Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

@DragonParadox before we do another travel-timeskip, I'm hoping for the opportunity to raise the possiblity of Sirim having a few hours using Kori's body if we think it's... kinda safeish. Life is never going to perfectly safe, but one lvl 3 spell slot seems ok to spend on quiet days in my eyes and I hope for the opportunity to convince other voters of that. I kinda feel bad that we lost the goodwill of that Fey, since that would be a
When we're traveling, and under the threat of the Random Encounter table, I would prefer not to do this unless necessary. It won't be long before we can make it to a town or city where it would be more practical.

It would be best if we can wait until Kori levels up again. He could learn the Shadow Projection Revelation then, which would allow him to protect himself as an Incorporeal Shadow while leaving his body free for Sirim to pilot. This would be ideal for Kori and Sirim in a lot of situations, since Kori's Shadow will be a lot more dangerous than Sirim's.

It won't be long before we can make it to a town or city where it would be more practical.
I doubt that. Like. A lot.
It's not just a town or city, it's a town or city where we think we won't be attacked. Which is fewer than the total amount of towns and cities.
And before we get to one, we're dealing with the adamantine claim, and then we're probably wanna going sewing after those Alzanti refugees, or at least divine how their trip has been going, and probably deal with that. That's a lot of time.
Which is frustrating to consider and makes your assertion of 'won't be long' ring hollow in my heart.
----

Finally, the level 7 shadow thingy isn't a consideration in my eyes - though it is very cool and I'm excited to play with it, with Sirim using Kori's body.

It's 'one of Sirim's four level three spell slots' that I've been arguing to spend. That's always been what I've been arguing is worth expending.

If there's unexpected trouble (surprise round), Sirim can just duck Kori's face towards the ground, and while no one can see said face, just leave through his nostrils. Bam! Two spellcasters.

A Foe's Rest

Gavhaul proves quite poor in arcane accoutrements, only a simple traveler's cloak of the kind you had acquired recently, though there is a silver badge marked with a coiled serpent eternally devouring itself.

"More self-awareness than I'd have thought to seem from the Consortium," Sirim had proclaimed with a huff of thin black smoke. More worryingly though is the fact that the badge showed the telltale glassy-silver light of divination. True, it's polished to a mirror sheen, enough to scry in, but so too might it prove to be a focus. Mina suspects a two way connection. Given the deeds that took place this day and the sorts of 'friends' Gavhaul is likely to have had you'd rather see it buried in the woods than hang it around your neck.

True, you could ask what manner of enchantment it has, but there are more important things to ask about, potential dangers on the road ahead that still holds at least the shadow demons as well as whatever agents he had arranged to get the adamantine into Taldor. So with a grim faced Leontas beside you, though not Urgor, who had excused himself, you begin the interrogation in three parts:
"What did you plan for us?"

"Fulfil the contract," the answer is as a rasp of rusted hinges from dead lips.

"Did you have any dealings with the demons from the City of the Faceless?" Mina asks as her magic holds bids him answer.

"No, demons are unpredictable."

"Describe your deal with the giant." Maybe this will drag more answers from rotting lips, you think... and hope.

"Service until the day I release him, or he bests me in a trial of minds."

"What happens if you died first...?"

"Fourth question," Mina warns as the corpse slumps back on the ground, blood still oozing from the tears of axe and claw.

Mina Spellcraft (DC 20/25): 1d20+14 = 22 (Success)
Corpse Will Save (DC 17): 1d20+7 = 13 (Failure)

Cloak of Resistance +1
Silver Aspis Badge (Faint Divination Aura)

"Take with?" Cob motions with the bone knife knife under the Gavhaul's chin. "Ask more questions later?"

Mina freezes at the suggestion, then shakes her head hard. "No, no, we killed him, we can't... he might come back if we don't give him a proper burial."

Your smal friend opens his mouth to answer, maybe something along the lines of being able to kill him again if you have to, but the words don't come out. He might not know why Mina cares so much, but that doesn't prevent him from being sympathetic. So it is that Loric Gahvaul finds his hoped for final resting place a little ways away from Fusil under the boughs of an aspen tree just starting to bud green, with prayers for speedy passage through the River Styx and swift judgement from the Lady of Graves.

Mina Religion (DC ???): 1d20+13+1 (Guidance) = 31 (Success)

"Do we bury the... crystal as well?" Leontas asks after a moment. "That thing looked like a ghost to me."

"Hopefully he's free now," you offer, leaving the obvious unspoken: Otherwise we are are going to have to keep dealing with him since Gavhaul is too dead to either fight or release him.

What do you do with the potentially dangerous items?

Damn, I was expecting Gavhaul to have more in the way of personal equipment. Really makes me wonder about the staff and has stove thing. He might have a lot of wealth tied up in those. I'm completely fine with getting rid of the Apsis badge. It could be very valuable, but it's also a nuclear hot potato I don't want us holding. That said, it should be safe to carry in a lead box for a short while. Maybe the Pathfinders would be interested in it?

As for the Spirit Vessel, destruction or trading it away is also fine with me. Potential value aside, it's too far outside our wheelhouse, IMO. Sylestrix might be interested in it. Maybe even enough to trade for some Azlanti treasure.

[X] [Badge] Put it in a lead box and take it with you. Perhaps our Pathfinder contacts would be interested in an enchanted badge belonging to their rival organization. If not, we can simply destroy it.

Hmmm, little upset that Gavhaul wasn't more of an asshole and he planning to betray us after all this, since it really felt like he was.

I'm not surprised he wasn't, though it would have made things more palatable for us. After all, our party showed itself to be very capable, along with having a serious specialty in stealth and tracking. We would have been great assets for him to cultivate for later use. And just because he wasn't planning to betray us now doesn't mean he wouldn't have later. The Apsis Consortium's treatment of minions is well documented, and Gavhaul was fully onboard the Apsis train.

There were many ways to fuck us over that would have fulfilled the contract. That phrase might mean something completely different to him than to you.

Ah, classic. :D
Whenever players come up with some long-term plan requiring secrecy and constant lying to someone's face, they will make them jump at every shadow thinking their conspiracy is revealed, and force them to come down on their target extra hard.

While the poor target is completely unaware, and the excessive preparation (and dealing with the fallout when you orbital bomb your target into the ground to be sure) is what may actually land party into trouble.

For some reason I have this feeling Gavhaul has absolutely no idea.
Even in death we keep prodding him with a stick, expecting betrayal the most dire. Aaany time now.

Meanwhile, Gavhaul's only suspicion probably was that we were too competent for hires he usually had to deal with. That doesn't happen, not with his luck!

Don't get me wroing; had the discovery warranted it, he'd silence everyone forever in a heartbeat, but it didn't so far, and he had all the reasons to keep us around so that we'd continue warding off the sudden influx of ill fortune.

...lead boxes keep magic away now? What is it, radiation?

A Bargain Improbable

Truth be told you had been a touch weary at the notion of selling the dragon the vessel of he who wounded her so sorely. Would be take offense? Would she demand you destroy it without payment?

Dragons, you soon discover, are harder to read than those who walk on two legs.

Sylestrix relishes the chance to face her attacker again, enough so that she is willing to trade some of her 'hard' won treasure. After all, she reluctantly admits, she does not technically have to claim all of it. The core, certainly, she had been tasked with that by her elders, but the rest is a 'seed-hoard' according to Sirim, for she is a young dragon only a few years out in the world searching for lair, wealth, and purpose. Though no expert in the ways of dragons, you think you see in her one who beholds the world's endless possibilities, much as you have since coming out onto the world's burning skin, a sentiment you'll be keeping to yourself... for now at least. No sense tempting her pride anymore than it has already.

Sirim Diplomacy: 1d20+12 = 29
vs
Sylestrix Sense Motive: 1d20+17 =
22

Her value of the goods though is not what it would be in the markets of Augustana or Almas, weighted by aesthetics and a desire to hold in her care precious magics, but also a deep and abiding hatred of all things born of the Pit. If a pair of spectacles would allow you to more effectively hunt them down then Sylestrix is is more than glad to see them hunted, especially with the proof of the scaled-skin Gorok has flayed from the iron hard bones of the demon master. His horns too the hunter had taken and the tongue he had set to dry. No doubt any alchemists will be glad of such attentiveness so long as you do not fall afoul of the authorities for dealing in demon parts.

The badge too the five of you decide to take, at least as far as the nearest Pathfinder to ask them if it's more trouble than it's worth and if they'd like to buy it off of you.

Gain 1,000 gp worth of Demon Hide, Bones, and Horns

"Merchants of improvident things," Mina shakes her head ruefully, a touch of guilt in her eyes, but no more than that. All of you had come far these past months, but none perhaps as far as she from duergar chains to hardened mercenary.

What would you ask of the dragon in exchange for a relic you'd rather be rid of?

Since you've had some issues with Detect Evil in prior quests, I have to ask, how exactly does it work in this?

Do mundanely evil people have a weak Evil aura, or do only Clerics, Fiends and Undead show up on the radar?

Only sources of supernatural evil which means you would also catch an evil construct made with tortured souls or a wicked fey etc... but Jim the Dishonest Baker who cuts his flour with sawdust and kicks puppies on the weekends is safe.

@DragonParadox would she be willing to accept gemstones and/or that sorcerer robe as well? I really want a bit more than 360 worth tbh.
Also, does 'detect shapechanger' work on druids/shifters in their animal forms? (Assuming that they haven't taken specific precaustions against such magics, of course)

1 x Djezet-Skins: 180 Points Each
1x Saccadic Prism Spectacles: 100 Points = 280 total

Things I kinda want:
1 X Muleback Cords 25 Points Each
1x Spectacles of Constant Discern Shapechanger: 60 Points Each

So.

We don't need more than one Shining Wayfinder, since we only have one Good partymember who can use those anyway.
We don't really need the Djezet Skins, though they'd be nice to have, since they have less effect than a Mage Armor.
@Goldfish Small note, is it really worth having Sirim use two spellslots to prepare Mage Armor? Wouldn't it be more efficient to have Mina prepare 2 Mage Armors, for herself and him? It's not a Personal range spell.

  1. Maybe later, right now Sirim just managed to sell her on a very limited trade done quickly because the ghost might come out and wouldn't she like some payback
  2. Wild Shape is (Su) so yes. It would not catch a druid who used a spell to take another shape, but as long as they use Wild Shape they'd get seen same as a werewolf.

It should still catch that, by my reading?

The spell has two effects.

Firstly, it allows you to see the true form of anything shapeshifted, that should include wizards or druids using spells for that purpose.
Secondly it allows you to notice people with shapeshifting powers in general, even in their base form, but only if those are supernatural or Ex abilities.

So a Wizard still shows up in their real form while shapechanged, but doesn't glow in his base-form.
Meanwhile a Druid or Shifter will always be noticeable.

Well yeah, that's what I said. If a druid uses their wild shape to shapechange they will be caught, but if, like the wizard in the example, they change shape with a spell they won't be caught.

The Djezet skin could be seen as lowering Mina's AC by one (lets ignore the touch AC aspect ;)), but I think there's significant value in the +5 to diplo checks with people who already like you.
It'll also free up a spell slot for another preparation of Hermean Potential.
Edit: I'd also like to have it for Sirim when he eventually gets a body. (I also wonder what happened to the evil book Gavhaul said he was gonna copy. It's listed on the Good's and Provisions page, but I don't recall when Gavhaul gave it back).

-[x] Try and divine when the ghost will reform
----
Oh, I do hope that Sylestrix wants us on hand for if/when that ghost returns.
A, because I want an opportunity to ask questions if we have the very unlikely chance of them deciding to talk things out.
B, because the only thing scarier than a dragon is a hasted dragon.

And if she's pleased to have had backup, then I really really hope that she'll let Kori (with maximum buffs and rerolls) try to learn more about the mind core... maybe at the cost of telling her what we find out? That might be fair. Hopefully she thinks it would be.
As things stand I'm ambivalent to having the mind-core, but intensely interested in learning about it.

@DragonParadox can we use Divination to try and predict when the ghost will reform?
Also, can we use Divination to get hints about how to safely learn about the stove (bonus to our investigation/spellcraft/knowledge rolls), or would that be beyond the scope of that spell?

No, I think we are talking past each other:

By taking a standard action to concentrate, you can see the true form of creatures within 60 feet. Each round, you can examine one creature you can see to determine whether it is polymorphed, disguised, or transmuted, and what its true form is.

If you look at a shapechanger in its true form, you immediately sense its shapechanging ability, but you can't determine what other forms it might be capable of assuming.
I have seperated in the quote what I think are two different effects.

First, if you have a Wizard under Polymorph or Alter Self, you do notice him.

He doesn't show up as a shapechanger for the second effect, but he is still visible as being transmuted/polymorphed while in another shape.

  1. Sure you can ask, it is still entwined enough with Kori and company
  2. Only if this is information you would have gotten in the next week so probably not. Divination isn't an all purpose investigative tool, it looks at your personal world-line for a relatively brief time.
