Yeah we don't know if that vision was actually Ophiel, or just the monster messing with our mind - it wouldn't be the first time. Like that line it dropped "I can only appear before you, girl" and the fact that only we fall into trances from those whistles. It may be connected in some other way, but still...

So these 40 pages took a lot a longer then I expected but i'm here. @TheLordofAwesome your references and writing are on point I had been craving a quest like this so A+. Also I think I have an Idea of what the whistling is or at least it remind me of something but i'll keep to myself for now~

Also I wonder if Enoch/Metatron would have been a better choice for traitor detection, cause voice of god and all that. To show someone's true voice or something along those lines but it would of been less discreet.

Welcome, welcome! I am glad you have enjoyed what you've seen so far! I am curious as to what you think the whistling is but I'll let you discuss that with your fellow players in your own time. :3

Well I know what it is, but I don't know what's its name if that makes sense. Like I've definitely encountered similar things before in different shows and books, I just need to rack my brain cause it seems awfully familiar.....but i could be wrong.

Also I don't know if it was intended, but I may or may not have scared myself when I saw the quest name out of the corner of my eye and thought it said Nylathotep instead.

Well, I hope you think about it. ;)

Lol

I have finally finished the backlog of the quests I participate in, and am back.

This is an interesting development, and it would be a pretty great one if there is some actual personal conflict involved rather than an attempt by poorly disguised enemy to sow discord in our ranks. One does not need to betray to seek harm to another, in fact there sometimes are actions that one takes for the sake of another that are perceived as betrayal. The complexity of human relationships is what makes them so interesting to read about.

I'd rather prefer to think of Orphiel's warning as a real thing. Makes me more confident in the writing that way. And her feelings for us... could that be part of the motivation?

What was the exact wording, anyway, without Medea filling in the details with imagination? 'One of the companions seeks to betray you'. Not to harm, but to betray. If, say, Sierra was planning on feeding Eli, Dani and Lucas to Cthulhu so that she and Sierra may leave intact, I am pretty sure it would qualify for betrayal.

By the way, what are Maxwell's goals again? To get back the key Rachel hid, and be freed, right? That's what Orphiel was sent to prevent, and the reason he contracted us, no? He would certainly care about that more than anything else, and regard any actions that would help Maxwell as hostile*. Could Sierra be threatened with our life to pressure her into surrendering the key once we find it? I am more inclined to think that than anything else.

* He may have a point here, even - why would Maxwell keep any of his promises if he gets what he wants without anything to leash him? Giving up the key to be spared might seem like a lesser evil, but it has a great likelihood to doom us all regardless.

We're thrown in a situation where we have no idea what is going on, with danger around every corner. Add to that the fact that we're flailing around wildly with the magic that might indeed be our true way free, and it really puts us in the same spot as Medea.
Well, at least part of it is self-inflicted. ChildishChimera has been trying to propose an idea for a spell that would let us stop flailing blindly and regain some measure of direction and purpose for at least two updates now. He even gave the chant and the Archangel's name. I don't care what it takes - I don't know, channel Chamuel; or Raziel, the Keeper of Secrets; or sacrifice a litter of kittens, or do a voodoo dance, - but I believe this spell would be critical to our understanding of what we should do next. Because one of our major goals is to reunite with Eli and Dani before something happens to them, or confirm their deaths. I don't think any true progress can be made on escaping while their fate is uncertain and their lives leveraged against us.

Hello I've been catching up on this quest. I have a few questions.

Why does everyone want to leave? Two of Medea's friends are still missing? Going back there is a priority. Why hasn't anyone gather weapons yet, its the basic survival of a horror movie.

1. Is it possible to use magic to control the scientific laws, like create a rail gun, gain access to the internet, molecular manipulation?

2. Is it possible for Medea to upsurp the main villain and become the Dark Queen and rule benevolently?

3. Is finding the whistler, defeating him, and interrogating him viable? If so Can Medea actually defeat the Whistler?

4. How many players are there? How many factions are here right now? Can Medea graduate from pawn to Queen or Player?

5. Is invoking fictional deities like, the Valar of lord of the rings possible? deities from different myths such as Romans, Greeks, Budhism, Christianity,? nondeities such as authors of fictional works? Fictional rituals?

6. Is dousing viable, using a locket to find someone on a map?

7. This magic system, the more spells Medea create, the easier, time she has to create more right? Can she improve existing spells?

8. Is calling the spirits of the dead possible, such as the aquaintance of Lucas? necromancy?

We dont think that they will have survived this long as they dont have any magic and dont have us who has google and a long time to think about what we are going to do so we are kinda hyper competent. And we have not realy found any good weapons and I dont think that they are realy going to be that good its going to be magic which saves us in combat.

1. Is it possible to use magic to control the scientific laws, like create a rail gun, gain access to the internet, molecular manipulation?

These things sounds realy complicated so I doubt that we could pull it of, as a rail gun would shrek most things. Acces to the internet will not give us that much as I doubt that they have any good info about this and I doubt that the QM will let us send for help as it migth break the game. And molecular manipulation is way to OP for us we could either make ourself next to indestructible or just oneshot everything.

you don't know that, and until that its been proven that their dead, its better to search for them, and search for clues about whats going on.

This place is a death trap its full of dangerous traps and monsters I am not even sure if we can survive this place that much longer. We are not soldiers we are just a bunch of teens I and the mental health of the people around us seems to be in doubt so I am not sure how long that they can take the fear of death.

We are working on the assumption our friends are trying to leave too... but yeah, I am all for trying and locate them, with magic if need be.

Now, some guesswork. No one but GM knows how this works, but here are my musings.

1) Magic produces some kind of effect desired by the user, and for that, the effect needs to be understood at the very least. Which to me suggests that we'd have to have a good grasp on scientific laws before we try to control them, know the insides of the rail gun to produce it, etc. On the other hand, who needs a railgun if you can shoot POW RAYS to the same effect, and they are way easier to conceptualise? You probably don't need to know how gravity works to imagine flight either.

The good question would be if we could enchant items so that others could use our magic. The cloth implies so, but I think the more complex the effect, the more risky it'll get.

2) Maxwell isn't the ruler - he seems to be a prisoner here and possibly a slave to the Old Gods. Medea isn't likely to supplant one of those, and I'd rather not become trapped in these woods for eternity, no matter how cozy the dungeon may seem.

3) Killing him, perhaps. Getting close enough to incapacitate and capture him, especially with the only mage weak to his subversive effects? Highly unlikely.

4) As far as factions go, I count five: Maxwell and whomever he serves, Orfiel and whoever he recruits, the weird goverment organisation, the protagonists, and various unaligned neutrals/captives/denizens/whatever that are caught in the fighting.

5) You could try... But it would be wiser to operate within the mythologies that already have been presented. One spell gone wrong could be the end of us, and you probably don't want to invoke a wrong name when casting.

6) Hopefully! I have made an argument in its favor already!

I may have a plan to capture the whistler, but finding everyone is a priority first, it involves earplugs, especially for Sierra, she did lied, setting a trap, ambushing him, overwhelming him with magic or mundane methods, being adequately knowledgable in magic, understanding some scientific laws (glue, amber, cement to keep him from moving) so he can't counter everything Medea throws at him, some binding circles, sealing magic circles, maybe a oath of the whistler using his powers for self defense (escape from capture, not counted) purpose only and even then only nonlethal and if the whistler's attackers are actually trying to kill him. Maybe then we can understand what exactly is going on, who is committing the murders. Finding Rachel (the goverment witch agent ) is also viable.

1. who is the uncanny human that Lucas and Medea were hiding from? Is he sentient, if so, maybe interrogating him is viable?

2. I assume the goverment can't be good, since they kill witnesses?

3. Unlimited spell casting is ok right?, there is no Mp limit for Medea?

4. Creating as many weak level spells would be advantageous right? It will make Medea stronger?

5. How viable is it for Medea to find her friends, send them home, stay here herself, to solve this crisis?

I would feel much better if the plan involved earplugs.

Also, the Whistler didn't say a word, not once. I am not even sure he can communicate outside of his weird whistling-induced space.

More power to you if you think you can make it work, but I don't see people voting for the idea.

Chapter 46: The Mine
[x] Take a moment to talk with your friends to get their input on the situation. (Another action may be taken)
-[x] The being who helped me get my power gave me a warning and now I want to cast a spell to detect ill intent and where it's coming from. I'm hoping that can be condensed into one ritual/spell.
-- [x] If they approve, cast the spell.

[x] Cast a Spell - Detect Malicious Intent
-[X] Call out to "Michael." The name of the Archangel of protection, mercy, and justice.
-[X] Incant "Locate and show those that would seek to harm me." Empower the spell.

[X] Go through the unblocked tunnel.

Thinking on it, you realize that perhaps you should take heed of Orphiel's warning. You don't want to believe it, but you can't pretend it didn't happen and ignore it. Still, you doubt that Sierra or any of your friends would want to harm you. But, you have one option in order to determine if you are in danger. Sierra and Lucas may not like it, but if you explain things to them they'll probably understand.

"Alright guys, listen up. I've got to tell you something." You look to each of them as they look at you expectantly. Right, moment of truth. "So remember how I said I just woke up with my ability to use magic?"

"Yeah?" They both replied simultaneously.

"Well, uh, before I woke up I had this... dream." You weren't really sure how to explain this to them, frankly it sounded crazy even to you, but you have to do your best. "In it I was giving this power from this thing that called itself 'Orphiel' and-"

"The heck kind of name is 'Orphiel'?" Lucas interrupts, but soon shuts his mouth when you lower a glare int his direction.

"'Orphiel' is another name for Phanuel."

You and Lucas both blink, turning your heads to Sierra's direction, who stood holding her chin as she looked upward in thought.

"Phanuel is an archangel," she explained. "One of the four that stand before God, alongside the angels Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel. His name means 'the face of God', and he is the archangel of repentance and hope." She finally looked down, looking at the expressions one both your face and Lucas' as the two of you stare at her in silent awe and confusion. "What?"

"How do you know all that?" Lucas asks.

"I was raised Catholic." She shrugged as she buried her hands into the pockets of her ruined jeans. "My parents are super-religious and sort of hammered in pretty much any information related to our faith into my head since I was old enough to learn." She gives Lucas a questioning look. "Is that weird?"

"No, no, it's cool." Lucas replied, giving her a smile. "Just didn't think you were the religious type is all."

"Guys, hate to interrupt, but mind if I continue?" You chime in. The two of them look to you, Lucas giving you an apologetic look while Sierra mouthed a silent "sorry" to you. You clear your throat and continue, "So, this being gave me this power. Then I woke up. At first I just thought they were dreams, but it, Orphiel, it came to me just a few moments ago and... then I knew it was real." You take a deep breathe, preparing yourself to continue. "It gave me a warning, and now I want to cast a spell to detect ill intent and where it's coming from."

You hope that was enough to convince them. You really hope they won't try an ask what exactly it was that Orphiel said to you. You look to Sierra, eyeing her stoic expression, thinking to yourself that you there was no way she'd do anything to hurt you. But if you were to tell them what happened with Orphiel... what would she say? What would Lucas say? If she cared about you, she'd tell the truth. But if the truth is what Orphiel claimed it to be, would she even say it?

"Alright, so, let me get this straight," You are snapped back to reality as Lucas speak up. "You got touched by angel, turned into the Merlin, then later they showed up to you, gave a vague warning and peaced out. And now you want to use your hocus pocus to follow up on said vague warning. Is that about right?"

"Err... yeah?"

He blinks a couple times, giving you a half-smile as he folds his arms. "You know... If you said that to literally anybody else, you'd probably be told you were crazy." You grimaced somewhat at that, to which Lucas chuckles a little. "Whatever man. I trust you enough to believe you. I mean, I've seen some shit today so whatever."

"Same here." Sierra nods. "If you think it will help make sure we aren't in danger, then I say go ahead and do it. Just be careful, Medea."

You smile at the two of them. "Thanks, guys." You say. "It means a lot that you trust me."

"Medea, you've been my best friend since middle school. After all we've been through together, how could I not trust you?" Sierra reasoned.

You frown slightly at that. As you recall she didn't trust you enough to tell you what was wrong back when this all started going down, and you had to practically force her to tell you what was wrong back in the old man's cabin. You suppose it she did it to try and protect you, but it still seems like there was a lack of trust then. Of course, it doesn't matter now. What's past is past. You don't have to bring it up to her and start a whole bunch of drama while you're all in danger.

"Anyway, I'm going to do another ritual to ensure this spell works." You explain.

"Are you going to take your shirt off again?" Lucas inquires, eyebrow raised.

You turn to stare at him, giving him a blank look as you stared at him in silence for a few second before commenting with a blunt "No."

He clicks his tongue, a look of disappointment graces his features. "Dammit..."

Sierra's swings her arm in his direction without looking, her hand impacting his gut with a dull 'thump'. Lucas gasps, bending over as his arms quickly cover his belly on reflex. "Pig..." Sierra groans out in annoyance.

"Oh, like you are one to judge..." Lucas wheezed before Sierra punched him in the shoulder. "Ow! The hell, Sierra?!"

"Lucas Abernathy..." She growled through gritted teeth. "Shut. The FUCK. Up."

You sighed and rolled your eyes at the two of them. If you weren't in a life or death situation you'd allow them to continue their antics, but now is not the time. You better get this over with. You hold out your hand, closing your eyes as you do so. You breathe in and out, focusing the power through you. You picture the spell in your mind's eye, imagining what you hoped to accomplished. But it might not be enough, you must ensure this spell will work. There was one way you could do that...

"Michael..." You whisper. "O Archangel of protection, mercy, and justice... Locate and show those that would seek to harm me."

The power courses through you, channeling to the palm of your hand. You see a light emanating from where your hand would be behind you closed eyes. It shines for but a moment before fading gradually until darkness. The sense of power slowly seeps away, the energies retreating back into your body from whence you called it from. Slowly you open you eyes once more...

"Did... it work?" Lucas asks, looking at you a bit worried.

You don't reply just yet, focusing your mind and... you feel... something. It is hard to describe, but you feel a sense of danger. Like your body's natural unconscious ability to detect danger, but turned up to eleven to detect danger that a moment ago it didn't register before. You knew you were in danger, but you also knew you were not in any immediate danger. The danger felt close, but how close you could not say.

"I... think so." You say, unsure. "I get a sense of danger, but I'm not picking up a source of that danger. Just that we are in danger. But, uh, not right away?"

"That's..." Sierra looks at you with an expressive that says she is trying to find the best way to describe her disappointment without hurting your feelings. "Not... very helpful...."

"Sorry..." You mutter apologetically, looking to the ground downcast. "I don't understand how this magic shit works. It isn't like Orphiel gave me a 'Magic For Dummies' book or anything..."

"Definitely should have hooked you up with that wisdom Solomon got as well." Sierra commented. "Probably would be helpful on understanding how it works."

"Maybe just a bit." Lucas nods in agreement. "Although hopefully it involves less chopping babies in half."

"He never chopped a baby in half..." Sierra muttered a correction to her male companion.

"So what now, Medea the White?" Lucas ask, smirking at his little joke.

You shrug. "Get moving, I guess."

You turn from them, facing towards the unblock tunnel of the mine, walking towards it. You had no idea where it would go but you didn't have much in the way of options.

"What if we run into a monster?" Lucas calls to you as you are putting some distance between you and them.

"Then we're fucked. Best not dawdle." Sierra replied, quickly joining your side, soon followed by Lucas as he runs up next to you as well.

The tunnel was pretty straightforward, with no real deviations that could be seen. You walk along the old derelict tracks that had rusted over, keeping an eye on your footing to avoid tripping. You gagged a little as you walked through the tunnel as a foul stench of mildew emanates off the wet stone walls of the mine tunnel. As you walked through the tunnel it seemed to get smaller, as if the tunnel was shrinking. Rocks, stalagmites, and stalactites that had formed over an untold amount of decades appearing in greater frequency as you moved forward through the abandoned mine, forcing Lucas and Sierra to line up behind you just keep going. Eventually you reached the end of the tunnel, happening upon a small chamber.

The chamber was floor, as water was mere inches away from your feet as it pooled up on the ground. You couldn't tell how deep the water was as it was dark and murky. Looking around you saw two paths, one directly ahead of you and the other to the left. You looked over your shoulder to your friends as they lined up behind you, trying to look over you to see into the chamber. Lucas seemed to struggle to peer past you and Sierra, despite his height as he was forced to crouch down somewhat to avoid smacking his head. Sierra, peered at the water nervously, her stare never wavering from it as you notice her hands balling into fists. Briefly you wonder what could make her react this way, but you probably figured she was just worried about how deep it might be. You once heard that cave rivers were practically death traps, so if this pool of water was anywhere as deep you could be in real trouble.

Still, you need to keep moving and decided to...

[ ] Keep going forward.

[ ] Go down the tunnel to you left.

[ ] Go back.
-[ ] Go up the ladder.
-[ ] Go through the blocked tunnel

[ ] Cast a spell - Write In (Secondary action may be taken)

[X] Stay as far away from the water as you can, be sure that no monsters can attack you from a vulnerable position, from your party's sides and rear.
[X] Talk to both Sierra and Lucas, all of us should stop running around like headless chickens, we need to find everyone. Magic is now a necessity for finding your friends. But first something to defend ourselves will be needed, then tracking down our friends will be ok.
[X] Tell them to gather any objects that may be helpful in your magic, either as defense or offensive uses, so you can enchant them.

[X] Defensive fire spell to drive away or incapacitate, but not to kill unless absolutely necessary. The fire spell can also be generated, and controlled by the user both in melee or ranged. In christianity or Catholic, angels are capable of calling out fire and sometimes the fire is harmless.
-[x] use a torch as the object
-[x] use your blood both as a symbol of life, for fire is life and to inscribe the symbol of oxygen in chemistry and Michael, plus a cross that symbolizes protection (life guard, red cross or something )
-[x] chant out "Michael , O Archangel of protection, mercy, and justice, please send out your heavenly flames, protect us from harm, may you show both friend and foe mercy, for I seek only to protect, and defend, not to murder , may no permanent harm or unnecessary death come upon friend or foe"
-[x] blow your breath across the top of torch, and scratch it across the a cave wall or something to generate friction.
    [X] Go back.
[x] stay as far away from the water as you can, be sure that no monsters can attack you from a vulnerable position, from your party's sides and rear.
[x] Talk to both Sierra and Lucas, all of us should stop running around like headless chickens, we need to find everyone. So backtracking is necessary to a extent, to plan again and finally be proactive. Magic is now a necessity for finding your friends. But first something to defend ourselves will be needed, then tracking down our friends will be ok.
[x] get their confirmation of how to go back to the obsidian, either by the ladder or the unblocked tunnel, where you pass through the obsidian.
[x] tell them to gather any objects that may be helpful in your magic, either as defense or offensive uses, so you can enchant them. Grab any extra torches, stop if it will plunge the area in darkness, just in case any other survivors will need the light.
[x] Stay at the area where you met Oriphel or Phanuel
[x] Go down the tunnel to you left.
    -[X] Cast a spell - Light
