The automatic attendance for dueling club and ancient runes club, are those considered social activity?

Thoughts? Any issues?
Fuck it, edit: Jacob is gonna suck on Social actions this month. Give him other things to do. Can't say it more clearly now.

Under the "Social" section, the QM included:
The Riddle of Riddle
Runes Club Research

and also

Random Encounter
Write a Letter

Per QM, Social actions this month are going to suck and flat out stated that we should give him other things to do.

[] Plan This train has no brakes v3
Personal actions x10
-[] Train Intelligence
-[] Train Creativity
-[] Train Constitution
-[] DADA x2 (if DADA training fails skip protego)
-[] Spell learning x3 (Protego deep understanding, Glacius, Draconifors, Expecto Patronum)
-[] Potion learning x2 (Shrinking Solution, Antidote to Uncommon Poisons)

I think that attempting to work on Expecto Partronum this turn could be questionable but I've included it as a stretch goal if we fail at the DADA training which seems very unlikely to happen at 5% an action.

@ShyGuy

The riddle action is also a social action.

Edit: Further revised the plan below. See version 3 a couple posts down.

The QM has explicitly said that taking social actions this turn is a bad idea.

Thank you both for your input. The revised plan is below. Took out the social actions, kept the exploration to help Jacob's spirits and hopefully cheer him up (besides it being cool), and added another attribute training action (Constitution b/c it is easy to raise and if we keep exploring or doing detective work it shouldn't be too low). Any other concerns?

[] Plan Empathetic Adventures V2
-[] Break through your Horizon I – Hogwarts is built in a valley area — surrounding mountains are part of the landscape. You had always wondered about them, because they were your daily horizon. Usually there would not have been enough time for you to get there, wander around to explore the lands and come back in time for curfew. Having access to a broom would have helped you, but now that you had secret exits out of Hogwarts… the horizon was not your limit anymore. Use the unknown passageway in the north end of the castle. (Takes 3 Actions, can't be taken in the same month as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and What hides behind trees)
-[] Business School of Hogsmeade (Multiple Actions on this count as multiple rolls stacking) – This is the first year, in which you can go to Hogsmeade. Good that you've been planning for this since first year: Buy Books, Ingredients, Joke Shop Articles, Instruments and other things. Go and look, if you can make some money by buying things for first and second years. Roll for how many are interested and then for how much they want to spend. Take 15% as a fee.
-[] 8x Personal actions
--[]1x Training Empathy
--[]1x Train Constitution
--[]1x Training Legilimency & Occlumency (Hits D-)
--[]1x Training Potions. (Hits P-)
--[]4x Spell learning (Focillo, Draconifors, Glacius, Diffindo)

Reasoning:
  • No social stuff because we aren't up to it this turn, which is understandable.
  • An Exploration action because we haven't done one of those in a while. Also, based on the title (Break through your Horizon I) I expect that this will take more than one action to actually complete, so it is probably best if we start it now. We already sort of have an idea of what is in the lake and in the forests. But why would Hogwarts have a secret passage heading towards the mountains? I have no idea why one would have been made, but I would like to find out. I would have chosen the Journal action, but based on Jacob's current headspace, I don't think going through a war is best for his psyche. Probably better to wait until he recovers from his time home before opening that book again. Also, now that we have our nice new boots, there really isn't a reason to hold off on this. Exploration is more of a lighthearted activity than the journal would be and will hopefully put Jacob in a better mood. Final bit of reasoning is that we don't want to stay cooped up in the castle the entire time. QM implied that we should still stay somewhat active, just less social than normal.
  • The Business action to get money which can always be useful. But mainly to even out the number of actions taken so the rest can be used for Personal Actions.
  • Personal actions:
    • Attributes: Empathy because it is an easy attribute to raise and our last couple of interactions with our friends didn't go so well. Hopefully having more empathy will make things go a bit smoother. Also one action on Constitution as well. We are going to continue to go on adventures so it is useful to have. We are likely to get a level up this turn and we can put the points we get from that into Intellect of Creativity.
    • Skills:
      • The Mind Arts because they have been repeatedly used against us and we haven't really noticed IC. We also have a lot of secrets that we don't want getting out now. Better to brush up on this.
      • Alchemy because we want to work on the Map eventually. Some incremental progress is good for that. Also, our entire being is sort of tied up in Alchemy. Better to have some understanding of the subject.
    • Spells:
      • Draconifors and Glacius because they look useful and are required for the end of the year exams.
      • The Warming Charm because it was implied in the text that we would need it if we wanted to spend any length of time outside in the coming weather. Especially if we want to do exploration.
      • Diffindo because it looks like a useful spell to have in exploration and can also be used against dangerous creatures in a pinch if we need to get somewhat lethal.
      • After this month we should meet all the requirements needed to learn the Patronus, and I hope to do so then.
I basically hope to get a lot of the spells out of the way now so that we can work on the Patronus next month followed by the potions required for exams. Thoughts? Any issues?

I would like some sort of adventure action, not going all in on personal actions.

Maybe break through your horizon?

Wouldn't involve any social activity

-[] Potion learning x2 (Shrinking Solution, Antidote to Uncommon Poisons)
Why are you learning this two? Wouldn't it be better to learn the Wideye Potion as it's both a prerequisite for the exam meaning we need to learn it anyway, and it means that researching Blue Wideye is easier and the sooner that is gotten the sooner we'll get an additional personal action every month which can be used to train. It also should have a great deal of other benefits too as I've previously mentioned.

-[] Spell learning x3 (Protego deep understanding, Glacius, Draconifors, Expecto Patronum)
Similarly why Glacius in your plan? You can't even call it a hint, it was more like a bat across the head that learning the warming charm is pretty essential if you want to do any outside exploration which makes a great deal of sense given it's winter and Hogwarts is in Scotland. Secondly the most likely options for where to go exploring are the lake, which will be even colder, and the mountains, which will be very cold and windy ... so yeah.

Glacius is a spell needed by the end of the year and my plan doesn't have us exploring this turn, I believe with a DC of 50 we can learn the warming charm with a single action and can do it next turn. I'm hoping to get some of the needed by end of the year stuff done and out of the way. That's the same reasoning for the potion choices but I can be convinced to switch those to wideye if people think it's the right thing to do.

So I guess if any one wants me to tell me now.

Thoughts? Any issues?

All just thoughts.

Since you are Exploring, perhaps put Focillo as the first spell to learn in case of disasterous rolls for spell learning?

I understand your reasoning for Legilimency, since Alchemy is something our character is interested in and the Hogwarts Map quest is blocked until we get a D+ in Alchemy: perhaps put it in Alchemy instead?

Perhaps take the Constitution point and put it into Intelligence or Creativity instead? I understand the probabilities are lower, but since we are leveling up this turn it would be better to up one stat to 5 if we can. The reasoning is that we would want to put both points into that 5 stat since each point up decreases the probability of it being trainable.

Yes, but we're very likely to be exploring next turn so it's still needed and essential if we're to do them, so it's better done this turn. Glacius isn't required until the exams which are five turns away, so I don't remotely see the urgency in needing it right now.

[X] I don't understand the Question – These boots are now your everyday boots. You will wear them at all times and use them freely. There should be no rules against this in place in the castle, because quite frankly, an item like this has never existed. Use the boots in any kind or form to have fun, for duelling club and whatever you have in mind. No further votes for when to use or not. The sky is yours to play with.

I really would like to use this phase of the year to establish a plan for the near future to finish all the required spells and potions so we don't run the risk of missing anything. Plus the earlier we finish this, the earlier we can follow our curiosity to our heart's content.
One project however is a bit of an outsider here. Expecto Patronum
That "near-death" experience with the dementors should still be at the back of his mind, we recently learned that there are ways to trap souls before they can move on and it might do Jacob some good to learn something where happy thoughts are paramount.

The plan exchanges 6 normal actions for 3 personal actions (

[ ] First work hard, then play hard
- [ ] Do Something! - Look for Padma and Moraq and ask if they are interested in a small study group. Maybe some of their social skills will rub off on you.
- [ ] Do Something! - Look for Tracy and ask if she's interested in private dueling sessions
- [ ] Runes Club Research
- [ ] In Search of New Spells - Water-Making Spell (Aguamenti)
good against fire and a nice combo with Glacius
- [ ] Do your research - Draconifors (Needed for exams at the end of the year) (Requires Transformation skill of at least D+) - cleared
- [ ] Do your research - Glacius (Needed for exams at the end of the year) (Requires Charm skill of at least D) - cleared
- [ ] Do your research - Shrinking Solution (Needed for exams at the end of the year)
-
[ ] Train, Learn, Achieve - Charms
- [ ] Do your research - Expecto Patronum - What stops an unstoppable force? (Requires Charm and DADA skill of at least P) DADA - cleared, Charms - cleared after one study session
- [ ] Do your research - Expecto Patronum
- [ ] Do your research - Expecto Patronum
- [ ] Do your research - Expecto Patronum

Is this even possible?

Good point, done.
I understand your reasoning for Legilimency, since Alchemy is something our character is interested in and the Hogwarts Map quest is blocked until we get a D+ in Alchemy: perhaps put it in Alchemy instead?
I'm up for it. I wasn't that attached to Potions anyways. And we already meet the requirements for everything we want to make in regards to potions. Working on Alchemy is fine with me as we do have stuff that we can't work on until we bring it up to higher levels.
And that is a reasonable enough compromise I suppose. Don't hurt me though if we fail the DC again.

Reasoning:
  • Exploration: It will be good for Jacob to do exploration. Besides all my previous reasoning for it, I also believe that sitting around the castle all month would be boring, not only to read but to write. The QM did state that he didn't want us to sit around the castle all year.
  • Business to even out the actions, previous reasoning applies.
  • Personal Actions:
    • Only changes from previous plan are:
      • Attributes: Training Intelligence instead of Constitution as a compromise to those that want to train this stat up.
      • Put Potions back on the table because it was the last auto-success. After this training action we shouldn't have to worry about it for the rest of the year, and likely much of the previous year.
      • Moved the Warming Charm up to be the first spell on the list. It was implied that we would need this spell during the colder months, and it is January. So it is kinda important.
Thoughts?

Edit:
Is this even possible?
It is possible. But it was stated by the QM that social actions wouldn't be the greatest idea right now. Hence, people making plans dealing with exploring and/or training.

Thank you for listening to my thoughts. Not to be a nudge, but my point was to suggest lowering Legilimency and upping Alchemy: not lowering potions.

We absolutely should up potions this turn to P- because it is the last auto success. Since we don't have any learning bonuses in Potions, next turn improving it has a 25% chance of failure. Meanwhile Legilimency will remain the same. In Potions vs. Alchemy, I would prefer potions since we have to learn potions.

Good, cause those two options are just to establish future opportunities to learn better when Jacob is out of his funk.

@Tabula Rasa this has been bugging me for quite a while since my reread -- why is flying a core skill? It seems like a bit of an odd choice personally, but I'm pretty sure you have some logic to it (even if that logic is "it seems reasonable to me")

I always assumed that Flying was a core skill because, to be good at riding a broom, you probably need a very strong core.

...

Sorry. :V

Moratorium is over.

Most of my previous reasoning remains the same. Exploration because it hasn't been done in a while, and sitting in a castle for the whole month sounds boring and unhealthy, both mentally and physically. Business to round the actions out to an even number. Personal Actions with a mix of Attribute (Empathy because we weren't the best with our friends last month, and Intelligence to hopefully bump that up before we level up), Skill (Potions for the last autosuccess and Alchemy because of the map), and Spell training. Next month we will automatically meet the requirements for the Patronus and we can start on that then.

Also, don't forget to vote for the shoes too. I did.
[X] These are for Exploration Only

Not to be a nudge, but my point was to suggest lowering Legilimency and upping Alchemy: not lowering potions.
Makes sense. Yeah, I put Potions back on the table. This way we probably don't have to worry about for quite a while after this.
