Edit: as an aside, who else is actually expecting Gendo to have an easy time of changing pronouns?

Because I am… since I expect him to do so purely because it gives him a lever to manipulate Shinji.

On the other hand, if Gendo were capable of being flexible or gracious for the sake of manipulating other people more effectively, I'm pretty sure Evangelion would have played out rather differently. He may have able to do that when he was younger- almost certainly was, since he clearly managed to work his way up through SEELE's ranks and that would require some skill at office politics. But he's a very rigid, very crazed shell of a man now, underneath that facade of control and regularity.

At the same time, Gendo doesn't actually seem to give a shit about Shinji except as a vehicle to get Yui back, as I understand it. So the vehicle having been restyled may not bother him as much as it might bother some kinds of father, the sort who have a lot psychologically invested in "MY SON, MY LEGACY," that kind of thing.

This is Evangelion and up to interpretation. I personally don't think he didn't care about him. I've always felt out of anyone in NERV he was the most afraid person there. Especially of his own son. So afraid of fucking up as a single father he sent his son away and fucked up anyway. Then again, depending on how he thought his plan would play out maybe he saw any of his actions leading up to it as ultimately reversible.
 
I've always thought that Gendo did care about Shinji, but his way of showing that care was a 'stick to the plan' mentality regarding instrumentality, in the end seeking to reunite with Yui alongside Shinji. The ends justify the means, and the ends are so great that to Gendo the means just don't matter at all. I'll echo that I don't think Gendo would particularly care whatsoever what gender Shinji is, outside of 'get into the damn robot' Gendo doesn't seem to care much about what Shinji does or does not do.

Honestly, the only person in Eva's main cast who might make a fuss about Shinji's gender is Asuka, depending on how uncharitably you interpret her character.

But yeah, all up to interpretation. Especially if you add on rebuild stuff, which still gives me a goddamn headache regarding character motivations and what, precisely, everyone was trying to do.
 
Depends on the canon. Some incarnations of Gendo legitimately do care, some outright resent him.

How much of any affection he shows is legitimate versus how much is him trying to make us more pliable (or how much is both) is probably going to be up in the air for a while. Potentially for the entire quest.

I like that one manga that has an alive Yui and sees Gendo, seeming to see understand how he could be, goes in the opposite direction and is just overly loud about his feelings for his son.

Doesn't Japanese gender its first-person pronouns instead of the third-person?

If so, then yeah, seems likely. :V

Oh I noticed.

I wasn't sure if that was due to the picture just being particularly cool, or some other reason.

But it does add something to the pile of "something has happened, and it probably wasn't good".

Also does this mean we get 3 mask sachiel? Or have they run out of masks because they didn't plan for having to do this again and now they just look goofy instead of menacing.


…also as I was writing this I think I just put together a likely crossover from Red Sea plus Timeline Shenanigans and if Singular Point is involved, I'm not sure if I prefer it or the Angels.

They are, but technically so is humanity. A long long time ago the First Ancestral Race (the FAR) seeded the galaxy with life using terraforming and bio-mechanical tools in vessels which are called moons. They would send them off to planets to seed life with the pole of the planet being their destination. The White Moon landed in Antarctica, but due to some error the Black Moon didn't head where it was supposed to and crashed on Earth into what would eventually become Japan. The control rod for the being in the Black Moon was damaged so as a fail safe the control rod in the White Moon activated putting the being in the White Moon into stasis. History as we know it then unfolded. Come 2000/01 in canon NGE and the control rod was removed from the bio-mechanical terraforming being and that awakened it causing it to start changing the planet to better fit the creatures it would create. Thus, Second Impact.
