-[X] Kori activates the Glibness power of his bracers to gain a +20 Bluff bonus for the next 70 minutes. The Drow holds a great deal of information in his head which could prove valuable, but he isn't likely to share it if he believes doing so won't spare his life.
--[X] "Even if you do not worship the Blood Marquis, your hands are still stained with the blood of untold innocents. If you wish to save yourself, you will tell us everything we want to know. Prove that you can be useful enough to justify the risk of leaving you alive, and share enough that you can never hope to return to Zirnakaynin or any other Drow stronghold for fear of the repercussions for your betrayal, and arrangements will be made to secure your continued existence. We will cast spells upon you to aid us in this. You will allow the spells to take hold, or you will be slain. If you are untruthful, you will be slain. Do you agree?" Sirim will provide Aid Another assistance with Kori's Bluffing.
---[X] If he accepts, Kori will use Shadow Enchantment to cast a Suggestion Spell on him with instructions to truthfully answer our questions to the best of his ability, then use his headband to cast Detect Thoughts on the Drow to monitor his surface thoughts throughout the interrogation.
---[X] If the Drow refuses, Cob will render him unconscious. In this case, we will resort to the alternative; While he is unconscious, Mina will use her Evil Eye Hex to penalize his saving throws by -2 followed by casting an Ill Omen spell to force bad rerolls on him, then Sirim's Shadow Enchantment Suggestion and Kori's Detect Thoughts before waking him up for interrogation. Mina will try to use her Fortune Hex to help them overcome the Drow's Spell Resistance for their Ill Omen and Shadow Enchantment spells, if she is able. If the Drow resists the Suggestion attempt, Gorok will kill him.
---[X] Throughout this process, Mina will observe using Detect Magic to confirm that both spell effects have succeeded and that they remain in effect. If he chose not to cooperate and we had to try to overcome his resistance, Gorok will kill him if the Suggestion spell ends prematurely.
-[X] If the spells succeed, or we successfully cast Suggestion against his will, we will begin the interrogation.
---[X] How long has he been in Cassomir and what has he been doing here? Who are his contacts here and how did he meet them?
---[X] How many other Drow are in and below the city? What does he know of their assigned tasks and any plan they may have had? What does he know of the three-eyed Elf we discovered through Divination?
---[X] Did he receive additional instructions after coming to the surface? If so, how, when, and from whom?
---[X] Who is Marian Cicato and what are his dealings with them?
---[X] Does he have any safe houses or caches of supplies hidden in Cassomir or elsewhere? If so, where, what do they contain, and how are they protected?
--[X] What are his intentions if he is allowed to live? What does he plan to do when he eats his freedom? Will he seek revenge for his capture, or the death of his co-conspirators?
---[X] Who was his Matron and from which House does he originate? How long has it been since he left Zirnakaynin?
---[X] What does he know of the political situation in Zirnakaynin and the surrounding city-states, not only of the Drow but the Duergar and other people's as well? What Houses are ascendant and which are in decline? To which Demon Lords are they subservient?
---[X] After the interrogation, if the Drow refused to cooperate, he will be killed.
    -[X] Dealing with Skali:
--[X] If we haven't already explained exactly how we discovered the Drows' location, Sirim will quickly do so before we begin interrogating the prisoner, including how it required us to arrange the purchase of slaves as part of our cover. The meeting time to make the purchase is approaching and we have yet to fully recover from dealing with the Drow threat. Given the stakes involved and the danger of allowing potential worshipers of a Demon Lord to act unopposed, we cannot afford to delay the interrogation of our sole prisoner.
--[X] Ask that the governor temporarily employee Leontas' mercenaries to accompany a small contingent of his trusted personal guards and Sir Pisca to hurry out and deal with the slavers before they grow suspicious and leave with their victims in tow.
--[X] Sirim and Cob will tag along as well, remaining out of sight and ready to provide assistance if it proves necessary. Kori will cast a Bless and Invisibility spell into Cob's Ring of Spell Storing before they go.

    -[X] The slave deal:
--[X] Cob (disguised as a halfling) and Sirim leave for the where the trade is to take place as soon as Sirim finishes aiding Kori's Bluff attempt.
--[X] Cob casts Shadow Enchantment: Bestow Insight: Bluff from his ring on Sirim just before the meeting. The intent is to get time for a long rest and then go can rescue these slaves and kill (and loot) the slavers involved.
--[X] Excuse for why we need to delay: Sirim is sent as messenger: "My master's divinations suddenly gave dire omens for us; if your wares were to be purchased morning as previously intended, and I was sent as soon as they were able to confirm that window of peril closes twelve hours from now [i.e. time for long rest]. As you still procured the product in the time requested and the delay caused by needs of safety was no fault of yours, my master will pay you in full when we have inspected them, with a (small) consideration for the unexpected need to store the inventory for longer. My master is confident that your professionalism in this matter will show them that you will be a reliable supplier in the future."
--[X] Note: This slaver just lost his primary buyer, and if we're lucky then he has people watching the barge and has already recived word that it was attacked, and that a bunch of people trying to escape were killed. He's going to want a new income source.
--[X] Cob can provide a second pair of eyes in the area (but is not part of the conversation/is hidden from the slavers), though is primarily present with a Handy Haverstack to help Sirim escape if anything goes tits-up: If loosing the trail proves difficult, Sirim can enter Cob's bag, and Cob can teleport up to 100 ft, and use Alter Shape into a different form in order to loose any pursuers.

Through a Glass Darkly Seen

17th of Kuthona 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Deception is it's own kind of magic, it flows like song and rhymes like poetry in praise of trickster powers, which you invoke before kneading falsehood into truth: "Even if you do not worship the Blood Marquis, your hands are still stained with the blood of untold innocents. If you wish to save yourself, you will tell us everything we want to know. Prove that you can be useful enough to justify the risk of leaving you alive, share enough that you can never hope to return to Zirnakaynin or any other drow stronghold for fear of the repercussions for your betrayal, and arrangements will be made to secure your continued existence. We will cast spells upon you to aid us in this. You will allow the spells to take hold, or you will be slain. If you are untruthful, you will be slain. Do you agree?"

Akorian Bluff: 42
vs
Drow Sense Motive:
21

"Innocent... You realize I only know what that word means since learning Taldan? Something akin to both 'child' and 'ignorant', only with a positive connotation, yes?"

The governor looks taken aback for the first time since the drow had started speaking, but Mina simply picks up the thread of conversation in his own tongue.

"Ah, I see... closer to 'ritually pure'. So that is why so many cults raid the surface lands, or the settlements of the svirfneblin, for sacrifices, though you do not keep them that way for arcane reasons, but cultural? Fascinating. It's a pity you are probably still going to kill me after this." He turns back to you: "Work your magic then, I will not resist, in mind or body."

Once you had cast the enchantment upon him without a hitch as Sirim quickly poses to the governor the prospect of recovering some of the missing slaves while the deal with Skali still holds. After that the ghoulrunner himself can be taken into custody, hopefully cutting off a part of the corpse and eskelete trade.

The alchemist, who gives his name as Saenir with an air off familiar eerily courtesy, palms up to show he's not planning to poison anyone, explains that he's been in the city for some three months and his contact was a pockmarked man wearing a coiled serpent pendant, one you recognize at once, an Aspis agent. He'd been part of an expedition that delved as far as Zirnakaynin and even more impressively managed to not end up on a sacrificial altar. "That one isn't innocent, I can tell you that much for certain..." he laughs, all the more unnerving for how sincere it is despite the fact that he thinks himself inches from death. "I know they are buying poisons, reagents, and more recently even tomes of lores and lesser spells. Most of my fellow mages would say that even the least arts of the True Elves are beyond their meager dabblers, but then most of them are imbeciles who believe the flattery of tanar'ri and seek their company. For myself, I find the magics of this land strange, not lesser, constructed under different environments. One would not expect a bulette to swim in water, yes?"

"What's a bulette?" Bozbeyli asks.

After you explain he looks like he would almost rather you hadn't, but waves on for the elf to keep explaining.

"I had a very interesting conversation with one of the Consortium's medic/poisoners, but I have not spoken to them for months, much less the expedition leader. They deliver materials through the local flesh-peddlers. I brew the product and send it down with the guards you almost finished off at the Bloat and others like them. The posting has a high turnover rate since the servants of murder do not appreciate a task in which they are to avoid murdering, so as not to draw attention of the authorities." He nods towards the governor, still smiling. "That didn't work."

Though he only gets a deeper scowl in return his good cheer does not seem to fade. You're not sure what's more disturbing, that this is the effect of the enchantment or that it isn't.

"A handful of two of the blood guzzlers should be alive to cause trouble, and now with the mission compromised they will probably take it as license to indulge. Though if I were you I'd worry more about Elywa and her hive. She is an apostle of the Mother come to preach among the creatures of Nar Voth. The deal she made with the matron is simple, her children would secure the path and build up a presence below the city to ward away raiders as long as we do not blunder into her hive."

"Hive of what?" Gorok asks, a hunter's interest glittering in his eye.

"How should I know? Do I look like I've been chewed on recently? Those who wish to keep all their limbs and other extremities attached do not wander into a Lamashan hive uninvited."

"What if you are invited though?" You ask, remembering the hags. How are so many demon worshipers cooperating?

"Ah, that is the cue to start running," Saenir offers knowingly. Cob would have probably laughed at that one for being entirely true.

"Does this 'Elywa' have three eyes?" you ask instead.

"Yes... How did you? Did you kill her? On the off chance I'm not about to follow her, could I have some samples of her blood and bile? They are sure to contain unique humors for my studies."

"We're the ones asking the questions, elf," the governor interjects. "How do you know Marian Cicato?"

"The warlord, yes? It's actually quite amusing, our local suppliers brought in a man who had been knifed in the street to be processed along with the rest of the usual batch. I immediately recognized him as noble stock from the lack of marks, the condition of his teeth, dozens of signs really, though I pretended not to. I kept him a prisoner until I learned all I could of him and of this city. He was, I discovered, a bodyguard of a high noble with a taste for exotic bed partners, the noble that is, not the bodyguard. I sent him back with some flesh-shaping potions as a token of my esteem as well as an offer to meet and speak of affairs. You know how the steps in this dance are done, yes? He was quite horrified when I described my companions at first, though not so much that he wouldn't try to make use of it for his own ends. He agreed to kill the guards and provide me warding and documentation as an elf of the sun in exchange for information, as well as varied poisons and potions of recreational and practical use. I kept a list in my formula book."

Mina starts leafing through the book, a look of restrained revulsion on her face, but she nods to show the truth of the words.

"He claimed he wanted to kill the others publicly for political advantage during the visit of your princess so as to frame the local potentates of dealing with my kin."

"Information, what can you tell us of yourself, your house, the politics of Zirnakaynin...?" you ask, leaning close.

Saenir laughs. "How long do you have to listen? The answer to that question, out of date as it may be, could fill several books."

The governor takes that as his cue to depart, his walk somehow gaining an even more military gait. Off to deal with his rival, you suspect, though he does ask Mina to copy down that list of poisons and potions for him.

"If you live what would your plans be? Would you attempt to take revenge on us for capturing you?"

"Hmm... only if you decided to loot my equipment. Not the money, I can acquire more than that, but the equipment is irreplaceable now that I find myself an exile from Zirnakaynin."

"How much money does he...?" Pisca asks, looking just a bit embarrassed by his interest.

The answer, stacked up neatly in a small base, turns out to be about twelve thousand gold lions.

You look towards Mina. "The robe, the glasses, the alchemist's tools, and the gloves are all strongly magical, the rings faintly so. It would take me a bit longer to tell what all of them do."

"Hypothetically, why would we choose not to loot and kill you when it's so profitable?" you ask, with the bluntness that only the enchantment allows.

"For the sake of a useful contact, one skilled in alchemy is rare in these lands as the spells of the Burnlands are in Sekamina. While most of my present contacts must be burned, I am certain I can make new ones which could then be leveraged more to your benefit than that which you can pick from my corpse."

What does Kori think?

[] Let the drow live

[] Kill him

OOC: The political information will be next update simply because that's a very complicated question, but this felt like a natural point to put the choice on the drow's fate.

@DragonParadox, you are too good at writing affable, sympathetic villains. I wouldn't lose any sleep over having to kill this dude, but I can see the value of letting him live. It really helps that he didn't try to make us force the issue.

Well, one arc ago the loot of an INT-based caster might have been to useful to give up on.

Now we have more money than we can reasonably put in equipment though.

Glad you liked him. I know the drow defector is a bit of a cliche thanks to Drizit, but even when I read those books what struck me how strange it was that he never once encountered other exiles with more self-interested motivations. There are other series that explore that side of things a little more like the Starlight and Shadows trilogy by Elaine Cunningham (the main character in that ends up redeemed, but by a much longer path, she starts out as pretty typically drow), but you never see the contrast in the same book. Honestly I think that would have helped a lot in grounding the character and getting him to examine how he saw his fellow drow rather than just having the good drow who worship Eilistraee and the bad drow who worship Lolth.

Okay, if we're going to let him live, we shouldn't be stingy. There is no point in creating needless ill-will here, after all.

If we let him keep his equipment and his gold, rather than simply not having an enemy we can instead cultivate a useful contact.

I know Kori isn't the only deciding factor here, but neither Cob or Gorok are likely to care and Sirim is pragmatic enough that he would support allowing Saenir to live. Mina isn't going to be happy about it, but she wouldn't be happy if we killed him either after he cooperated fully as agreed upon.

[X] Let the drow live
-[X] "A deal is a deal," Sirim concludes, if the rest of the party agrees. "We need not be enemies if you can let bygones be bygones, and we have no need of your equipment. Our associates, however, do not work for free. Rather than paying them ourselves, we will deduct their fees from your funds; 4,000 gold to Sir Pisca, 4,000 to Leontas and his men, and the remainder for you to keep. In exchange for leaving you with our share, I would ask that you make copies of your notes and recipes for Alchemical concoctions suitable for a common alchemist to produce, and perhaps provide some guidance on the matter to our friend."
--[X] "The governor has agreed to abide by our decision in regard to sparing you, but you will need to come to an arrangement with him, possibly enforced by binding magic, if you wish to retain your freedom in Taldor. Considering the situation in Cassomir now that Drow plotting has been exposed, you might be better off leaving the country entirely if the governor permits it."

I'd argue that Jarlaxle Baenre is the closest thing to what you are describing in the Drizzt-series.

He does kinda leave Drow-society behind, besides keeping some connections to his mercenary-gang (and why wouldn't he, it's a huge asset?).

It's not some much build on pragmatism as wanderlust for him though. There's more to life than endless backstabbing and Loth-worship, and he wants to experience it.

I like him. He's handling his situation as well as I could imagine anyone could.

I'm feeling a "we'll let you live, but only if you promise to never do evil stuff again (like incentivise the murder of innocents" [read: people that weren't going to be killed anyway].
Like pinky promise to not do evil stuff again.

And then we can release the governor from his promise to let us kill Saenir, and reccomend to the governor that a trusted agent or two is sent to write down every bit of social and political and military knowledge Saenir can provide (Saenir agrees to a Suggestion that he confirms weather any of what his has informed them is false or missing information) over the course of a number of weeks.

Hopefully, this unique, in-depth knowledge of the drows below will go some way of recompense for the harm he has caused to the people of Taldan. It'd have to, 'cuz there's not much else.
And then... let him do,

And apart from that, if Cob wants lessons, he has to gove up two weeks of time out of the next year for teaching.

Also, we want to know what your gear actually does. Call it a mage's curiosity [Is already marshalling arguments as to why [super cool item] is reasonably replaceable by someone of his incredible ability, and is worth selling]

But seriously, it would be really great if he could come up with a way that could make us trust that he'd stop doing evil shit. Are there oaths he can take infront of a god?

----
But for party cohesion, I do want to wait for Sirim and Cob to get back. Suggestion lasts for 1hr per level, so we have time.

That's true, but he takes so long to break ties that he doesn't make that good of a foil, he does not face the same challenges as Drizit or hint at other opportunities he could have taken in his exile had Drizit been less ethically inclined. The narrative does not treat him as a fellow exile, he just kind of stumbles out the door eventually.

I think we should split his gold three ways, Party/Leontas/Pisca and then give back our share to him as a seed fund. It's much easier to get money when you have money, espically as a crafter, and Leontas and espically Pisca want paid from this. (Not suggesting an equal share or what shares might be fair, just that the three groups should get a cut).

Pisca's been as helpful and uncomplaining as he possibly can be; and very usefully so. And he has done so for moments like this where the money is on the table.
To not give him a cut is to "cheat him out of what he fairly deserves", as I think he would see it.

Updated my plan to do that, and to ask for copies of his Alchemical recipes and notes, at least the stuff a regular alchemist can use.

For the sake of not having to make decisions without Sirim and Cob when we don't have to, would you mind having us just wait for them and their input? Our characters are defined by the choices (we have) them make, which is why I strongly prefer to keep everyone in the loop when possible.

Also, what if Cob wants alchemy lessons? We can totally get him some of those if he wants :p

I'll edit the plan accordingly.

As for lessons, that isn't really in the cards, IMO. I've already got a request for him to give Cob some guidance, but lessons means taking time we can't afford to waste. Cob mostly just needs recipes and somewhere to setup a lab, not outright instruction.

Saenir knows surprisingly little. His involvement with Taldan politics was providing aphrodisiacs to high-ranking nobility and planning to make a spectacle of the execution of his bodyguards. Somehow I expected him to play a bigger part. But then I also thought Elywa was from Zirnakaynin and a part of their mission rather than a separate faction entirely.

Still can't quite match the puzzle pieces. Cicatos is a Warhawk. Saenir supplies him with potions. WWC are Magpies. They trade slaves to the drow... but what do they get in return? House Basri threatened Ulenar not to look into who supplies purple-worm poison to the Teeth. Is this what they are getting? Skali sells low-quality leftovers and it made him rich; what does WWC's end of the deal look like?

And is House Basri with WWC, or are they acting independently? Their actions could be viewed from a prism of cooperating with the Lantern Bearers, their seeming participation in all kinds of drow affairs stemming from the knowledge of the subject and the wish to keep a secret hidden. The pirates would flee to the Locker because they knew the route, and we got Elywa's portrait because of their proximity to the hive, not because they were a part of it. The Basri warned off the Pathfinders because the latter got too curious for elven comfort -- not that it stopped anyone -- not because they had a share in the business.

The question is, why do House Basri align themselves with the elves to the extent they are sponsoring hits on dwarven vessels? They may be not the malicious plotters I imagined them to be, but they are still acting in the interests of a foreign power.

I hoped Saenir would hint at what is going on there, or maybe that the governor could use him to hold the elves in check, but it doesn't seem to be the case. My interest in his survival has waned, though at this point there are no incentives to kill him either. His equipnent is expensive, but we do not lack for money, and don't have an alchemist to make use of it. The only reason to kill him at this rate would be for fear of elves, and I refuse to act on those impulses.

Don't forget the Apsis Consortium. They're involved as well.

Beyond the Elves trying to hide the existence of their Drow cousins, I think all of the other factions are in it for wealth, power, or a combination of the two.

Cicato was benefiting personally from his association with Saenir, but was hoping to raise his standing among the royals by heroically vanquishing the murderous Drow when the princess was in town.

The WWC seems like the typical soulless corporation seeking profit over everything else. The Apsis Consortium mostly fall into this category, too, though they also seek power.

House Basri seems more in it for political gain than anything truly tangible. They're a diplomacy-focused house, IIRC, so playing the various local politics against one another gives them a chance to play mediator and peacemaker should more overt conflicts break out. If they can also act behind the scenes to earn favors from the various factions who think House Basri is on their side, that's just a pleasant bonus.

Kori is pretty sure the WWC is part of the Aspis Consortium. It's not like they sign themselves with a snake wherever they go. They buy up lesser corporations and make use of them for profit and advantage.

Edit: Cob'd by @Nevill :)

At this point I have to ask if the Apsis Consortium is even a separate entiry from the West Winds Company.

...are they?
Yeah, good catch.

Good thing we didn't roll into Cassomir with Gavhaul. We probably would have ended up involved in this mess from a whole different angle.

Guidance is good with me!

Personally I want to know what his gear is. Just out of curiosity. But it wouldn't go over well.

Also, I think this information gathering missions has gone very very well.

Do you have a shopping list?

I want some actual bags of holding, at least one big enough for a few people.
And air supply :p.

And portable alchemy gear.

"Information, what can you tell us of yourself, your house, the politics of Zirnakaynin...?" you ask, leaning close.

Saenir laughs. "How long do you have to listen? The answer to that question, out of date as it may be could fill several books."
Has he ever considered that making these books and selling them, even out of date as they are can be more profitable depending on the market? From Historians of Irori to Spymasters of Cheliax

The elves will ask for an autograph.
His best bet would be to pretend to be a surface dweller who explored deep into the Darklands and learned the secrets of the Drow. Losing a bit of academic legitimacy for not being a Drow himself could be worth not having so many enemies, other Drow among them.

Competent and polite evil guys are always weirdly fun to interact with, and so long as properly contracted should be alright to let live, especially since he won't be our problem.

Oh, @Goldfish we have the alchemy equipment from that dwarf pirate we killed earlier, could we give to him in exchange for a favor or for some work? We don't have a use for it after all, and the best we could do with it otherwise is sell it off.

Drow might like it.
