A Certain Scientific XCOM Project

Or to mention their name, like below -

@Skarmory I was reading through this quest (great stuff, BTW) and noticed that one of the mission posts hasn't been threadmarked. It's on page 29 of this thread and it takes place between the ones currently marked Violent Library 3 and Violent Library 4 (it's the one where the grenade frags the Sectoids and Thin Man in the billiards room).

Also can we research better webbing or load carrying equipment for the troops so they can carry more than 1 item? Can we develop or requisition vehicles that can carry more than 4 troops in a squad?

Can we organise better medical training for our SHIRAI units? With their teleport abilities they'd probably make good medics to quickly get to and stabilise wounded troops, and if they can wait until their teleport ability recharges they can port out carrying the wounded with them, to get them to treatment faster. Actually, can the SHIRAI units carry other people with them when they teleport?

Can the SHIRAI units carry other people with them while they teleport?

I hope this answers your question

However, they are level 2's, but-
Teleport: Teleports SHIRAI to a target location within ten meters in place of her normal move. SHIRAI may only teleport to locations she can see, but does not trigger Overwatch or Suppression upon arrival, and can act as if she had made a single move afterwards. 2 turn cooldown.

I am unaware if this means that she can teleport others as well, but it most likely does.

My, my, someone's been busy! Don't know if it'll translate into anything, but eh, we'll see.

Anyway, still there, in case someone wondered.

Nice defence of plan veekie, but didn't we all vote for it anyway? It's been a while, though, don't quite remember our debates back then.

Could you not suggest this to the GM as well? there are not a lot of tactically based quests like this, as I have seen so far, and perhaps we can react these missions in a program, or game, like someone said somewhere, Fire emblem grid system.

Actually, I admit I wouldn't be a fan of that. We did not vote for the complete tactical experience, but for the more informal one.

I am unaware if this means that she can teleport others as well, but it most likely does.

It most likely does not, actually, otherwise it would have been mentioned.

Now, to see if the chatter draws Skarmory back.

You'll want to be careful with putting a bunch of people in comas with the Level Upper device, because I'm sure that given her history with the device, Kiyama Harumi wouldn't be very happy with it. That said, as a way to give a little boost to the growth of your Espers, it's a very useful tool.

It's worth noting that you can still build a Level Upper if you don't choose Kiyama Harumi as a commander, but choosing Kiyama lets you start with it and makes it slightly more effective than if you had just built it otherwise.

Could this one of the things that we could research, Implement it with alien technology, and provide further research to make it safer at least?

It's more than likely a SHIRAI upgrade coming with experience. Level Upper might help in that respect (though not sure how much - going through canon, it's a more crude system of the MISAKA network, so just slapping it over the established network would do nothing. There'll be needs for improvements).

EDIT : oh, you were talking about Level Upper only. Well, yes, probably.

So... I do understand that we have been over this, but does someone have the vote count?
I have.

Plan Veekie
Vote count: 6

Ah, okay.

Definitely want to study an intact one, so we can deal with future ones better.

Recap of situation:
Shirai 01 - Inside building, at device
Shirai 02 - At door, device there
Misaka 10033 - Overwatch at door. Has visual of enemies. Under fire
Misaka 10035 - Overwatch at door

[X] Shirai 01 - Secure building interior. Identify alternate access points(windows, doors, stairs) and overwatch. If contact is lost with command, get in position to cover alternate entrances better. Use Telefrag grenade if they can hit at least two enemies at once.
[X] Shirai 02 - Secure building interior. Identify alternate access points(windows, doors, stairs) and overwatch. If contact is lost with command, get in position to cover alternate entrances better. Use Telefrag grenade if they can hit at least two enemies at once.
[X] Misaka 10035 - Suppress an enemy. If contact is lost with command, take cover after 10033 provides suppressive fire and assume overwatch over main entrance or any alternate entrances.
[X] Misaka 10033 - Take cover and move indoors after 10035 suppresses enemies. Attempt to hack the Signal Jammer. If contact is lost with command, assume defensive posture and support 10035 with suppressive fire next turn.

Since hacking notes "other factors", I decided to have 10035 do the hacking, since she has a clearer state of mind.

Plan Arvin:
Vote count: 1

Thank you. In that case:

[X] ALL UNITS: If contact with HQ is lost, assume defensive positions inside the building.
[X] SHIRAI 01: Destroy Signal Jammer. Move to cover and Overwatch. Use Telefrag if it can hit more than one Alien.
[X] SHIRAI 02: Assist in destroying Signal Jammer if SHIRAI 01 cannot do so alone. Move indoors to cover and Overwatch. Use Telefrag if it can hit more than one Alien.
[X] MISAKA 10033: Take cover until Aliens stop firing. Move indoors once alien fire stops and Overwatch/Suppress.
[X] MISAKA 10035: Take cover indoors and move up to suppress Aliens shooting at MISAKA 10033. If Aliens disengage, Overwatch.

We can risk a Hack on that other Jammer later, but right now we have two unknown X-Rays shooting at us.

I guess Veekie wins by a long shot

Question for @Skarmory , Will there be esper aliens. You know, to spice things up a little bit?

Preferably mid game.

My reasoning for this is the alien abductions. When they abduct espers, they could technicality research their abilities right?

Remember guys. The Aliens can research to.

I'm applying UFO: defense logic into this, as they were not scripted at all.

I'm stating the obvious Is our enemy basically controlled by the GM right? so...... They are controlled by a player character, and therefore smarter.

So.... We must use psychological warfare!

Maybe a research option late game when we learn that they are controlled
by a hivemind in mars.

This being can be the GM.

Considering the psychic abilities of the Sectoids and the Ethereals, coupled with the fact that their attacks seem focused exclusively on Academy City, could they be related to the creation of espers? Especially considering how similar the X-COM mind control powers are to the abilities of Shokuhou Misaki?

@Skarmory Now that we have the Genetic Engineering Facility completed, if we can get genetic samples from other espers like Shirai and Shokohou can we copy those samples and increase their supply so we can produce more clones from them?

Okay, I'm sympathetic to what you're trying to do, really I am, but still :

1) it really would be better if you weren't double posting constantly.
2) what's the point of advertising the quest if Skarmory doesn't come back? He might not, he might. But have some patience. And if it's dead... well, it happens, unfortunately. And you never know, maybe he'll find some inspiration back in a month or so. Right now, better treat this quest as if on a prolonged hiatus, keep it on our watch list, and see what else we can find in the meantime.

Well, Recommending it might work instead then.

Again... He would not be checking the quest constantly if it was dead. Not only that, but it was not the GM that ended it. It was the lack of players.

However, from what I have seen, the GM not seen these posts yet.

Recommending might be useful to bring players in, but it is kind of useless without a QM. I suppose it is possible for a willing member to take over the quest if Skarmory has given up on it (which is not a given ; even if he doesn't have time now, he might want to come back to it someday), but I have yet to see that happening since I'm here.

Alright, since people have been demanding my presence frequently over the past few days, I guess I'll tell you what's been going on.

When I originally started this quest, I had a boring 9 to 5 internship where I was asked to do almost nothing, and so I had time to run 3 quests simultaneously with every other day updates, one of which (this one) had heavy use of interface and pictures. Lately, though, I went back to school and ended up much busier than I expected (the past three weeks or so being a continuous barrage of career fairs, midterms, and CAD projects) and I've barely had time for Puella Magi Exemplare Terrae, let alone my other two quests.

Simultaneously, at the same time, I had the realization that I was looking at this quest like a chore, and dreading coming back to update. If I had to say when my enthusiasm for this quest died, it would probably be shortly after the death in the first mission, when everybody was raging at me for someone dying in an XCOM quest.

That, and handling the XCOM mechanics and drawing maps, even with the time saving shortcuts I devised, is still a giant pain in the ass, much more so than I would have expected. It didn't help that thus far this campaign has pretty much been a standard, no-frills XCOM campaign, and whenever I sat down to work on this quest, I thought to myself, "Why don't I just play XCOM instead of running this? Hell, why doesn't everybody who's playing this just go play XCOM?"

I still don't have an answer to that question.

Which isn't to say that I am done with this quest, or that it won't be returning. The revival of interest has given me a little bit of my spark back, and as a result of it I plan to get you guys an update sometime this week, and hopefully get back onto a more regular schedule. But before I can go much further than the end of this mission, I need to get it straight what I want to say with this quest's narrative (yes, there is a narrative, I just haven't decided what it is yet), instead of making it 'XCOM where you start with overpowered soldiers'. And that will take more time.

TL;DR

  • Quest was dead, but you guys revived it with your damn Medkits.
  • Update sometime this week.
  • No maps until I find a more efficient way to do them. (I have an idea on this front, though I'll need to check out the logistics first, which will also take time. That's a between missions sort of thing.)
  • After this mission is completed, there'll be another hiatus while I try to figure out what, if anything, I can do thematically with this quest. Not sure if I will come back from that one with any alacrity.

Then perhaps, instead of every 2 to three days, maybe every sunday afternoon between missions, and every 4 days in a mission for a update would be lighter, and it sure will give a lot more time to update, yes?

Maybe for your other quests, you can do what people do with fan fictions. Every quest gets updated every other week. Kind of like a rotary motion.

Hopefully the others agree with me here.

Looks like when the misaka died,, they were disappointed with themselves.

I'm trying to not just help, but find an acceptable plan for this that would benefit us and you.

Who said maps are needed? They might help with the tactics, but when you are not sure on how to make the map making simpler, just don't do it until you do. Besides, perhaps a player would like to make a map for you instead.

(Is there some kind of random map generator? that would be very useful. like you can go into a game like x-com ufo defense and let the computer make the map for you)

Or, instead of every week, maybe when mid terms/ assignments are on you can do this plan, and when Holidays strike, you can do the original plan.

Because, I'm used to stories being halted. For a long time to. For a whole year...... It's like a TV series that stops half way just before it was about to get good.

Maybe brainstorm with us about it, for example X-Com is basically you vs aliens with Exalt being a bunch of annoying pricks who hinder you and provide great XP fodder in return.

So instead let's shift this along a different axis. A lot of Academy City's higher ups want more 5 Sta... I mean Level 5 Espers. There's been some logical proof that combat and new experiences can improve lower level espers. There's a bunch of aliens attacking the world, and boy the rest of the world would like some help from Academy City. Academy City has nearly 10k copies of a certain esper they can use to help out. Hopefully getting at least some of them to level 5, if they can get at least 1 that'll be good evidence that this works well.

Let alone any bonus alien loot or good will for the faction we're working for (?) or something like that.

Of course the rest of the world has its own plans as well. There's the X-Com Project by 12~ Big Nations, there's Exalt, there's the Magical Side's own Anti-Alien Project and some people trying to use / control / are controlled by aliens. Let alone other big groups like the Church trying to deal with it as well.

Thus our missions now take place mostly outside of Academy City and there's a fairly good chance any given mission will involve non-alien contact we'll have to deal with.

Mechanics/Gameplay wise we're less micro-managing and instead more 'my group of X girls know basic combat, I provide strategic overview decisions and dealing with foreign groups.' So we're here to tell them 'focus on saving lives' vs 'focus on killing aliens' or 'rush the bomb' vs 'take it slow' so the average mission takes 1-3~ updates now, with maybe 1-2~ updates for dealing with other groups. Maybe when they encounter something new we help plan out their standard operation procedures for dealing with it. I.E Jammers, like take the safer action/ take middle ground / take risks for rewards. That kind of thing. Or 'prioritize lids over anything else, then disks then thin men' or whatever.

Idea of Academy City tiny cloned hiveminded girls liasoning in the field with canon-ish X-Com sounds hilarious.

I try to set up schedules for myself to avoid long delays, but I admit that it hasn't been easy. The motivation to write a given quest has to be there when I sit down to write it, and for the last while it just hasn't been there for this quest. Which is not to say that I won't have a sudden surge of motivation today or tomorrow and write three updates worth of material at once-only that if I'm not feeling it, I don't want to write-especially with a quest as mechanically intensive as this one.

Who said maps are needed? They might help with the tactics, but when you are not sure on how to make the map making simpler, just don't do it until you do. Besides, perhaps a player would like to make a map for you instead.

I didn't originally use maps, but people requested them during the first mission, and because I had more free time at the time the quest started, I agreed. It turns out that the way I do maps (paint.net, with the map in one layer and the characters in another) is very inefficient for maps larger than one screen.

I think I've found an acceptable solution for the maps, but it's very difficult to apply retroactively, so there'll still be no maps for the remainder of this mission.

Maybe brainstorm with us about it, for example X-Com is basically you vs aliens with Exalt being a bunch of annoying pricks who hinder you and provide great XP fodder in return.

Hopefully getting at least some of them to level 5, if they can get at least 1 that'll be good evidence that this works well.

Pressure from Academy City to produce higher level espers is a good idea, I'll start trying to think of ways to work that in. It'll probably be a back end mechanics thing that takes place during strategic turns-I just haven't figured out how to do it yet.

Honestly, I hate the way the Magic side operates in Raildex, and found all of their plots in Index extremely tedious. I still plan to work them in at some point (probably as a more interesting EXALT substitute), but I'm not sure what capacity that will be in or whether they will bear any resemblance to existing groups like Necessarius.

I'm not thinking about mechanics changes at this point. The mechanics aren't that big a deal for me, so long as I'm excited to write the quest. It's just that the excitement hasn't been there in a while.

What made it exciting for me is the possibilities that can come out of this. You have your clones which are two levels below their originals. You play as the gal who made the level upper tech. Maybe, it could be like the abilities promotion system in X-COM. Sure, you can get vanilla abilities, but what about the esper powers? every promotion you get a new ability, and then when you get to a certain ability, you get a choice. Do you either want to get a more powerful in the zone or level 4 esper abilities for your shirai? (This is after you find out that the aliens have salvaged esper abilities for themselves) You were about to vote yes when you saw the warning- If you do this, this unit will use network connection and lose squad sight forever, to prevent the other inexperienced/ unprepared sisters from being hurt. (Lets say a remedy for the fetus monster is experience; you managed to infuse level upper with alien tech and made it safer, but your soldiers need experience) choosing in the zone will do what it does it vanilla, but going level 4 gives you level 4 abilities, however you have to do a trade off that could hurt you in the metagame.

Or maybe, to put simply, you don't get sectopods with supernatural powers in X-COM, do you?

Or worse. Teleporting chyrssalids.

Operation Violent Library, Part 7
I was hoping for a nice, easy update, and then you guys rolled that number...

"Unit 10033, hack the device! 10035, cover her! SHIRAI units, watch the entrances to the building!"

"Orders received, Commander," unit 10033 says monotonously. "Attempting hack now." From the entire group's microphones, you hear drywall and wood splintering, followed by the rattle of 10035's weapon as she returns fire.

"Enemies are engaging from extreme distance, Commander!" one of the SHIRAI units says. "Most of their shots have been nowhere near--" The feed cuts completely out.

"What just happened!" you yell. "Is this another problem with the original Misaka? Get me my audio feeds back!"

"We're trying, Commander," a technician across the room replies. "The jamming field intensified! All of our channels are being blocked!"

"Get them unblocked now or Academy City's higherups will have all of our asses!"

"Commander, we're trying our best," COMMUNICATIONS says, clearly flustered as she pounds away at her keyboard. "But this might take a bit of time, especially since we have no knowledge of the jamming device's protocols or methodology--"

"Get it done!" you snap, storming out of the room into the hallway and slamming the door shut behind you. As soon as you're out of earshot, you slam your fist full force into the nearest wall. Unsurprisingly, your fist gives way before the wall does, and tears spring to your eyes as you clutch your broken hand to your chest.

You nurse your wounded hand for a few minutes, grimacing in pain, before you manage to find the strength to return to the Situation Room. There, you see COMMUNICATIONS with a Notepad document open, typing a long, scrolling string of code, while two technicians begin attaching extra electrodes to Last Order.

"Welcome back, Commander!" COMMUNICATIONS says, handing you a bag of ice. "We're activating our contingency plan for a sudden, large-bandwidth jamming that disrupts field operations."

"How did you--"

"I worked on Project Radio Noise before this, Commander," COMMUNICATIONS says wryly. "You're not the first one of my superiors to try to punch a hole in a wall." COMMUNICATIONS stands up, still hunched over her console as she types frantically. "How are our hardware modifications coming!"

"We're ready when you are!" the technicians standing over Last Order say, stepping away and plugging the newly attached electrodes into a makeshift antenna.

"Alright!" COMMUNICATIONS yells back. "Setting the Radio Noise network to telepathic relay mode in three...two...one...now!" She slams a finger down on the enter key.

"Commander! Is that you?" MISAKA 10035 says through the speakers. The room erupts in applause.

"Status report!" you call out.

"One tango attempted to enter through the side doors and was subdued," 10035 reports. "We are still taking long distance fire from the north. SHIRAI 1 was struck by a glancing shot, but she is unharmed to the best of my knowledge."

"It destroyed half of my blouse!" SHIRAI complains. "That's significant harm!"

"You should not have worn nonuniform clothing on a mission!" 10035 snaps back.

T1: Deceased, behind a table specifically designed for playing the game of billiards.
T2: Deceased
T3: Deceased, inside the jammer building

Who?

[ ] MISAKA 10033
[ ] MISAKA 10035
[ ] SHIRAI 1
[ ] SHIRAI 2

What?

[ ] Move to a different location.

[ ] Fire at an enemy.

[ ] Take an overwatch position.

[ ] Suppress an enemy (MISAKAs only)

[ ] Use an esper ability.

[ ] Use an equipment item.

[ ] Special: Attack the Signal Jammer! (100% chance to hit, ??? to destroy)
-[ ] If destroyed: the XCOM team gains security camera feed access for the remainder of the mission.

[x] Special: Attempt to hack the Signal Jammer! (MISAKA units only; success chance based on WILL and contextual factors)
Major Failure: May not be attempted again for 3 turns.

Well, that could have been worse.

Hmm. Keep defensive positions until new hack can be attempted?

Perhaps we should take this course of action-

[]10033 Use the Signal jammer as cover and overwatch
[]10035 Move outside, turn right and position yourself next to the right dumpster and overwatch.
[]SHIRAI 1 get to nearest full cover positon and hunker down.
[]SHIRAI 2 Assist 10035 as much as possible.

Reasoning-
10035 should cover the side door with overwatch- If any aliens try to flank, 10035 should get them.

10033 should move to the signal jammer and hunker down, because the aliens might not move, and, overwatch does not work on unmoving enemies.

SHIRAI 1 is under heavy fire. same reason as before

SHIRAI 2 should get in a position where they can not shoot at her and overwatch, just in case any of them attempt to bust through the windows.

Feel free to post suggestions on how to make the plan better.
