.

There is a reason why he had to fight Brock twice before winning. While Onix isn't as bad as they are in the games here, they just collapse against any water move. As it is, Tetsuya's team so far is a step below yours and Willow's.

"huh, people like my write-in" was the mood
it is now, presently: lmfao dice, cmon

wonder if this means Violet unlocks a "first horde battle" achievement, or otherwise just goes "hey pineco ilu, can you do the thing"

Dratini -> Thunder Wave should do the trick, since its AoE, the rest is sending out Chansey to start beating up the stunned pidgeys.

Kanto Week 9 Part 2 - Problematic Pidgy
[X] Electric Overlook - Violet and Pineco would try to find a path through the mountains that got a good view of Electricville and the Power Plant alike.

Trudging through the mountains between Eletricville and the Power Plant, Violet stopped for camp. It was the end of the first day of her journey through them, and she had climbed several miles to even get here. Due to the terrain, she had a limited number of options for her approach. Either taking a roundabout route from the intersection between Routes 9 and 10 or climbing a steep face near the Power Plant itself.

After observing the latter, and noting the various loose rocks and the necessity of using climbing gear, she had decided to take the long way around. It'd taken her most of the day to cross the first batch of mountains, giving her a good view of Electricville. Unfortunately, looking south towards the Power Plant, there was a set of mountains still in the way.

As night fell and she rested her weary legs, Violet spent time around a campfire with Pineco. She showed the Bagworm Pokemon where they were and indicated likely locations for vista points that could see both Electricville and the Power Plant. Most of these were located at the tops of the taller mountains in the southern part of the area. Pineco asked about a more western ridge that might have a shallower view, but Violet pointed out that it would at best see a quarter of either landmark.

Having convinced Pineco of her intended route cresting several of the southern mountains, Violet and her Pokemon slept through the night, walking up with the rising sun. Hiking through the ridgeline of peaks, she arrived at the sloping uphill climb to where she had theorized a vista point was. Pausing to admire the landscape, Violet blinked as she saw a cluster of bird Pokemon in the air. Taking a closer look, she spotted a group of Pidgy that adjusted course towards her. Maybe they were friendly, she remembered thinking.

"Keep up that Twister, Dratini!" Violet called out as the Mirage Pokemon maintained his attack, preventing several of the Pidgy from approaching as well as knocking several from the sky.

To the right, Chansey was using Echoed Voice repeatedly whilst Pineco body blocked any Pidgy that made it past Dratini, and there were quite a few that did.

"Come on, everyone, keep moving!" She called out, seeing that while the situation was stable for now, her Pokemon were getting tired.

Dratini chirped in response, slithering backward in a zigzag pattern ensuring he could move, dodge, and maintain his attack entirely. In contrast, however, Chansey and Pineco were far slower, with the Egg Pokemon choosing to physically lift the slower Bagworm Pokemon and waddling towards the overhang Violet had indicated.

Having realized that the danger of the Pidgy flight was the sheer number of attack vectors they could take at once, Violet had begun moving towards a more restricted environment from the beginning. It certainly wasn't easy as despite the flight only using rudimentary tactics and being rather inexperienced, there were a full fifteen Pidgy arrayed against her. Relying mostly on area-of-effect attacks like Twister and Echoed Voice, Violet had been making good progress at keeping the wild Pokemon at bay before they spread out enough that her plan wasn't as effective anymore.

Ducking under the overhang, Violet sighed in relief as the Pidgy flock backed off immediately. Understanding that they didn't have any hope of getting through the group of three trained Pokemon from a single direction, the flight briefly tried to wait them out. And after a few minutes decided that stealing food from them was too difficult and left.

With that amount of excitement, Violet and co decided to camp early, erecting their campsite under the overhang. Spending the evening tending to injuries sustained during the fight, the shy girl felt strangely energetic throughout the whole endeavor. No one said exploration was easy, and this just confirmed it. But where else would she get a similar experience?

It was on the third day that Violet crested the summit of one of the southern mountains in the range. Panting heavily from the steep climb, she rested her hands on her knees for a few seconds before looking up.

There was the Power Plant far below her. Intimidated by the sharp drop (which she estimated was 60-70 degrees steep), Violet made sure she didn't get too close to the edge. Instead, she snapped a few pictures of the site before turning around towards Electricville, the town still visible from miles away. Smiling wildly, the shy girl was glad she got this experience.

And she knew it would be the first of many to come.

The Tenth Week, Pick 2

Pokemon Actions

[] Catch a fourth Pokemon - Catching a Magnemite or other electric-type Pokemon is why you came here, there are almost certainly good options present.
[] Fish for Pokemon - While it's not normal, there are enough Water Pokemon out there to interest you. Fishing for them in the river next to Route 10 would be fun.
[] Train with your Pokemon - All of your Pokemon are good in a battle, and each has unique skills. Chansey's singing has started to become incredibly relaxing.

Battling Actions

[] Challenge New Trainers - Now that you and your Pokemon had developed, fighting a few trainers in succession was doable.
[] Challenge an Experienced Trainer - Some trainers in the area have a badge, beating them may be a good experience.

Exploration Actions

[] See the sights in the Area - While the attractions are limited to the Power Plant, exploring its interior would be rather fun. Chansey would appreciate the more scenic tour. Wait, why are you two here?!
[] Explore Unorthodox Locations - Exploring parts of the area most people don't will be an interesting experience. While you have explored Electric Outlook, there's still a lot to see.
[] Go on a Lengthy Boat Tour - Now that you're comfortable in the water, you could drag a canoe up into the mountains where the river starts. Then you could take an expedition towards the ocean itself.

Traveling Actions (Can Take 1 of These Only)

[] Travel to Cerulean City - The safest path back to civilization, once you have your fill of the area, you can choose to head back via a safer route.
[] Travel through the Rock Tunnel - Heading to Lavender town through the Rock Tunnel is the traditional method of travel for trainers, even if it is likely to take a few days to do.
[] Travel to Write-in - There are many locations in Kanto one could take a direct route towards.

Social Actions (For socials, it's assumed you keep up a basic level of contact through text, choosing a social means I write it up)

[] Call up your parents - Your parents would appreciate a call to congratulate you on your first gym badge.
[] Call Tetsuya - An old childhood friend of yours, the two of you drifted off recently. He is currently training his Pokemon.
[] Call Willow - The trainer you recently defeated, she seems fun if exhausting. She just tried her third gym battle and was swept by Misty. She's extremely fired up now.
