These two things probably go together. If you're in a knife fight with a clumsy peer opponent and this demented little gremlin keeps jabbing you with a needle that realistically can't inflict meaningful injury but hurts and distracts you, smashing the gremlin may well seem like a good idea. It might be that "rationally" you should ignore the pain of the gremlin's attacks and concentrate on getting that fucker with the combat knife, but DAMMIT, OW!

Either Misato is a moron with no tactical knowledge or she values office politics more than Shinji's life. Oh and preventing the apocalypse.

Or she genuinely thinks this mecha cannot do anything particularly significant against this monster, is worried that Shinji's going to idealistically get herself killed trying to protect a tiny squishy mini-mecha against a rampaging kaiju if they "fight together," and/or is dealing with Genjo's bullshit and doesn't think that this marginally helpful mini-mecha sidekick is worth the disruption that will happen if Genjo orders her pulled off this job and replaced with some flunky.

When a guy like Genjo runs an organization as a personal fiefdom, his toxicity and general bullshit will tend to contaminate the behavior of otherwise decent and competent people who are working for him.
 
I like @mayordomoGoliat 's idea about using a very rigid structure of questions that he definitely can answer to try and get a better sense for him. Our Shinji has decent Intrigue and is reasonably likely to start figuring things out about Genjo's overall attitude and worldview as long as she has something to work with. But she's likely to get more to work with from a loosely informative response to a question like "why is uncle so afraid of you" than from the probable non-answer we'd get to something like "why are you such an asshole?"

There's no way a vaguely typical Genjo is actually going to share relevant secrets about Eva stuff, since he's a big believer in "if I thought my coat knew my plans, I'd take it off and burn it" as a way of life. But he has to know that Shinji is actually going to need some answer to "what's with the giant monsters," and what he doesn't choose to tell Shinji is in some ways going to be more informative than what he does tell her.

I figure there's a near 100% chance that the answer to this question is something Genjo won't tell us, so whatever we hear is probably going to be either a plausible lie, a refusal to answer, or perhaps most likely, a "can you? I've never heard of anything like that," which is arguably a combination of the first two things.

Another thing we have to take into account is that Fuyutsuki will probably also probably be there... as far as I remember he's always been more affable.

So I understand we aren't actually asking questions yet just giving them to be selected later... I mean we probably won't ask these but having them on mind for later seems good anyways. Of course there might already be answers for this in canon but I think Shinji would still want to ask em here anyways.

These all seem like questions Shinji would have- even if they don't actually voice them ya know?

Also random thought, I don't know if it would be possible but the idea of Sachiel, if it realized the Shinji was the pilot, pulling a Kaworu somehow and interacting with Shinji and actually becoming friends makes me Chitter. It's a dumb idea but still.
 
Misato: Regardless of my personal opinions on allowing Shinji and Unit 01 to work with the TN-X-01 or its descendants, it is the official position of NERV that the Eva pilots are only supposed to work with NERV staff and other NERV pilots
 
Got it Misato doesn't agree but realise that she can be easily replaced by someone that will follow NERV position anyway and believe she can help more by keeping her post.
 
Can we accidentally on purpose step on Gendo and kill him when we next pilot?

Considering it's his wife he might even like it.

Yes, slightly changed the wording to make it a bit easier to parse.

The bottom set of questions are going to anger your father, so asking one of those will reduce the number of questions he is willing to answer.
