Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

Arc 8 Interlude 9: Of the Road
Of the Road

6th of Neth 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

"All of us came her with hope for salvage from the stars, plain simple metal, beyond the craft of all but Torag's folk to forge mayhap, but needing little more than a scale to judge it's worth. Now..." The flying snake laughed and t'was a bitter thing, but to Urgor at least understandable. Gods of my Fathers this hasn't gone as I expected, he thought, half in prayer, half begging pardon of them who had passed into the Halls.

"We now know that the adamantine is hollow, and a significant portion of our promised pay is now tied up in getting a cut of the value of those artifacts, something that is trivially easy to lie about. You'd be stuck hoping Gavhaul values your future service enough to not scam you too badly."

"I..." the excuses died in his throat. Sure he didn't have the tools, but he could've gotten them before seeking patrons with grand promises. The thought that he was the sort of craftsdwarf to blame his tools or lack of made Urgor's throat burn with shame and bile. No wonder these fiends found it so easily to roost in his flesh.

"My mistress finds no fault with you, master Surefoot, nor any in her company," the soundless voice continued flatly, offering no sympathy and thus leaving no doubt that it was at least the truth as the serpent knew it. If someone had told Urgor that he would be hanging on what a shade-kin, a witch, a lizardman, and a goblin thought of his honor he wouldn't even have wasted the breath to call them mad.

"Fault is to be found with the one who will be doing the parting. We've seen how much of a damn he gives about those working for him. To him, we're all replaceable. So let us replace him."

"You offer a risky bargain... hypothetically speaking," the sellsword captain said, aloud presumably the better to be heard by Urgor himself.

"Little of worth in this world is free, Captain Leontas. One in your position likely knows this truth more fully than most. Aid us and we can split the proceeds far more favorably than whatever Gavhaul offered your company. Not only will you be able to pay your people what they are truly worth, you will have surplus coin so that you can be more discerning with future contracts. You may no longer be a member of the Crusades, but it must rankle a man such as yourself to work for the likes of Loric Gavhaul and the Apsis Consortium." A pause heavy with unspoken things, then spoken: "Do you think they would hesitate for a moment dealing with demons if they thought they would make out well for it? The take of the Vampire Breolia, if changed that to one of a demon that made a habit out of stealing the lives of young noble girls, would it have read any differently?"

"Devils aren't demons, I've talked with enough Hellknghts to have that beaten into my head," the sellsword said, though from the way he was was pickin' at the ends of his hair, grown shaggy round the shoulders on the journey, he didn't find that to be even as much comfort as a stone pillow.

"A wise distinction, here's another: Dragons are not merely lizards with wings. The reason the others did not return is that we made contact with the dragon. She has no interest in returning the items to mortal hands. Loric Gavhaul has no intention to leaving them with her. How many of us do you think he would be willing to feed to the dragon when each death makes it that much easier for him to redefine terms?"

In his heart Urgor knew that he should have been arguing against this, treachery of the most brutal sort done upon a man he'd contracted with, no matter his sort. But he said nothing because he remembered Jernashall, because he trusted the folks now planning treachery to see the restoration of his clan's honor. Was he mad or dreaming? Was he still in the thrall of some fiend? No, he was a dwarf of the road as his clan had been for nigh-on five hundred years. Wheels turned on roads, not rocks from the mountains. Come the day when his son's son's son would pray to Torag before his shrine and ask for forgiveness of what Urgor the Wanderer did to get him and his kin back under roof of stone.

Sirim Bluff vs Leontas Sense Motive: 21 vs 15
Sirim Diplomacy (DC 25/30): 1d20+13+5 (Strength of Argument) = 26, 37 Full Success

Sirim Gains 1,600 XP

"Does Gorok's Band have a buyer in mind for the metal, such as it is?" If the sellsword suffered under anything like the same sort of soul searching, Urgor couldn't see it.

"Yes," came the answer, somehow sharp like a dagger in the silence of their minds.

What forces do you wish to be in play for the battle with Gavhaul?

[] The Sellswords, skilled in dealing with demons and their puppets, used to working together

[] The Surefoot Swarfs, not warriors by trade they are hardy and armed and armored for the journey as well as driven by their dream of recovering their home

[] The Ohancanu, mighty oak-breakers, but ill-disciplined and easy to sway with word or enchantment

[X] The Dragon... she will not be denied her prey

OOC: The XP is for driving off the demons and various diplomatic coups he pulled.

releases a deeply held breath

whew!

Edit: I'd like to take the Ohancanu only for this - cast PfE on them first.

I want the Sellswords to just be ready for either demon attack, or for someone who's possessed to try something.
Also to tell Sylestrix that Urgor was possessed by a Shadow Demon, and ask her to lend some of the goggles for the battle - argument: while we are focused on Gavhaul, that would be an opportune for the demons to cause trouble/attack, especially if they're interested in the treasure she's protecting.

Good, good! *Palpatine*

But seriously, great job from Sirim, subverting and outsubverting the entire camp.

I would assume the demons have taken interest in the expedition, so we might want to keep Leontas in reserve... and I am not sure why we'd want dwarves to take part. I think the Ohancanu will be plenty, though we'll need to ward them againsst mind control and similar effects.

Good work, Sirim. You earned that XP.

For the fight with Gavhaul, I don't think the Dwarves should be involved. Some of them might be competent combatants, but that's not why they came along with the expedition and chances are they would get in the way or serve as a distraction. Numbers only go so far, and it would take just one powerful AoE to maim or kill a lot of them.

The Ohancanu are powerful, but they're also Large-sized and overall pretty monstrous. If we use them, using the mercs would be difficult, to say the least. There is only so much room on a battlefield, after all, and some of the mercs might not take too well to working with the Ohancanu. I would also prefer to keep them fresh for dealing with the Demons, if/when they show up. The mercs have experience fighting Demons, but the Ohancanu has the heft and power to more than make up the difference.

@DragonParadox, can we keep the Ohancanu in reserve, ready to commit to the fight if Demons interrupt?

Good to see we can get everyone on our side!

@DragonParadox could we attempt to cash in favor with local fey to help deal with Gavhaul too since we took out their rival?

Our little Lunar will be engaged with Gavhaul and whatever tricks he has.
So I'd prefer to keep the mercs and dwarves together in case something like "demon tries to possess/kill the important ones" happens.

I wanna make use of the Ohancanu while we have them.

Arc 8 Post 38: To Thundering Tread
To Thundering Tread

6th of Neth 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

When Sirim came back with the news that he had managed to sway not just Urgor but Leontas and his crusaders as well you let out a breath that felt like you'd been keeping it in since Augustana. Killing so many whose craft had been killing for so long would have been grim business and hard as pulling water from a sand seep, not to mention it being a waste of lives. The same sorts of folk as you really, willing to make silver off the Aspis. That you and your company had meant to make it over their corpses was almost incidental really, happening to meet a Pathfinder at the same time and saw the chance to claim the things now in the possession of your new allies. Odd how that works out.

"Hurt none of the small ones until I tell you to!" you shout back at the giants, gesturing dramatically as your cloak snaps in the downdraft of the dragon's wings. Hopefully it makes you look larger or more fey-like.

"We need some way to keep them from being enchanted," Mina says, holding up her staff for light. "Gavhaul is sure to have some tricks, and if there's demons..."

"I can keep a circle around me warded, but it would be unwise for me to get too close to the fighting," Sirim interjects. "I spoke to Sylestrix and all her spells are of the First Circle and for personal use. A wise allotment of powers if one is already a dragon, to be sure, but one that will help us little if the remaining vermlek decides to try to claim a host." He goes on to explain that the one he had expelled from Urgor would not regain the use of its power of possession until sunset tomorrow, so it would have to fight free floating.

What leaves one demon unaccounted for as you reach the edge of the camp. and of course Loric Gavhaul and whoever he had been speaking the tongue of Ghol-Gan with...

What, if any, buffs and potions do you use before approaching the camp?

It is oddly silent under the trees, even to unaccustomed ears. The presence of the dragon felt far and wide, the tremor of the giants' heavy-booted feet, but no horns sound ahead that might have warned the wizard to his peril. Leontas' guards had been warned to give no signal to your coming. The first sign that Gavhaul may have noticed that something is amiss is the nervous stamp and whining of horses... or so at least you think. Six skeletal shapes aglow with strange witch light rush soundlessly out of the trees to rush the giants' ankles, the same you had seen following you in Almas. Gavhaul's hounds are on the loose.

"Hey Ho, Doggy-O!" one shouts while raising his axe as the second one looks confused if he should even bother or just try to step over the rather small obstacle.

The guards too freeze in place, they know the creatures belong to Gavhaul, they had heard them in the night and they know they are betraying Gavhaul, but already? Before you'd even reaches his tent?

How do you deal with the strange hounds?

[] Have the giants smash them

[] Ask the guards to pitch in and keep them off you

[] Fight them yourself

OOC: Rather short, but we needed to get back in gear before the big fight and I do need to know who has what buffs.

Depending on how far we are from Gavhaul's tent, maybe Sirim drops a haste, we tell (one of? two of? all of?) the giants to deal with them and catch up to us, and have the guards keep alert for demons?

I'm fine with the giants perishing here, but not the guards, and these things feel like a delaying action.
If Gavhaul wasn't trying to buy time he'd keep them with him for the fight.

So, my first guesses unbinding that eldritch horror, or trying to tap it for power, or maybe some sort of one-use teleport magic that takes a round or two to activate?

You are at the edge of the camp, about 80 ft from the tent.

I've not got the time to look over buffs, but in that case I think that now is the time to cast haste - it take an action regardless and lasts 6 rounds, by which point we should be done, and I really want to get to the tent fast. (Though we can only pick 6 targets, so... dragon, and Cob and four others.
(Can Sirim catch a ride on a hasted person's shoulder?)

Do the giants have rocks for their rock throw ability? (Range 100ft)

This has been a long time coming. Looks like Gavhaul was at least prepared for our inevitable betrayal. Goes with the Apsis Consortium territory, I guess.

I'm almost certain Gavhaul is a Psion with the Shaper Discipline. It makes the most sense, given his reliance on Astral Constructs. He could have a different Discipline, but the feat investment to get this much functionality with his Constructs would be even more steep.

Regardless of his Discipline, Astral Constructs are not cheap to create if you want them to have any real combat power. Assuming Gavhaul is 7th or 8th level and can make 4th level Constructs, each of them would cost him 9 Power Points to create, or 54 PP for all six. Since an 8th level Psion with an INT of 20 is only going to have 78 PP, I doubt he would spend more than 2/3 of his reserves in this manner. It's more likely he spent only 1 or 3 PP for each of them, allowing them to still serve as a distraction without exhausting his reserves.

With that in mind, I'm in favor of asking the guards to deal with the Constructs. They should be more than capable of dealing with them while we focus on more important enemies.

[X] Pre-Battle Buffs
-[X] Mina casts Mage Armor and See Invisibility on herself, and Invisibility on Cob.
-[X] Sirim casts Mage Armor and Shield on himself, and Magic Circle Against Evil to protect himself and those nearby. He keeps himself hidden in Kori and Mina's shadows.
-[X] Kori uses his Cloak of Darkness revelation, casts Protection from Evil on the Ohancanu, Gorok, and Cob, then casts Bless on everyone.

[X] Ask the guards to pitch in and keep them off you

Haste is an awesome buff, but it's duration is too short to use yet, IMO. Also, I'm concerned that we're going to need it against the Demons more than Gavhaul.

Better to hold that on in reserve for an emergency instead of blowing it now.

You are assuming he's playing fair.

If there's an option to summon up pre-made guardians, by item or binding or something like that, Gavhaul probably used it.

It's an assumption, but a reasonable one. If the Constructs are more dangerous than I'm expecting, it won't be difficult to pivot and deal with them. We might lose time dealing with them, or we definitely lose time dealing with them. I would rather go with the maybe option first and hope for the best.

[X] Goldfish

I'd prefer to use the Fey, since I have less trouble loosing them than the guards, but I bow to the Fighting Fish's expert opinion.
