Only question that i have is why launch the R-2 instead of letting that go to a museum considering we apparently don't get much out of it anymore?
See Qm post:
As a note, you don't have to launch the Gale. You don't get meaningful flight data out of a single sounding rocket launch anymore. I will be offering a museum option in the future.

Personally I want to get vacuum nozzles and Multi stage designs real bad, I can't wait for interplanetary probes. Launching nuclear interstellar probes as an end game goal would be neat too. Don't think we'll make it that far, but who knows

Clearly, then, we must pursue the ultimate method of transporation: The Nuclear Powered Space Train!
The 'launch ramp' proposal we got is sort of like a train to space. Power that with a nuclear power plant and we're good to go!
And I like C_Z's idea of using Creative Sponsorships to show off nuclear power.

EDIT: I know sounding rockets don't give us launch experience anymore, but are they still useful for storm research? We still have that mobile launch system that never be realistically able to handle heavier rockets.

Well, I guess we don't have to...but I didn't have anything else for that die to do. So I threw it on there. I can take it off, if anyone else objects.

Yeah, don't launch the last R-2.

The thing about nuclear is that unless someone was going to take it up and really champion it, it would have languished and forced us into doing renewables or space solar.

Both of which are far more expensive and time consuming. For me, nuclear advocacy was about improving the most people's lives in the shortest time, with the smallest resource investment out of all the competiting options.

It felt wrong to exploit the nuclear stigma to push SPS when it was more expensive and longer to roll out, even tho it would have been good for us from a rocket launch standpoint.

Abundant nuclear energy is also good for us long term tho, because it opens up things like beamed energy propulsion, and cheap energy grows the economy, which grows the absolute amount of resources going to us.

Long term colonization of space basically requires nuclear power.
I mean, yeah. But that's like looking for the jet engine when you've just invented the horse and buggy.

If you want a decent meta reason, it's because of global warming.
I.. really do not get why this thread, about spaceflight wants to keep promoting nuclear power so hard.

ETA: I don't think it's bad, I just don't think it should be prioritized over basic spaceflight at this point.
I mean, real talk, this is SV. Of course they're going for nuclear power and then justifying it ex post. I'm somewhat surprised @Shadows even gave us the option.

Do we get any income from patents or technology developments?
Patents? You mean those things the capitalists use? But seriously, we're a publicly-funded research group, we won't make the people pay twice for our stainless steel recipe.

Yeah, our nuclear research work does feel tacked on to our space program. It seems the IEC is the only dedicated "high-tech research" department the World Communal Council has (With departments of transportation, energy, etc only working to apply existing technologies) so the job of making something useful out of the superweapons the Third Great War left behind is left to us because both in and out of universe there's no where else to put it. And Shadows was not heartless enough to force us to endure a world with a nuclear stigma we could do nothing about.

And that's not bad: Space programs are excellent drivers of fundamental research and it means we the playerbase can feel proud about making the world a better place. But it is an odd setup for the council to come up with from first principles in the forties.

I am thinking of an omake involving the development of Transistors. Can you provide more information on what type was developed?

IIRC, it was because we went scrounging around the demil lockers to try and grab any useful rocket stuff, and someone gave us a nuclear bomb, prompting the question of "can we use this"

We ended up giving the bomb back, which I think was a great mistake; we should have put it at the bottom of a borehole and used it to launch a manhole cover into space.
