A Certain Scientific XCOM Project

Honestly, probably nothing. At first glance, Touma is completely ill-suited to deal with those guys, unless somehow plasma weaponry falls under the "unnatural" side of Imagine Breaker, which I doubt. He might be handy against Ethereals, but he'd die horribly against a Muton or a Chrysalid.
TFW your relevance drops like a rock.
Poor Touma. I guess he'll stick to completely negating magic and punching the lights out of people.

"Alright, team, investigate the EM signals," you say. "Unit 10035, I want regular updates on your health status. SHIRAI units, lead the way into the building."

You hear frantic whispering back and forth between the team members, as they try to come up with a plan. Finally, you hear the click of a grenade pin, followed by the slow creak of a door.

The grenade never detonates.

"Empty?" MISAKA 10033 hisses.

"Looks that way," SHIRAI hisses back. "And, um, onee-sama...how do I put the pin back in the grenade?"

Three team members sigh with exasperation. "MISAKA will assist you," says unit 10035. "You two sweep the building."

Footsteps ring out as you turn to the technicians inside XCOM headquarters. "Where the hell are my video feeds!" you yell. "I don't care what Mikoto Misaka is doing, I want eyes in now!"

"Not happening," COMMUNICATIONS replies. "There's too much interference! Our equipment is sensitive, and one burst of EM radiation that's too large---"

The lights powered by your backup generators flicker out, then flash back on.

"At least tell me you've found something of interest in there!" you call out to your troops.

"We've found a signal jammer on the ground floor of the building, near the front door!" SHIRAI 2 calls out. "Orders, comma--shit!"

"What's happening!"

"Enemy contacts outside the glass front of the building!" unit 10033 reports. "MISAKA can't get a clear look at them, but MISAKA believes there are at least two hostiles firing upon us!"

"But if MISAKA cannot see them very well, then it is likely they cannot likely see MISAKA," unit 10035 reports. "10033 and SHIRAI, take cover and await the commander's orders!"

Who?

[ ] MISAKA 10033
[ ] MISAKA 10035
[ ] SHIRAI 1
[ ] SHIRAI 2

What?

[ ] Move to a different location.

[ ] Fire at an enemy.

[ ] Take an overwatch position.

[ ] Suppress an enemy (MISAKAs only)

[ ] Use an esper ability.

[ ] Use an equipment item.

[ ] Special: Attack the Signal Jammer! (100% chance to hit, ??? to destroy)
-[ ] If destroyed: the XCOM team gains security camera feed access for the remainder of the mission.

[ ] Special: Attempt to hack the Signal Jammer! (MISAKA units only; success chance based on WILL and contextual factors)
-[ ] Major Success: Signal Jammer's effects are reversed, disrupting enemy communications and giving the XCOM team security camera feed access. (WILL + 1d100 >= 120)
-[ ] Minor Success: Signal Jammer is disabled for five turns, giving the XCOM team security camera feed access for that duration. (120 > WILL + 1d100 >= 90)

-[ ] Minor Failure: The hack attempt fails, maintaining jamming effects and preventing XCOM from attacking another hack for three turns. (90 > WILL + 1d100 >= 70)
-[ ] Major Failure: The hack attempt sends the jammer haywire, disabling all XCOM communications for one turn. That is, one round of combat occurs off-screen with no player inputs. (70 > WILL + 1d100)

Oh hey, fun.

Alright so... WILL is 50 ATM.

50<70 so Major Failure is possible :(

Minor Success needs 40 or higher to get.
Major Success needs 70 or higher to get.

I.e 60, and 30 % chances respectively.

Minor success doesn't seem really worth it compared to just destroying it though outside of giving us a second chance to try for a major success perhaps at a better success rate?

I'm thinking we have a Misaka blast it, and a SHIRAI Telefrag the aliens to soften em up.

To hack o not to hack, that is the question.

I suggest going for it and praying to Tzeentch all the while having our other units overwatch by the door.

Perhaps some encouraging words would increase our chances? Like, tell the girls that they'll get hugs and ice cream after the mission. Children like hugs and icecream, yes?

Or we can steal the thing and dismantle it for science reasons.

I think we shoukd try to hack, with standing orders to assume defensive posture and suppressive fire if we cut off. One round of turtling and overwatch is acceptable.

...wait a minute, how big is it? Can it be hauled? Salvaging one intact would be very valuable.

The jamming device is roughly the size of one of the plasma bombs from council missions in Enemy Unknown. While you can't just pick it up and carry around, it can be recovered as spoils from the mission if it is not destroyed.

Ah, okay.

Definitely want to study an intact one, so we can deal with future ones better.

Recap of situation:
Shirai 01 - Inside building, at device
Shirai 02 - At door, device there
Misaka 10033 - Overwatch at door. Has visual of enemies. Under fire
Misaka 10035 - Overwatch at door

[X] Shirai 01 - Secure building interior. Identify alternate access points(windows, doors, stairs) and overwatch. If contact is lost with command, get in position to cover alternate entrances better. Use Telefrag grenade if they can hit at least two enemies at once.
[X] Shirai 02 - Secure building interior. Identify alternate access points(windows, doors, stairs) and overwatch. If contact is lost with command, get in position to cover alternate entrances better. Use Telefrag grenade if they can hit at least two enemies at once.
[X] Misaka 10035 - Suppress an enemy. If contact is lost with command, take cover after 10033 provides suppressive fire and assume overwatch over main entrance or any alternate entrances.
[X] Misaka 10033 - Take cover and move indoors after 10035 suppresses enemies. Attempt to hack the Signal Jammer. If contact is lost with command, assume defensive posture and support 10035 with suppressive fire next turn.

Since hacking notes "other factors", I decided to have 10035 do the hacking, since she has a clearer state of mind.

@Skarmory

Just to be sure: there's more than one Signal Jammer in the AO or is this the only one that the Squad can feasibly ship back to HQ after the Mission is done?

Because if there is more than one then we can destroy this Jammer and still have another that we can possibly disable and send back intact to be studied. There's at least 12-15 projected enemy combatants in this Op and we've only eliminated around 4 of them so far; not a good time to risk a Hack when our Squad is still outnumbered.

On the other hand, having the cameras online now would be pretty handy, since we're in a difficult position - under long range fire, but with no way of knowing if other enemies are lying in ambush if we rush forward.

Honestly, losing one turn is not devastating if we're smart about it. Just tell everyone to bunker up if we lose communication. We're not in the thick of it right now, I do genuilly believe we have more to win than to lose in this situation. Going in blind in our current position could be a disaster.

Gotta admit, I suck at strategic stuff. Only here for the story, which is fantastic by the way.
If I can suggest something, why not have both MISAKAs attempt to hack it? Like, say if 35 fails, 33 can attempt it. Or is that for the next turn?

It's just a matter of practicality. Last time we checked, 10035 was outside the building, covering a nearby alley. Plus, she's not feeling too well, right now, which might come with a WILL penalty. Since a failed attempt would trigger the negative effects anyway, doubling up doesn't seem to be worth it right now.

Unless using both clones to hack at the same time would increase the chances of success, @Skarmory ?

There is at least one additional jammer that the squad has not discovered. However, destroying this jammer will grant full use of the nearby security cameras up to the edge of the other jammer's AoE.

There's something to be said about too many cooks in the kitchen.

I think I would prefer that just one MISAKA attempt to hack at once. Things would get confusing otherwise.

Thank you. In that case:

[X] ALL UNITS: If contact with HQ is lost, assume defensive positions inside the building.
[X] SHIRAI 01: Destroy Signal Jammer. Move to cover and Overwatch. Use Telefrag if it can hit more than one Alien.
[X] SHIRAI 02: Assist in destroying Signal Jammer if SHIRAI 01 cannot do so alone. Move indoors to cover and Overwatch. Use Telefrag if it can hit more than one Alien.
[X] MISAKA 10033: Take cover until Aliens stop firing. Move indoors once alien fire stops and Overwatch/Suppress.
[X] MISAKA 10035: Take cover indoors and move up to suppress Aliens shooting at MISAKA 10033. If Aliens disengage, Overwatch.

We can risk a Hack on that other Jammer later, but right now we have two unknown X-Rays shooting at us.

At long range, while our units are in cover, especially once the MISAKAS move inside. They'd need to get closer to hit anything

Failed hacks prevent hacking for several turns.

That's what my vote was for. Establish moving inside the building and turtling for a turn if the hack goes bad.

There are still other Aliens running around, not necessarily just the two that shot at MISAKA 10033, and we're not sure where those are. We can't assume that more won't join the party.

And if we attempt the Hack and get a Failure, of which there's a 40 percent chance since a MISAKA's Will is around 50 without the additional 1d100, it will only exacerbate what problems we do have now. Especially if it's a Major Failure.

We agree on that, but we're drawing different conclusions from it.

In my opinion, that factors makes it all the more important that we attempt the hack. Because a successful attempt should reduce, or even prevent any nasty surprise when we move in to deal with the two shooters, which we will have to do at some point.

On the other hand, having our coms jammed during one turn isn't such a big deal if we assume a defensive position. Cover+overwatch is the easiest tactic to implement, and should be enough against any additional hostiles that might show up to assault our position.

Well I certainly wouldn't gamble on it personally, but that's just me.

It's why we have the Votes anyway and I'm inclined to go for a more cautious approach than the currently leading vote.

I'll go with

[X] Plan Veekie

AKA

[X] Shirai 01 - Secure building interior. Identify alternate access points(windows, doors, stairs) and overwatch. If contact is lost with command, get in position to cover alternate entrances better. Use Telefrag grenade if they can hit at least two enemies at once.

Can someone update the map?

could they still have a line of fire if we move to the right corner of the building? we can possibly suppress the two unknown X-rays and move to the right outside corner, or is that to much of a risk? but the again, the signal jammer could prove to be the undoing of my suggestion, and if so, It could be possible to do this next turn.

Has the story moved or is it still going on in this particular thread?

Edit: I've seen in other quests that there is titles to plans, can we apply that system to here to make it easier to vote?

Destroying the signal jammer might take a while. Unless it's like the deactivate feature like the bomb nodes, so we might have to focus on the aliens first then the signal jammer, and besides, the signal jammer can work as cover.

(I dare ask this question, but... is anyone else going to continue this story or what? a quest can't go on with one person.)
