Your name is Yamato Nagai.
You have just asked your brother what the motivation behind him spending so much time getting stronger was.
And, as you expected, it is not an easy question for him to answer.
As of now he is doing what he usually does whenever he has to come face to face with a difficult question.
First, he looks up at the sky.
Then his eyes, usually so confident and sure of purpose, cloud over with doubt. His eyebrows furrow to signify that he's thinking of an answer. His body begins rocking left and right as he weighs the implications of the different answers he could give.
Watching him contemplate about this makes the deep feeling of shame lodge itself in your gut even further. You know that Hayato wasn't thinking of this at all. He was asked to help people he likes and respects succeed in a tasks that they believed only he could. It makes sense that he would choose to help them regardless of how much time it would take out of his own life. That he could focus his all on ensuring he didn't fail the people who placed their expectations on him.
Of course such a circumstance wouldn't remain outside the Raijin "Rumor Mill" as the students named it. The Sole Participant position is, after all, a position specifically for students that are considered prodigies. Special cases able to excel in all three Martial Arts offered by the school, that will be representing their entire school in a coming competition? That is bound to become a topic of discussion among high schoolers with little to do after classes get out.
There are those who praise him for being so brave, others who feel inspired by his status as a prodigy, and others who are excited to see what he can do at the Tournament.
But there are also those who hate him in-spite of it all. Who say that he didn't get the position legitimately. That he is simply too much of a fool to represent the school in such a intricate competition. And yet others who downplay the Tournament itself, all as an excuse to put down your brother's accomplishments. One example that stayed with you happened when your mathematics class let out. A group of female students began openly mocking the idea of your brother participating in the Tournament. They laughed at the very idea of the "lesser students" competing in such a "vulgar practice" at all. You believe one suggested that they call the entire Tournament off so that Hayato won't "embarrass the school with his ape-like appearance". Before saying that he would fit right in with all the other participants.
Then they followed you out of the classroom when you were done packing your things. They proceeded to attempt to invite you to a get together they were planning after school. Unaware of the fact that you had already begun ignoring everything they said before they were even out the room.
They had the unmitigated gall to-
You calm yourself. No getting angry. If Hayato finds out your angry, he'll worry. Then he won't stop worrying until he confront's whatever made you angry.
It's good to know that he would worry for you. But you don't want him to do that because he has his own problems he needs to handle. You can't get in the way of that.
Besides, it's not necessarily what the girls said that bothered you.

You understand why they do it. They don't see him, nor those like him, as their equal. They see themselves as better than him by virtue of some arbitrary circumstance of their birth. They have been both raised to believe this, and had that way of thinking ingrained in their minds by years of their parents and peers affirming it. It is only logical that they would think that way.
No, that didn't bother you.
What bothered you was how so many of them would insult your brother while your back was turned.
Munagi and those around her being the exceptions, the vast majority of the Raijin student body held little love for anyone who had come to the school on a scholarship. They made no secret of this. You've seen students of the more physical focused Clubs receiving jeers as they walked down the halls. Hayato has as well, though he usually does something to make them stop. Normally by just existing in the general area. Beating up Yunagi and getting his punishment rescinded seems to have put some of these students on edge around him. But, when he is not around the jeering continues unabated.
And these people? They are the ones who tend to seek you out.
Strangely enough, the majority of them are women. And they all seem to wish to cling to you like Yameko does. Perhaps the soap you use to bathe is particularly attractive to the opposite sex? Whatever the case they try to seduce, entice, and trick you into forming some manner of union with them.
You tried with them like Hayato suggested. You have tried to get along with them. To form some kind of bond with them.
But usually the first thing they ask about is your brother. At which point you begin telling them about how he is an exceptional individual and that you love him dearly.
Then you pretend to leave and wait to hear their response to your words.
And, always, it's the same.
Glowing praises for you and your intellect.
Nothing but condemnation for Hayato.
And thus you cut those people out of your life. You don't need them.
Even if it puts you at odds with the rest of the school, so be it. You don't care. As long as your brother is there, everything will be fine.
"Well, I suppose I did it to protect others."
You focus back on your brother. You were so caught up in your thoughts that you missed the tell-tale signs of him coming to a conclusion. First, he gives you a radiant smile that glows brighter than the sun itself. Then, his hands close into fists to signify that this is his final answer. Lastly, he nods to himself to confirm that he is 100% certain of his course of action.
"As I expected," you say. Your voice is calm, monotonous, and droning. But, truly, you feel the shame inside you disappear and be replaced with pride at your brother's decision.
Hayato smiles, "Figures you would. You know me so well."
You nod, "Indeed. However, could you still explain exactly why that was your choice?"
"Well," he looks back at his hands, "To tell you the truth...that's what I think about whenever I train. I think about fighting for others. I think about the raid and how I fought to keep the students of Raijin safe. I think of how I fought Ritsuko because she started threatening you. I think of when we jumped in to save Munagi from those Kirin assholes. I think of all those jerks I punched out in the streets for trying to mug people."
He places his hands on his knees. Then he looks up at the sky, "But mainly, I think about you. I think about when we were kids. How you'd get bullied, chased, and attacked for being smarter than everyone else. How I'd get so mad at those guys. How I'd rush in there and just start punching. At everything and everyone that wasn't you. If they weren't involved, they were let go. Everyone else got hit. But...but I didn't do it to hurt them. That was part of it, sure. But I mainly wanted to make sure you were ok. It's why I always came to your side. Everytime. That's why I fought back then. And it's my reason for doing it now."
He sighs then shakes his head, "I know things won't stay this easy forever. Something's gonna come along and make us have to start taking things seriously. Whether it's the Organization assholes, those Kirin fucks looking for revenge, or some shit we can't even see coming. But it's gonna hit us. And when it does, I want to make sure I'm strong enough to protect others. To protect this school. Protect Hose, Ritsuko, Seteke, Sakura, Yameko, Munagi...but most importantly, you."
He finishes with another dazzling smile directed right at you.
.....
Your brother is amazing.
He can do no wrong.
He is the only person in the world that matters.
No one else.
No one else.
No one else.
......
"I....understand," you say with another nod, "A noble aspiration. And one that I expected of you."
You turn you attention back to the book in your hand. You already have an idea for what you will do going forward.
[Trickery: 102]
If your brother wishes to protect others, then he will stand in the light. He will be the focal point of everyone's attention. He will be the Hero. The one that others will rally behind.
But that you know your brother.
And you know he will not have the stomach to do what it takes when the less...savory parts of being a Hero come into play.
So, that's what you will-

"And you're gonna be right there beside me."
....What?
Worked on this for two days. I hope everyone enjoyed.
It's not the end, of course.
But I wanted to get this in, and also show off a bit of exactly how far Yamato's love for Hayato goes.
And why it's both admirable...and a little scary.
Oh, and you thought this was low on Shounen Speeches then get ready for next time.
Edit: Oh, and another look into their past.
