"Kazuki," you remembered the moment, your voice as calm as his had been when he'd sat you down a few weeks prior. You might not know exactly where you wanted to go, but now you knew the start, at least.
"You've made your choice, then." He said, and you nodded firmly. You'd made it the night of the new year, looking out as lights shone and sparked on the water and sky. Fireworks were still the celebratory tradition of choice, and the bursts of coloured light had been almost soothing in their beauty.
"New Years," you replied, cocking your head at grin that blossomed across his face. "What?"
"Oh nothing," he chuckled, "I just owe Marcus a composition." You blinked, what was he getting a- it clicked.
"You bet on how long it would take?" The laughter behind the words made a lie of the outrage on your face. "You're terrible!"
"Would you really have it any other way?" He asked, and you shook your head through the last of your laughter. "Didn't think so. Although you might be happy to know that Mary didn't bet. Something about not betting on a friend."
"That sounds like her," you said softly, the laughter in your voice fading into a deep affection. "She was happy when I told her, you know."
"You chose to step down, then?" From more than a few others, that might have prompted a biting reaction, but strangely not from Kazuki. At least not today, when he said it like that. "None of us were going to say it, but we've seen how the last two years have started to wear on you. Twelve years is a long time to lead and the only other President who led for that long did so during the Time of Miracles. This has been a very different Presidency."
"Ain't that the truth." If your Second Secret biomods hadn't made it almost impossible, you were convinced that your hair should have been silver at least two years ago. If nothing else, facing a Shiplord in hand to hand combat should have done the trick. "But you're right. Part of me still wants to stay, but it's time to step aside," you sighed, not wanting to admit the next words, but forcing yourself anyhow. "Before it gets harder to let go."
"I understand." Kazuki said, and looking up at him you found with some shock that you believed him.
:I told you,: Sidra slid the words into your mind, glimmering in their shell around your neck.
:You keep on forgetting who he was before he joined your government, don't you.:
:I think I might be about to get some help with that,: you sent back, but it wasn't a deflection. You had forgotten, and even after being reminded once you still found it hard to remember. You weren't the only one who had suffered the privilege of mass adoration.
"I won't bore you with details," the former singer continued, "but knowing that what you do will always be heard is a powerful thing. The ability to shape society, effect change, it's hard to lay that down. Especially when you've spent so long being so successful at it."
"Leading is a drug," you said, and he nodded slowly, recognising his own words from two and a half decades past. "It takes so much, but you'll never want to let it go."
"To captain a world is wonder," he sang gently, "and the greatest of burdens I know." The click of a chip on the table between you broke the sudden silence that followed, and he slid it out towards you. "These are the more detailed files that I'm sure you guessed I had, I used the last few weeks to refine them." He tapped it with an immaculate fingernail. "In there are the compiled suggestions and possibilities from every member of your cabinet, although if I've done my job right it shouldn't be obvious who came up with them. Read it, and think on it, like you did with the last one. We'll be ready for whatever your decision might be at the next cabinet meeting."
You reached out and took the chip, then past it to catch his hand, squeezing gently as you caught his eyes with your own. "Thank you, Kazuki." The words were short, but they came from the heart. It was the same thank you you'd given him after the last concert you'd held with him, and you were glad to see he recognised it. There weren't any words, but after so long working together, you could read his eyes.
"Madame President."
He'd given you a song for each path, now you had to choose which one to sing.
[] Freedom Rain: You'd had your time in the sun, and paid the dues of exposure. You'd never be able to escape from that, not after everything you'd done, but that didn't mean you couldn't have peace. You might not be able to keep it forever, but the freedom to be nothing more than a Potential again could be a blessing. To have the time to go back to go back to the Circles, the family of blood and bonds that you'd neglected so much during your time as President, and so much more.
Benefits: Fewest Responsibilities, Guaranteed Peace (for a while), Heart of Circles, Lots Of Tinkering Time, Extensive Opportunities For Personal Growth
Drawbacks: Lowest Available Connections, Soft Power, Possible Clearance Issues, Retreat From Politics
[] Tongues of Gold: Of course, you could seek a place of no small power within the structures you'd come to know, but without sacrificing as much freedom as you'd done so as President. Accept the light, learn to withstand it, and carve out a place for yourself inside it. You'd have to work for one of the two seats you could take at the table, but that was within your capabilities.
Benefits: Low Responsibility, Legislative Leverage, Connections, Voice of Experience, Best Opportunity For Public And Political Growth
Drawbacks: Least Peace, Moderate Freedom, Two Is A Hard Number, You Aren't A Politician
[] Ever Present: The skills you'd honed over your life would make you an excellent choice for any Ministry, but to limit you like that was foolish in the eyes of your Cabinet. There was another option, however; to be a Minister without Ministry. To fade from the light, but not leave it behind, and maintain a place within the world that had become your own the last twelve years.
Benefits: Effective Freedom, Cabinet Connections, Ministerial Office, Blank Check, Surrounded By Talent
Drawbacks: High Responsibility, Troubleshooter, Technical Subordinate, Moderate Peace
[] The World's Lover: Finally, there was an option that drew you deeply, but that you weren't sure if you should follow. Your passion for understanding the intricacies of the world was all but without limit, and there was a way to allow you to pursue that. One that would bring your closest friends with you, and allow you to chart your own path into the light of reason.
Benefits: Considerable Resources, High Peace, Research Actions, Charting The Future, Mary
Drawbacks: Low Connections, Moderate Freedom, Moderate Responsibility, Least Legislative Influence
